It’s been almost four months since Katie was diagnosed with primary lung cancer, and she is doing GREAT. The average life span for dogs after her diagnosis is 3-6 months, and Katie is not only symptom-free, she’s doing better than she has for years.
She’s had four rounds of chemo now and has handled them all without missing a beat, thanks in large part to acupuncture. It has also managed to restore the use of her back legs, cure her neuropathy and get her off of all the medications she was taking. I don’t understand how or why it works but the effect has been remarkable. At 13 1/2 she’s running around like a puppy, chasing the ball and keeping everyone in the house in line, especially that wiley Kevin Gosztola, who is occupying our guest room while he’s covering the Manning trial:

Katie, Kevin Gosztola, Lucy and the Dan Choi-Built Brick Barbecue
We make many home cooked meals, take leisurely walks, watch trash TV and just spend a lot of quality time together. Dan Choi came to visit us a few weeks ago and in a burst of inspiration built a fire pit out of spare bricks in the back yard. Since I’m pretty sure “fire pit” is something the DC fire marshal would frown upon, we converted it into a regulatory-friendly barbecue and it has inspired us to do a lot of gardening and spruce up the back yard. Katie has been diligent in applying good feng shui gardening principles to its design, and has done a splendid job of making it a peaceful and welcoming place for all of us to hang out.
Among all her other responsibilities, Katie also reminded me that Wendy Davis had written a lovely post recently inquiring about her health, and that I had promised Wendy I would post some photos. I thought a few ball-chasing action stills would be great, but Lucy was being a ball hog and Katie said the heat and her slightly wilted ‘do made it all a bit unlikely. So she opted for her world-famous hydrangea impression (above). It’s so nuanced and life-like I bet you can’t spot Katie among the hydrangeas.
Many thanks to everyone at FDL who has made it possible for us to spend this time together, especially Scarecrow, Ellie, Brian, Bev, Kit, Zach and Dakine (just to name a few). We love you all and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for this precious gift of time together. Nothing could possibly be more meaningful.
And just for the heck of it, here’s a picture of Scarecrow in Boston 2 weeks ago with my sister when she was graduating with her masters’ in computer science from Boston University (so proud of her):
My sister thought Scarecrow was pretty special. He is.

Katie is taking questions now, if anyone has any inquiries.
No questions, Katie, just: Hoorays! Booyahs! Far-fucking Outs!
(Ya can save some fer yer person, too.)
(Thanks, Jane Hamsher. Lovely photo of Hydrangea-gurl.)
Oh, and rec’d. o;)
Yay Katie! You two are so lucky to have each other. Rec’d
Hooray! It’s so wonderful to see Katie looking so … flowery! and to hear how well she’s doing. I’m sure all the loving care she’s been getting from Jane is the real magic.
So cool to see Scarecrow looking good – and to see your sister who is as gorgeous as you. How neat!
A question for Katie – could she identify the extra delicious sausages she dined on last I was there last? I want more!

Acupuncture works like meditation, to stimulate our energy channels and fill us with Shakti or Life energy. Meditation starts from within, while Acupuncture starts from outside and works inward.
There are reams of data, which suggest Acupuncture, Homeopathy, Ayurveda = “placebo effect” but properly applied, I can vouch they are all really effective.
Thanks Wendy. Katie says she loved your diary and wishes she could get me off the stick faster about these things.
She’s very photogenic.
I’ll add that during chemo, Acupuncture & Yoga/Meditation help to curb the negative effects of the drugs, which again shows they are actual remedies, not placebos,
Katie says those are Jon Walker’s sausages. We thought he was in South Carolina but turns out he’s in Belgium at the moment. I guess I should pay closer attention to these things.
We will ask him when he gets back. They were quite good.
Two other things, Katie.
I was starting a batch of probiotic yogurt (ya can stretch a bottle of freeze dried stuff indefinitely that way, and I wondered if doggie probiotics might be good for you. Turns out there are such things, so consider them, okay?
