Paul Ryan no doubt got the nod because Chris Christie, Bob McDonnell and Marco Rubio were all afraid to risk their political futures as failed VP candidates on a Romney ticket. Paul Ryan doesn’t have a lot to lose….he’s got a fairly close R+2 PVI district where he’s been in trouble ever since he took on senior citizens with his his wacky Medicare coupon plan, and if everyone is betting on a big Democratic turnout in the fall, this makes sense for him.
Tim Pawlenty…well, he probably did get rejected.
Lest anyone worry that sports shouldn’t take sides in politics, McKayla is likewise unimpressed with Eric Holder shutting down medical marijuana clinics to distract from the Fast and Furious debacle. So petty.
Olympic athletes and weed….write your own joke.

Why they decided to let this out in the Friday news dump hour is anyone’s guess. But the whole campaign is smelling like the Hindenburg.
I think it was a desperate move to try and change the subject from Mitt’s tax returns. One of the first questions Ryan was asked was how many years of tax returns did he turn over to Mitt. Answer was 4. He released two, just like Mitt. I’ll bet he’d have released more, but that would have made Mitt look worse.
And it’s not just Friday news dump. He’s competing with the last two days of the olympics.
Boxturtle (Mitt’s either playing eleventy dimensional chess or his media folks suck)
That or the disastrous polls.
And speaking of the Olympics…what’s this DoD propaganda bs that was being advertised nonstop, called Stars Earn Stripes?
http://www.nbc.com/stars-earn-stripes/about/
There was some weird moment where they said something like “forget Chuck Norris, just send in Todd Palin.”
As Jon Walker noted, they’re using the term “stars” awfully loosely.
The thing that confuses me the most is: Why Friday? EVERYBODY in the media business knows thats when you get the least attention. Plus the Olympics.
He should have announced it today. Ain’t NOTHING happening newswise until the convention unless Israel hits Iran. Much more coverage. And his advisors should know that. Only explanation I can think of is that they were worried about it leaking early if they waited.
Boxturtle (it is also possible that his re-election team belongs in the clown car)
It’s a pl0y by the money party to make the debate for actions after the election between cuts and no tax increases and cuts and inconsequential tax increases.
They apparently wanted it to shove the whole tax-return/IRA scandal off the discussion agenda for yesterday’s Sunday talks.
But of course, we just found out that while Romney won’t release much in the way of his own tax returns, he demanded to see lots of Paul Ryan’s tax returns before he’d so much as consider him as a running mate.
It does seem to have changed the debate, few people are talking about Bain or tax returns anymore.
Believe it or not, I actually have some inside information on this. A little birdie told me that the internal focus groups have been really negative, but they have NOTHING to fill that time slot ready.
Boxturtle (I asked if any DoD money had gone into it, he just shrugged)
Friday night (Saturday morning) news dump to get the Sunday morning talkers and no one else paying attention. Plus….Mittens gets the keys to the Great GOP Wurlitzer, including the Rush quarto, Coulter diminuo, and Kristol octavo. And with Bain owning ClearChannel…
New reality show with live fire?
i think that it was the story connecting bain’s startup capital and the el salvadoran death squads. that story was beginning to get a little traction and had potential to really put the vampire in the vampire capital accusations.
throwing paul ryan out there was a perfect distraction, he’s front page news everywhere.
That’s the only thing that makes sense. Change the discussion on the Sunday talk shows.
Right again, Jane. I agree. Romney was sinking fast. Now at least for the next week the heat if off him as we all focus on his absurd selection–a selection that Rachel M. pointed out on meet the press yesterday, reduces the election to one question:
Do you like Medicare?
LOL
If you like Medicare then vote for Obama
If you don’t like Medicare then vote for Romney.
Oh hell, they are both asses. If Obama only had one of Lyndon Johnson’s balls, instead of giving away our health care options by refusing to allow even the debate of single payer as a possible option, Johnson would have marched his boots up the hill and slammed the heads of the Democratic majority in BOTH houses against the wall until they agreed to this simple bill:
“The minimum age eligibility requirement Medicare is now 0.”
Doubtful.
That might improve the ratings, though. It’s a little too Hunger Games for my taste, but I’m sure many would tune in to see someone shooting at Todd Palin.
Tweeted. Recommended.
Politiscoop has Ryan liquidating stocks right after meeting with Bernanke in 2008 Big win for the reality based if we can get that out.
Jane, this is OT but a semi-homeless friend and i have been brainstorming, over a 40oz, a new Reality TV show called The Dumpster Gormet. Do you think this concept might be ready for Prime Time?
I read the cast list. Palin is the only person I recognize, though I’d vaguely heard of Lachkey.
I’m not sure if this says good things about my level of culture of bad things.
Boxturtle (the show might succeed, depending on how many wardrobe malfunctions that WWF girl manages per show)
“so petty”
Just Say Meow !
Team Romney desperately wanted to change the Sunday Gabfests’ topic from Mitt’s tax returns to Sexytime Paul Ryan, the BOLD choice. And, voila! it worked.
Why can’t we have a decent media in America?
oh, and Hi Jane, been missin’ ya sister
two things –
Stoller (shocking, I know) made me realize the Romney campaign has been a serial clusterfuck because all the functional/semi competent opearatives are all now working for righteous SuperPacs $$$ -leaving Tagg, his brothers, and Young Republicans to run the burlesque that is Romney 2012
no one’s asked, but am anxious the Ryan pick plays right in to Pete Peterson’s hands – Dems can now run a Good Cop/Bad Cop campaign on SS, scaring the crap out of everyone with Ryan’s draconian plans while assuring the electorate they only want to make a “few responsible tweaks” to maintain it for posterity
Explain to me how picking someone who no personality, total ambivalence to any other human and worships a writer whose only claim to fame was utter contempt for those below her – whom she blamed for her misfortune as a child – is bold.
Ryan has accomplished nothing in congress and even less before he got there. A textbook technocrat – what Chris Hedges would refer to as a carrierist – whose thought patterns are off the wall. He’s the guy from accounting that never gets invited to the company Christmas party and for good reason.
LOL, Citizen’s United strikes again.

