If I had a nickel for every time I heard some idiot say, “There are plenty of jobs out there; these welfare people are just lazy,” I’d be able to retire quite comfortably.
People that say such things want to believe that being poor and living on government assistance is a non-stop party. Folks like that believe the only way to get these people to be tax payers is to stop all government assistance.
I’ve argued with folks (usually Republicans) that if they cut all government assistance, they will spend twice as much to arrest and lock up all the people that won’t have any way or any hope of supporting themselves and their families except turning to crime…like stealing food and clothing.
Here’s the big old Republican dream…
Cut all government assistance. No more food stamps, WIC, Medicare, Social Security, or anything else the government gives away to those lazy, good-for-nothing poor, sick, and old people.
Those that have been living high off the government hog but are able to work will give up and take one of those millions of jobs just waiting out there for them. Those jobs might be for low wages and have no benefits, but that’s what lazy people deserve. They just need to work hard for minimum wage, and that will be its own reward.
Sick people are whiners. People get sick. If they have been lazy and didn’t prepare to be sick, they die…so sad, too bad; why should lazy sick people get our money.
Old people are just lazy people that have lived long enough to become a burden to society. If you toss them off the dole, they will get off their lazy old asses or die…so sad, too bad; these geezers have lived long enough. They need to move on and let people with money breathe the air.
Poor, brown, and black people are naturally lazy. That’s why they end up consuming the most government assistance. If we stop coddling these human drains, they will get jobs and pay taxes. It’s just a matter of some tough love. Life on welfare is a wild party. It’s no wonder they stay on the dole.
If you believe any of this garbage, you are an idiot…or a Republican.
The American dream is supposed to be a rags-to-riches story. Anyone from anywhere can (with hard work and a love of God) be anything they want to be. There are no limits.
That’s just bullshit. It could be true someday if the playing field is leveled, but the truth is that the playing field for old, poor, brown, and black people goes uphill. The field for white people with money runs down hill.
It’s been that way since we bought and sold poor, brown, and black people in open markets. Emancipation was crippled by all the laws passed that restricted the choices of poor, brown, and black people.
In the last election, several states tried to make it harder for old, poor, brown, and black people to vote. The field is unlevel and it’s littered with mines. It’s been that way forever. So, if you believe the Republican dream, you are an idiot.
Any attempt to level the playing field is called “redistribution of wealth.” This is a horrible idea to Republicans because to them it means that old, poor, brown, and black people will be allowed into white people’s homes to take whatever they can carry.
If you slash and burn government spending like the ultra right freaks advocate, you will be up to your hips in old, poor, brown, black, and white people. There will be more homeless and sick people. The mess that austerity brings will overwhelm us faster that the scourge of the federal deficit.
If you take money out of the economy…the economy shrinks. When the economy shrinks, business tightens its belt. When business tightens its belt, you get more poor and sick people because business let them go. You can’t save the patient by slowing the flow of blood from the heart and cutting off all but the essential body parts necessary for survival.
If Republicans are right about the old and the poor and the only reason they don’t contribute to the economy is because they are lazy, the Republican dream will work.
If, on the other hand, the old and poor turn out to be victims of an unlevel playing field and cutting them loose to fend for themselves won’t force them to get jobs, then we are screwed.
Which scenario seems the most logical? We have real economic disparity in this country and less money will make the problem even worse…OR…all we need to do is cut these freeloaders off and our economy will pick right up and everything will be whiskey and whores.
I know what idiots think.

I love this spirited, on-target post! Thanks!
That’s redundant.
Nice piece.
Unfortunately, if you believe any of this stuff, you could also be an important member of the Democratic leadership!
Yes, I wouldn’t make this exclusive to the repugs because there are plenty of dim leaders in that group.
It’s not just Democratic politicians who are pushing Austerity on us all (and btw, there’s precious little diff between “R” and “D” Pols these days at any level of govt. they are all in thrall to the 1%).
I hear a TON of my trad-Dem voter pals beefing about the poors, etc, “cheating on welfare.” It’s now customary to *blame* all problems on lazy slackers who just don’t “feel like” getting a job. Hear it all the time and not just from conservatives.
Sad to say. Righteous rant. It’s called: Divide & Conquer. Pit the Haves v. the Have Nots, and make it seem like it’s the “Have Nots” who are just massively ripping off the “Haves.” But hey: don’t look over there at the gazillionaire who’s really the one picking your pocket.
