I do not bite
Good day all!
Ultrastable glass is cool stuff. Medicine delivery?!?
Now they’re predicting additional sealevel rise of 1m by 2100, due largely to underestimation of how fast the Greenland ice sheets would melt.
Gee, you store radioactive water, the area gets more radiation. TEPCO’s water treatment plant startup gets delayed again.
Ice on Mercury. Also possible organic material. Sure different from the Mercury I learned about in school mumbly-something years ago.
Look what Curiousity found. It is part of the rock, not a piece of Curiousity. Curiousity is ready to start drilling. NASA is already planning the next rover, to land in 2021. Neat new Mars meteorite.
Britian has suspended drilling at sub glacial Antarctic Lake Ellsworth. Equiptment failures, be about 5 years before they try again. First samples from Lake Vostok are lifeless. Says little, these were samples frozen around the drill bit.
More whaling. Just for research, but waste not, want not, right? Wonder how much more of it they’ll do with Fukushima killing all the local fishing. But Japan’s government is right on the problem. The price of tuna caught in North eastern Japan doesn’t seem to be hurting.
Fish can climb 300ft waterfalls. Why this hasn’t been a question on a game show, I don’t know. Before this, I’d have been off by a zero.
Peel and Stick Solar panels. Imagine what the price of just one nuclear reactor could do to advance this.
Vomiting Larry. He’s actually a useful guy to have around.
They’re still hyping this comet. Forgive those of us who remember Comet Kohoutek if we don’t rush out and buy a telescope.
We always suspected big brains came with an evolutionary cost, we now have research to support it. Our ancestors were smarter than we thought. I would post an alternative viewpoint, but the Intelligent Design folks STILL have not managed to get a peer reviewed article published.
Room temprature superconductor. New record is 86F. Note that there is NO minus in front of that number. The material is not currently usable commercially, but it shows it IS possible. “Strongly Hygroscopic” means it absorbs water QUICKLY and looses the desired properties.
I think squid are weird. Ever heard of a Vampire Squid? They aren’t bloodsuckers, they eat crap. How about a controllable squid? See what I mean? Weird!

Good morning, BoxTurtle! That is one weird looking thing up top. I thought it looked at first glance like a deformed hand. Eww…
Your radioactive water link goes here:
If you go to your drafts backstage at MyFDL you should be able to find them. You can go back to previous drafts all the way to the beginning, I think.
Impressive what exists just below the waterline, eh? And it’s not anywhere close to the weirdest Squid out there!
Boxturtle (Swimming in the ocean is fun, if you don’t have much imagination)
Well, isn’t that interesting. That was a perfectly good story. Almost as if the JG is doing a little bit of post publication censorship.
I got that link from enenews HERE. They’ve still got an excerpt.
Boxturtle (You’re not paranoid if they really ARE out to get you)
If there’s a way to do it, I can’t find it. I’m wondering if I hit save that last time.
Boxturtle (naw, it couldn’t be me. Must be FDL)
When I am doing my Friday posts I hit ‘save’ and then preview with every post. It’s the IT geek in me — always save. I usually have as many as 20 versions listed in reverse order (newest first).
Maybe not. I’ve done that on occasion and then wondered where something went!
I mean I hit save with every update/change.
Gee I wish we had edit here.
Good morning everyone.
Thank you for the post BoxTurtle.
Good Morning, I wish Over would go to the top when it is added….Just a thought. Hope everyone is well, warm, etc. Cold in central TX, but they keep talking about getting warmer, also wetter. Yuk.
I hunt down Over Easy (sometimes takes a little digging) and immediately recommend and comment. If you go directly to MyFDL it is usually at the bottom of the “recent” column quickly, but doesn’t hit the recommended list until it’s gotten a couple of recs. For that reason, I recommend my own Friday posts immediately.
Good idea…thanks
If it did, think of how many bad Over The Top puns Kris would make. Might be better this way.
Snow is melting here (YAY!), expecting temps in the high 30′s. Water table is still low here, if the Mississippi is expecting help from the Ohio it’s gonna be disappointed.