Bingo!
The two parties have been doing this for years now. The GOP comes out with a radical batshit crazy idea and floats it. The Democrats modify it slightly and sell it as a “win” that they held back the radical, crazy plan. Lather, rinse and repeat annually until 10 years later when the initial idea that was floated is considered more mainstream. The Dems are already selling their sellout as “saving Social Security.” Nevermind that Social Security was pillaged by their dumb backsides and now the dithering is about having to pay it back in a timely manner.
BOLD
Not my adjective to describe Mitt’s choice, but certainly a preferred one among our Swoony Elite Media.
Obviously a new use of the term bold of which I was not previously aware.
Villagespeak. They adore him.
Loved it.
Who wants to be that Pawlenty didn’t cry?????
C’mon.
A commenter on my post yesterday says the choice enables the Kochs to run billions of ads on deficit monsters and the horrors of Entitlements going to other people.
The joke is the cosmic joke observing small minds machinations that amount to nothing but division and hate of the other. I put this quote in the latest Just Say Now post
“In the final analysis, dharma, righteousness, always wins,
never unrighteousness.
Truth is always victorious; untruth always fails in the end.
Patience, forbearance, always wins out, not anger.
One who is patient becomes established in the Absolute, in Brahman.”

All the best to you

This is my truth and I laugh at the psychopathic fools
Jesus it’s crazy out there.
Holy shit he answered back
Laughing his ass off as he said
Yea I know.
Good to see someone keeping their eye on the ball here.
Not such a good smell but it is going to be comical to watch these two pretzels twist their words(lies) camouflaging their draconian policies.
If you are a grandma or grandpa and you cast a vote for these fools…
Then you are the fool,…
.. you are left with obama….the murderer
And they both let Israel dictate their foreign policy.
not a lot of inspiration here is there.
yea thanks for that…that little pissant got hit with the ugly stick from inside out and now it’s 24/7 ryan mr jugear concavefaceman
da new breed Ayn Rand Homo Sapian Proboscis Ad Nauseum
And Romney will now have to carry this baggage, too.
Well, a second Obama term can’t be worse than a Romney presidency for the next four years…
…not that I think that that’s much of a reason to vote for Obama.
Looking forward to voting for third-party candidates in Nov!
Worst that can happen for Ryan is that he becomes the next Sarah Palin with national recognition and a small group of crazies who will follow his every tweet. He probably thinks he can ride it farther politically than Palin did, but he’s wrong.
Come on, why not vote for the R and R ticket.
One hasn’t paid any taxes for the last 10 years and the other drove the Weinermobile.
What’s not to like about em.
Absolutely! I agree with you and cbl, too:
That’s it in a nutshell.

Agreed young people flee his district for jobs in the city leaving behind older Whites who vote GOP. Older Whites want their Medicare.

Ann Coulter
Both these Women while not notable as news sources or for the accuracy of their political predictions are very reliable indicators of what the Crazy Conservatives are saying they represent both the GOPers in the 1% and Fox News viewers.
Sure both I am sure will change their minds and back Mitt but these slips of what they really think are telling.
Can Mitt really win without GOP 1%er, Fox News viewers and Commenters like Ann and Monica fully on board?
