Not sure I like the idea of you descended from me, either
Greetings!
In view of the near record setting snowstorm that is not at all related to global warming (Al, put down the cheesecake), some items of interest:
Did you ever wonder just how a weather forecast is made?
Those models are going to have to change, I think. We really don’t know for sure how melting arctic ice will effect the weather. We aren’t entirely sure just when we’ll get an arctic basically free of ice, but it could be as early as 2016. This summer set a record for ice melt.
We aren’t the only ones getting hit. Tornado, in Italy, on NOV 28!
And Down Under is roasting. To the point of having to add extra contours to maps.
Otoh, we may have banned CFC’s in time. Ozone hole seems to be on the mend.
And a case study in Toronto points the way to a 70% reduction in carbon.
Mar Rover drill success. We’ve hit bedrock. Finding that water existed is kinda old news, gimme something alive! And I’m still waiting for my pony!
Here on earth, we sampled the Kermadec Trench, which goes down some 32,000ft. Among other things, a cosmopolitan rattail! Ya gotta love that name. This is the same area and the same team that gave us the supergiant amphipod
A study of the earth’s core via seismic waves may show an extinction level event forming. *sigh* Yet another method of being wiped out we have to worry about.
Some of the weird ways we survive and study Antarctica. We’ve found life half a mile deep under the ice! Still no word on if the Lake Vostok cores are good.
Bees took a beating again this year. Yale researchers think it’s at least partly due to antibiotic resistance. I remind you of this study and suggest you buy your honey at the farmers market.
I missed this when it came out, but found it while wandering through the above. Honey Bee repair wax a weapon against cancer? Apian Duct tape has many uses, it would seem.
The Large Hadron collider will shut down for maintenance and upgrades soon. Just as well, the scientists have tremendous amounts of data nd will need time to sift through it. Despite the general acceptance that the LHC has detected the Higgs, the CERN team was always more cautious. They’re saying we should know for sure by mid year.
Don’t forget to enter your kids in the 2013 Creation Science Fair, held in the Twin Cities. They claim there were 60 entries last year. Here’s their thoughts on the Mars rovers.
If you believe in evolution, your multiple-Great grandmother eats bugs and looked like a shrew.
Flying Squid. No, I’m NOT making that up! And they’re FAST!

Thanks, BoxTurtle, not sure the shrews would appreciate the comparison with some of our grammies. But bees wax cures all.
I think the expression on the shrew’s face says it better than I can.
Boxturtle (Starting to get grumpy about the limited options for photos at MyFDL)
Find a good one at Wikimedia Commons that’s public domain or share-alike. Download it and ask Kit to help you put it into the post.
But you’ve been batting 1000 (is that good? don’t follow baseball) so no complaints!
Oo! That’s an option I didn’t know I had. I really want to be able to use Nat Geo photos. I’d have used that flying squid photo.
Boxturtle (I think batting 1000 is good, but they never let us have bats in football)
I sent an email early in the OE days with Kit’s contact info, so you probably have it. You probably could use a National Geographic photo with proper attribution. But there are LOADS of photos at Wikimedia. Another source is Photos Public Domain.
That honey article is very interesting! I use almost no honey — the cracked wheat bread I make calls for a couple of TBSP — but I will look for it at the Farmer’s Market next time I need it. Great info!
Good Morning, Other BT,
Very nice job, again. I realize that the photo is of a shrew, but I couldn’t help seeing it and thinking…
I Miss Ratfood and Bob.
G’Morning All, Glad to see such cheerful fonts. It’s fairly yukky here in my corner, cloudy/cold by our standards, after a beautiful week last week. Not spring yet, obviously.
We had a lot of rain yesterday, but that’s stopped and it’s very windy. Warmish, though, for NW Indiana this time of year, 35º now. “Significant” lake effect snow later in the week. UGH.
Hi ya, Bev.
It’s looking like spring around here. Lots of trees are flowering and the bulbs are blooming. Tulips, daffodils, hyacinths. Pretty.
Have you noticed plants blooming in your ‘hood?
Here there are buckets up to collect sap on the maple trees, but it will freeze again later this week.
Apologies for the off topic so early, but I wandered over to Charlie Pierce’s to see if he had anything up about the Pope (I’m sure he will), and found this guest post:
Saint Patrick Cashes In at White Shoe Firm
A longtime San Francisco friend posted a photo of daffodils in bloom in his yard last week.
