This article at crooksandliars tells of the resignation 09/10/2009 of Matthew P. Hoh, Senior Civilian Representative, Zabul Province, Afghanistan and the tremendous ripple-effect his action has caused all the way to DC.
Matthew is not just some desk-jockey. He was a Marine Captain who served two hitches in the current war in Iraq. He knows war. He writes from experience, IMO the most valuable kind of education and learning. Matthew’s resignation letter may be the most honest intelligence estimate we are likely to ever get about the true conditions in Afghanistan and the effects of our military occupation.
In his 4-page letter letter of resignation (pdf) linked in the C&L piece, his dedication, sincerity, and inner struggles clearly come through. As I read it, I wondered for just how many of our war-weary young soldiers is he speaking?
Here is an excerpt from www.crooksandliars.com I recommend reading the full article and most of all, Matthew’s letter.
(I)n a move that has sent ripples all the way to the White House, (former Marine Corps Captain Matthew) Hoh, 36, became the first U.S. official known to resign in protest over the Afghan war, which he had come to believe simply fueled the insurgency.
“I have lost understanding of and confidence in the strategic purposes of the United States’ presence in Afghanistan,” he wrote Sept. 10 in a four-page letter to the department’s head of personnel. “I have doubts and reservations about our current strategy and planned future strategy, but my resignation is based not upon how we are pursuing this war, but why and to what end.”
I wish you safe home, Matthew P. Hoh, and thank you for your service and true dedication to honorable action, even when the costs to you are so high.

I did not see Jim Moss’s diary on this same subject until after I had posted mine. In fact, his diary still is not in the Diary Listing. I commented at his diary and explained. I truly do not understand the set-up here.
From today’s WaPo which broke this story:
Matthew Hoh is SETTING THE PACE! If you want our troops re-deployed, then go to your congress critters’ offices and POUND ON THE TABLE for it.
HoundDog, sadly my Repub congress-critters have no ears to hear anyone except their campaign contributors (handlers).
Thanks for the reply, aquarius, and I know what you mean. My idiot congressman is – gasp – John Shimkus, but I’ve been in his office twice and confronted him to his face with this horseshit. the last time I was there, he got so rattled and angry that he got glassy-eyed, and I calmly told him he was raising his voice.
But, I have Dick Durbin, too, and I don’t leave him alone about these damned wars that he is funding, which only buys more boards and nails to crucify our troops. GOD BLESS Matthew Hoh. Thank you for bringing his story out for more to see. I will post a diary about this all across the political blogosphere tomorrow.
SADLY out of about three hundred and seven million people only a few were smart enough to question our being in Afghanistan, after we let Bin Laden go.
My stomack rolls, everytime one of those Republicans says we have to keep AlQeada from coming back, and having a country to use to plot against us.
What the fuck do they think they have with Pakistan.
We are I guess blessed to have the most ignorant people on the face of the earth here, and for them to be in the Republican party
The saddest thing is the people who without thought believe what they say.
It like their favorite saying, “we have to fight them there so we don’t have to fight them here.” At first it almost makes sense, unless one thinks about what they said. That means just because we are fighting them there, that none of them can come over here.
What the hell do the Republicans do put super glue on their feet so they can only go where our troops are.
There is not one good reason for being in Afghanistan. Except that our military messed that one up so bad, they had to stay to fabricate an excuse so no one noticed their failure.
And thanks for your reply, HoundDog. Paste it everywhere. I’m sure Matthew knew he would face all kinds of dust-ups about his letter and took that into consideration. Not too many these days will give up a the paycheck for their principles. May he have a long and full life.
I think most of all our “leaders” (/s) are ignorant about real war. Really now, what could Obama know of real war? Zero! Being an old woman, I don’t either, but my Dad was in WWI and I know of some of the consequences of war. And that last sorry administration, the warmongers who dodged service one way or another, and others too young to have experienced it.
We had no business going into Afghanistan. Those troops and tanks, etc.. were in position ready to go in before 9/11 and in the summer the plans were all set for attack in the fall before the snows came. (So they could get on with laying that UNICOL pipeline) Think maybe that might have had something to do with 9/11? That is if there is any truth to the Bin Ladin BS at all.
Here at rawstory is a report that so far this month 53 US soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan, 51 were killed in August (no Sept. total given) and manages to get in the reminder that Osama Bin Ladin attacked NY City on 9/11.
Oh really..he did?..somebody better tell the FBI then..’g’. Can somebody, anybody, get this man to STFU?

