For over a year now, a number of voices, liberal and conservative, have been arguing that the United States should not send more troops to Afghanistan. One of the most important voices in the antiwar movement is Derrick Crowe, an activist and blogger based in Austin, Texas.
In August, my colleague Jason Rosenbaum and I joined with Robert Greenwald’s Brave New Foundation to support Derrick’s work with a special blog fellowship. We believe the debate on Afghanistan is so important that we paid Derrick a stipend out of our blog‘s own income, something we had never done before. You have likely seen some of Derrick’s writing here, where he is a frequent contributor.
Derrick’s hard work has more than repaid our investment – he has been interviewed on Al Jazeera English and Japanese public television, and his blogging has drawn links from around the internet, including the New York Times. We believe he has played a substantial role in shifting public opinion on the war, which in turn has brought about a potentially game-changing debate within the Obama administration regarding US strategy in Afghanistan.
Now CREDO Mobile has made us an incredibly generous offer: for every signature we obtain for the petition linked below, they will donate $1 (up to $5,000) to support Derrick’s fellowship. This amount would allow him to continue with the part-time fellowship for another year, during which time we believe he can have an even greater impact on the debate around Afghanistan.

I do not normally put a lot of energy into promoting petitions, but in this case I believe that with one simple action you can have a double impact.
First, by signing the petition, which asks President Obama not to send more troops to Afghanistan, you will be signaling to the President that a large constituency of Americans will oppose an open-ended escalation of a long-running conflict. At this critical moment, when the President is considering just such an escalation, the antiwar side needs all the public backing it can get.
Second, and at no cost to yourself, you will be helping to support an important antiwar voice – and helping to show the support that Americans will offer to independent media outlets that make a difference. All that is required on your part is signing up for CREDO’s email list, which will let you know about other activism opportunities they have.
Thanks for reading this far, and I hope you’ll sign the petition.

Finally, please forward this post to any contacts you have who might be willing to sign. I do not believe it will be difficult to hit 5,000, but we can use all the help we can get!

this is great–just signed and forwarded, and very glad Credo is providing this support
Just to give folks an update, because of help from FDL readers (as well as a bunch of other blogs who chipped in), we’ve raised over $1,000 towards Derrick’s fellowship so far. Now, CREDO is helping us get the rest we need.
So please sign and forward to a few friends. It only takes a few minutes and it really makes a difference.
I signed up! C’mon everyone, all the cool bloggers and blog readers and commentators are doing it! Don’t you want to be cool too?
Thank you, Alex. I’ve signed. I’m also a customer of CredoMobil and will add Derrick Crowe’s name to my list of those I wish to receive contributions from Credo.
I signed up, encourage you out there to do the same.
Jason, I found no “recommend” button here, also may I suggest that this diary as well as the interview with Matthew Hoh be added to the diary listing and the recommended box. I usually just go to the listings; just happened to catch Derrick’s diary yesterday. I see plenty of empty space at the right to extend the diary listings.
Done.
But all the other kids told me I’d never be cool…
You can’t recommend posts that are on the front page, but I might throw a copy of this in the diaries, too, so folks can recommend.
Thank you for your response, Jason; been wondering about that for a long time.
signed, hope Derrick is able to continue.
I signed on, too! Thanks…
Signed and forwarded.
OT: some stupid birther douchebag on the ED show, claiming that president Obama wants to wage jihad on the United States.
Could someone, somewhere, in a position of authority at the various networks, please stop giving these assholes a platform?
Too many stupid birther douchebags, too little networks with a conscience.
Hey.
And, ps, if I had any mf’ing control anywhere, things might look a little, tiny bit different.
And, ps, if I had any mf’ing control anywhere, things might look a little, tiny bit different.
in that case, I hereby appoint you as the head of ABC, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, and CBS “news”.
Umm – who do we notify?
Have signed. Thanks for info.
As for Ed. You could tell he was not happy with this dipshit. Ed just showed a hellava lot of people a real dirtbag in a free society. Would you buy a used car from this ignorant person? Nuff said.
Ah, ha! I worked at NBC, but it was really looooong time ago. It’s changed a lot since then, so I wouldn’t know who you should contact.
Funny, I just unsuscribed to CREDO, and a few other similar orgs because all I got were solicitations for my money or to buy a mobile phone package from them.
They don’t get my sig OR my money.
I urge Crowe supporters to send your money to him directly and cut out the middle man.
Signed. Thanks, Derrick!