I have a few up a couple inches, but no buds. They are just in front of the exhaust pipes from my furnace so it must be warmer there.
I used to use no honey at all, many moons ago. Then I got some for a recipe I was working on and I started to find uses for what remained after the 2tbsp the recipe called for.
Tea. Stir fry. BBQ sauce. Basically anything that used sugar or such, I tried honey. Generally, it worked.
I use less white sugar now, that’s probably a good thing.
Boxturtle (Wonder what the wild population in my area will be like this year)
. . . they done lost they minds on twitter – prolly another three hours before the first non pope tweet
Good Morning Box Turtle and Firedogs -
No blooms that I recall, but has been getting greener. Last week
really felt like spring…beautiful. Some were even complaining about the heat.
Pope Benedict is resigning.
Spring is Here! Woo-hoo! 50+ degrees, sunny, and expected to be that way for the rest of the week. Big windstorms expected today, but that’s it.
Boxturtle (forecasts this time of year aren’t much good beyond 48 hours, though)
Lori ghost freaks me out.
Rick needs a vacation.
Enjoy….Life renewing itself. My birthday is right at the 1st day of Spring….How good is that? I bet it was a cold day when
I arrived, however.
The phrase “to spend more time with his lawyers” comes to mind. I think he’d have been indicted in Germany if he hadn’t been made Pope. There are those who think avoiding that indictment is the reason he was selected.
Boxturtle (if I’m Germany, I’ve got paperwork dated March 1st)
Then you should have been at the Book Salon;) you may want to check it out. I thought it was very interesting, including some
comments about TX…..
March 21st? Mine’s March 30. Once in a while Easter falls on it. Oops, and then the Easter eggs break. :)
Yeah, that was right out of left field, wasn’t it? What if he’s NOT hallucinating?
Boxturtle (Don’t assume the writers won’t go there)
The red pointy shoes go back into the closet.
I don’t tweet. What’s the consensus? Other than he’s a rat?
Got a linky?
Good morning pups.
Been reading Yves Smith’s newest serial investigation on The OCC reviews of customer harm. If your blood pressure is ok and you have a couple hours I would highly recommend the whole series.(Probably her next book)
http://www.nakedcapitalism.com/
It is a comic book series, after all…
But… I think it more likely that Rick’s just losing his mind.
I’ve thought for a year or so now that they’re preparing us for Carl to lead the group. This just seems like another step down that path.
Wait!! What?! Nazi Pope is resigning?
I didn’t know Popes could resign. I guess my Papal history is sorely lacking or something.
I thought they had to kick the bucket.
I’ve been reading Joe Firestone’s (Letsgetitdone here at FDL) series on Platinum Coin Seigniorag at New Economic Perspectives. Another series that takes effort cuz I’m an econ dunce!
And Krugman was excellent on UP yesterday, as was the whole show!
Yesterday’s thread; or Book Salon at top of the page.
Yup. Officially, For health reasons. Somewhere, JPII is shaking his head.
Margaret theorized that something ugly is about to surface on Attaturks thread. I think she’s right.
Boxturtle (Always the cynic, especially where organized religion is involved)
That’s cuz the last time one did was back in the 1600s, I think.
20th actually. Does that make you a Pisces? Can’t recall.
not so much a consensus as a footrace for jokes (and jokes about Pope Jokes)
his first tweet appeared just 9 days ago
just yesterday, we watched Mea Maxima Culpa: HBO Doc on the Sex Abuse (an abjectly weak term) Scandal – rec., rec., rec. !
Good girl for not enabling. :)
(oldnslow had shared a link for someone at PUAC, when it was right in the sidebar and I told him that if he keeps doing that, the person would never figure it out for themselves.)
Good morning all. Thanks for the postnhost BoxTurtle.
If I had my way that
Fucking Assholepedophile enablerpope would be in front of what ever court has the most power. What ever country its in.I’m an Aries. Ram Tough.
It is nice to have a spring birthday. :) Rebirth and all that.
That was my first thought. Something criminal is coming to light, and Nazi Pope wants to hide behind his health before the prosecutors show up.
Got it, thanks :) I’ll read through today.
No doubt he took the choice of resigning instead. We’re civilized these days.
I don’t consider myself a cynic, not by a long shot, but that was my first thought too.
One doesn’t have to be cynical when there’s plenty of evidence.
On the other hand, why not help someone find the reference? We don’t all notice every single thing on every page. That’s not enabling, it is just being kind.