Boxturtle (Coyotes like Milkbones. At least the ones around here do)
I scrolled ahead in our local forecast and they’re predicting high of 55º on Friday and 64º on Saturday. This is unreal for NW Indiana! Rain both days. I swear if it gets that “warm” I will go for a bike ride. In January!
Oh wait…climate change is a hoax, innit?
;) Thanks, folks. Glad to know what is going on out there…
We are supposed to get in the high 40′s midweek with a possibility of 50′s late week but then the bottom drops out next week.
Whee, I love rollercoasters.
Morning BT & Pupses:
Wait: Nothing about Jeezuz riding dinosaurs 5,000 years ago? What kinda science stuff is this, anyway?
Is not drought relief a good thing?
Sunny warmer and very windy today. I was up and following your links BT. Thank you.
BBL….need to start doing something else useful….;)
I get up, change into bike shorts, pour some tea in my “bubba” bottle (that’s actually the brand, an insulated bottle) and hit the exercise bike. I’ve been doing 45 minutes for about a week, think I will kick it up to an hour later this week. Much different than my “real” bike, that I can ride for a couple of hours with enjoyment. This is just work.
I warned when I accepted Mondays that I would almost always post SOMETHING to annoy science deniers. Or fail to post something they think interesting and factual.
Boxturtle (I think the pictures of Jesus riding a Harley are much more realistic)
G’morning, Shoto. Glad you stopped by!
Thanks. Sort of a drive-by, though.
Actually, I’d like to see him riding an M109R. They eat Harleys for breakfast…
The Harley shirts are available now. You’ll have to photoshop the M109R yourself.
Boxturtle (Don’t you hate people who go around verbing nouns?)
Good morning, BT.
Thanks for the post. Quiet at the lake this morning so I forced myself to delurk.
Get in a half hour for me msmolly, appreciated. I’ve been on desk duty for a few days and the winter sports skating twice and skiing twicem might be finished.
(fiinished) as seems my ability to type this morning.
I got in about 2 miles yesterday on hiking trail but forecast of rain will certainly ruin the skiing for a few days:(
Good morning BT and firepups. Thanks for the post and host Turtleman.
Great links today. Still reading the last few.
I <3 squid.
I used to love to skate, but I’m pretty sure I left my (by now ancient) figure skates at neighbors in MI who used to flood their back yard for skating in the winter. I moved away in 2000 and I’m pretty sure left my skates behind at their house. Not that a fall is good any time, but I’d be considerably more hesitant to get on ice than I was 13 years ago.
“Some Spider.”
Take a few seconds and check this out.
Our warmup here later in the week is supposed to bring considerable rain, too. We have remnants of about 4″ of snow that fell in late December, and that will be washed away, along with the treacherous layer of ice at the bottom of my driveway.
My SO worries that this 58 year old’s body is gonna break rather than bend when I do my hills and wipeout, but I always tell its all in “learning how to fall” .
WOW. That’s fascinating. And the real spider knows to shake the spider sculpture to scare away predators. It’s really difficult to put the sculpture and the shaking down to just instinct. It seems too intentional.
Tricky. A true WTF moment for the researcher who realized what he was seeing.
Boxturtle (My husky frequently disguises herself as a pile of dirty snow)
A thaw followed by a hard freeze might glass over a local inland lake or two and allow me to get out my long skates and home-made version of this airfoil. Some science and physics involved here (keeping on topic) like determining the forces involved as a moving body impacts a hard surface. It has been five years since optimal ice conditions manifest locally.
We just learned last night at choir rehearsal that a woman who’d already had knee and hip replacement and was using one of those wheeled walkers with the seat to get around has had a bad fall, broke her distal femur, and is in a rehab facility for at least 3-4 months, non weight-bearing.
She’s probably close to my age, but is seriously overweight. It is possible that she’ll never recover enough to walk again.
So a fall is at the top of my mind this morning, even though I’m fit and agile.