“All negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program have failed and the option now is for Israel to launch a preemptive strike against the Islamic Republic, former US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton told RT. ”

Can I just say John Brady Kiesling? It gave me such heart in 2003 when I heard his resignation letter to Secretary of State Colin Powell read on NPR.
thanks acquarius. want to read his full letter. courage is contagious. gonna repeat here some statistics I put in a diary a while back re Iraq and Afghan. and the status of US soldiers:
“What You Didn’t Know About The War” (10:42)
This video is mandatory viewing to all supporters of the war(s). Narration used in the video is DAHLIA WASFI.

Wonderful comment, thatvisionthing ! Please don’t bury it here in comments only, but make a diary of it.
IMO, he would be a wonderful Secretary of State. Soon as I respond to other comments I’ll search to learn more about him. Thank you, thatvisionthing. (I like your name).
Hoh’s letter is very good. Just after his statement that his problem is not with the “how” of our efforts there but with the “why”, he goes on to point out that by supporting the Karzai government, the US is taking sides in what is a 35 year old civil war. To me, that means the war was going on before we got there, continues despite our presence and will resume after we leave.
So let’s get on with it and leave.
Libby, I missed that diary. How about updating it and posting it again. Now is the time to make big noise about ending this insanity before it’s too late. I really think Obama is just playing with us, but it’s worth a try to rouse up everybody in America who still has a brain cell working and a drop of warm blood in their body. Thanks, Libby!
“The United Nations drug and crime tsar today called for intensified efforts to combat the devastating global impact of Afghanistan’s multi-billion dollar opium trade, fuelling addiction, the spread of HIV, a rise in criminal activity, as well as insurgencies and terrorism.
Afghanistan produces almost all the world’s opium – the raw material for heroin – which has a $65 billion global market catering to 15 million addicts, causing up to 100,000 deaths per year, spreading HIV at an unprecedented rate, and funding the Taliban and Al-Qaida, according to a new UN Offices on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) report.
Mr. Costa said that many of the drug barons, with links to insurgency, are known to Afghan and foreign intelligence services. “Why have their names not been submitted to the UN Security Council… in order to ban their travel and seize their assets?” ”

Thank you, Jim. Your postings are always right to the core of the matter. I’ll repeat to you what I said to thatvisionthing @13 and Libby @ 15: Use that one gem as the basis for a powerful diary, Jim. You have a wide readership, please waste no time, Jim. That window of Obama’s indecision may not be open very long.
Thanks, Jim. scout

blue, one reason is that if the drug business was severely inhibited some of the biggest banks on Wall Street would go bust. Remember the charts and talks and sections of his book (Crossing the Rubicon) that Michael C. Ruppert laid out the connection to the drug market and the WS banks?
BTW, yesterday I read that in one of those helicopter crashes 7 soldiers died and some narcotics agents. Now, there’s more than one way to interpret that term. hmmmm, think about that.
What in the Hell is this??? If we can’t arrest John Bolton, spit on him!!!!
My deepest appreciation and thanks to the anonymous person who recommended this diary; now it’s in the center box and will be on the list at FDL’s page. It’s the message I’m promoting in this diary, not myself.
Yes..and they just found a plane that went down two weeks ago in Afghanistan. Three dead contractors working counter-narco terrorism operations. Already jumped to the obvious conclusion, I did.

hahaha..Bolton is a scourge on humanity. If you can stomach it, the video of him speaking is at the site. Two parts..Wilkerson on ‘Military Industrial Congressional Complex’. I won’t ruin the surprise by explaining that title.