One birth just isn’t enough for some people.
he’s actually safer as Pope – leading me to speculate Soldano or someone within that circle has pushed him out
Yeah, whatever.
As a nonbeliever, I obviously don’t follow the Pope, but I had read that he’s become increasingly frail, and had to be helped to walk sometimes. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, as they say.
You may get that wish. At the least, I think you’ll get to see the Vatican having to publicly protect him from criminal charges.
However, if the reason really IS health, I might suspect there’s something really serious to cause a resignation. Meaning he may go before God before secular courts can get to him.
Boxturtle (If the Vatican protects him, does that open them up to even more civil damages?)
I can break into The Circle of Life song, if you’d like.
(Can even provide the piano accompaniment.)
Were you bad again? Awwwww.
Nope. Just seeing things differently than someone else.
By the way, BoxTurtle, one of the things I like about your Monday science linkfests is the stuff I read on the sidebars of the linked pages. Leads off into many interesting discoveries of things I’d probably never know about otherwise!
Pope John Paul could barely function and stayed.
I find more than a few of my links that way. I have 3-4 starting points and from there I just wander around and snag whatever interests me.
Whenever you see a fairly old link, that’s probably how I happened upon it.
Boxturtle (Either that, or couldn’t find a current Squid link so grabbed an old one)
Don’t let facts get in the way. Ha.
Things gotta get done, thanks for good company.
I found all sorts of foodie items when I was researching for that nutrition post a couple of weeks ago. There is just SO MUCH stuff out there that it is nearly impossible to keep up.
In the “olden days” (before the Internet) we could be blissfully ignorant. We didn’t know what we didn’t know. Now we have at least an idea, and could spend our days reading and surfing. Most of us don’t, but…
You are in fine spirits today. :)
(Me too. My son’s team won their only game in the season finale, and my wife is getting her Total Gym today after a fun birthday yesterday)
Everyone is physically, mentally and emotionally different, and tolerance for pain is vastly different. Who knows what he is suffering? He’s obviously not going to tell us! (Not that I can find a lot of sympathy for him.)
I am in a pretty good mood today.
Congrats on the win. If you’re only going to win one, the finale is a good time.
Happy Birthday to the birthday girl. Don’t those gym things take up a lot of space? Where do you put all of your keyboards? That’s me being funny.
I think we need some trolls on Over Easy. Why don’t we have any trolls?
Maybe I’ll write a gun control post tomorrow. That would bring the trolls.
The ghost of Southern Dragon keep them away.
Boxturtle (probably the only thing that could do so)
My contempt for those serial child abuse enablers knows no bounds and,
since I am a religious man I will pray they get their just reward
somewhere in Dante’s circle.
You go, Kris! I’ll troll. Except, um, we may pretty much agree. But you’d bring ‘em out fer sure with that!
I am pretty careful what I say because most of my neighbors and friends are Catholic (this is the home of Notre Dame, after all), but I really get annoyed when I drive past the nearby Catholic church and it’s big white cross out near the road with a broken red heart and “Mourn for the aborted children” on it.
I’d love to sneak there in the middle of the night and paint over “aborted” and replace it with “molested.” But I guess I’m not a vandal at heart.
That would be its, not it’s. I can haz grammar?
In my house we have two trumpets, a large upright piano, an acoustic and electric guitar, and electric kids keyboard.
(When Jim is happy he is singing. Music is darn important at chez clausen) :)
I’m having trouble finding topics to write about lately. Nothing in the news is really stirring my passion. Gun control is about the only thing.
This is what showed up at our house on Saturday.
We had plenty music going this weekend. :)
Do you sing in any kind of choir or music group, Jim?
I find find myself seeking solace among my friends at Over Easy more than I can face the news of late.
Hang in there Kris. Your posts always reflect your latest thoughts on whatever subject. You all are doing a great job.
(maybe its time to review a few of SD’s old posts for material? He never failed to inspire and motivate me to be a more compassionate human being)
Wow! Das ist schoen. (That is beautiful)
I bet you had your place rockin.
On the science and space front, we can’t overlook this feat.
I sing in a very professional church choir with people I have sung with off and on over 40 years.
I solo at weddings and funerals. (mostly I drive my family nuts singin along with Tony Bennett or Frankie S. on Youtube) :)
Professional players replace the whole Yamaha keyboards often. Individual keys can fail. Youtube offers easy instructions. We’ve had two keys fail on our YP120.