The other thing is that upon reflection, I think you must have a really strong spirit. That morning that you would not quit scratchin’ on the screen door of my heart/soul/mind…was odd, given neither you nor Jane Hamsher are that personally connected to me. So I did reckon that you might be in the midst of some crisis or other. Seems not to have been so, but all the lovely words and cultural celestial dog legends and honors…still stand for you and Jane into the future.
Love to you,
wd
This is wonderful news, what a blessing. It is so cool to see the pictures and put names with faces. The hydrangea impression is brilliant. Congrats to Pam, Scarecrow looks great, Kevin: totally awesome.
Is Lucy aware of Katie’s treatments, or rather, of her initial grave diagnosis, and has she also offered comfort to Katie? Which one is the older and how are they related?
Has the treatment affected Katie’s ‘hair?’
So beautiful, thank you for sharing this.
So good to see how well Katie is doing!
It’s really remarkable, the effect accupuncture has had on Katie. I never would’ve imagined. It’s much more dramatic than it is on people, or so I’ve been told.
My friend Lori came back from Dallas to find that her dog couldn’t walk any more. She took the dog to many vets and was ready to put it down but someone suggested accupuncture and the dog stood up and walked.
If it’s placebo effect, someone needs to tell Katie that it’s supposed to do something for her. She just finds it irritating but each time she goes, she runs out of there like a puppy. The results are immediate and like nothing else.
So good to hear, and see. All love to you and the classy canines. ;-)
Each time Katie has chemo I schedule acupuncture shortly afterwards. She may feel a little tired 2-3 days later, but her appetite is great and she’s very active. Much more so than before she was diagnosed, when she was taking medication for her back and leg pain.
She was on pretty heavy doses of numerous drugs just so she could get up and down stairs. She’s off all of them completely now, and has no mobility problems any more.
It’s just amazing, really.
Lotsa love back!
When we saw Scarecrow two weeks ago he said that we had all just “loved” Katie into wellness.
I believe that is 100% true. Thanks so much to everyone for helping with that cosmic lift. She really is just thriving, and each day is a gift.
If the Acupuncturist also knows Reiki, she/he can surround Katie with calming energy before starting. That way, Katie’s nervousness at the start will disappear …
Kids and Pets have less mental garbage, so yoga/meditation[yes, pets do meditate], acupuncture, etc. all work quicker than on adults, who are mind -centered.
I can’t tell you how much easier it is to teach meditation to an 8-year old, than a 50-year old PhD …
Thanks, Toby! She’s a tough old broad, that’s for sure.
Don’t know where she gets it.
;)
… to add …
When an adult meditates regularly, and also during the acupuncture, the effects are magnified.
I can vouch for Acupuncture because I have meditated while getting a treatment and when he would insert a Needle, I would tell him which energy channel and Organ[s] are being effected … and his Chart showed exactly the same.
I had to look it up, but here’s what this all brought in mind to me:
“…So I saw gathered there the noble school
Of the master singer of sublimest verse,
Who soars above all others like the eagle…
“…We walked together toward the shining light,
Discussing things that here are best kept silent,
As there they were most fitting for discussion…
“…There people were whose eyes were calm and grave,
Whose bearing told of great authority;
Seldom they spoke and always quietly…
“…And right before us on the lustrous green
The mighty shades were pointed out to me
(My heart felt glory when I looked at them)…”
[Dante; The Divine Comedy, Mark Musa translator]
Yes ! Love is the highest power, and the one thing which we receive more than we give …
Glad Katie is doing well. Looks like she’s got Kevin trained to behave himself.
:)
Oh, Jane, I was thinking about you and Katie yesterday, and I am so glad to see this lovely post today! You are all correct that Katie and hydrangeas are star material! Katie is shining there.
So glad to have the photos of the good life and the life of doing good in one place.
No questions, though I am sure Katie will not dodge them as the President has done today.