Makes me less than comfortable to know that North is privy to knowledge about the DEA agents in Afghanistan.

Bolton is going to freak..’g’. Interesting article; they don’t mention that Israel bombed Saddam’s nuclear facility. That fact I found in Margaret Thatcher’s papers.
********
“Iraq has started lobbying for approval to again become a nuclear player, almost 19 years after British and American war planes destroyed Saddam Hussein’s last two reactors, the Guardian has learned.
The Iraqi government has approached the French nuclear industry about rebuilding at least one of the reactors that was bombed at the start of the first Gulf war. The government has also contacted the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and United Nations to seek ways around resolutions that ban Iraq’s re-entry into the nuclear field.
Iraq says it envisages that a reactor would be used initially for research purposes. “We are co-operating with the IAEA and expanding and defining areas of research where we can implement nuclear technology for peaceful means,” the science and technology minister, Raid Fahmi, told the Guardian.”

blue, I think that article was picked up from a 10/15/2009 piece in HUFFPO.
IMO, anything John Bolton trumpets hurts Israel by turning readers against the Zionists and gaining sympathy for Iran’s difficult position.
By nature I’m not a mean person, but it would be a blessing to the world if that creature lost the capacities of speech and writing.
Haven’t gone to the link yet, blue, but North knowing about the Narco activities in Afghan is what I meant by the words “narcotics agents” having more meanings than one. He, Barry Seals and Ted Shackley made big bucks in the Air America era and Iran Contra. Is it time for the buyers to contract for the poppy crops in Afghan? Big harvest this year?
Lookee here, blue!!! We’uns did it again. With info like this from folks like Col Wilkerson, we’ll beat that “secret government” yet! Keep those links coming!
[pssst: if you click the recommend button this diary gets in the 'box' and is listed on the FDL page. It's the message I promote, not myself.]
I’ve bookmarked this video, blue. Will do a diary later; need to let folks meditate on Col. Wilkerson’s speech for a while. As always, thanks.
Ask him about our use of uranium in munitions.
We will never no the truth about Bin Laden. If He really was there or not. Even the piple line can’t answer why we have been there for eight years.
We have had enough troops there to allow them to build ten pipe lines, and they seem not to be in the areas where the pipe line goes.
The people have not loudly asked what the hell are we doing there?
“We will never no the truth about Bin Laden.”
“EDMONDS: Okay. So these conversations, between 1997 and 2001, had to do with a Central Asia operation that involved bin Laden. Not once did anybody use the word “al-Qaeda.” It was always “mujahideen,” always “bin Laden” and, in fact, not “bin Laden” but “bin Ladens” plural. There were several bin Ladens who were going on private jets to Azerbaijan and Tajikistan. The Turkish ambassador in Azerbaijan worked with them.
There were bin Ladens, with the help of Pakistanis or Saudis, under our management. Marc Grossman was leading it, 100 percent, bringing people from East Turkestan into Kyrgyzstan, from Kyrgyzstan to Azerbaijan, from Azerbaijan some of them were being channeled to Chechnya, some of them were being channeled to Bosnia. From Turkey, they were putting all these bin Ladens on NATO planes. People and weapons went one way, drugs came back.
GIRALDI: Was the U.S. government aware of this circular deal?
EDMONDS: 100 percent. A lot of the drugs were going to Belgium with NATO planes. After that, they went to the UK, and a lot came to the U.S. via military planes to distribution centers in Chicago and Paterson, New Jersey. Turkish diplomats who would never be searched were coming with suitcases of heroin.”