(I taught myself piano tuning and was in demand for that profession 35 years ago. Was told I have a great ear for it.)
Ya. Oh yes. Moving furniture all around. We actually are moving Everything. Putting the tv and sofa in the front part of the LR so that the new piano will have the inside wall on the other end. Lots to do, but I love mixing things up.
The really fun thing about it is you can play up to 4 voices at the same time. Playing around with all the features had him sitting there most of Saturday and Sunday. But, he’s very thoughtful about using the headphones for some of the time.
Good morning nonquixote. That was a cool story and video.
This one is brand new, so hopefully we won’t have to worry for a while.
Seventh grader and her dad. Nice.
How the heck did I miss that?!?
Boxturtle (Think that rocket would hold a teletubby?)
You had a rant bubbling up a couple of weeks ago. Is that ripe yet?
When my then six year old wanted to play piano, I was certain about never getting a clunker that needed new pins or strings (coils rusted to the pins, dried out pin blocks) and felts in various stages of decay from moths or mice or wear. Plus, one person could carry this thing around. I have a couple boxes of reclaimed ivory someplace around here, as I restored a couple old baby grands back in the day.
I was working backstage at a chamber music competition last spring and had the delightful opportunity to chat with the piano tuner, who explained a bit about how it is done. Fascinating combination of skill and a good ear.
I’ve stifled it. I’m sure I could get myself worked up to it again, but it’s not worth it. That rant would’ve fallen on deaf ears.
I’ll figure something out. Maybe I’ll let Lexi write my post for tomorrow :)
Might need more than one weather balloon and don’t those creatures always travel in a group? They could sit facing each other and watch their own live flight telecast.
That rant would’ve fallen on deaf ears.
Well!
And the human ear prefers a tone that is stretched slightly sharp into the higher registers and slightly flat in the lower, moving from the center in each direction.
I belonged to two “very professional” church choirs in the last 20 years — they sang some wonderful music, not at all the traditional church hymns. Of course, these were Unitarian churches, but we did quite a bit of difficult classical stuff. I love to sing, but unfortunately age has taken a toll on my range, and probably my voice quality too.
Thanks BT, fine post, again.
Back to a couple of political projects of a very local nature, two meetings later this afternoon.
Cheers
Hey, my daughter did a guest post, why not yours?
I confess I’m having a bit of trouble thinking of something for Friday too.
Interesting, nonquixote. It is a skill AND a talent, for sure. Turned out my current choir director (who is the Dean of the college, too) uses the same piano tuner I spoke to, and he was grumbling (only half seriously) about how much he had to pay the guy. As a professional musician himself, I know he knows and respects the abilities of a good piano tuner.
The History Channel just told me that most toilets flush in the key of E flat.
I have those low GPF toilets, and it took awhile for me to get used to the sound of their flushes. It’s more like a strangle/choke sound than a rush of water as in the traditional flush.
My water bill went down noticeably when I installed them, even though I live alone. The impact would be much greater for a family. I have 2-1/2 baths (don’t use the upstairs bathroom much unless I have house guests). 1.28 gallons per flush is a LOT less than a traditional toilet.
Write about failed activism and why it failed. You can start with the marriage folks, go to the gays in the military folks, and end up with the women in combat folks.
Boxturtle (probably a lot of overlap amongst those folks)
It’s free for all, write about anything except squid. I own squid!
Boxturtle (when in doubt, write about Snooki)
Was trying to get back to work, just got off the phone.
Most of the work where I live was for pianos that needed a lot more work than just tuning. The couple of professional pianos were usually dealer maintained.
I had to get people to agree to a disclaimer saying tuning was a set cost, but replacing strings, replacing tuning pins, etc was an extra charge. Still have my set of forks and the tuning hammer, assorted rubber wedges and muting felts. Something I should bring to a dealer or to ebay, except I have tuned a couple of hammered dulcimers, harpsichords, etc., for the occasional person.
You can have Snooki too. I have no idea who Snooki is. I suppose I could Google, but I don’t think I care.
I’ll come up with something. But I have new appreciation for people like Dayen and Greg Sargent who write multiple posts every day.
Tell me about it. I think I’ve got the easiest Over Easy to do, and it’s still effort to find a decent set of links. I think I’d be bats**t crazy in a month if I had to keep up with Dday’s posting schedule.
Boxturtle (Don’t want Snooki. Too much stuff penicillin won’t fix out there anymore)
Don’t try so hard to dazzle us with volume of links you provide or that you need to keep on topic.
