Administration and military officials tell McClatchy that 2011 won’t be the beginning of the end in Afghanistan:
The Obama administration has decided to begin publicly walking away from what it once touted as key deadlines in the war in Afghanistan in an effort to de-emphasize President Barack Obama’s pledge that he’d begin withdrawing U.S. forces in July 2011, administration and military officials have told McClatchy.
The new policy will be on display next week during a conference of NATO countries in Lisbon, Portugal, where the administration hopes to introduce a timeline that calls for the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces from Afghanistan by 2014, the year when Afghan President Hamid Karzai once said Afghan troops could provide their own security, three senior officials told McClatchy, along with others speaking anonymously as a matter of policy.
The Pentagon also has decided not to announce specific dates for handing security responsibility for several Afghan provinces to local officials and instead intends to work out a more vague definition of transition when it meets with its NATO allies.
What a year ago had been touted as an extensive December review of the strategy now also will be less expansive and will offer no major changes in strategy, the officials told McClatchy. So far, the U.S. Central Command, the military division that oversees Afghanistan operations, hasn’t submitted any kind of withdrawal order for forces for the July deadline, two of those officials told McClatchy.
The shift already has begun privately and came in part because U.S. officials realized that conditions in Afghanistan were unlikely to allow a speedy withdrawal.
“Conditions in Afghanistan?” More like “conditions in DC.” Having put Petraeus in charge of Afghanistan, the received beltway wisdom is that there’s no way Obama can pull out of Afghanistan and survive politically in 2012 if Petraeus wants to stay. If he’d kept McCrystal, the thinking goes, Obama might have been able to blame the quagmire on him, throw up his hands and say “enough.” But he can’t do that with Petraeus.
So now that the 2010 election is over, and the Democrats are not worried about suppressing the hippie vote, it was only a matter of time before they’d start reassuring the Pentagon their budget won’t be cut in some crazy austerity measure burnishing Obama’s “national security” credentials by slow-walking this stuff.

Chalk up another one. My family doesn’t understand why I am so negative about Obama (and the Dems in general).
Noticed this at the end of a recent piece by George Will titled “Congress can keep Obama in check.” Any chance some conservatives may be rethinking the expenditures of war?
“Finally, give a thought to a subject almost no one has wanted to talk about this autumn. The nation is in the 10th year of its longest war and in what has been for American forces the deadliest year of that war. Do not assume that all freshman Republicans will support the current strategy and objectives – whatever they are – in Afghanistan.”

Thanks Mz. Hamsher . . . this admin offers yet another ugly knot in the pit of our moral stomachs to deal with.
I sense the anti-war crowd winding up HARD over this for ’12, and likely appealing to the disgruntled masses in these hard economic times of no jobs, appealing HEARTILY to the masses.
While I don’t think Obama will run for ’12 anyways (Party will tell him to step down) I AM concerned Party will name a war hawk (HRC maybe?) & A General for the ticket . . .
What this country could do for we the people if we ended Iraq/AfPak and empire building.
Le Sigh.
My family and friends don’t understand the same thing about me, msmolly.
Ewww… there’s a shocker.
I think it may be easier to keep track of the couple/few campaign promises Obama has followed through on. Keeping track of all of Obama’s broken promises and lies is gonna require a new database technology breakthrough. Obama’s done shattered mySQL.
Anyone know anything about MongoDB, Cassandra, or Dynamo?
One thing you can say about Obama. He never fails to disappoint.
Compromise and consistency – Obama’s favorite words.
It was clear when Obama took three months to decide how to proceed in Afghanistan and then went with the generals’ advice, he is not the man to end the war or do anything requiring backbone. It is also far from certain the party will deny him the nomination in 2012 and if so who will get it and does it matter? The only topic worth discussion is how we can create a credible alternative to the Dems in 2012. I think it can be done, but we have to change our mindsets starting with MyFDL. We have to start seeing ourselves as a community, not a hierarchy. It won’t be easy.
Time to give up on DC and the next election battles and start devoting resources to a movement. Forget about 2012, let’s put our money into something that will still be around, and infintely more effective, in 2020.