BBL. Gotta make a sunflower seed run for my feeder. Since its been relatively cold lately, I’ve noticed up to a hundred birds munching on the high energy food.
Will check back later. Have a great day.
Yeah. I suppose the next step is to see if the spider can play cards.
Boxturtle (What if she plays cards, but draws for inside straights?)
That looks like all kinds of fun, nonquixote! I’d love to try it!
It just seems so…planned….like it can’t be just instinct. But probably is. Just like the &$%@&* woodpeckers “plan” to peck holes in my siding. Grrr.
Woodpeckers are your friends. There are only two reasons they’d hammer on your house:
1) Drumming for mating. Unlikely this time of year.
2) Digging for food. They don’t do this randomly, they have to heard or smell something.
So if you’ve got a woodpecker working on an area of your house, you likely have a bug problem. Woodpeckers found a termite problem before the termite folks could do so.
Boxturtle (Let the bird eat its fill, then let professionals clean up his leftovers)
Heh. I <3 squid too…calamari, sauteed or fried. YUM.
I dunno, BT. We are a heavily wooded neighborhood, and many of us have the woodpecker problem. We’ve taken to tacking up shiny mylar strips of “scare tape” to scare them away.
Termites are possible, of course, in cedar siding, but the home was inspected for termites when I bought it and was not infested then.
They peck big inch-plus holes and get inside and pull out pieces of insulation if I don’t get to them quickly enough.
Good Morning Box Turtle and Firedogs,
am deep in cake design mode, so I missed y’all in real time . . .
but fascinating links BT, thanks !
a day without cephalopods is like a day without sunshine
That is absolutely amazing. I detest spiders. They really creep me out. Amazing defense mechanism there, though.
The natural world is way cooler than anything we create.
What’s the cake of the day, cbl? I understand you were baking one for a neighbor a few days ago.
Oldnslow knocked me out of our Saturday night card game. 4 hours in. Called my $25 all in (he was the big stack, about $130 in front of him) with a pair of sixes in the hole. I had a suited ace-ten and caught an ace on the flop.
He rivered a 3rd six. I kind of wanted to kill him.
A little garlic, a little lemon. Perfect.
good morning Ms Molly
was going to suggest the mylar strips… oh well :/
one of those fake owl (pref. w/ swivel head) is supposed to work as well.
a suet feeder might distract ‘em.
I too, am agile and in good shape, but two falls the last three years ( I’m fine) scared the *&#$^& outta me.
Take care
Oh stop. I just had breakfast and that sounds so yummy even at 9:45 a.m.
I wonder if Olive Garden has takeout? (Yeah I know, that’s not real Italian but they do a nice calamari.)
My calamari story: A decade or so ago, I refused to eat it. My sole experience with calamari had been at Red Lobster, where the preparation was similar to deep fried breaded rubber bands, only tougher and not as flavorful.
My favorite restaurant had a calamari appetizer. Pan fried, in a little olive oil and lemon juice with a couple turns of black pepper. I refused to even consider it. But as I spent time there, it was obvious that they were selling a LOT of squid. And it SMELLED good. And it SOUNDED good as it came sizzling out of the kitchen. I tried it, and I cursed Red Lobster for ruining calamari for me until then.
It’s now one of my favorite foods. If you haven’t tried it, ask yourself: Do you like shrimp? Do you like scallops? If so, you’ll LOVE calamari.
Boxturtle (Deepwater squid are inedible, due to ammonia in their flesh)
They do have takeout :) And they do usually do a well-prepared calamari!
I think the fake owls are supposed to scare away pigeons and squirrels, too.
When I lived in MI I was a few blocks from a McDonalds and used to drive by it fairly often. They had a fake owl at the top of the roof, and it was always surrounded by perching pigeons. So I figured that wasn’t a solution after all.
You have to move it a couple of times a year :) Otherwise the other birds catch on and ignore it.