Sometimes you gotta turn to your readers, open the diner, and say what’s new with you?
We are at 100 comments again today.(But 8 are mine :) )
Seriously, creative insight sometimes gets depleted and you all are doing a great job at Over Easy.
Oh, I’ve mostly posted on topics rather than a bunch of links. They can be conversation starters, even if we wander off topic. but I like the informality here that allows the conversation to go where it will.
And I see that I got the magic 100! W00t! I think I’ll retire to the sewing machine while my luck is holding!
See y’all laterz!
I am absolutely *smitten* with the shrew pictured above. My kinda animal.
When I was a kid, my mom had a sewing machine. EVERYBODY on our street had one, though not everybody had a TV.
When Mom died, there was nobody living in the family who knew how to use that machine. None of my neighbors were interested in it (this was a top of the line machine when she bought it), none of my friends were interested. My sister had the same response.
It eventually went to the Salvation Army. They had someone from another time who could use it.
Boxturtle (can’t remember the last time I saw one outside a museum)
I must be a direct descendant. Heehee.
I wish I could have used the actual drawing of the ancestral animal, but I couldn’t find it at any approved site.
So you get a generic shrew with a snarky expression.
Boxturtle (If only I could find a squid with a snarky expression)
So you get a generic shrew with a snarky expression.
Oh, we have enough of that here sometimes, I think.
Are we going for a new and different tone for the morning thread?
I’d prefer no troll baiting and I’d prefer that people understand that we’re all smart adults and don’t need no lecturin’.
But, of course, the tribe speaks.
By the way, I would add this to the news…
Not I. The snarky expression was intended to work with the caption on the photo.
okay, I admit that when I’m putting together my posts I sometimes think of myself as a professor in front of a lecture hall.
Boxturtle (I also sometimes imagine myself as Superman and…Oh, never mind)
Please don’t take it personally. It wasn’t intended that way and I apologize if I wasn’t specific or clear.
Like I can criticize for not being specific or clear!
Boxturtle (well, I could, but I’d be laughed at and not taken seriously)
You are fine just as you are. You may play professor while putting together your Very Fine, and sometimes Front Paged, Monday Science posts.
(I meant I prefer not to be lectured about nuanced points of intelligence and comprehension by others in the comments.)
But, Free Speech and all.
Jimmy,
I wanted to tell you that on Saturday, Chris played a bunch of different kinds of music. Classical, honkeytonk, rock and roll. And, yesterday he got out the hymnals and played a variety of hymns that he had played at church. I got to singalong. :)
You’re Lutheran? We probably don’t sing the same hymns, but maybe a few in common.
Come into my lair and let me introduce you to my sewing machine. I’ve sewed since I was in my 20s, with a long hiatus when my kids got older and I got involved in their activities, and then went back to college and then to career. I just took it up again about 10 years ago, sewing for my grandkids.
And I just discovered something I’ve done incorrectly and have to do over, and it won’t be an easy fix.
*Grumble, mumble, curses under my breath*
Tomorrow’s post is done :)
Good on ya, Kris! I’m looking forward to it.
I have a germ of an idea for Friday. We shall see if it takes root.
Off to errands, then back to fix my sewing mistake on a shirt for my granddaughter. Grumble. I was nearly finished with it, and now…
ERK. I just looked out my side window and saw a possum (I think) stroll by the side of next door house. Ewwww.
It must be yours, because I assume the young ‘un is in school.
Is it a rant?
As ye sew, so shall ye rip.
Boxturtle (Thanks. I’ve been waiting decades for a chance to use that pun)
No rant. I don’t think I’ll ever pollute Over Easy with that.
If I want to rant in the future, I’ll do it in a separate diary.
Ummm…maybe not a possum. Gray, long nose, longish bare rat-type tail. But according to Wiki, possums are nocturnal and arboreal, and this one was wandering through the side yard in broad daylight.
I wonder what it was?
LOL, and I am gonna have to rip a bit to fix this. Phooey.
OK, peeps, back to it. ;-D
I think that’s a wise choice, considering that we continue Dragon’s Morning Legacy here.
(You’re just fine too, babe.)
How about a post on pop culture? Or history like you did last week? Variety is the spice of the blog, after all…
Ooop. Looks like it’s already fin. I’m sure we’ll enjoy whatever you post.