Why are the Democrats not worried about suppressing the hippie vote? Seems to me they suppressed a whole lot more than just that. Oh, I see what you mean – they don’t have that worry for the next two years, since there’s only the Republicans to worry about, whether they will bring forward impeachment issues. Best to do their bidding.
I really can’t see how following after Petraeus will ensure Obama’s re-election, though. He would have to hope for another kookie Republican ticket, to give folk no other choice. And as this election showed, that is not a sure thing any longer. And what in heaven’s name is he going to run on?
As it presently becomes more and more clear, Mr. Obama is a Democrat in name only. He must govern as a Republican to survive, or so he thinks.
It does seem we need, above all, a primary challenge to him, and it cannot come soon enough.
It is not too late for 2012, but if we keep dithering, it will be too late period. It was clear in 2009 after the public option debacle that the Dems were not worth supporting, but no one seems to want to talk about alternatives other than a third party which is not an alternative at all. You’re a good example. What will be around and infinitely more effective in 2020? BTW what happened to 2016?
I do not understand this kind of thinking. Assuming the party disowns Obama and there is another nominee, say Joe Biden, Hillary or whoever, you are still left with the party, with so called progressives who sign on for a public option and disappear when push comes to shove. What will it take to persuade you the Dems don’t have it and never will?
It takes a long time to get a third party off the ground and viable. We just don’t have that kind of time, given the circumstances.
I agree. What do you have in mind?
Right now, emigration is looking better and better. I don’t see how I can survive if the chairs of the debt commission get their way. At a minimum, I need to live somewhere that health care is readily available.
But, I can’t do anything right away… I have some unfinished business that I have to take care of first.
It was pretty clear in 2008, when then Senator Obama voted for that odious FISA bill… what we would be up against. Hillary voted against it.
Wrong. Third parties just don’t “get” how to do it. As I write here, under the electoral system as it now exists, primarying Obama (or whomever) in the Democratic races from the Left is the best option, even in the process of building a third party.
Imagine a Green ran as a Dem against Obama in his own party’s primaries. The message would be clear and instant: here’s someone truly to the Left of the presdient (and his party) vying to push that party where it belongs.
What’s to be gained is (1) a gutted Democratic Party that can be re-started as the true Leftist party is supposed to be, and (or) (2) an Independent general election candidate who, by virtue of their primary challenge, is already widely recognized – and more important ON THE BALLOT – for the general election.
I disagree. For one thing you are talking about the Democratic party, that is registered Democrats, many of whom are the establishment you mean to replace. You also ignore disaffected independents and Republicans. Your brush isn’t broad enough.
As for your “gains” the restarted (sometime after 2012) Democratic party has to be restarted. As for your independent general election candidate, his (oe her) candidacy in all probability won’t be successful. He may draw enough away from the Democratic candidate to give the election to the Republican. Palin anyone?
I never bought into the idea that they had a timeline for withdrawl.
Have they even defined ‘victory’ in clear achievable terms?
This is consistent with the latest mainstream meme–that Obama has been too wild-eyed and radical. From Obama’s point of view, he’s pulling back, responding to the will of the people, etc.
Does no one else think it strange that these leaks came while Obama is out of the country and talking to other heads of state?
So much for eliminating a war to save money…
“Conditions in Afghanistan?” More like “conditions in DC.”
perfect. just so. If several thousand more afghan men women and children need to die so that President Barrak Obama,(Nobel Peace Prize recipient), can appease American and Isreali right wing millitarists and deny the FOX propaganda network part of a talking point, tis worth it. HELL! lets say we won and have a yellow ribbon parade for “the troops”.
you have to Love the Con Man named Obama
It fits into his plans perfectly,
(Obama was laughing when he said, I am going to leave Iraq and Afghan in 2011, the military wants to stay close to CHina and RUSSIA)
first destroy the democratic House by 2010
a below avg Dem President could have kept the GOP out of the game for years
Obama can claim success here!
Second welcome my fellow Reps back to power in 2010
What pissed OFF OBAMA is the fact the GOP did not take over the SENATE!
Obama wanted the GOP to be in total control.
Left and Right want to end this war.
But Zero wants to keep it going to improve his “credentials” and re-electability.
Another shallow “me first” occupant of the White House.