((((Jane, Katie, Lucy, and even Kevin!))))
Yeah, ahm, I’m pretty sure of where she gets it, and good for her. Wishing her, and you, all the best. You both deserve nothing but the best.
hey, I thought the Bark Salon happened on the weekends around here… :!)
Is Katy the mother or the puppy of Lucy?
This is wonderful, Jane. Thank you for sharing. All of us here (if I may be so bold as to speak for this great group) have been genuinely concerned and sending positive thoughts and healing vibes. I’m so glad Katie is doing so well and that you two are having this time together.
It is so wonderful to see Katie doing all the things she loves. Thanks for the updates. You and she are proving it’s love and how we live it that counts….. and lasts longer too.
She sure looks Pretty in Blue!
White Dog and Pupzilla send greetings to Katie from our end and they’re both quite impressed with the hydrangea impression. The only horticultural impression they can muster is a kinda quiet, furry ‘carpet ivy’ ground cover that spreads itself in front of the house fans.
(((Jane, Katie, Lucy)))
No questions but Katie sure looks good and it sounds as if she is doing well. Thanks for the update, Jane. I think it’s safe to say we all love Katie, Lucy and you.
Bwahahaha. Great hydrangea impersonation. A regular chameleon.
Thank you for sharing this, Jane. It’s great to get such good news.
I second the Reiki suggestion. I had a wire dachshund that loved his acupuncture treatments – they got his several more years of great life. My first experience with Reiki came just last week. I have a wire dachshund with 9 puppies who has had an emergency spay when they were 2 weeks old. She has had a tough time rebounding. Last week my vet did an acupuncture treatment coupled with Reiki and followed by chiropractic. By the time we got home she was eager to eat for the first time in two weeks. It was like magic. For sure there is no placebo effect. If it works on an animal – it is for real.
Blessings to Katie and to you too Jane. You are both fortunate.
Best wishes to Katie!
Yea Katie, I’m delighted to make your acquaintance. Hooray for your magnificent recovery. Can you share with me how it was that you’ve overcome your neuropathy. As one of the 20 million Americans dealing with this disease state, I rejoice for your recovery from that. I’m well aware that many folks develop neuropathy from cancer treatments, so perhaps you have some valuable lessons for the those who are so frustrated with their PN – peripheral neuropathy.
Thanks Jane for sharing this wonderful story with us. Thanks for you hospitality for the FDL family on mission. Thanks for the picture of Scarecrow. The Hamsher sisters are absolutely right, Scarecrow really is very special. And Congrats for your sister!
Blessings
Hooray for Katie! Have thought of you and Katie many times and was worried when we didn’t hear from you, Jane. So glad to know that you both are doing well.
Best wishes to all of you, and hoping that Katie makes a complete and speedy recovery.
stewartm, who is taken in a old cat which is FIV-positive and nursing it.
Glad to hear things are well with you and yours, Hamsher. Best fishes.
Good news indeed. And handsome girls you have there.
Hurrah for the Hamshers! Blood, adopted and blogger family all!!!
Someone asked me the other day what I did to keep a positive attitude.
I didnt answer them… but I realized later that there was something that I instinctivly do to get my head right…
I tease my dog mercilessly… until at some point I become overwhelmed by his beautiful innocence… and then I grab him… pet him… hug him… and love him.
It clears my head every time.
So where is Katie in this picture?
Jane–
I am so happy for you and Katie, and wish you both “Godspeed.”
It is amazing how much veterinary medicine has advanced in the last decade or so. We were blessed to keep our Springer, Chena, very comfortable until she was 17-1/2 years old (in spite of progressive kidney failure).
One reason I came to the FDL community was that I knew it was “dog friendly” after reading one of your diaries, a number of years ago. My oldest furbaby, Murphee, is my FDL avatar.
Please keep the updates coming. They are a bright spot in (politically) rather dreary times!

I would say the hydrangeas are doing a Katie impression.
Great news. Best wishes.
