House Passes Wild Horse and Burro ProtectionsToday, the House voted handily in favor of a bill, H.R. 1018 introduced by Natural Resources Committee Chairman Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.), to provide sweeping new protections for wild horses and burros inhabiting public lands in the West. The vote was 239-185.
Rahall’s bill, known as the Restore Our American Mustangs (ROAM) Act and co-authored by Reps. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.) and Ed Whitfield (R-Ky.), comes in response to woeful mismanagement of wild horses and burros by the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM). BLM has been rounding up thousands of horses from our public lands, and then adopting out fewer than half of the animals they capture. As a result, BLM is now holding about 31,000 wild horses in captivity, with taxpayers footing the bill. If the program isn’t revamped, there will soon be more wild horses in captivity than in the wild (there are now estimated to be approximately 35,000 horses and burros roaming federal lands in 10 Western states, with a majority of the horses in Nevada and Wyoming).

Wonderful news. May the majestic wild horse run free forever. Boehner is a first class A-hole. It is pathetic that he blames the cost of the horses and not the cost of two illegal invasions plus the corrupt Fed and the banks just for starters. Honestly, has that man ever said anything that made sense? Congratulations to you for being part of the effort to save these horses. My replies to you will be slow for awhile. Wet grass, hose, chasing grandson in the dark, rock garden..haha..wipeout as the old song goes. I was having fun until the shoulder met the rock in a crash landing. Am now a one finger typist for many weeks to come.
Don’t think me cruel when I say I’m relieved. Had envisioned worse. Stay well, and thanks for the links. I followed up on your KSM story at Jim’s diary. Think I found the pic you were searching for. Those stories in the Asia Times (one with the pics) sound more plausible to me than the BS we’ve been fed.
Lies, lies, and more lies sums it up quite well. Comparing US MSM and other country’s news..ha..the great truth gap divide. Do you have a link to the picture and I can tell you if it is the one I’ve searched for?
Blue, I think this is it. The story here also fits. The pic is near the bottom. The link in that article to the very important article (the battle in which KSM killed) is a bad link. Here is a good one.
These are very important stories (both in Asia Times, dates critical). These reports speak of KSM’s wife/widow and one child , while the tribunal reports speak of two children and don’t mention a wife. The Asia Times article states that the widow was later shipped off to Egypt and does not mention fate of the child.
Hope these were the pics you referred to.
i don’t see a picture in the first article you linked to.
greenwarrior and bluebutterfly: I’ve posted corrections over at Jim’s diary and at EW. Here is the correction again, BUT the same pics I got the first time are blank with x’s in the block. You might want to go to the link I gave at Jim’s. He got the pics and commented on them.
greenwarrior is correct..we are pictureless..The battle in September and KSM’s death was written about outside of the US…but then..the US says he was captured alive and sent to Guantanamo in March 2003. Smoke and mirrors everywhere. If the fake KSM was captured in September, his testimony at Guantanamo is important as to his identity. He mentioned that his children were tortured four months before March 2003 which brings us back to Nov/02. If he was arrested in Sept, then it would make sense that after not producing wanted information, his children would have been used against him a month or so later in November. A widow and one child in Sept /02 is rather at odds with him saying he has a wife and two children in March /03. As we know he was held and tortured at various sites, it fits that he is pictured on that rendition flight in Nov /02. He is also in a few Abu Ghraib pictures where chemical burns are visible on his forearm and numerous other injuries are evident. The body build that Jim mentioned is unmistakable. In one of the pictures his face is blocked, but he has distinctive sections of hair that fall onto his forehead. One of the pictures has a prisoner number…153863. Whoever he is, as Jim asked months ago, where are the children?

Blue, I’ll try again for the rendition flight pic. Did you post a comment about it some time back?
I’ll answer you at Jim’s.
o.k.
Thanks for the post and for caring enough to follow this.
Thanks, Mary. Since my childhood I haven’t been able to not care. Thank you for being a ‘horse person’.
The only way horses will really be able to live on public lands is if public lands welfare ranching is ended. We taxpayers greatly subsidize the continued desertificaiton and weed invasions caused by privately owned cattle and sheep on BLM and Forest lands. Ranchers hate horses, and BLM above all else enables ranchers continued destruction of public lands and waters. Ranchers view horses as competitors for “forage”, and seek to eliminate them. Increasingly, ranches and thus public lands permits in Nevada (which is where most of the big HMAs (Herd Mgmt Areas) are located are controlled by water speculators, foreign gold mines, and their ilk. Right now, 11 HMAs in Ely BLM lands are to be zeroed out. Because relentless rancher hatred of horses pervades BLM mgmt.- and also to clear the way for Las Vegas water pipelines and industrial solar plants that will blade off large swaths of sagebrush and Mojave transition veg. country HMAs.
Thank you sagesse. You state facts as I have studied them and as presented in my earlier diary on the real politics behind the desire to eliminate the wild horses. Unfortunately the wild horses do not contribute to campaign funds.
Watched the vote with a group of my nieces and nephews (ages 9-16) they were all incredibly interested and of course had not heard about the slaughter of wild horses snd burros. I encouraged the three teens to call their reps (obviously not voters but what the hell) and let them know what they were thinking. They did.
Acquarius thanks for keeping us up on this
Thank you, Leen. What a grand thing to encourage those young ones; they will need to stand guard in the future for the killers will never give up.
We’ve still got the tough fight in the senate. I’m hoping there will be enough of them that still care for the creatures to outvote those who only see dollar signs from slaughtering businesses, oil, mining, big cattle raisers and water control.