Spiderman vs Venom for a 6 y.o. boy is up next
here is link to Princess Cake for his 7 y.o. sister
Princess Cake
a photobucket link, hope it works :D
I’ve never killed anyone over poker. Only time I was ever tempted was when my Kings over Jacks full house lost to four threes.
Boxturtle (B*****d intentionally declared two pair and let me reach for my pot. Then he said “of threes”)
Another traditional way to eat squid/calamari is in some sort of tomato sauce. I had that once, and didn’t care for it much.
My intro to calamari was in California. Maybe was Carmel. We went to a well known seafood restaurant for dinner, and there was a HUGE wait, so we were shuffled to an outdoor patio and were able to order appetizers. We ordered fried calamari, and even my hugely picky daughter liked it so well that when we were finally seated for dinner she ordered that for dinner, too.
I’ve loved it ever since.
I would’ve come across the table and choked someone out. That’s just me.
(Dad busting me out cost me $50. Only one player left on the table beside us, guy had $8 left. 2nd place in that game pays $50. I could’ve just hung around another few hands and taken my money)
*grumble grumble shoots Dad the bird*
Those are adorable! That little girl must have been awed and excited!!
Wish you lived closer. I have granddaughters who would LOVE a cake like that!
Every second of this hour-long SportsCenter that isn’t about the Seahawks/Redskins game is about the BCS Championship tonight.
So effing lame. I guess it might be time to turn the TV off.
I will probably be the only person in South Bend NOT watching the BCS game. Of course, ESPN bought all the rights through 2014 so only those who have, or can find someone/someplace who has, ESPN, gets to watch.
I’ll be rooting for the Irish, but I detest football and wouldn’t want to watch the game if I was paid.
I’m amazed that the game isn’t on ABC. It will be the most-watched college football game of the year. I wonder why the Disney/ABC/ESPN family is allowing it to be off-network…
I’m back but have to share my calamari introduction.
Back in 1987, I took off for the Northern Arizona forests and camped by myself with my two dogs. Was coming off a messy divorce(thank god no kids) and I was looking for some meaning.
Camping next to me was an extended Korean-American family who invited me to share their calamari. By the time the meal was over they had adopted me somewhat for the next two days. Great memory.
Elbow and knee pads along with a helmet are recommended, but it is actually quite easy to control one’s speed and direction. The sail over the skater’s head near the end of the video is the stall position, facing into the wind the skater can stop. Three sticks, three wing-nuts and bolts and about 9 x 9 ft of reinforced clear polyethylene and a small roll of poly repair tape and you have a sail.
Can you ship one to NE Iowa for my 9 year old Peanut?(just kidding)
but that IS a WORK OF ART.
Nope. ESPN bought the exclusive rights. They aren’t even showing it on ESPN’s website. Lotsa grumbling here.
NBC owns exclusive rights to Notre Dame (regular season) football games, but we have a local NBC affiliate, so home games are available. But the only way to watch the BCS game on TV is on ESPN. I suspect lots of bars and even (I heard) a church with TVs will be showing it.
thanks ! I am having soooo much fun. she loved it.
a lot of it is easier than one might think. reg. cake mix w/ box of instant pudding + 2 extra egg whites (they’ll all think you’re Martha) and then bake skirt in some oven proof bowl, invert and decorate with just some plain ol frosting and little decorations you can buy right in the cake aisle. poke hole in inverted bowl cake and stick ol Barbie in there :D
baking is kinda science-y innit ?? :D
How did they prepare it? Wouldn’t have been fried, I suspect, in a camping setting.
That seems like it would be fun, too. I love the crowns!
My daughter’s two girls dance ballet. I can envision a really spectacular ballet cake.
I believe we’ve established that any yummy recipe is automatically on-topic for ALL Over Easy’s, not just Monday.
Boxturtle (A shame there’s no bacon in the recipe, but nothing’s perfect)
As I recall through the haze of 26 years it was served with a tomato based sauce along with pasta, but I am with you on the fried calamari, now my favorite.
(No good seafood reataurants within 75 miles:(
I started reading the bluewombat Book Salon about peanut butter while I was on the exercise bike waiting for Over Easy to appear. It is amazing what people combine with peanut butter. But I’m not sure about bacon in cake.
