In the United States during the 1930s, revolution was in the air. With the stock market crash and the ensuing Great Depression, the broken economy was failing most Americans. This gave rise to a spectrum of responses, providing communists and socialists on the left and fascists on the right with a compelling argument that capitalism and democracy were fundamentally flawed. With millions unemployed and living in poverty, people were primed for change.
But in the United States, the revolution never came. Capitalism survived the 1930s. So did democracy.
Instead, the calls for social change compelled President Franklin Roosevelt and the U.S. Congress to pass sweeping reforms, while the Supreme Court provided the new laws with a constitutional seal of approval. Today, the reforms of the New Deal remain vital to America’s compact with its citizens: part safety net, part ladder of opportunity.
Since 2008, economic conditions have sparked new movements for change. Organizers behind the Tea Party conservatives, the Ron Paul libertarians and isolationists, and Occupy Wall Street’s anti-corporatists all believe another world is possible. The messages are simple and clear. “End the Fed” the libertarians proclaim. “Tax the Rich” the occupiers chant. “Seal the border” the tea partiers insist.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, Jews were attracted to revolutionary, utopian movements like socialism and communism. Anti-Semitism made life hard for Jews, and the idea that we could create a more just society in which Jews and other embattled communities would be accepted as equals was very appealing.
Eventually, though, utopianism lost its luster for most American Jews. The revolutions of the 20th century often turned out to be more dangerous than the flawed societies they replaced. Both Stalin and Hitler inspired followers with their visions of utopia. Reform, not revolution, became the norm for American Jews.
Today, iin economic and soical conditions reminiscent of the 1930s, Occupy Wall Street (OWS) is generating considerable excitement and some nervousness among American Jews. On the one hand, its critique of economic inequality and of a political system that excludes most voices from civic discourse resonates with the community’s liberal majority. On the other hand, Jews have often been scapegoated during economic crises, accused of being puppet masters behind the scenes.
So, what’s a Jew to do?
We can take a lesson from the 1930s, and advance an aggressive reform agenda that addresses the critique of structural inequality put forward by Occupy Wall Street.
Here’s how The New York Times described it.
[I]income inequality is grinding down [the] middle class, increasing the ranks of the poor, and threatening to create a permanent underclass of able, willing but jobless people… [T]he financial sector, with regulators and elected officials in collusion, inflated and profited from a credit bubble that burst, costing millions of Americans their jobs, incomes, savings and home equity. … [E]lected officials’ hunger for campaign cash from Wall Street… has reaffirmed the economic and political power of banks and bankers, while ordinary Americans suffer… [The] dysfunctional economy [is] dominated by a financial sector that is driven as much by speculation, gouging and government backing as by productive investment.
If we agree with this assessment, we should be sympathetic to the voices of Occupy Wall Street. Now is the time to redouble our efforts to create a more just society. The potential strategies are limitless. In Boston, for example, the Stabilizing Urban Neighborhoods (SUN) initiative has prevented more than 125 homeowners from being evicted by helping them repurchase their homes with affordable fixed-rate mortgages.
Occupy Wall Street is many things. It is an opportunity for regular people to share their frustrations with an economic system that no longer works for them. It is a mechanism for mobilizing individuals to collectively confront powerful interests. And Occupy Wall Street is a new town square where democracy is practiced and the First Amendment comes alive.
There is a reason why a majority of Americans have a favorable opinion of Occupy Wall Street. You don’t have to be an occupier to share their frustration. Finally, a populist movement even a reformer can love.

“There is a reason why a majority of Americans have a favorable opinion of Occupy Wall Street.”
Did you mean to write “unfavorable”?
Just what does Occupy Wall Street have to do with Jews in general or Judaism in particular? They’re about class warfare being waged by the top 1% against the rest of us, quite successfully, I might add.
What’s a Jew to do? What the hell are you talking about? Or are you towing the capitalist propaganda line attempting to equate OWS with anti-Semitism? Whoops, guess I meant anti-Judaism, since Arabs are Semites, but I digress.
Well? Answer my questions or don’t. If you don’t, that’s an answer, too. I may sign off tonight, so I may get back to you on Wednesday.
On the other hand, Jews have often been scapegoated during economic crises, accused of being puppet masters behind the scenes.
There’s no evidence of that happening now within the OWS movement…!
What’s a Jew to do…? Join it…!
What the hell are you talking about? The author discusses the historical desire of American Jews to “create a more just society,” specifically says that the OWS’s critiques “resonate with the community’s liberal majority,” and advocates the advancement of “an aggressive reform agenda that addresses the critique of structural inequality put forward by Occupy Wall Street.”
What more could you ask for?
She makes passing mention that Jews have historical concerns about being “scapegoated during economic crises” and you immediately dismiss all her highly supportive statements about OWS and accuse her of toeing (not towing, btw) the capitalist propaganda line?
Take a chill pill, dude.
The title of the diary is not “in passing.” Asking what a Jew should do implies that Jews are somehow different from everybody else.
