I missed the Caturday farewell last week, and I am eager for Southern Dragon to have days off and a most well-deserved day of rest from his diligent labors all wek at FDL. Like the other regular posters, he has created a special kind of community through his efforts, but I am going to miss our day of sharing all things critter, and especially tiger, kitteh and cat.
Not to step on his toes or be morose over the matter, I am hoping perhaps we can (as a community) take on a shared responsibility, a bit like happens with PUAC, to continue our tradition of Sunday communion to celebrate the four-leggeds (and some birds) we love and feed and share stories of the beauties of nature and the joy they bring to our lives.
Sometime recently, a cougar kitten had become a familiar sight at The Black Hole, our family business in Los Alamos. It seemed to be an orphan and at about 20 pounds, it was really too young to be on its own. And, plus also. it would not remain safe there if it grew up in too-close proximity to hoomans.
Enter a box, a string and a pork chop. Yes, that trick we all tried as children was employed to capture the little guy, and he was relocated to a refuge in a distant National Forest where he will be nurtured without human contact until he is old enough to be released to the wild.
That’s my story of the week. Our cat enclosure is essentially finished now, and the cats have been able to venture outdoors again, we hope more safe now than before, from random dogs. I can’t hang out much and host as (un)Occupy ABQ is holding out at a foreclosed home at the moment. I’ll try not to end up in jail again, but I can’t say for sure. What say you? Got any creature tales of comfort and joy that you want to share this week?

I forgot to mention, there is a very nice black cat at the (un)forclosure action. We have had plenty of dogs at our events, but this is the first cat. She’s kind of petite, but not as petite as Kuroneko.
What a sweet idea bg.
and speaking of cougars
Very good idea, and maybe adding to the title something like Formerly Caturday, perhaps?
Or Caturday Night? I’m in for a rotating host forum, as long as there are enough hosts to spread around.
bg, did you get a picture of the baby? Great story!
We’re the murderous elderly-cat killing pittbulls ever found?
that was really wonderful of you to take such care with the cougar kitten. it warms my heart.
My cat story this week is that with all the horrible heat (110 every day), by the evening I’m wrung out and can only either lay in bed and read or lay on the coach and watch a movie. Picillo and I have had many long scritch and petting sessions this week. It makes the dog extremely jealous as he is a huge hound dog and doesn’t get to recline on my chest/belly for his attention.
And, with the weather, Picky only spends his mornings outside and then the afternoons and evenings inside.
PS – I jumped to my Picky story and neglected to say Thanks BG! – working together seems to work. :)
Hi, BG! I don’t know if you looked at last week’s Caturday – I was epu’d, probaby…and you had quite a busy week. *g*
But after SD made his announcement and I got over my shock, I suggested that very thing, rotating hosts like PUAc.
But I have noticed that Caturday has had fewer visitors this summer, including me, and I wondered if maybe we should wait till fall, when people will be back from summer vacations and spending less time doing outdoor recreation, therefore have more time, more hosts.
It’s nice that you jumped on it, though. As usual, I debated with myself, and meanwhile, here you are!
I do hope you don’t get arrested, although it does make your point. It seems to me arresting anyone who attempts any sort of assembly or speech is coming to be seen as the norm, and I’m appalled and sad.
Also, too, glad to hear your cat enclosure is ready. One reason I’m starting to wish for a place of my own is to be able to build such a thing. And so kind of you to take care of the little lion cub.
Good Afternoon bg and company,
I’m picturing SD lounging and relaxing with his tribe, maybe just reading, maybe just visiting with some two-legged friends for a few hours, Friday evening and Saturday, maybe just a quiet nap or some unhurried cooking. When I have taken breaks from established routines, I have given myself the luxury of not worrying about how I am going to fill that time, purpose of a break really, isn’t it?
Yesterday 72F for a high, light breezes, I had gotten up too early so needed a nap in the afternoon. A thick blanket on the chaise lounger in the side yard for padding, fully clothed with a light sweater, a wide-brimmed hat and slept uninterrupted in the full warming sun, for an hour and a half with Mcat curled in next to my legs on the foot rest.
Had to throw in the cat reference, there. ;-)
Thanks, it’s true, there haven’t been so many folks commenting in the summer, it might be better to start up again in fall. I for one have disruptions that make a hole in my schedule, and suspect so do a lot of others. Glad to know you cooled down up there, so did we.
Okay, you and Ruth are brats for shoving it in my cute little face.
But, I’m so happy that you’re cute little faces are enjoying themselves.
It’s just for a minute here, and then we’ll have a fabulous Fall and a not so cold cozy winter here.
So there!
For the most part, I think the weather in my hood is rather neutral. A few weeks of this icky hot and it hasn’t ever been cold enough for me. I like the couch blankets and fire in the fireplace.
Even the animals, critters, except the Ants, seem to like it here.
YOUR
That Ruth is wisely doing the best of two localities, weather-wise. I’m hoping for more snow than the one or two times we had any to deal with last winter. There was barely enough ice for ice fishing for heaven’s sake, the time when the boat-less fisher man or woman is supposed to be unbound by the watery limitations imposed by the three other seasons.
As my friends were busy working the recall, these were mostly the people who voted for Walker. :^)
and demi at 13 — LOL.
yup. People who’ve never experienced winter and winter sports don’t understand how one can actually miss snow and cold weather.
Glad you had Mcat with you, nonquixote. I’m sure she (he?) appreciated your being around, not out working so hard.
I spent yesterday morning relaxing on my recliner with two of three kittehs on my lap. They seem to miss me now that I’m away at work so much; and when I am home and sitting down, they’re quick to pile on, even though it’s summer. *g*
Mcat is going to the 97th birthday party for her former care-taker tomorrow at the senior center. I’m typing as M is sleeping in the other room, it needs to be a surprise party for Mcat, otherwise she will make herself scarce if she hears or even reads about the kitty carrier.
Funny. I forgot she was the one who visits her former person. You are a good person to take her so regularly. My late feral, Itsa, was handed off to me by a 92-year old neighbor who had to move to assisted living. She would ask about Itsa through a friend, but it made me sad that there was no way I could imagine getting Itsa into a carrier, let alone to transport her to visit Ann.
IIRC, Mcat is fine once she gets there, right? Few kittehs actually like the thought of the carrier.
In the Caturday tradtion, I’m going to (try to) post a couple of pix of my kittehs relaxing in the heat on the patio. I say try, because it has taken half the afternoon just to upload them from the camera. Dunno why flickr is so slow.
Anyway, let’s see: Squeaky, laid out in the cool dirt
Big Boy, the current feral, tamed enough to come inside the kitchen for meals;
I tried to get Pushy, too, but he got up and moved away as I clicked the shutter.
Smokey, on the old, non-functioning wall air conditioner, looking grumpy even though he’s pretty content
All yer kitteh are cute, but that Big Boy is something’. What a looker.
Need a canoe? anyway, here the local lake failed to freeze over last winter for the first time ever heard of. And indeed, I’ve missed a horrendous summer, not sorry at all.
We’ll be vewwy vewwy quiet. Mine had to get used to the carrier for a few days before I could get them to the vet. Here, I have feral/outdoor cats that I’ve sort of adopted along with the household. They’re happy for a set of extra hands doing the skritching, but I’m definitely a latecomer.
My feral was easier to get into a carrier than the indoor one, but we had no choice, she had to get to the vet once a year and it was always a bad time.
Abner lounges on the back of the couch.

