Our front page editor John Chandley, aka Scarecrow, has been around FDL since we opened the doors in 2004, and I can’t think of anyone who has been a more loyal friend to the community. His insights and his passion for justice have inspired all of us throughout the years.
People may have noticed that for several weeks now, I’ve been on front page editing duty in his place. What they didn’t know is that John was recently diagnosed with metastatic melanoma which has spread to his lungs and his brain.
John is in the hospital right now, waiting for Glaxo Smith Klein to approve him for the use of dabrafenib, just about the only known drug effective on treating his form of melanoma after it has spread to the brain, because it can cross the blood/brain barrier. I don’t want to get into how the thieves at Glaxo Smith Klein are charging thousands of dollars per month for a drug that was developed with NIH funding or that John has to be hospitalized to afford it even if he is approved, because I’ll just be shaking with rage and it will detract from the point of this post, which is to wish him the best for a speedy recovery.
John didn’t have WiFi access in the hospital so we bought him a wireless card yesterday and Phred and her husband delivered it to him in the hospital last night. So I know you can read this, Scarecrow.
Get better fast John. We miss you and love you.

From the old days, John — Caw! Caw!
Best wishes to Scarecrow!
Boxturtle (This doesn’t mean I don’t like seeing Jane on the front page on occasion)
(((((Scarecrow)))))
Sending all sorts of healing thoughts and white light to you.
O No….More bad news. I am so sorry, and Jane, sorry about your friend. Blessings and prayers and all good thoughts. Please keep us up to date.
Hope you get well soon. Thinking of you.
Let’s go John! Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers while remembering the great times in Connecticut during the 2006 campaign!
Get well.
Tim
What? This is terrible news.
I’m so glad you got him the e-card, Jane. I wish we could get one to SD also.
(((Scarecrow)))
Very best wishes for healing. Sending white light your way.
Jane, can you tell us if John was also a Viet Nam vet?
All best, John! This is a very well edited blog.
never knew your name before john but I do know I would itch with delight whenever I saw you were the author of a post, I would wait till I had more time then a simple scan through it, the content would abound, the insight would inspire
looking forward to your next John!
Please accept my healing thoughts and prayers, Scarecrow. What a hard road you’ll walk for a bit; may you do it In Beauty.
Thanks for sharing this with us Jane.
Wishing and willing all of the comfort and healing the universe has to offer to our beloved Scarecrow.
I’m sending positive thoughts and wishes for success with the treatments, John. I have always appreciated your good and smart work at FDL.
Get well and don’t give up!
bg
Rest up and come back soon Scare, we miss you!
Aw jeez. John, we love you man. We miss you. All of the best thoughts I can send are on their way.
My thoughts of concern and healing (and a hug) to you, John. You’ve been kind to me in the past, and I wish you the very best.
Sending you lots of peace, healing vibes and best wishes. We miss you here. Good thoughts coming your way… best, onitgoes
really, really, miss your byline and ironic humor, Scarecrow!
((((scarecrow))))
Thanks for this, Jane. I know the staff of FDL has strongly felt his absence.
Much love, Scarecrow!
Healing thoughts from North Carolina. Wish you the best.
Plenty of great big bear hugs coming your way, John, squeezing through the tubes from Texas.
((((Scarecrow))))
Fly high. Heal well.
Yes demi, John is a Viet Nam vet. The first place this manifested was in his lungs, and there was some suspicion that something he inhaled over there may have caused it.
Best wishes for a successful treatment and quick recovery.
Hi Scarecrow,
I love your humor and amazing sense of irony re: some terrible policies. Instead of crying you always make me laugh. Keep up your fight and your wonderful sense of humor.
(((((Scarecrow))))))
Scarecrow, get well soon and come back to us. Missed your posts and now understand the reason.
(((Scarecrow))) (((SouthernDragon)))
Yep. And, Richard too.
I had a friend succumb to cancer that the doctors felt was related to Agent Orange.
Good Lord.
Love your stuff. Hang in and you have my best wishes and thoughts. FDL wouldn’t be what it is without you.
I thought melanoma was skin cancer that then metastasizes to other locations like lungs, brain, etc. Of course, there were lots of things floating around in the air in VN that could affect the skin as well as the lungs.
