At the very beginning of the GOP race, it was more or less assumed from the outset that all the other candidates were “not Romney” alternatives to eventually be found lacking. That opinion was almost as prevalent in the leftie alternative media as it was in the MSM.
Why?
It’s interesting to me that the GOP’s new hill to die on is the ACA, and it was Romney who kind of invented it, in all its crappy “glory”, beyond sub-standard by developed world standards, in Mass.
If we are to retain any social safety net at all in terms of healthcare in the US, we HAVE to actually fix our healthcare system. And fixing it will require some sort of actual “massive government takeover of healthcare”, which RomnObamacare is definitely not. This really is a matter of national security. Our healthcare costs are just off the charts and even more of a threat to our republic than even our shocking military expenditures. We can’t afford to both prop up gazillions of health care oligarchs and ALSO get health care to sick people. You can have one or the other. You can’t have both.
But Romneycare/Obamacare is designed to try to do a bit of both. The healthcare oligarchs are set up as perpetual beneficiaries of some perverted version of public utilities.
I suspect that Obama’s going to win, regardless. Wall Street is backing him (for good reason, from their POV!) But I’m still interested in wondering what would happen if Romney were to win. Would ObamaRomenyCare suddenly become hugely popular with the Fox viewers? Or would Romney just propose an identical bill and it would be seen as “better”" or “good” by most Republicans?
Alas, we’ll probably never know. It’s in the interests of the MIC and Wall Street to get Obama re-elected. And they tend to get what they want. I sadly suspect that those among us who are left watching from the sidelines will only be able to guess in futility about equally sad scenarios that almost could have happened.

It helps that many of Romney’s positions are virtually indistinguishable from Obama’s (that is, when Romney has a distinguishable position). After all, our corporate overlords couldn’t risk an outcome that might lead to a challenge against their hegemony.
Oh, and as for Faux…last I heard, Faux hates Romney.
Time to start thinking about 2016. You know the two major parties are already planning that. But first we have to change the political culture so that ordinary people are paying attention to what is going on.
A lot of Baptists in the South are going to sit out as well.
Never thought I’d feel any kinship with Southern Baptists.
Newsflash
Despite the attempts to make Rocky Anderson (or Jill Stein) invisible or irrelevant, this will fail.
In my own honest and studied opinion Rocky Anderson is the only viable option to break past the corporate corrupted plutocracy.
Rocky Anderson- He da man.
thanks athena1 — concur and recc’d
In view of the hundreds of millions of $$ swirling in and around this 2012 WH election “cycle” one can reasonably conclude the Rs have done what was required by the American national political duopoly they share with the Ds.
The Rs have given Americans months of political ballet/roller derby as Michelle,Herman,Tim and Rick Perry were pushed off or left due to obvious political implosion/malpractice to leave on the R WH Contender Stage the likes of Newt,The Other Rick,Ron The R Who Is A L Too and Mittens Romney who is the focal point of this FDL Diary put up by athena1.
We are getting the bread and circus stuff the money people pay for handsomely which gets sprinkled across American political media gravity centers whether they be electronic or printed words on paper. It is(was) projected some time back that Barack Obama’s 2012 WH Re-Election Telethon will be sticker pricing out at around one billion $$. Needless to say the Rs will spend as much or more on whoever they finally settle on to contest the WH Oval Office with.
It would have been politically useful if the Rs were capable of putting someone up against Barack Obama who would/could make Barack Obama sweat some political uncertainties as November 2012 gets closer. Would have been but that is not what the money people seem to be orchestrating for Americans in/with this 2012 WH election cycle. Appears the pay-offs expected of a second Obama WH term are viewed as sizeable for those who want Wall Street to win,Iran to get attacked and the Big Banks to skate away with the ill-gotten gains they did a stick-up on the American people and taxpayers to get. Obama is fronting for Holder, the Pentagon/CIA and does a nice AIPAC tap dance. Why not four more years of POTUS Barack Obama in the WH? He is a very good R branded as a D.
Barack Obama can do/will do what Mitt Romney(R) would do anyway — likely even better being Obama(D)(DINO) readily defangs the D partisans who went after Bush and Cheney for eight years. Barack Obama often is doing/does what G.W.Bush,R.B.Cheney,Alan Simpson etc. and the Wall Streeters and Big Bankers seek or want. See daily tilt/output of places like Dkos or Salon’s Walsh/Kornacki Obot/Dbot Tag Team for two examples of this D partisan defanging that POTUS Barack Obama(DINO)(Duopoly) enables despite Obama largely doing what Bush and Cheney did. or would do/have done with a third WH Reign Of Error/Terror.
If Mitt Romney should win the WH in November 2012? So do many of the same $$ people/crowd paying for Barack Obama’s to be/stay in the WH.
A comment I put together earlier on a FDL Diary put up by jest lines up with this athena1 FDL Diary pretty well — should anyone like/want to scan/read this earlier comment just click shootthatarrow in the blue ribbon above — that comment is next one up after this comment — is in the comments thread to a worthy FDL Diary put up by jest on Sunday,April 1,2012 titled–

I’m planning on voting for Rocky. :)
I just don’t really expect for us to win this year. But I’m definitely not voting for RomnObama.