Gracie, looking like she had a hard night.

Very contented. thanks.
oh, lovely, thanks. When she’d get out, my albino always found the dirtiest, nastiest place to lie in that she could, no simple dust for her.
Aw,ysp, yes, he is a big, handsome boy, isn’t he? Very short dense fur, nice to stroke.
I have been lucky somehow in my kittehs…some twenty or so over the years, and I believe every one has been handsome. Have a friend who’s had two of her own, and took care of her sister’s for several months;I swear they were the three ugliest cats I’ve ever seen. Didn’t know it was possible.(of course, I never breathed a word of my opinion to her).
Do you know, a few days ago Smokey went out, headed straight for the dirt yard (no grass, barely any weeds), and dug a shallow hole.
I watched in astonishment, never having seen him do such a thing, and assuming he was going to pee or poop.
No, he threw himself on his back into the depression he’d dug, and wallowed like an elephant scratching his back! I could not believe it.
The next night I managed to get the flea meds onto him…way overdue.
And he hasn’t flung himself into the dirt since, isn’t chewing on his fur/flesh, and hasn’t even whined so much to go out.
Could it all have been about getting relief for flea itches?
If so, I feel so bad. Poor baby! Although, of course, he does not make the application of the topical med easy…
Abner! Gracie! Yeah, she does look a bit weary….Both lovely, though, as always.
Excuse me for intruding with something not at all joyful, but please share this information about pet food bowl recall with others who have pets. (from fatster’s round-up).

Lol. Actually, when I first saw Gracie, I thought she had the face of a boxer. I wouldn’t say she’s a glamorpuss, but she is completely loveable.
Thanks for that. Spread the news far and wide.
Any volunteers for rotating host next week?
Oops. Deafening silence, huh? Maybe we should hold off till after labor day?
One last photo – weather, not cat, =related:
temp in the always-in-shade patio about 3:00 pm today
Have a good week, everybody, and let’s hope we can all stay under 100 degrees (let alone 110!)
Nice job today, everybody! It seems like this could work!
I appreciate the community and sharing, that is the whole point of it, seems to me.
My neighbor reported this morning that she came home late last night and heard quite a rustling in the garden. She got out her flashlight, and suddenly appeared a raccoon, and then 4 more, chowing down on grapes. I have been suspecting that raccoons were around due to the conditions in the water and food containers at the feral cat colony. They don’t seem to be consistent there, but I guess there is a variety of food in the gardens and yards that appeals to raccoons.
Love the suggestions for a name for the (not quite)Caturday, I thought about a few things too, and finally thought that animals do provide a lot of comfort and joy. I considered “Creature Comforts,” “Creacha Culcha,” and some other things, and it would be good to decide on some way to identify our Sunday communion. . .or whatever.
Anyway, thanks for coming by, nice to see you all. Looking forward to what happens next week.
Okie dokie. I typed that before I remembered we said we’d wait until fall.
Creacha Culcha. Lol. ‘cept autocorrect does not approve.. Took multiple tries to type. I guess we’ll wait till fall for another catz diary.
Thanks for doing this. On yesterday I was wondering what we were all doing and how the critters are…nice to see the updates.
Creacha Culcha. Hmmm. Mulling over that one…kinda like.
Kindle autocorrect seems not to mind that name….