I recall a quote by President Obama in Woodwards book when the military was pressuring for a long-term, double-down policy in Afghanistan. Obama said something like “I can’t afford to lose the entire Democratic Party.”
I guess that’s moot now.
The military always does a “plan B” to its civilian leaders.
Plan A) Nuke ‘em
Plan B) Lays out what the military wants
Plan C) Complete surrender
I agree with you!
Me thinks Obama just loss the entire democratic party
at least Obama is consistent, he only attacks Dems
I don’t recall Obama attacking and GOP bases of support
“Having put Petraeus in charge of Afghanistan, the received beltway wisdom is that there’s no way Obama can pull out of Afghanistan and survive politically in 2012 if Petraeus wants to stay.”
And, if between now and 2012, we meet several military reversals — maybe even, god forbid, a disaster — it will NOT be Petraeus’s fault. It will be Obama’s — for some made-up reason.
The R’s — and military brass, including Petraeus – will not let Obama go into 2012 with what looks like a “victory” — or even the beginnings of a graceful exit.
They want him out.
“Bombs Away: Afghan Air War Peaks With 1,000 Strikes in October”
http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2010/11/bombs-away-afghan-air-war-peaks-with-1000-strikes-in-october/
Obama pledged during his campaign to “focus” more high explosives on the people of Afghanistan, and Firepups endorsed this position by voting for him in droves.
why the change of heart now?
Is anyone really surprised by this?
The 2011 date was clearly selected to fit into the 2012 campaign strategy. Now the date is being moved, indicating a change in the campaign strategy:
* Kiss off the anti-war vote as irrelevant
* Don’t run at all
* Run, knowing you will lose
* Rejoice in tens of millions of votes from Republicans on your war-mongeriness
I have to wonder, at this point, if there is any way to stop these wars short of defunding them. If the CiC gives the order to withdraw, would the military comply? Are they afraid to run the experiment, being uncertain of the outcome?
Well, it’s only 8 days since the mid-terms and obama is pursuing a “free” trade treaty with South Korea, over in India trying to rebuild trust with amerika’s ceos by tongue kissing them, telegraphing to the republicans that he is willing to “compromise” and allow the bush tax cuts to be extended in their entirety which includes the very rich, bad mouthing FDR on 60 minutes for not doing anything for the economy for 6 months (which is another lie by this lowlife: http://openleft.com/diary/20801/obama-and-oligarchy), telegraphing his eagerness to cut social security on the same program, and now he’s stepping back from the Afghan withdrawal dates …
Z
Let’s see now. Obama is walking away from the 2011 date for Afghanistan. His hand picked Catfood Commission is calling for cuts in Social Security and Medicare. When do the massive demonstrations begin outside the WH?
President Obama is a pussy. He did not stand up to the Republicans on the stimulus. He did not stand up to the health care industry. He did not stand up to the banks. He is not standing up to the generals. He’ll probably cave on the Bush tax cuts. Note to Obama – we can’t afford tax cuts for anybody – we’re broke!
Somewhat OT – I’ve noticed that we’re not seeing a lot of the stay-at-home and vote-for-third-party folks gloating about the lesson they taught the Dems last week.
Now back to your regularly scheduled program.
War’s good business so give your son (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lscRNsyEzs4)
If we don’t pull out of Afghanistan where are we going to get the troops to invade Iran?/s
True, but it’s not a moment too soon to push for ranked-choice voting at the local/state level, to give third parties a chance. Dumbasses here in CA just instituted melee primaries – top two advance to the general. A step backward, IMO.
I’m considering impeachment, with an added provision that states that no federal money shall be appropriated or spent on the pension or secret service protection for any federal officer removed from office through the process of impeachment.
That will get his attention! If such a measure passes the House, those two provisions will cause him to seriously consider resignation.
Even though I know it’s near impossible to primary Obama, it makes me sick to see this brand as a Democrat. He does not deserve another term. At some point your “friend” that is a murderer and a liar has to be cut loose because let’s face it-Obama is making us all look bad, and ultimately the blood winds up on our hands if we support him in any way going forward.
He is personally ruining the Democratic party before our eyes. And I am not going to stop saying it.