They’re not. Not in the context of OWS and what caused it. At least, I don’t see it. What I see is an attempt to separate people from their class interests along religious or ethnic lines. Maybe the diarist did not mean that. I don’t know. I request clarification.
“Eventually, though, utopianism lost its luster for most American Jews. The revolutions of the 20th century often turned out to be more dangerous than the flawed societies they replaced. Both Stalin and Hitler inspired followers with their visions of utopia. Reform, not revolution, became the norm for American Jews.”
I’m not really sure what basis there is to say that “utopianism lost its luster for most American Jews.” First, let me ask whether the premise is that Jews, in this context, are any different from the rest of American society. Is the argument that Jews turned away from utopianism because of Stalin and Hitler? Are you suggesting that because two tyrants betrayed utopian ideals, that idealism itself shouldn’t be trusted? Isn’t that kind of throwing the baby out with the bath water? I just don’t see a logical basis or adequate documentation for the premise that Jews have turned away from utopianism.
Having said that, I’d like to talk a little about utopianism and ask how any rational person can oppose it. Truthfully, when I hear people call others “idealists”, as if that’s a bad thing, I really don’t understand where they’re coming from.
It seems to me we all have certain values and beliefs… let’s call them our ideals or our utopia. Are we naive to believe in these things? Isn’t that what society and good governance should strive for? Does utopianism necessitate unreasonableness, political immaturity or a lack of pragmatism? I don’t see why. Of course you have to be patient. Of course you have to compromise with others who have different values than you have. Of course you can’t let everything just go to hell while you cling to your beliefs.
Utopianism is the goal. It may even be an unachievable goal but is it any less valuable to advocate for your beliefs and to fight to bring them about? Again, I don’t see why.
It seems to me all policy should start with a clear enumeration of our fundamental values. What, exactly, do we believe in? What is right and what is wrong? What is important and what is not important? Start there and then develop policies and strategies and laws that give voice to our deeply held beliefs. It’s really sad, even on left-leaning websites, to see so much emphasis on policies and so little emphasis on values.
It’s time for America’s idealists to take charge and push the nay-saying “you can’t do thats” to the sidelines.
Amy, please take a gander at Jello Biafra’s Thoughts On Visit To Israel…
The Diaspora needs to address the blatant Apartheid head on…! 8-(
I dunna, I’m not a Jew but I get the diary and its intent.
It ain’t rocket science IMHO.
Rcc’d, cuz life is simple and so is the diary.
C’mon folks . . . a little prickly feeling are yas FireBaggers?
You want a REAL controversy, go read Jello Biafra’s account of his visit to Israel . . . THAT’S rocket science, at its best.
So you folks don’t have to look it up.
Dewd…! Ya owe me a frothy one…!
You lie like a rug.
I’ve got many Jewish friends involved in OWS outside of Alaska. They are as deeply involved in this movement as they are in other concerns they support. I made a new Jewish friend at Occupy Anchorage last Saturday. She has recently moved to Alaska, and was drawn to the event, looking for people who think like she does. She found some.
Many of us involved in Occupy Anchorage and other OIWS-related things happening in Alaska are also involved in the struggle for Palestinian rights, and getting the word out about that here. So far, we don’t even talk about I/P in the context of the Occupy movement, past the obvious linkage between protests here and elsewhere, where people are getting screwed.
Today, with the temperatures dipping into the teens and the wind blowing 35 in Anchorage, the occupiers are getting ready for winter – fulltime.
The meme that there is some sort of bias against Jews in OWS is total fucking bullshit.
Welcome, Amy.
Randall, prove it otherwise…! You’re a well known hasbara agent in these here parts…!
utopianism is always totalitarianism to someone else. It’s generally paternal and negates choice and self determination.
The best we can do is to balance negative freedom with positive freedom for everyone and limit the power of the government.
ewww.
What’s a Jew to do? Teach us how to organize, commie.
A dinstinction, first.
1930: the ultra wealthy ran out of middle class to which to lend
and so leaned on pushing excessive debt onto persons unqualified
for the amounts they were borrowing.
today’s case: same; but, they could insure it and go short against it
The present Administration and the GOP together have signed you and me
off on responsibility for far more notional debt taken on by Too Big To
Fail ultra smug bankers (from many such banks, smug types of all stripes)
as well as onto assuming responsibility for any legal culpability on their
part. But for the latter part, the former could otherwise actually,
by way of a government not controlled by scapegoating and arrogance, be
potentially substantially voided (but seek your own legal advice on that.)
Bag men and front men, traceable to persons running “teflon” though
subject to suspicion for their own possibilities of having run afoul
of the law, are all imminently trashing the safety nets that Adam
Smith himself, though much slandered, actually advocated expressly
because he thought corporations were singularly best left alone for
only their specific expertises. What is being preserved is a nation
held hostage to a rape and policy by “transference.” Billionaires
forcing themselves on us. Insisting on a culture of jailtime instead of
education, insisting on dirty food, air, water, lavish tax
cuts for the ultra wealthy borrowed from China and financed by yourself,
…you know the deal.
