Should I run now?
We have been systematically lied to by own “democratic governments.” As a matter of fact we have ALWAYS been systematically lied to by our “democratic governments.” The reason is simple: They do not now, and never have, represented their people. They represent the ambitions of the wealthy and their corporations. They work for profit and they lie to protect their interests.
The clusterfuck that is the nuclear industry, in every country, is a horrifying example of this. We ask for assurances, for the truth. However, the politicians, government regulators and other revolving door corporate marionettes control the dialogue (and I use “dialogue” tongue-in-cheek.) They speak only condescension, silence, and lies. Don’t worry, they say. There is no danger. You are being an alarmist. All those people died of cancer, NOT radiation. Building ( tax-payer-funded-welfare-for-the-rich-subsidized) nuclear plants creates jobs. Nuclear plants are green. We have done the required maintenance. There are no natural disasters that could harm the plant. All lies.
We are talking about a danger to the very existence of life on this planet as we know it. This is no small fucking thing. Can you even really imagine it? And these assholes lie to us. Seriously? WTF.
Don’t believe it?
Read some of this:

And Now For Something Completely Different…
Local Official: Japan gov’t did not reveal plutonium-241 detection

Local Official: They found plutonium in every sample — Radiation-absorbing bacterium is everywhere on paved surfaces

Before Fukushima: 100 Bq/kg of cesium is nuclear waste — After: 100 Bq/kg of cesium is safe to eat
And last but certainly not least- If you were one of those “radiation is good for you nuke industry shills/ trolls”, this should set you straight:
“It is not really reported that strontium is so dangerous that it used to be used for chemical weapons of the Nazis.
http://enenews.com/local-official-really-reported-strontium-dangerous-be-chemical-weapons-nazis-video
Yes, THOSE Nazis. So there, if the Nazi’s used it, you know it’s got to be bad.
Update 6 June 12
The lies are starting to unravel.
“It’s emerged that at the height of Japan’s nuclear crisis last March, the authorities in Fukushima concealed radiation data vital to safely evacuate people from that area.”
http://fukushimaupdate.com/escobar-on-fukushima-email-leak-deleting-data-a-cover-up/
Nuclear agency, TEPCO, knew in 2006 tsunami could trigger power loss
“The government’s nuclear safety agency and Tokyo Electric Power Co. had acknowledged as of 2006 the risk of a tsunami-triggered power loss at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, agency officials said Tuesday.
According to the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency’s officials, the awareness was shared at a study session that was launched in response to the 2004 Sumatra quake and tsunami in Indonesia and joined by several utilities.”

And again we ask, what did they know and when did they know it? This is so typical. I would not be shocked if some bean-counter (accountant) over-ruled an engineer, and emphatically declared that the capital required to harden existing facilities was better spent on PR. Or on the CEO’s bonus.
Scientists tested 15 blue fin tuna in California for Fukushima nuclear contamination. And they find ALL 15 are contaminated. (But the levels are “safe”, according to the US Government. Hahahaha. Safe like cigarettes? or DDT? or agent orange? or Aspartame? Yeah. I’ll buy that for a dollar. When the FDA speaks about food safety, the truth is usually bypassed, in proportion to the perceived threat to corporate profit.)

Nektar 1975. Still seems relevent.

And thanks Wendy for helping me with images on another, now abandoned post.
Welcome, AT. Not time enough to comment on your post just now; spent too much time hunting for a link on washingtonsblog.com about a study on low-level radiation being more harmful than high level. Didn’t actually read it, so I’m ignorant as ever about it. I couldn’t kick it up in the google cache, either; sorry.
But rats; I’d hoped you might have come on to my yesterday post, share some permaculture wisdom. Another time, maybe. ;o)
All my best,
wd
Good to see that the horrors of Fukushima lately has been diaried.
Here are a couple links from today to add:

Spent Fuel Pool at #4 loses cooling pumps, is warming.
http://enenews.com/kyodo-no-4-fuel-pool-warms-backup-pump-stopped-wednesday-main-pump-stopped-tuesday-tepco-expects-temperature-to-start-falling
waking up from the ignorant nightmare isn’t easy. watching as plutonium / strontium / cesium is dumped into our air and oceans isn’t easy either…..
the first step to all change and evolution is consciousness. bringing consciousness to the light or vice versa will always help. even if our actions seem small, we still make a difference, the ocean is made of rain drops….
find your compassion, and keep a warm heart…..we are expanding at a heavy rate these days.
there are cures for radiation / cancer etc. hopefully we will be able to apply this to our environment as well.
cheers to conscious change, through action and dreams.
one love.
…X 2
They better get those pumps working again in #4 because that’s the worrisome one with the precariously perched cooling pool open to the sky and packed with almost 2 thousand spent fuel rods that will pollute the atmosphere with radioactivity almost forever . . .
Yikes!
Another case of just because we CAN do it……never should have been done inn the first place.
How little humility we, as a species have to actually split the basics of matter and now messing with DNA, the very code of Life.
We just aren’t THAT smart and we’re ALL going to pay for our hubris
I agree. I wonder if they teach ethics to science majors?
Thank you for these links. This cannot be good.
Science majors don’t make that decision, the MBAs do.
Ethics for them? Don’t make me laugh. The only ethic they have is maximize profit. All else is irrelevant.
And ya, like all professions, the science guys went along or said nothing. Their paycheck was on the line. No innocents here.
Wendy, note that the radioactivity is concomitant with the nuclear poisons– Cesium-137 and other radionuclides– which didn’t even exist on the planet until crazies like Teller started goofing around split the atom. You can get correct and accurate general medical and environmental information about radionuclides at Physicians for Social Responsibility and The Helen Caldicott Foundation website, Nuclear Free Planet. Caldicott and her team (one’s a nuclear engineer) are tracking more detailed information about what’s happening and she is on Twitter at @DrHCaldicott. What I am seeing and hearing from the Japanese directly is that there is a huge news blackout on the patterns (e.g. medical data on who is dying and how) and rates of cancer, cancer-related illnesses (e.g. leukemia) and death. The ongoing environmental contamination is showing up increasingly on the Canadian and US West Coast all the way to Alaska. Now Japan is burning radioactive debris which circulates the radioactivity in the atmosphere. Further there’s a relatively recent appearance of a “Tea Party” with a connection to CPAC that is being pushed in Tokyo and which doesn’t look like anything “organic” to the Japanese. Many Japanese are openly critical of it in addition to accusations that the US government (Pentagon) and wealthy backers of the US Tea Party (the “nuclear bankers“) are involved in dictating policy to the Japanese government to override the will of the Japanese people. Right now the Japanese government is literally attempting to force the population to go back to business as usual in the midst of the unresolved, ongoing nuclear disaster inclusive of failed and laughably obvious propaganda campaigns. “Fukushima Diaries” an informative but heart-breaking daily read produced by a civil engineer also writing as @Angama_Market tells what life is like in Japan these days. You can also follow the hashtag, #Genpatsu.
P.S. J. Aravosis’ April post about the Tea Party in Japan simply misrepresents Buddhists as he has clearly not researched the topic well enough to know that actual practitioners oppose war and nuclear anything for the same reasons Caldicott does as she so eloquently presents in her 1982 film, If You Love This Planet.
There was no alternative … God gave us the atom to defeat fascism.
A few in the thick of it saw the game as it was unreeling.