In any case, much love and healing thoughts and wishes to our Scarecrow. Reading about the drug makes it sound like a HUGE breakthrough in cancer treatment.
John–
I’ve never “met” you, but appreciate all the education and insight you’ve provided me. Best wishes and healing thoughts.
My thoughts are with you, John!
John Chandley, you have long had my utmost respect and appreciation.
Your calm, compassionate understanding and wisdom has much shaped Firedoglake and its adherence to best practice and best example.
Please know, that like Southern Dragon, you shall now be much in my thoughts and concerns.
I wish you only the best, a most-speedy recovery, and a rapid return to all those who love and respect you.
Namaste
DW
Shades of what happened to Southern Dragon, a fellow Vietnam veteran — he went in to the VA for lung trouble and found out he has a Stage 4 cancer that started in the lungs and spread to a (so far very small) brain tumor.
I had thought that also…and wondered about the connection for SD. I know a local CA case that is also probably related and have known of ALS connection. What tragedy and waste.
(((Scarecrow)))
I think we’re all making those connections right now.
John!
Get Better Soon, Please.
Teddy
dearest brother,elder,shaman,mensch ‘Crow
sending all the healing vibes I can summon for your recovery and comfort. I am forever in your debt for all the crap you have cleared from my brain, I selfishly ask you find a way to soldier on and return to us
best to send along this virtual basket of kisses and hugs to you as well – damn, I’ll be holding you in my heart
I’m very sorry to hear this terrible news. Best wishes and prayers for a full recovery.
John,
You’ve been a staple of the FDL family for almost a decade! Get well soon, and please report back to the front page ASAP! America (and the FDL family) need you back!
See you soon!
Jo Fish
My love and healing thoughts for you John. You are brightest of bright stars at FDL. I will be thinking of you and looking for updates daily.
Cancer and those pharmaceuticals ain’t for sissies. And you are certainly no sissy. May all the support that we and your loved ones can provide gives you an extra edge.
Healing vibes and deep appreciation to Scarecrow!
Nooooo! Say it ain’t so.
My brother-in-law, now in hospital, who would “fit in”, very well, with the consciousness of this community, with FDL, Jane, also suffers from severe lung damage and, without doubt, his time in Vietnam contributed significantly to that damage and his suffering for decades.
Thank you for this post and the opportunity of it being passed along to Scarecrow.
My appreciation, as well, to phred and her husband for their contribution toward making it possible that John may see what we think of him and what he means to each and everyone of us who have come to appreciate him these many years.
DW
From high up in a dark, silent balcony seat a seldom heard voice is found; a loud CAW! CAW! in appreciation of all that you have been, are now, and always will be.
Hey Scarecrow, I’m sending you lots of healing vibes and good wishes. May this treatment ensure you a good recovery.
Many of us around here fondly remember your morning posts from the “olden days” of FDL :-) Here’s hoping that we get to read something from you again soon!
To be medical for a moment. Yes melanoma has been linked to Agent orange. But potentially even more significant it is related to Ozone depletion. Especially prominent increased rates in the Southern Hemisphere Even many of the fish on the Great Barrier Reef are now afflicted with melanoma http://articles.latimes.com/2012/aug/02/science/la-sci-fish-skin-cancer-20120802
Sending out positive healing thoughts to you Scarecrow. Much healing white light and good energy.
Bummer. Here’s some metaphorical straw, keep it under your hat.
Yes, plus General Westmoreland keeps coming to mind….Creeps.
(((Scarecrow))) Been missing your posts. Sending prayers and healing thoughts from Detroit. Stay strong, stay positive. You can do this!
Get well my straw friend.
Say it ain’t so ‘Crow. I wondered why I wasn’t seeing you in my email box
Come back soon my friend, and healthy
I have been a habitual reader of Firedoglake since the close to the beginning when I found my way here via Glenn Greenwald – but I rarely comment. However, I like to come out of the woodwork every so often and this seems an appropriate time to wish Scarecrow all the best. Thoughts are with you to a speedy recovery, and I look forward to your continued insightful and engaging postings.
I’m very sorry to hear this, but I am sure you will be getting well.
John, among all the great FDL writers and fighters–past and present–you remain at the very top. Thank you for sharing your powerful and influential thinking on so many topics.
Fervent hopes from the Texas hills for your full recovery. We need that strong, righteous voice from Boston.