Possums around here are very common during the daylight. I would be willing to bet that’s a possum.
Boxturtle (you only get rats that big in NYC or Detroit)
Demi,
Sounds like you were having a grand old time. My taste in music is eclectic and varied. (I get bored easily)
The director of my choir is from my alma mater and we sing some very beautiful pieces.(She is now directing junior high students in the musical The King and I
‘Hi folks. Onmyfancy phone , which isn’t opening links. : (
I kinda like the shrew, but. I’ll check out NatGeo too.
Iif you’re curious about the Pope resigning and who might get elected in his place , Peterr has an informative post up. The RC Church has been such a force in history that major events within it get more attention than perhaps it deserves today. Then again, 30 years ago I would nnot have predicted it would still have so much political power in this country. (See abortion)
Hi again.
I’ve been fortunate enough to see that on stage several times.
This is my favorite song from King and I.
I feel the same way, but we know that they have Deep Pockets.
Hi, demi. Such a sweet song.
Yes, the church has deep pockets, though maybe a lot of it is in real estate and objects.
I have such complicated feelings about the Church, having been raised Lutheran, being interested in medieval history (which means you gotta learn about the Church, as it was integral to everybody’s life and to governments all over Europe in those times), and having been, during my last marriage, a convert. Dunno what I am now; an academic-ish observer.
As to the assets, too–I love beauty and beautiful objects, and I’m in awe of so many of the ancient churches and their decoration, including the less-decorated Spanish Missions right here in San Antonio. And of course, there have been, and still are, so many lay and religious (nuns, monks, priests, etc.) who believe in the true message of Jesus to love and care for the poor and powerless (some of whom I’ve known), often in defiance of the institutional church and its top officials.
I don’t have a lot of sympathy for this Pope, except as another human being who is no doubt old and weary.
Having studied the Church’s history, I kind of get how they see eveerything as very very long term, and figure whatever the current issue will pass, and the Church will still be around.
Which is why I don’t think they’ll ever give on women priests, and probably not on abortion either. Things like contraception, I have some faint hope for, but then, I would have thought that would have happened long ago. I cannot believe we are now arguing about contraception again, and not just with Catholic church, but fundie protestants, too.
Uh-oh, did I just rant? Hit a coupla my triggers and off I go!
Ha! I knew you were a romantic person(in the artistic sense*g*)
I grew up listening to Oklahoma and The King and I on our old stereo player.
If I am not mistaken(went to law school with bmaz), I believe the Catholic Church imposed several legal strategies to avoid paying abuse cases the most egregious of them placing their real assets(they own lots of property) in trust for “future congregants” to avoid attachment.
No wonder the LA diocese had to rob from the dead.(Dead Souls is one of my favorite novels by Gogol.)
Oh, I wouldn’t consider your comment a rant at all.
You touch on very good points. Well said.
Can you imagine how much the vatican’s libraries and art works are worth?
And, I totally hear you on many priests and nuns working tirelessly for the poor and homeless.
Are you familiar with Homeboy Industries?
Started by Father Greg Boyle.
I’ve seen him speak several times. Once at MEND and once at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena. They’ve clashed with the Feds before.
Anyway, right on comment, tejanarusa.
Who else plays the flute and allows keyboards to take over?
My sister and I acted out the scenes from many of the musicals, in the livingroom, listening to the stereo.
DaddyJimmy just enjoyed it so much.Yes. I saw your comments at several threads, including Peter’s current one.
I have to tell you, my late aunt worked at the Arch Diocese in downtown LA and knew Mahoney. That’s six degrees I’d rather not be associated with. :(
I gotta admit I take religious or should I say “issues of the Conscience” very seriously. As a somewhat tortured artist myself I take personally the pain caused by charlatons of any stripe or persuasion.
Nominated to be the new Pope:
https://twitter.com/_SecurityCat/status/301000597631549441/photo/1
I am happy to help the Over Easy crew find pics for their posts if you let me know in advance. Wikimedia is a great source. You are right. Also, BoxTurtle are you using a Creative Commons search on Flickr already? That turns up a wealth of pics.
I looked up muskrats and they aren’t what I saw. Definitely not a rat. At least the size of a cat or small dog.
Fixed my sewing boo-boo, now off to buy Valentines for my 8 grandkids. Wonder if the college freshman wants one sent to his dorm room? Hee hee. I’m toying with the notion of sending the older ones e-valentines. In fact, all but the youngest have phones that could probably handle an e-greeting, and the older of the younger ones (they range from 19 to 7) might get a hoot out of an e-greeting.
