There is no way to talk about the tragedy we have experienced here just now. It has struck the progressive community close to home and we are extending our love to the family; our neighbors and friends, at this time.
But it gives me an opportunity to post a link to this story that should have more attention. Our Secretary of State, Diana Duran, is a handmaiden of ALEC, and we have been force fed too much of her testimony on “voter fraud” at the Roundhouse not to find the biting irony in her complicity to cover up voter forgery by Governor Martinez.
Also too, Governor Susana Martinez, most comfortable in the role of Prosecutor in Chief and as a future hope for Republicans nationwide, deserves visibility for her own personal lawbreaking. She is a good one for that apt old saw “do as I say, not as I do.”
Thanks to ProgressNow New Mexico for their work in bringing it all to light!

Thanks for doing this, bgrothus – at last a diary I can recommend (previous strong ones were on Late Night – see Teddy Partridge’s most excellent one.)
Recommend.
Sorry, but there is a way to talk about the assault weapons and atrocity that occurred on Saturday – I misunderstood your post, which seems to be a deflection into Republican/Democrat issues from your links.
The gun issue is so hugely important and devastating – I am puzzled why you are taking this tack.
I don’t feel this is a timely post, so I am retracting my ‘recommend’ though I understand you don’t personally feel up to the conversation at present. Not a personal retraction at all, just my own feeling on the subject.
Good Afternoon Barbara,
Interesting story, thanks for the post. Do as I say, is typical, we got ours, screw you.
Two networks coming in today to see the inauguration ceremonies. Brooks and Shields or FAUX commentary, so I’m doing something else on my lunch break.
More light into dark recesses. Thanks
I’m following some peculiar and seeming cross-purposes by our WI Attorney General, in regards to his recent arguing for the constitutionality of partisan, union busting, Act 10 rather than simply prosecuting law breakers under already decided case law. A lot I apparently don’t understand.
Juliana, I have long been involved in voter rights in NM, and it has been a partisan issue for a long time. Same with immigrant rights.
I simply cannot talk about the tragedy right now. I totally understand why the gun issue was “off topic” after the Sandy Hook deaths. I feel it would intrude on the grief so many are dealing with right now, and because it has hit so many so hard here, it just is not something I am going to do.
I do think the other story is important, and I am talking about it now.
I took the shooting story as expressed grief/sadness over a tragedy relating to people who had been beneficial social activists in a close-knit portion of a community. Immediate grief clouding fair analysis.
I didn’t see any deflection into the second part, simply additional or other news stories.
I’ll recc’d a second time.
La Tejana’s crimes and misdemeanors seem to be quite trivial when compared with the graft and corruption of the Democrat Governor Bill Richardson and his minions.
She did try some sneaky moves early in her term but was quickly straightened out by the NM Supreme Court.
Critics of the DREAM Act are often castigated for blaming innocent children for the crimes of their parents.
You castigate Martinez for something her grandparents did, so I guess we know where you stand.
La Tejana has not been “straightened out.” SM vs: BR is much like the pot calling the kettle black. Some think she is worse.
You missed the point.
Please enlighten me.
(((bg))) tweeted and recommended. i know this is a difficult time for you – thank you for taking the time to write this up for us.
i would like to see more ‘news from’ diaries.
I am castigating her for the driver’s license issue. She is a hypocrite.
Thanks, Suz. I have to look at myself deeply before I talk about the shootings, and I am devastated for his family, friends of mine. There is not enough information, and I have nothing but sadness for the long arc of recovery.
I’d like to know who thinks Martinez is more corrupt than Richardson and what they base that notion on. Politically she may be grasping and arrogant but she will have to work very hard to approach the criminal behavior of Richardson and other Dems. here in NM.
I’m no supporter of Martinez but she did expand Medicaid under the ACA.
Richardson has friends, Clintons, in high places so he will never face justice while we are left with the finincial damage and the Train To Nowhere.
What driver’s license issue? Your article links to stories about voter fraud and her grandparents being… whatever the current PC phrase is.
You said the old saw “do as I say, not as I do” was apt along with a link to her grandparents immigration status, but that wasn’t the point? I seem to be having a really blond day so maybe you could actually state your point about the old saw directly enough for me to understand?
On the shooting, I had no idea the family were friends of yours. I know what it’s like to lose people I care for but not like this, not in such a horrific way. All I can say i that I wish there was something I could say to you and all the others grieving today.
I don’t know if prayers actually count for anything, but you all have mine.
NM allows undocumented immigrants to get driver’s licenses. Martinez has taken the anti-immigrant stance in trying to get rid of the opportunity for people who live here to be legal drivers. She and others talk about it as if it is a criminal matter. I prefer to have licensed drivers. I am not going to write a diary about it.
Her family was undocumented and became legal by osmosis, I guess. It simply was not codified at the time. I don’t understand the need to criminalize people who come to live here by virtue of their immigration status. We have thousands of law abiding small business owners here who pay taxes, pay employees and provide economic opportunity for all residents. Making them criminal drivers is not something I think helps anyone. Driving them out of state over their immigration status makes no sense.
Her family was undocumented. I find it absurd for her to try to close the barn door after she benefited from it.
“Her family was undocumented. I find it absurd for her to try to close the barn door after she benefited from it.”
Gotcha. You’re not castigating Martinez for something she never did, you’re calling her a hypocrite for not letting everyone else do it, too. My grandfather beat his wife: illegal then, illegal now, but it would be absurd of me to oppose present day wife beaters because he got away with it and I got to be born?