Such great news Jane and Katie. I’ve been wondering how things were going for Katie.
As for acupuncture, I too have no clue how it works, just that it does. I’ve been treating my dog’s seizures with acupuncture and Chinese herbs. Not only does the acupuncture keep her from having seizures, those she does have are so subtle as to be almost a non-event. And the best part is, she only needs the treatment about once a year.
Pretty safe to say that every time I see a hydrangea from now on, I will think of Katie.
Great to see an update from you, especially when it carries such good news.
I’m not around as much as I used to be, so apologies in advance if it’s been covered recently, but how’s Cristy?
I am so glad that Katie is doing so much better. This is wonderful news
Hey! I just happened to see the most beautiful hydrangea in the world!
You are looking lovely, Katie girl. Hugs to you and Jane.
So glad that Katie is doing well, and you are, too.
My mom had a huge hydrangea in front of our house. After she died I kept it when I remodeled the place.
Jane, I’m delighted to see Katie looking so well. Please give her a scratch behind the ears from me : )
Such wonderful news about Katie!! And I love the picture.
I had wanted to tell you about a product I started using for my 10 1/2 year old shiloh who was showing cognitive decline, ProNeurozone. The results are excellent. I don’t know if Katie is showing any cognitive decline at 13 but if she is, you should look into this. Main ingredients: Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Alpha-Lipoic Acid (dog formula), Bioflavanol, N-acetyl-Cysteine, Vitamin E, Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, Soy Lecithin (source of phosphatidylserine), Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Cranberry, Bilberry, Sage, Rosemary, Spirulina
Good on you for doing doggie acupuncture. I’ve seen it work wonders.
Very happy to see all is well in your inner circle, Jane. Love the pictures, too. The best to u and the girls.
Wow. That is very impressive. My left brain can’t believe that it could work, but my right brain (after a year and a half of yoga practice/instruction) is ready to accept that it does. So glad it works so well for Katie.
And yes, she is lovely as a hydrangea. ; )
So good to see the pictures of all of you…and bonus of Scarecrow (who I pictured more like, oh, Ray Bolger, I guess).
Lots of positive vibes headed your way. Thanks for creating this forum, Jane. It’s a staple for me.
I forgot to compliment the hound dog between the two poodles in the backyard shot above, he’s doing great work.
Dearest Jane,
Katy’s condition is so far and beyond the optimal we were praying for !!! Couldn’t be happier for ((((your family))).
Mad progressive love to you dear sister
Jane–
P.S. Here’s a quote that I’m sure that you and Katie can appreciate (especially with all that you’ve recently been through):
“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.”

Jane
I am sure Katie appreciates the love and care you are giving her! I still have dreams about my dog that we had to put down nearly 25 years ago
Ah, Jane. Thank you so much for the update and the photos.
I had the same exact fire pit/barbeque in my front yard in North Hollywood.
And, Brindle sends more slobbery kisses. (He’s in love all over again.)
just yay to this post, this thread, and jane, and katie
Awww…Katie is just beautiful and does not look her age! You and Kevin, Bev and everyone are one beautiful and loving family!
Woof woof woof woof arf arf!
Hooray!
wow! so forking cool – thanks jane for the katie update and pictures – such good news!!!
So glad to see Katie (and Lucy, too) doing so well. I never realized how much acupuncture could positively affect a patient, so I learned something! Jane, you just take care of your family. Until you’re ready, the rest of the world can wait.
I like seeing my peeps happy, healthy and in good spirits! Thank you for catching us up on Katie’s progress, Jane. Sounds like we all should seriously consider her new health regime. ;-)
Great to hear about the progress, Jane. I have been quietly following and wishing Katie well. As a pet lover myself, I know first-hand how traumatic it can be when they suffer from illness.
Wishing you and Katie all the love!
Most excellent. And a great bbq/firepit to boot. I’m so glad to hear about “good times together”.
So glad to know you’re all doing well. Katie’s good report is encouraging.