I have a magnet on my fridge that says “there is very little that cannot be improved with the addition of chocolate. But if you don’t think chocolate will work, consider bacon”
Boxturtle (I guess this is a chocolate situation)
Bacon Jam I made this summer – groovy on burgers, meat loaf, baked potato, omelettes, etc.
recipes all over the internet – :D
I watched an episode of Iron Chef America last night. The challenger kicked Bobby Flay’s ass. The challenger’s dessert course was beef fat ice cream with a beef fat sugar powder, pork crumble, and dark cherries.
The judges were knocked out of their chairs. According to them it was one of the most incredible experiences they’d ever had with food.
Democracy Now (I caught the last few minutes this morning) was featuring a discussion on Steubenville, Ohio and the sad ongoing saga there. Anonymous was alluding to drugs, gambling and football tied together in an underground culture of illegal and shameful behavior and promised more info.
My HS has on its school calendar several dates where school officials are attending seminars on, “marketing,” of HS sports. Sheesh! This is education?
Professional sports culture in this country is imho, nearly as destructive to the national health and well-being as the gun culture and NRA leadership. No redeeming value, what-so-ever.
I cannot be the only person who likes seeing Flay get beat. Something about that man’s ability to back up his arrogance annoys me.
Boxturtle (Big Iron Chef fan)
Some towns have nothing other than high school football for entertainment. Steubenville is one of them. You can rest assured they’re trying to figure out a way to protect the program, regardless of the impact on that poor girl.
Boxturtle (If we can’t keep HS sports from becoming untouchable, perhaps we should end them)
I agree with you. I think the NCAA is one of the most monstrous organizations in America.
Prof Wolff (Thanks SoDrag!) explained in one of his lectures that professional sports are a form of slavery. I’d never looked at it like that before.
I think there are some serious reforms needed. The NFLPA winning life-long health insurance for players was a big step. More things along those lines need to happen.
Bobby is one of the best chefs on TV, if not in the country. He’s also a masochistic asshole, so there’s that.
I enjoyed watching him lose.
Morimoto is my favorite. I think if someone were to rank the chefs of the world, TV or otherwise, Morimoto would be in the top 5. THAT guy can cook.
None of the other TV folks would be in the top 20, I’m sure.
Amerigus has a diary up about it. And I’m sure I’ve seen it on Salon and/or Huffpo too.
UGLY. We think college sports are bad, but this stuff at the high school level is abominable.
I’ve eaten Flay’s cooking, and I must reluctantly admit that it was every bit as good as he thinks it is.
I’ve been to Morimoto’s in Philly. Perhaps I was there on an off day, but I found it pretty average.
Boxturtle (I’ll give Morimoto’s another try if I hit Philly this summer)
I’m surprised that Morimoto’s place in Philly doesn’t impress. I also recall reading somewhere that he does not have much to do with the American ventures that bear his name. Just menu design, basically.
If I ever get to Tokyo and eat at his place there, I’ll give you a review :)
The disappearing articles are standard NHK practice, although it’s been noted that troublesome articles tend to disappear somewhat more quickly than articles about, say, school sports writeups.
What a great selection of articles, Box Turtle. Thank you. I’m an ” applied science” person, so this is like offering a box of chocolates. I chose Vomiting Larry. Now I’ going off to order a colloidal silver machine because I freaked myself out.
EPU land, so I will say what I think.
David Dayan’s departure from this blog is killing me slowly.
I used to get high level analysis with my news. He is sorely missed.
I gotta admit it was the catchy name that led me to include that link. Sadly, it would appear that even I am not immune to clever marketing.
Boxturtle (Can Belching Bertha be far behind?)
I made a similar comment last week. Jane was quick to point out that Dan (DSWright) is open to suggestions, and if there are viewpoints or stories that we feel are being missed, we should point them out to him.
To this point, though – DDay on Twitter.