I am certainly glad the President has made the decision to do the “right” thing rather than to be a two term president because he will have completely lost the base and any chance of being re-eleced if he does this…and that includes me.
You aren’t wrong except for the votes from Republicans because he won’t get those either. He will be done politically.
Next time we get a request from his campaign for a
donation, why don’t we all send in a penny. That lets
them know we received their request, and what we think
of it. I saw my Dad do that when he get very bad service.
If anyone has been deserving of a primary challenge it’s the fraud now in the WH. To say it’s “impossible” to primary him is far from the case. It just takes one brave soul to enter the arena. He would immediately be a contender since Obama has turned his back on the Democratic base.
We need to be in Afghanistan like we need a hole in our head. Anyone who thinks staying in Afghanistan is the right thing to do should immediately volunteer their services over there. This is not about 911 any longer. This is not about terrorism any longer. This is about the military/industrial machine at work and Pentagon Chiefs out of control.
Seems like many are not understanding the the real issues at work with Afghanistan, India and Pakistan. So for you half brains out there lets try it the simple way first….
“How Obama’s visit to India could affect the war in Afghanistan. ” “http://washingtonbureau.typepad.com/nationalsecurity/”
If the Pak-Indian Cold War does not sink in then let me know….
Obama personifies the Democratic Party of today, politicians like him
are all they will ever offer you, so either pretend to like it or step off and vote your actual principles, instead of voting against your interests for the candidate from Goldman, Sachs.
but, it is a fallacy to claim Obama isn’t a Democrat – his governing policies epitomize the Party as it actually is, Legacy Party loyalist fantasies notwithstanding.
What’s the fun in this, where are all the people that were defending Obama? What fun is there in being right if no one is there to say “I told you so..” to?
One. Term. President.
Sounds like Obama’s embracing the notion.
Meanwhile, can we start looking for a candidate who will run against Obama? Americans who are unhappy with Obama and who won’t bother voting at all and/or can’t vote for a Republican need an alternative so that their vote is counted and their voice is heard clearly.
I’ll be happy if they just stfu from here on, kind of like what the Bush supporters started doing by 2006.
“But he can’t do that with Petraeus.”
The hell he can’t!
No one should stay at home. Everyone should vote. But now that the failure of the Blue Dog bullshit is clear to anyone with half a brain, it’s time to vote 3rd party in 2012.
Was there ever any doubt that Obama would walk away from it?
I mean, he let the Pentagon do and say practically anything they wanted to do, until it got so bad that he had to can McChrystal for publicly farting in his face, or else walk around with a “WIMP!” sign hanging around his neck.
And while we’re talking about his walking, I think he’s gonna walk on the promise to get all of our troops out of Iraq by the end of next year. And if I’m right about that, it will be one of the biggest Bushco plates that he inherited and basically sustained (with those 50,000 troops still there) as it comes crashing down.
It wasn’t the pissed off progressives who taught the dems a lesson last week, or at least, not that many of them: it was the moderate dems and the independents, so important to hiring him two years ago, who so clearly began the process of firing him.
“Even though I know it’s near impossible to primary Obama …”
I think this assumes that he’s not totally damaged goods by 2012. I expect him to be. So, IMHO, we better be ready with someone.
Uhhh…would that be the same Hillary who supported Bush’s bloody, useless, bullshit-based invasion of Iraq for more than 5 years, until she saw it helping to ruin her chances at the democratic nomination, and finally ate her vote…sorta/kinda?
“Why are the democrats not worried about suppressing the hippie vote…?
Good question!
One possible answer: If they don’t suppress us, we’re going to make it harder for them to protect the corporate status quo.
My 2c, let’s apply every ounce of payback we can, and see how they like looking at being a political rump steak.
To put it another way, I don’t understand democrats who STILL want to reward Barack Obama for leading us into the ass-kicking that we got last week. If this were England, and he were the PM, he could well have been forced to resign 48 hours after the debacle.
Here, we get unending slathers of bullshit about how the big, bad, republicans stole the poor man’s mojo and crippled he and the hard-working democratic party, two years after we hammered the GOP.
Juliania: after what happened last week, if Barack Obama thinks “governing as a republican” is the path to presidential salvation, and how to avoid becoming the poster boy for a failed preznint, then he’s the dumbest fucking man on the planet.
