Susanne Rust and Meg Kissinger of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel were Pulitzer finalists for their reporting on BPA.
"FDA relied heavily on BPA lobby: Regulators actively reached out to industry, e-mails show"
As federal regulators hold fast to their claim that a chemical in baby bottles is safe, e-mails obtained by the Journal Sentinel show that they relied on chemical industry lobbyists to examine bisphenol A’s risks, track legislation to ban it and even monitor press coverage.
In one instance, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s deputy director sought information from the BPA industry’s chief lobbyist to discredit a Japanese study that found it caused miscarriages in workers who were exposed to it. This was before government scientists even had a chance to review the study.
"I’d like to get information together that our chemists could look at to determine if there are problems with that data in advance of possibly reviewing the study," Mitchell Cheeseman, deputy director of the FDA’s center for food safety and applied nutrition, said in an e-mail seeking advice from Steven Hentges, executive director of the trade association’s BPA group.[...]

This kind of relates to the idea that expert witness testimony in court cases can be thrown out if it’s not in agreement, e.g., with peer reviewed studies funded by pharmaceutical companies. The landmark decision making federal judges gatekeepers of such evidence was in response to a lawsuit having to do with prenatal effects of a pharmaceutical women used during pregnancy.
As soon as it was known that Canada would probably declare BPA a toxic substance, big companies stopped using it in baby bottles. The companies who wanted to stay in business stopped using it in refillable water bottles, etc. The FDA is corrupt. If you want BPA out of your products I suggest you do the one thing that will work and that is to stop buying products made with it and let the head office of companies know that you are boycotting products containing BPA. As soon as there is a large enough dent in profits, companies will stop using it. Do not wait for the FDA to protect you. Look at the long list of recalled deadly prescription drugs for proof of that fact. Aspartame and fluoride are two deadly products that the FDA allows. Rumsfeld managed to get aspartame approved in 1974, when he was CEO of Searle. The FDA had banned it for many years previously because it was known to cause brain tumors and cancer in test animals. Two of the products produced from aspartame when it is consumed are methanol and formaldehyde; Rumsfeld’s WMD. Many medical problems are now known to be caused by aspartame. It wasn’t the MSM that dumbed down America; it was fluoride. Think about it; ingesting a tube of toothpaste will kill a small child. The FDA has never approved fluoride. Could the reason for that be because they knew they could not prove it is safe to ingest? The second link is to “Sweet Misery”; a 1hr and 30 min documentary on aspartame. The third is to “50 Reasons to Oppose Fluoridation”.

The federal government has decided to add the synthetic sex hormone bisphenol A on Canada’s list of toxic substances. This shift is likely to lead to a ban on the sale of baby bottles containing BPA and BPA reductions in canned infant formula.
Starting today, Canada is the first country to categorize as risky BPA, the organic compound used in many food and drink packaging applications, making plastic hard.
In April, when the National Toxicology Program released a draft report voicing concern about the chemical, a debate was started. Beginning that month, several important corporations, such as Wal-Mart and Babies “R” Us, stopped manufacturing products containing the controversial chemical. “

What is really sad -and very telling about our country and it’s devotion to ‘capitalism’ is that it takes the Europeans and other countries to bring the pressure -via the marketplace- to have our manufacturers do what is right.
It also shows what a sham the FDA is.
