(h/t to bluebutterfly in his comment at burqa’s Oxdown diary)
Recently the Canadian government has failed to comply with a court order to demand the release of Kadir, the Canadian citizen captured at age 15 and imprisoned in GITMO. The Canadian government waits, "saying repeatedly it would wait for the US proceedings to play out. “
Imagine yourself as one of these:
An old man in Afghanistan returning from market with a bag of tomatoes, pounced upon, handcuffed arms behind his back, tied on a lead rope with others of his fate like a horse or donkey, thrown into prison and abused, flown off to GITMO where all is foreign; – - waiting….
A powerless mother of 2 young children, wife of a militant husband with whom she has no influence, swooped down upon by gunbearing foreigners, not heard from since; if even alive – - waiting….
The 2 young boys ages either 6 and 8 or 7 and 9, powerless to influence any political or militant activity of anyone; assaulted in the night and hauled off to prison; starved for food and water for days to weaken their bodies and swell their brains; ants and other insects put on their legs to torture out of them information the boys could not have – - if alive, waiting….
Some 18,000 detainees still held in prisons in the Middle East and GITMO, the majority of whom US authorities have admitted had done nothing against Americans – - still waiting…
Imprisoned journalists, guilty of nothing but having the courage to tell the world the truth about what is really happening in areas of bombings, carnage and death – - waiting….
Millions of true Americans, knowing that unjustified arrest, imprisonment and torturous interrogation constitutes criminal policy which cannot be twisted into Orwellian Newspeak as ”criminalizing policy”, promised return of The Rule of Law, not men – - still waiting….

Sorry, the last is not true. I am not and will not wait. I am and will act to make it so. I guess that means it does not apply to me, but some things you do not wait for.
I did not mean to imply that we wait without doing what we can to bring about change; but nevertheless, in spite of all we do we’re still waiting for our government to correct these injustices.
When will justice prevail?
Thank you, acquarius74. Very touching.
In my lifetime, I hope. Thank you, Jim.
” All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.
He who wrestles with us strengthens our nerves and sharpens our skill. Our antagonist is our helper.
Hypocrisy can afford to be magnificent in its promises; for never intending to go beyond promises; it costs nothing.
Never despair; but if you do, work on in despair.
No one could make a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little.
Our patience will achieve more than our force.
The wise determine from the gravity of the case; the irritable, from sensibility to oppression; the high minded, from disdain and indignation at abusive power in unworthy hands. “

Last night on Charlie Rose, David Brooks talked about Obama’s ’self confidence’; said Obama had remarked in one of the planning sessions during the campaign that he was a better speech writer than his speechwriter, a better politician than his advisers, etc..
Do we have another Bush ego hidden behind better crafted wordology and speeches delivered more smoothly?
What’s ‘hidden’ is even more dangerous than you suggest.
That is being revealed bit by bit, all wrapped in pretty words, but for the full picture…well, we’re waiting..
Some pictures aren’t pretty. What picture of a Israel firster is? Remember that look on his face when he was asked about Middle East weapons by Helen Thomas? There it was for all to see..the mask slipped..the wrapping fell off for a few seconds and it was not a pretty sight. He came out of nowhere to become president..or did he? To understand the present, it is always a good idea to look at the past.

Thank you to the person who recommended. This subject deserves to be in the Top Ten every day. These victims are human beings; and congress and Obama’s administration talks, and talks, and talks….some are dying as the sound of their talk fills the universe.
Back in June of last year when Chairman Conyers hearing on torture had as guests Phillipe Sands, Marjorie Cohn, Bruce Fein, and others, one of the Repug representatives complained that there had already by 60 hearings on the subject of torture. Talk does not heal wounds, right wrongs nor free imprisoned innocents.
well said, acq!
Thank you, greenwarrior!
““The CIA’s Office of General Counsel [this would include current Acting CIA General Counsel John Rizzo] met with the Attorney General [John Ashcroft], the National Security Adviser [Condoleezza Rice], the Deputy National Security Adviser [Stephen Hadley], the Legal Adviser to the National Security Council [John Bellinger], and the Counsel to the President [Alberto Gonzales] in mid-May 2002 to discuss the possible use of alternative interrogation methods [on Abu Zubaydah] that differed from the traditional methods used by the U.S. military and intelligence community. At this meeting, the CIA proposed particular alternative interrogation methods, including waterboarding.”
The report continues to implicate more Bush officials: “On July 13, 2002, according to CIA records, attorneys from the CIA’s Office of General Counsel [including Rizzo] met with the Legal Adviser to the National Security Council [Bellinger], a Deputy Assistant Attorney General from OLC [likely John Yoo], the head of the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice [Michael Chertoff], the chief of staff to the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation [Kenneth Wainstein], and the Counsel to the President [Alberto Gonzales] to provide an overview of the proposed interrogation plan for Abu Zubaydah.”
It makes clear that sign-off for torture comes from Condoleezza Rice, acting with the advice of her ever-present lawyer, John Bellinger. Another figure making a key appearance is an Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel named M. Edward Whelan III–presumably the same Ed Whelan who is presently melting his keyboard with defenses of the torture-enablers at National Review. “

” First a blue-ribbon commission should be constituted to get to the bottom of what happened, to declassify and publish the still hidden documents concerning the NSC process and what went on in the Justice Department, the Pentagon, and the CIA. The commission should take a long, hard look at Richard Cheney’s self-serving claims that “torture works.” And it should try to steer the country to a solution of these questions that restores a national consensus. If you support the idea of an accountability commission, take a few seconds to go on line here and note your endorsement of the proposal. The second prong will be a prosecutor who can take a look at all the facts and decide who should be charged for criminal wrongdoing. “

Thanks for the link to the Harper’s article and the petition. I just signed on. EW and/or Jane are probably onto this already, but if not I’ll try to do an Oxdown diary to promote the petition.
as always asquarius74 a terrific diary
Thanks, perris. I try. I really post out of frustration because someone with better skills won’t take up the pen.
Speaking of which; would you consider writing a diary on the critical message ref’d by bluebutterfly? Go here to yesterday’s (4/24/09) article by Scott Horton entitled: “Straight To The Top”, in Harper’s. It links to the report released by Holder on 04/23/09 (16 pages). The article by Scott Horton decodes some of the redacted parts in the Holder report and gives the names.
This Holder report pretty well lays out who knew what when they knew it.
It is too important for me to do. It requires finer analytical skills than I possess.
How about it, perris??
Duh, forgot the link. here ’tis. Go here to yesterday’s (4/24/09) article by Scott Horton entitled: “Straight To The Top”, in Harper’s.