Scarecrow!
I am sending healing and loving thoughts to you. Reiki as well. I promise to tell you when it snows in South Carolina. You have to get well for it and believe me, the real political snow won’t happen till 2014 in this state!
Now, smile cause we all love you. That’s the TWOOPH!
Loving thoughts to you and your family.
Scarecrow, you have been in my thoughts in your absence here, and now will be in my prayers. Your brave example, in standing up against the Keystone Pipeline, and your compassionate moderation of this site have been its essence. I along with so many others look forward to your actual presence here again – your good influence upon it is ongoing, and even more so now that we know a little about what you are going through.
The last comments I remember reading from you here were in stunned shock that anyone could even consider not voting. I think you changed minds in that advocacy, so bravo, and be well, our friend!
My best to all.
Lots of healing thoughts and warm Pacific breezes wafting your way from the ‘Nard. Get well, Scarecrow!
Oh Scarecrow, how boring to be in hosp, hope you get the drugs. We’ll have to buckle down and do our own research for energy policy issues, but you have set us on the right path, we will do our best.
I am setting you up on my Send Healing Rays app, along with SD. Looking forward to your first-person research into the health care system, if you are so inclined. (((Scarecrow)))
Scarecrow was a very important part of why I kept coming back. I always looked forward to his posts.
Best wishes, John. Get well!
Thanks CT. Many thanks to you & everyone who stops by here today to send good vibes to Scarecrow.
A good time to de-lurk if there ever was one!
(((Scarecrow)))
I remember the old days when we did things like “Zed” and raced to be the first to comment on your early morning posts.
I admire you a great deal and want to send healing thought your way.
John, having survived the depths of breast cancer hell, know that I am virtually and spiritually holding your hand.
Best Wishes from a newbie, missing your insight and commentary.
Scarecrow doesn’t know me but I know him a little bit and wish him the best.
Oh no. Good luck, Scare. Please get better, we need your voice.
Good idea, demi, if he is up for it. How can we do it — can omali or gw find out if he even wants to connect to the collective? Someone said he does not approve of such gadgets, but … Worth asking him, to start.
((((scarecrow)))) sending white light and healing energy.
I don’t really know John, but I feel like I know him.
So let me add my voice to the chorus of people here wishing you well, John.
Best wishes, John. Get well!
We’re all sending good thoughts and love to you, Scarecrow. Look forward to your next post. (((((Hugs)))))
Long a part of my daily pattern, you are sorely missed. Recover soon, your insights are vital. Live long and prosper…
Best wishes, Scarecrow. I very much liked your thoughts. Get well, please.
HA! “zed” – I’d forgotten that
This will not do. Please get well soon.
Just spoke to John briefly. His doctor was in the room talking to him and he said it was “mostly good news.” He couldn’t talk much but looks like he’s been approved for the drug and will be taking it at home, and it will be “mostly paid for.”
I’ll update after he calls back. But he’s been waiting for weeks, so this is a huge, huge relief.
Scarecrow, we already know our health care system sucks, so you don’t have to do anything dramatic to prove it. No excuses now; please beat this thing.
This is all just so very heartbreaking! Makes me want to cry. :~(
(((Southern Dragon))) (((Scarecrow John)))
I wish him the best.
Thanks for sharing the good news, Jane.
Aw that is great to hear – thank you Jane!
Scarecrow! Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Excellent news!
thanks so much ! xoxoxox
I honestly believe that the good thoughts of members of this community is absolutely essential for the soul. John has been such an essential member of the community as has Southern Dragon.
Thanks for the good news on Scarecrow @ 78, Jane.
I’m a long-time reader/lurker here, and have always appreciated Scarecrow/John’s voice and wisdom.
All the best to you, John, and the whole FDL family.
{{{{{{{ scarecrow}}}}}} in my thoughts and prayers.
My Mother died of cancer during that “war’ and I’ve always wondered why we spend so much chasing a boogie man in some far off land when the real killing enemy , cancer , is right here at home.
So had I. That was used frequently in my noobie days at FDl! It had something to do with the comment numbering that began with zero (zed really isn’t zero but we used it that way!
Best wishes.
Thanks for the update Jane and the good news
That is excellent news!!
Thanks Jane
Apologies for being late to this post.