If you want high level analysis with my links, somebody is going to have to come up with more money!
Boxturtle (Slave labor. I don’t even get room & board)
Not only are you high level BT, you crack me up.
What I guess I am saying is DS is doing great, but I am spoiled. I go to nakedcapitalism more often now as well as Marcy’s if I really want to get into the weeds.
heh, quality on a blog? Shirley you must be joking.
/i keed
Stop calling me, surely.
I see you!
Demi!
How goes the novel?
Hi, there, latecomers and Left Coasters.
Took so long to read thru post, comments and just some of the links!
The controlld SQUID was interesting, as far as I was able to follow it. physics is hard./s
Love the bits on Peking Man, though, although I’m still not sure what was meant by “depressing” the hides. Scraping and other kinds of treatment of hides I’ve heard of, but “depressing?”
Vomiting Larry – LOL and EEeeek! (what’s a colloidal silver machine?) Scary. Another reason not to take a cruise, for sure. I had thought norovirus was a sort of uppper respiratory infection; whew. Horrible thought.
Skating – I love(d) to skate, too. Major social life in junior high, skating on weekends at the Collisseum at the Indianapolis Fairgrounds. Nostalgia. My skates have been lost, too.
How goes the setup of the law practice, tejanarusa? You’ve had some bumps, hope they smooth out for you!
call you? i haven’t even had you on your knees servicing me yet. don’t get ahead of yourself.
/very naughty
I’m lurking between working on a long To Do list.
Hi.
Lots of prep work, but moving forward, thanks.
Busy busy girl.
I suppose it depends on how long your lets are.
Oh, girly girl. I’m busy painting and cleaning. Getting there, tho.
It is fun to be naughty from time to time. The peeps here know that I sometimes can share that side of my whims.
No where to run. No where to hide. No reason to.
Oh, and if you and Ruth need to Move it, move it.
I heard this on the radio this morning.
Dance To The Music.
Still slow, more than bumpy, perhaps. Supposed to go interview some clients/prospective clients tomorrow at detention center. Will be my first trip there on my own time, so to speak.
Still coughing horribly, but feeling quite a bit better, so timing is probably good. Trying to get some laundry done (amazing how it piles up when you’re sick!), read files, rest in between.
We have actually been paid some retainers, but can’t transfer to operating/salary because little or no work has been done to earn it. The basic letters sent, stating “we represent so and so” and “do not deport so and so! because s/he has a defense to deportation”, that kind of thing.
I think the holidays slowed teh schedule. Even judges and law enforcement types take vacation around Christmas/New Year’s, and so dockets get filled early, takes longer to get non-court stuff done, etc. We should have plenty to keep busy in a month or so.
Kind of you to ask, molly.
Fudge. Legs!
hah! I was wondering about that one…
Are you drinking lots of water? Are you slurping chickie soup?
I hope you are feeling better sooner.
Heh. not as much as I should be. Sleeping most of all. Seems to have helped. Some tea with lemon and honey.
I have an excellent recipe for a chicken soup with kale for colds, etc., tha I have made, but when I’m sick, don’t have the energy to make it. whaddya gonna do, right?
i confess: i hate cleaning. hatehatehate.
my ex used to beat me, for any number of “offenses” but cleaning was his favorite. think julia roberts in that weird movie where she had to make sure the towels were hanging at all the same level. yeah, been there, done that.
so cleaning and me: not friends. these days, i pay someone else a fair wage to do it for me.
demi, ruth wants you to know that i have, however, been an excellent cleaner of her microwave unit and countertops. so there. /pulls pigtails
Don’t blame you, even without such a hideous history. (shudder)
For purposes of clarification.
Cleaning = doing some long over due laundry. Hardly changed my clothes the whole time we were out of town. Clothes don’t come off in freezing weather. And, some dishes. I’m no Betty Home-maker. Not by a long shot. Same jeans for a week, here.
And, my theory is a clean desk is a sign of a chaotic mind.
Sayin’. I have different priorities.
One hour nap done, so back to finishing off the desk.