(Apologies to General Franks…)
Larue: “Thanks, Mz. Hamsher…”
I mean, really.
One of the few bloggers…maybe, the ONLY blogger, who’s looking at reality squarely in the eye, instead of turning herself inside out, trying to cover Obama’s ass for engineering this debacle.
Jane gets the Norman Mailer award for “No more bullshit!” :o)
The White House is full of ghastly so and sos. A pox on them all. Out, out you demons of cupidity.
what about advertising on AM or maybe an AM radio show? Let people know where to read the articles posted here. I know I would have never heard about this blog if KPFK was not interviewing John Dean on Sunday Mornings show LIVE from the WESTCOAST.
All of you who haven’t read ‘The Mendacity of Hope’ by Roger Hodge, I urge you to make a beeline to the bookstore. Or library.
“I think this assumes that he’s not totally damaged goods by 2012.”
Bingo, Buzz. It assumes that, and it’s wrong.
I tells ya, we may not have the chance to primary him. If he runs again his coattails are going to be a political ebola virus, and very few democrats will want to catch it.
No political capital equals no second term. I think he’ll announce that he’s passing on the chance, sometime in mid-2012.
At that point, I think it will be one of the few good things he’s done for the party in his four years.
Oh my comment about this post, The USSR was dumb and guess who’s dumber? AKA movie title. Of course no body died in the movie.
And Burying IT ( in addition to more US dupes and middle-Easterners) in the Contemporary CATaclysmic CATFOOD-FIGHT!
Well, well, well… they couldn’t hold it in any longer, poor dears. It’s hard to tell them you were lying all the time. Most of use were never convinced anyway. And will any in the traditional media or the bozos at Daily Kos be surprised, raise even a question. (Actually, just saw that Kos gave it a line on front page.)
From their standpoint, the public will swallow damn near anything. And I hope to god they are WRONG.
Thanks, Jane, for highlighting this.
One last comment, people update your profiles! and don’t hide behind cryptograms (SF Giants championship banner} Some fans team lost!
“And I am not going to stop saying it.”
Good for you, Gal. You shouldn’t. :o)
“…governing as a republican…”
Sorry my friend. He is a Republican governing as a Republican.
The only dumb-sons-of-bitches who haven’t figured this out are the main stream Democrats. And we think the Tea Baggers are stupid.
Since war and debt are our only two true exports, if Obama gave up war we would lose 50% of our exports. He might be a turncoat but he is not crazy.
Oh my God Jane say it aint so! Your not telling me that Obama has flipped on this one are you? I knew he was lying when he spit that shit out. He does not have the courage or character to bring our troops home.
Actually I thought a primary impossible. If I had to bet, I bet on the no primary, but I forgot McCarthy beating Lyndon Johnson in New Hampshire enough to persuade Bobby Kennedy to run. He would have beaten Johnson had he not been killed. Maybe someone could pull off the same trick. Alan Grayson anyone?
Couple of corrections:
McCarthy did not “beat” Johnson in the NH primary – though he did pull enough votes that Johnson decided to withdraw as a candidate.
And it was not until after Johnson had withdrawn that RFK started his run where the assumption is he would have defeated Hubert Humphrey for the Dem nomination.
I guess I must really be crazy then because I see those two and want to lose 100% of our exports.
I’ll go self medicate now.
A materials engineer told me he thought about entering the armed forces as there were no jobs and he was desperate to find work to support his family. I explained to him that modern warfare is not a “work style” he can expect to not render him mentally ill let alone survive so what was the point of even considering it? For the desperate and the ignorant, it would appear that these economic conditions are like a “cattle shoot” directing the misinformed and unsuspecting into the war machine.
Consider the possibility that the U.S. cannot be fixed. Canada has been pretty great these past few years…
What did your vote for the Democrats accomplish?
I stand corrected. So much for my memory. What do you think the chances of a successful primary against Obama?
bunch of damn liars “governing”!
The missing piece of the puzzle of why a “genius wonderkind (punk) creation, from hell. Not much liked in the land by the way… Nobody loves it.
Nobody wants it… and Nobody will take credit for it: when the time comes.