iremember54, my opinions about that are too ugly and gruesome to share.
Ah go on share. Were big guys we can take it. You know the fact we don’t speak our minds is why these things continue.
I don’t want to go on and on about this but this guy is no hero. He’s a pychopath. I mean he says,
When will the peace movement quit boosting psychopathic killers and other military types as if they were Gandhi? I don’t know what motivates this guy but I think we can safely rule out the milk of human kindness.
Thank you, BillWalker. Just like the old Air America and Iran-Contra days, huh? Maybe on a bigger scale.
9/11 was pretty large scale, yes:/
Multi-trillion dollar wars and destruction of our Constitutional liberties are pretty large scale events based on that domestic terrorist attack.
“what the hell are we doing there?
iremember54, my opinions about that are too ugly and gruesome to share.”
I was banned from TPMCafe for linking to evidence of Jewish associates of Cheney being involved in the 9/11 plot.
As far as what we the hell we are doing in Afghanistan and Iraq, I don’t think we should discount these countries strategic proximity to Iran, which our dearest Mid-Eastern ally and our Neocon defense establishment want desperately to invade and overthrow.
Maybe Rahm’s former employer, the IDF, influenced Rahm when he ran herd on liberal Dems in Congress this spring to re-up our Iraq occupation, threatening that they would “never hear from (the White House) again” if they didn’t vote for more occupation in Iraq.
slowly but surely time is melting away the film of panic, and reason is re-emerging among an ever-growing number of people.
I won’t go into detail, it has to do with all the food and water on this planet presumed by the elite to rightfully belong to them. You’ve heard/read Kissinger, David Rockefeller, Brzenski’s statements about our soldiers, the useless eaters, and the vassals… that’s what the wars are all about. {In addition to fattening their purses in the process, of course.]

Quotes from Bresinski’s 90′s book, “The Grand Chessboard”
“It is imperative that no Eurasian challenger emerges capable of dominating Eurasia and thus of also challenging America. The formulation of a comprehensive and integrated Eurasian geostrategy is therefore the purpose of this book.”
“Moreover, as America becomes an increasingly multi-cultural society, it may find it more difficult to fashion a consensus on foreign policy issues, except in the circumstance of a truly massive and widely perceived direct external threat.” (p. 211)

I have told my President, my Senators (one Democrat and one appointed Republican stand-in) and my Congressman (Republican)I want us out of Afghanistan. Again, it appears no one will define “winning” this occupation. Our action is not a war and never has been; it is not a country and never will be because it is ungovernable. It is an Allahforsaken, cobbled together entity of the British Empire and we should declare we have won and begin action against Al Qaeda where we find them.
Thank you for all your efforts, TEHelms.
Surgical removal would have been the intelligent way to go about finding and eliminating the alleged 9/11 attackers to begin with instead of brutally punishing everyone in the entire country of Afghanistan. Bush/Cheney/Rummy were not heavy with intelligence…and the whole world is paying the price for those stolen elections.
[IMHO it was never really OBL they wanted anyway, but they could sell him to the sheeple.]
Exactly, that would be National Security Study Memorandum (NSSM) 200 or The Kissinger Report