Though neither Geithner / Paulson is Jewish, the Egyptians and Libyans
have appealed to OWS, but virtually noone there
as been attracted to the Egyptians’ and Libyans’ need to run from
scapegoating and arrogance to scapegoating, and virtually all appear
desirous of quite the opposite, namely running from scapegoating and
arrogance to “free, equal and (deliriously) happy,” these events are
poignantly relevant to the Jewish experience, I would think.
(I would add: the Libyans/Egyptians are welcome to join us in running
from scapegoating and arrogance to free, equal, happy (only.))
The theft of the American system, which, thanks to the internet and the
fast-learning curve of a large army of academicians and professionals
and less-privileged very bright, engaged, informed persons, has become
transparent and understood, has occurred owing to the identical process
to what happened in the 1930′s in Europe.
(My viewpoint:)
A class of process self-generated hypocritical masters of fear, a fear
originally intended for themselves, have inherited a privileged perch
from which to set policy based on transference.
Demonize a group and associate any foe with the demonized.

Columbine, Colorado Springs anti-Semitism events are entirely
connected, IN MY OPINION, with the Ted Haggard let’s castigate the gays,
no wait I’m gay, no wait I’m not gay affair (RECOUNTED PER BEST PERSONAL
MEMORY ONLY — VALIDITY OR MEANING OF HIS OWN STATEMENTS OR BASIS OF
CONFUSION UNKNOWN)
When it came time for Iowa cops to crack down on the immigrants mania, they chose
the meat shop at Postville.
First, it was gays who were / are told by some religious persons they do
not deserve to live, or, they are second rate persons.
(I don’t know how to do this w/o getting very close to spamming. I struggle to
avoid getting any closer than I must.)
I have provided a thorough understanding why the combined developmental and genetic occurrence
of homosexuality serves the numerical genetic advantage “of the group.,” surely, even optimally,
after so many generations of homo sapiens.
But the castigation of gays has caused their over-representation in the West. What matters, and
what may have been foreseen after all, that being something I can only imagine if that is part of
a conveyed lesson in science, morality and history, is the process self-generated “bad gays.”
Among their most prominent moving history have been Hitler (famously feminine,) JFK’s killers
(substantially gay fascists, going by the compelling evidence starting with Oliver Stone’s movie,)
J.Edgar Hoover, and some more of your and my favorites.
After it was gays, it was Jews. Then nations were integrated and it was perfectly legal, legitimately
citizenship-possessed or green card-carrying immigrants.
Judging is convenient in many ways on many levels, probably something variable infinitely.
But what matters to history is it offers control, then scapegoating.
THE FEAR OF BEING WRONGLY FERRETED OUT AS GAY IS THE
FEAR OF FASCISM.
This is where morality, history and psychiatry become precisely, exactingly one and the same.
The Jewish Bible is part of the Christian Bible. I have been presenting evidence that the
Eastern moralities are the very ***SAME*** but for the scapegoating tricky described herein.
Jews believe G-d (Christian, but spelling that way in deference. Actually, I come from a
cluster of mixed families that just just might be more so described in terms of depth and
breadth than any other, including one presently able to speak some Arabic, that ability
waning, and including a Mormon who passed in a special event) reveals h / h / itself through
Jewish history.
I believe history will turn when scapegoating ends. I’ve proposed how
the above twist provides for a mathematical gradient and the means of better understanding
information and a path to a new technological awakening.
Jewish is generally defined by Jewish mother, and so if the history bit has any
validity to it at all, then a mitochondrial match will be the first means of proving
that OWS is integral to the completion of a lesson in science, morality and history.
So, this is going to call for a few demonstrably thoroughly Jewish women whose
mitochondrial DNA can be used for comparison. By the way, avoiding viral degradation
best preserves its integrity. One way to do that is through an almost singularly
Jewish particular tradition.
I have proposed how the above was calculated such that there is no identifable starting point.
I am most sorry to have to inform: having a family that may
be less capable than I am at haggling with car dealers should
I kick, and inasmuch as this pertains a theory that implies
life as usual after a major simultaneous proving and technological
awakening, I must inform as to all ideas being documented original
as to their specificity, and, I happen to have the substantial
additional elements for making sense of it so as to render any
imitator looking like a fool.
Well, OK then.
Your stereotypes are showing,or is that now in fashion? :>)
This is a problem for the Jewish community in the US right now. Most American Jewish people are progressive and have been in favor of things like socialized medicine and civil rights etc, etc. In the 1930, much of the most anti-capitalist American left was made up of Jewish people. At the same time Jewish people’s group identity is proverbially very strong. So the fact that many of the people associated with the financial disaster are Jewish: Friedman, Greenspan, Summers, Rubin… Blankfein, may logically create a conflict between group loyalty, with the fear of Jews becoming the scapegoat and the groups traditional ideological position. Add to that, that Israel appears on the brink of starting a war with Iran and you can easily see that these are not easy times to be a progressive Jewish person. I think there is special merit in the brave stand that Stiglitz, Krugman, Rodrik and Roubin, not to leave out Phil Weiss and MJ Rosenberg and the members of J-Street are taking on all of these issues.