Sending plenty of positive thoughts your way, Mr. Chandley. And very good news that you were approved for the treatment!
I have been lurking here for years and I can’t thank all the contributors enough for all that I have learned on so many topics. Scarecrow, you have always stood out with such well written articles, bringing much information and wit to the conversation. I sincerely wish you all the best. Get well and hurry back.
Best wishes, Scarecrow!
Jane,
Thank you for sharing with your FDL family so that we are able to keep Scarecrow in our thoughts and prayers.
Now Scarecrow,
I know you are reading every post. So, here is yet another…Focus on getting better. You are loved and appreciated at the Lake more than you know!
Much appreciated, Jane, as will be any updates or news.
DW
oh no! *hands on monitor* sending ‘crow warm positive healing thoughts and prayers
thanks for the news and the update jane. what can we, the FDL community, do to help?
(((Scarecrow)))
Glad to hear the good news on the update, Jane.
{{{{{Scarecrow}}}}} Healing energy and best wishes for you from the north.
All my best, John. Get better, that’s an order.
Jane, is it possible to name the hospital? There may be FDLer’s who would like to make a personal visit if John feels up to it and would like to see them. Or send well wishes in physical form, maybe to the house?
Same with SD.
John,
You have my respect and my well wishes for you. Keep fighting so you can come back to us. You will be in my prayers.
Wow. Best of wishes to you my friend.
((((John)))) Sending love and good wishes your way. Take Care and fight.
Um, Scarecrow might have to chime in and monitor this thread – it’s getting a tad too long.
Seriously, though, that is great news, thank you Jane!
(((((Scarecrow)))))
Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers!
Best wishes and our prayers for (((Scarecrow))!! I have always enjoyed his posts!!
Hello, John. Glad it seems you will be getting the medicine you need. Get well. We enjoy having you here. I do too.
Me too. Thank you so much for your beautiful and elegant self, John.
Rock the treatment! Good vibes abound!
You are in my thoughts and prayers Scarecrow,I know you will hang in there.
I learned during the health care fight that the pharmaceutical companies monitor the cancer bulletin boards and social networks very closely, and if anyone is complaining about the fact that they’re dying because they can’t afford a particular drug, they apparently get what they need and suddenly go silent.
It’s the way the pharmaceutical companies keep anyone’s cause from building up and gaining critical mass such that the outrageous injustice of the whole system gets overthrown.
So a squeaky wheel never hurt anything, far as I can tell.
Well then, let the loud squeaking begin!
Thanks Jane. Missing you, Scarecrow. Hoping for the best.
There’s a whole army of sqeaky wheels around here.
((((Scarecrow)))))
Scarecrow! I was wondering just what could get you off the Net Dude:)
I think your next post should be why Americans pay so much for drugs that we invest but in other countries these drugs are cheaper.
Trying to keep you focused Dude people need a reason to hold on. I wish I could get on the net in the early mornings like I used to early morning posts were a great time for coffee, talking to friends and of course plotting how to make the world a better place for everyone.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2aBOTNGWMY
Hope you like Bob Seger
Best Wishes…may the good angels be close with compassion
Sorry “I think your next post should be why Americans pay so much for drugs that we invest:
Should read
I think your next post should be why Americans pay so much for drugs that we invent ” My bad sorry
Southern Dragon is sick too?
Squeak for John! And, those suffering with similar maladies.
Squeak!
(It’s like a Flash Mob Squeak. For those who not only need it, but deserve it.)
((((Scarecrow)))))))!!!!
Okay, adding you to the recipient list for the healing vibes, and redoubling the vibrations, sent out to you.
I should have realized you were absent from my twitter feed…but I’ve been busier than usual and absent myself most of the time.
So, so sorry to hear this. Mor Vietnam-related illness? And, well, i’m prepared to make some wheels squeak on social media if it will help you get what you need.
Know that we here at fdl, long-time firepups and less so, will be thinking of you and wishing you all that you need to get well. Your posts are always valuable reading; seeing your byline always gets me to pause, click, and read.
Jane, thanks for letting us know.
A post on this subject would be cool.
Last word was Southern Dragon will be coming home soon. If he feels up to it, he’ll be able to connect then. He really doesn’t “approve” of smartphones, etc., doesn’t have a laptop. We’ll have to see when he feels up to dropping by to wave at us for the first time.