The power of the pen/words from those who know. Those who serve.
Amazing to think that only 2% of the money that the U.S. is spending in Afghanistan makes it to the people of Afghanistan. Many of those warlords are making out.
Everyone should watch the documentary CONVOY OF DEATH. If you wonder why the Taliban may be even more pissed off or fired up against the U.S. When close to 3000 of them surrender to Afghani warlords and allegedly U.S. forces and 2000 of them are allowed to be brutally suffocated in the back of semi’s as they are being transported who needs to wonder how this fueled their anger. Christ can you imagine how this made them want to fight against our occupation even more.
Go watch the CONVOY OF DEATH on line. Amy Goodman covered this massacre. Not a whisper out of Rachel, (she did not have her spot at MSNBC then…but still one would think she might mention how there has not been any accountability in this case) Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann.
But what the hell not a whisper out of Rachel, Matthews, Keith about the UN Goldstone Report. Did I miss it or has our MSM asking any questions about why not one damn person has been held accountable for the false pre war intelligence? The Niger Documents?
Hey you “move on, turn the page, do not be about retribution, vengeance, look forward, next chapeter please” This is the horseshit we have heard in regard to accountability for very serious crimes
a drug cartel with dreams of a world empire?
drug cartel = pharmaceutical co’s
Oh groan….why hasn’t Kissinger been behind bars since at least 1974? My opinions have been drawn from wide readings; I had never seen this document. It explains why I hate hidden meanings so much. It is so important here is the copy given at your link:
[needless to say, war is a great means of population control; by immediate death by bombing and wounding as well as slow death from radiation due to depleted uranium artillery and bombs and contamination of soil and water.] r
[1974 and 1975: Cambodia - Nixon/Kissinger = carpet bombing then deserted the Cambodians to the Kymer Rouge = the killing fields]
I agree, Leen, thank you. IMO, Pelosi is a traitor for not impeaching cheney first then Bush. She put more importance in winning the 2006 election than the constitution. She denied her oath of office by taking impeachment off the table. She’s still there, so there won’t be any strong push from the House for accountability for treason or war crimes. [IMHO].
I was going to go to the source and give a link to the report, but it’s 123 pages. If anyone’s up to it, here it is
http://www.scribd.com/doc/7423676/NSSM-200-Kissinger-Genocide-Report-1974
And the link I found gave a short summary of it. This one’s more detailed but it’s still 35 pages
http://www.scribd.com/doc/10059513/Nssm-200Kissinger-Report
But essentially what it comes down to is authorizing programs to limit population growth in those countries so that the natural resources in those countries could be exploited by the US corporate interests instead of the native populations
Studies show population growth comes down anyway if you raise the standard of living by spending money on economic development and humanitarian aid. But they didn’t want to concentrate on that because if they’re too busy just staying alive they won’t recognize that their country is being used and exploited.
And we couldn’t have that
DU..the 3.5 billion year population control plan.
********
“This final part of the deceit story will prove for the first time that weapons containing uranium components are used in Afghanistan despite US and NATO denial.
US F-15E loaded with potential DU weapons
We saw this same denial in the Balkans, Kuwait and Iraq. Eventually hard evidence revealed the truth and the military backed down. A massive PR exercise is then launched to play down its usage. Independent experts have since carried out test in Afghanistan and revealed the excessive use of weapons containing uranium components at a much greater level than used in Iraq.
Secondary contamination is a major problem in Afghanistan not only from the natural weather conditions but also from the constant military activity by aircraft and helicopters.
DU has been used extensively in this war and those countries downwind of Afghanistan, such as Pakistan, India and China etc will reap in the harvest.
Yes, John, and a starving people are listless and too weak to resist or fight. What makes a mind so evil as Kissinger’s and Nixon’s? And Obama appointed him his ‘special advisor’. Wonder what his advice on the big upcoming decision has been? Death numbers high enough yet, Henry?
Got your point. Hope it got some off your chest. Their are alot of us wih you.
Thanks for letting me know, iremember54. Told ya it was gruesome.
Now there’s something else eating at me. You know that big decision Obama has hanging over all our heads, especially the soldiers in Afghanistan? Well, yesterday evening he attended a big fund-raiser in NY City, mostly attended by Wall Street banksters and others related to that. Take a look here.
More searching revealed that he has been traveling all over the country doing fund-raisers since sometime in May. I think the number is around 21 or 23 now. He’s only been in office 10 months and doing fund-raising??? The shape this country is in he needs to be knuckled down tending to business. He does not get my vote next time around…I’m sure that will really upset him. (/s)
I’m too angry to do a diary about this, so have asked scarecrow to do one.
John, just in case you drop back in: Have you read the book, Final Judgment by Michael Collins Piper, pub 1993, publisher: The Center For Historical Review ??