This is what redundant sounds like, OFG: Nobody in Congress is an idiot (well, maybe there are some). The problem is demagoguery. They who tout this line are quite clear about the facts, but they know what will sell: Racism.
My big brother was a typical anglo male victim of this appeal from, Jesus what? Maybe 1963. He could wax pontifical in a heartbeat when the subject came up. I won’t repeat it, you know how it goes.
Once I asked him what if his next door neighbor Jim, who had a really cute little blonde wife and three blue eyed boys, got killed on the road, not at work where his cute wife would get an $8.5M settlement from Monsanto, but just in an accident where he was maybe a little drunk like we were at the time, so all she got was a few $thousand in insurance, would he think she should get some government help?
He said, without hesitation, “Of course. She’d need help to get some job training and get a good job or at least get a good new man to raise those boys (with which alternative we agreed she’d not have much of a problem.”
You picked up on my transparent gig right away, but we were fishing in Aransas Bay, and his head was elsewhere, so he bit just like a big Spec. Kapow! I won’t bore you with my follow-up, you’ve got the idea. He got mad at me when it dawned on him what I’d got him to say.
Was he an actual racist? I don’t know. I actually don’t think so, we both had black and Hispanic friends and he especially admired some Mexicans we knew. One guy named Luis, who was rich as Croesus, was eighty something yet played two sets of tennis every day.
But I know he sure could get his teeth into the operative scenario. We didn’t know anybody who filled the bill, but he had the song down pat: “The fat, chiseling, black (we all know the actual word), welfare queen in NY, NY, who gets six welfare checks and has a kid a year so she can get more. I’m not for sure what they call that child care program, I’m damned sure he didn’t know, but he’d latched onto the story line like a pit bull.
I’d never heard of Rush or John Birch at the time, but based on later information, I’d guess that was the source of most of this fantasm.
It’s called propaganda. It’s not important that it be especially clever, just that it be exceptionally well financed. Madison Avenue can come up with the lines, that’s a couple mil, what costs is TV time. Over the years that’s $billions. The people behind this monumental effort are not idiots, just rich and scared.
Recommended highly. Living down here in the deep South(Florida),I deal with racism every day. I’ll wager that rich, eighty something, Mexican Luis didn’t pick tomatoes in the Florida summer heat to acquire his wealth. Masters and slaves come in all colors. Isn’t it funny how we admire someone of wealth without having a clue as to how they became wealthy and how many backs they rode to the top ? PEACE
It’s not just the South. I grew up in San Antonio, which any Texan will tell you is NOT the South, but I see more open racism in the Cleveland outer ring suburbs and exurbs than I ever did in San Antonio. Here in NE Ohio, certain white ethnicities tend to be more stridently anti-black racist, and they only mouth it to people who look like them who they think probably agree with them, but it’s definitely there, and just as ridiculous as everything Cynicman and RaggMopp described.
For example, a white mechanic once told us that the foreclosure crisis was orchestrated by Obama so that white people would lose their homes and then “THOSE people, you know, the n-words,” could move in and get Section 8 to pay for a 250K house in Richmond Heights and HEAP would pay all of their energy bills for free.
I asked him to name once such house where that had happened, and where was a 250K house in Richmond Heights, anyway? He spluttered, then went on about black people trying to get him to do work for them for free because they were black and he was white, and we left.
He also lost our business, which is a damned shame because he is a good mechanic, and ours is not the only business he has lost. But I vote with my pocketbook when I can.
LOVE. Luis was an Hildago. He came by his fotune the old fashioned way: He inherited it.
“…I grew up in San Antonio, which any Texan will tell you is NOT the South,…”
By God, OB, that’s a fact! I moved from Austin to Southern California in 1965 and experienced no culture shock whatsoever. Then I moved from Northern California to Nacogdoches, Texas in 1977 and it was as if I’d rode a time machine back a hundred years. Later, after some years of acclimatization, I did some work in Alabama. It was just like being home in Nacogdoches County.
Texas has got to be ripe for some shocking changes. How long can this loopy bunch of Baptists continue their run. You know that in 1965 a Republican couldn’t get elected dog catcher. They rode the racist reaction to power (hell, all over the south) and now they are walking a tight rope (aka gerrymander). You know the end is near when they introduce bills in the leg. to prevent the teaching of critical thinking.