Its great to see so many people who I haven’t seen in a while all on the same thread. Its good to know that even if our friends drift away when we need them they all come running.
Thanks for the good news SD is coming home:) Shinny Happy Snoopy Dance:)
It’s always like that, isn’t it?
Hi ya Things.
John! See what you’ve gone and done, now?
Out of the woods, so many people love you and are blessing you with their thoughts.
Scarecrow, your wise words are appreciated by probably more people than you imagine. From the sometimes quieter regions of the Lake, sending many warm and caring thoughts to you.
Jane, thank you for sharing the news and giving us a chance to send our thoughts.
((((Scarecrow))))
I have been wondering and wondering where you were. You can’t possibly know how much your comments and posts have meant to me over the years, many years. Looking forward to your next one very soon!
As a fellow old fart who has spent more than my fair share of time in the hospital in the last year and a guy who has really appreciated your posts without even knowing about your job as editor, you have my best wishes.
Scarecrow,miss you big time.
Hope you feel better soon.
Scarecrow, so sorry to read this news. No stranger to melanoma. The ability to cross the blood brain barrier is huge and I am so hopeful that this will prove an effective treatment. Lots of love coming your way.
Good luck, John. Praying for you.
Gosh Scarecrow,
I counted almost 100 different firepups commenting on this thread.
I hope you know how much you are appreciated by all of us.
John, so sorry to hear of your tribulations – if you need help of any kind, let me know.
Excellent news! Both re Scarecrow’s drug and SD’d home-coming. The cats will either mob him or not speak.
TCU, the memo re the Dragonman is here.
I kept telling John, if we have to go to the mattresses, we’re ready to do that.
Fortunately it never came to that. He should have the drugs later this week, according to his doctor.
Hoping for the best.
So sorry to hear of your troubles, Scarecrow. You’ll be in my thoughts. Best wishes for a speedy remission.
((((((((((Scarecrow))))))))))
Wishing you the best, (((Scarecrow))). Sending healing thoughts your way. Hope the new drugs work to send this cancer into remission soon. We miss you here at the Lake.
Damn, had two friends come down with cancers from exposure in VN, and another who worked for GSA inventorying & disposing of VN equpment, planes etc. after the war who developed lung & kidney disease a year ago. The gift that keeps on giving.
Get well soon, Scarecrow!
Sincere thanks to Jane for the post. And also for the wifi attachment. I can’t express my appreciation enough for all the kind comments and good wishes. I’m very touched. You are a wonderful community.
As Jane noted in the comments, I got lucky. I had a great team of doctors working every day to get approval of the drugs I need, and I should start receiving them later this week. Then my Doctors say, “you will start to feel better.”. So they sent me home today with a list of instructions. I could not have gotten all the clearances without their help.
Best wishes to our colleague, Southern Dragon and to all of you facing similar challenges
John,
I really like that “you will start to feel better” bit. Listen to your doctors very carefully on that point, please.
Your contributions to the community here and to world are very much appreciated.
Hey ya, Scarecrow!
I’m so glad you got the Good Drugs.
Now, we just wait for the Magic to happen.
And, we will continue to Lift You Up.
I love you Scarecrow and miss you dearly. Heal quickly, best done with Hot Fudge Super Sundaes.
Scarecrow, Checking back and I see that you are HOME! I was recalling earlier that “getting better” doesn’t really happen until the hospital has been left behind, so this is very good news to hear.
Here is hoping that you Feel. Better. Soon!
SNOOPY HAPPY DANCE!!
how wonderful to be at home *one legged snoopy happy dance* for ya crow – yay to sleeping in your own bed!!!
So nice to hear from the man his own self!
John, It is good to hear that you are at home where you can get the rest and sleep you need right now, and that you will be starting that new medication soon. We have missed you a lot and in fact were just having our nightly We-Sure-Miss-Scarecrow conversation when I saw this. We hope and pray for your successful recovery from this. Get to feeling better soon, we miss you!
So many loving words sent to you by so many loving persons, Scarecrow; your kindness and caring returned abundantly. May healing come to you swiftly and surely.
Scarecrow, the best crow ever. We are pulling for you here in Norcal.
Oh, John – sending all good energy thoughts to you. Smooch.