CHARACTER. that is what is missing in spades, and it doesn’t seem to show much there in the capitol.
So join the Dump Obama movement! Are people waiting for him to kill their dog?
Petraeus plays who’s-your-daddy with Obama. 2011 was never part of the Petraeus plan. The crazy thing is that anyone fell for this date and entertained any idea that Obama might stand up to the military, especially with the State of the Union Address announcing this date delivered at West Point. What a give-away about the dynamics of power, the primacy of the MIC and the state of perpetual war.
Oh, I forgot to add this link:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/graphic/2010/09/26/GR2010092604071.html?hpid=topnews
I started at 6:00 PM. It’s true insanity.
We have lost our auto maufacturing to Japan and Korea. We have lost our consumer manufacturing to China. We are in the process of losing our intellectual and engineering development to India.
What’s left in the good old USA? I know, we will train all of our bright capable students who can’t afford college to work in the fast food industry or join the military.
We are really leaving our children a legacy of absolutely nothing. They will curse us roundly for our cowardice in the face of facism. Enjoy your medication.
Victory is never having to say withdrawal.
The extended date for withdrawal will likely be used to rationalize not making budget cuts in the DoD.
1) Obama will not run, because the Dim Party will tell him not to run. Their ticket will be a war hawk with political experience (HRC) & A General.
2) WE, us humans, we have NO input whatsoever in creating, urging, or shaping or influencing any notions of a primary. The CANDIDATE (and their rich backers) will have to take the stand, make the announcement, file the candidacy. At THAT point the Dim Party goes all out to destroy that candidate.
So this fairytale like pony with a horn on its head notion that WE can primary anyone is just plain false, not to mention silly.
People better get ready to deal with corporte supporting warmongering HRC and The General, cuz that’s threat worse n Palin (as Palin is no threat the GOP will never let her near the ticket ever again).
Yup.
I think they should just declare victory, hand out metals and come home.
I’d even be willing to participate in a victory parade if they did that.
The war in Afghanistan has already been won. And as it continues, every passing day is but another chapter in the epic saga of perpetual American victory.
Short-term, the war is a way to exercise social control over the troublesome domestic general population while simultaneously robbing it blind in order to enrich Wall St investors and subsidize hi-tech industry (including drone technology, future weapons systems, and domestic surveillance programs).
The war launders public US tax dollars through the Pentagon procurement system and deposits those dollars into the offshore bank accounts of the corporate criminal class.
Long-term? The multi-national corporate crime syndicates have paid their ideological lackeys in Congress and the White House to order the Department of “Defense” to secure a foothold in Central Asia in order to keep tabs on China, put pressure on Russia, control valuable resources near the Caspian Sea, and provide muscle for American corporate interests who believe Asia is the “gold mine” of future markets.
“Victory” in Afghanistan means harvesting hundreds of billions in profits for weapons manufacturers, Big Oil, and private companies with US military contracts; all that is needed to achieve this victory is the sacrifice of a few thousand disposable American lives, a few tens or hundreds of thousands of insignificant Afghani lives, and as many irrelevant lives of others who happen to get in the way.
This war has less than nothing to do with fighting Al-Qaeda, spreading democracy, or the safety and security of the American people. It is armed robbery and a mass murder operation. It is an illegal, immoral, despicable atrocity of astonishing magnitude.
The US oligarchy has already “won.” They have achieved “victory” every single day for almost a decade. And there is no end in sight.
Oshkosh (WI) Truck continues to produce armored transport and now a regional shipyard will be hiring 1000 plus new workers for a near done deal 10 vessel contract with the Navy at $435M each. With a deliberate bailout of the banks and all the other (intentionally) flawed economic policy keeping poverty and uncertainty high, the resulting future cannon fodder and cheap labor will also assist with the MIC takeover of this country for the MOTU.
I voted for third party candidates, every one of them I could, and I’ll do it again and again.
“Even though I know it’s near impossible to primary Obama..”
Please don’t think that way. It defeats you before you even begin.
More war, more tax cuts for the rich, cuts to social security and medicare, more violations of human rights and stripping us of our civil liberties.
So what exactly is it again that differentiates Obama from George W. Bush? Oh yeah, Obama is a better liar. That’s it.