Woot! Delighted to hear that they sent you home TODAY : )
I would also like to add that I subscribe to Elliot’s Hot Fudge Sundae Cure… Man does not get well by prescriptions alone ; )
Hope you not only feel better, but are better soon!
Your wonderful posts and commentary are sorely missed…
(((Scarecrow))) Sending you hugs and prayers from Ohio.
Absolutely great that you are out of the damned hospital! Very best wishes for the drug treatment. Rest and take care of yourself.
Well, well, well Mr. Crow.
I feel like I know you very well even though we’ve never met. In some ways I think we know each other better than we would, if we had met.
Writing is like that.
Love your passion for justice, dignity and grace in all things.
You are special.
I will pray for you, my friend.
Be at peace.

What a lovely and gracious comment. All the best (((Scarecrow))). Come back to us soon.
Best wishes and lots of hope for a speedy recovery.
So good to see your post EG,
I never commented at FDL until you encouraged me to delurk.

(((Scarecrow)))
Just catching up to this now.
Best wishes to John, tryly an FDL Legend and Hero.
Thanks Mz. Hamsher for the info and update.
This is sad beyond words, hope MUST endure and rise up and heal.
It just must.
Ok, been out of touch, what’s up with Southern Dragon? Anyone?
Awww, Scarecrow! So glad you’re home, so sad you’re dealing with this.
Listen to Jane – she’s an awesome guru for the land of big medicine and she’ll remind you to rest and allow yourself to recover.
I’ve learned from my heartsisters that prayer does matter (in whatever fashion works for you) so you’ll be at the top of my list.
Heal, rest, and come back and kick ass.
Ah Scarecrow, missing your insights, please get better!!! Gotta decommission the ‘c’reeps. Jane, a rock and hard place for me these last two years. ama loves their toys and are sooo slow with the latest therapies to heal. Hope your well, and much heart all around the FDL beacon. wilbo
((((Scarecrow)))) going home, and getting the drugs, great news. XOXOXOX
So great to see you checked in, Scarecrow! It must be good to be home and to have a plan for the future. Keep us posted!
Sorry to hear of your health issues, and SD’s too. I didn’t know he was sick.
It’s good that Jane knows how the vampires work and she brings the flashlight, stakes and holy water. Wishing you both well.
The Legend of the Scarecrow.
Hi Scareyman, It was a real downer to encounter this post from Jane and find that you were in serious cancer trouble and so glad to hear that things are beginning to work out for you. I hope the drugs get you healthy again, quickly. I always look forward to your great writing here and to the care and integrity shown in your posts. You’re a fixture here, and a continuing focus of this wonderful and good-hearted community. Please get well quickly, so we can see you scaring the PTB and educating us all again, soon.
And thank you, Jane, for posting this and giving everyone a chance to express their best hopes and good feelings for John and his work.
Best wishes for healing John, Scarecrow.
Just now catching up.
X2 to what’s been said by all.
Here’s hoping you have a pair of dry socks in today’s rucksack. And don’t worry about the dirty skivvies…there’s water and soap aplenty.
From your Brother of Shared Experiences.

Remember you as one of the first FDLers to volunteer to temporarily “move” to Massachusetts to knock on doors to help Ned Lamont beat Joe Lieberman in the Democratic Primary.
Fight this thing hard and get well soon!
Get well soon!
My first words on FDL. Get well soon. you have been an inspiration to me and mine. your wisdom IS being passed on to the next generation through my children. Thank you and good luck.
SoutherDragon has squamous cell lung cancer that has spread to his lymph system and a small brain tumor. He’s in a VA hospital being treated.
We did not know this either, Margaret, thank you for the information. Very sorry to hear this. Seems as if the awful things always happen to the really good people.
My dearest love and most heartfelt wishes to our cherished friends in the hospital, SD and Scarecrow.
Best wishes, John. Glad to hear you received help obtaining and affording the medicines.
and to Southern Dragon (just saw this news at 191).
Southern Dragon: If you see this, please take a look at this guy. He is amazing and I am not kidding in the least:

Take good care, SD
I hate to hear this news about two people whom I admire and number among my most respected and beloved friends. Get well quickly, gentlemen!
Petitions for the swift remission and complete recovery of both Scarecrow and Southern Dragon have been placed at the grotto of Massabielle.