Thanks, Kit, I knew you’d help out! You da bestest!
As we reap, so shall we sow.
That, I believe. Whether it’s judgement, or karma, or just plain feeling lousy when we do something wrong, we usually end up paying for our sins. That’s what I believe, based on life experience too.
Oh, my goodness. Look what I did.
Hi Kit!
What are good hours for you and how long do you need if I point you at the photo I want?
I ask because I normally find myself looking for the photo Sunday evening.
I’m not waiting until the last minute, that’s when I scheduled the time.
Boxturtle (You believe me, don’t you?)
Er, didn’t mean for my comment to be mocking in any way toward yours. I posted without reading recent comments.
I’m so confused.
I didn’t see anyone saying you were mocking.
Maybe I missed something.
Why, thanks, demi. ; )
Yes, I know of Homeboy Industries. One of the best “social programs” in the country, as far as I can tell.
One always worries these days when a priest is involved, that something will be uncovered at some future time…which is a terrible shame for the good people tarnished by the bad ones.
We still have a Catholic Worker House here; did some volunteer work with them when I was younger. New city regulations regarding homeless (related to a city intiative to take over and centralize allhomeless services) have restricted their traditonal judgment-free provision of services. Oh yeah, and very recent gentrification of the CWH’s location, not long ago desperately poor and undesirable to anyone with money, has also negatively affected them.
I’m still hoping Dorothy Day will make sainthood; though it may need a more liberal pope to do it, and given that JPII and Pope Ratzi have appointed most of those who’ll elect the next one, I have little hope of that happening.
YSD Whaddya think? Would a kitteh pope be a liberal? (curmudgeonly, prolly.)
Msmolly, definitely think you should send some e-Valentines. Let the kids show them off; tell their friends what a young and hip grandma they have!
(hope the frogging – ripit, ripit) wasn’t too much agony. The amount of ripping and fixing I have done in my life is what makes sewing less than a way-to-relax hobby for me.
I’m old-fashioned; I sew when I need something I can’t afford or can’t find. (like dresses with sleeves for my flabby old arms. sigh.)
The three oldest all sent me happy birthday text messages for my 70th. So I guess they assume I’m a hip grandma!! LOL. My 14-y/o granddaughter posted a thank-you for her Christmas check on my Facebook page, complete with photo of what she bought with it!!
I’m going to send regular cards to 3 of them (youngest) and e-cards to the rest! Too fun!!
I posted an irreverent picture of a pope cat after some serious talk of religion. It was poor timing.
Speaking of Kit… He gets a shout out in my post tomorrow :)
Liberal, I don’t know. But… his name would be Pope Pius whatevernumber and he would be very, very judgemental. On the plus side, hooman birth control would likely be encouraged.
BoxTurtle YGM!
Well this was a totally non-functional little epaulet at the shoulders of a knit shirt — strictly for decoration, I almost left them off. So then I put one on the wrong side of the shoulder seam, and the sleeves were already in, gathered at the top, and seam trimmed. So a challenge to move the epaulet, but it’s done.
Way TMI for anyone who doesn’t sew. Pretend I’m a troll and scroll! Hee hee!
“Pretend I’m a troll and scroll! Hee hee!”
LOL.They’ll just scratch their heads. You couldn’t be a troll!
I just saw this response. “he would be very, very judgmental.” Heh, I’m sure you’re right. Just imagine the stink eye from a kitteh pope. No words would be necessary.
(completely OT: does anyone else who learned to type on an actual typewriter have a hard time remembering NOT to leave two spaces after an end-of-sentence period? Sigh. I try…can’t look old!…but it’s very hard; it’s in my kinetic memory. See above)
LOL. Proof that your cat is out to get you…

Oh, that IS funny. I couldn’t get it at first…what do these charts/lists that I can’t read prove?….then….LOL.
(my favorite stinkeye kitteh pic evah)
That’s a good one, and new to me. Thanks for the laugh.
Oh, that. Pish posh. No problemo :)
I know the story of humans coming from tree shrews, but I doubt that blue whales did.
These tree shrews evolved after the dinosaurs became extinct … … ?
Was that when God created them? From the dust of the Earth? If Evolution did it, their ancestors must have been here during the dinosaur days, right? Either that or the gods or the aliens started them/us.
But some people say the alien connection came in quite a bit later:

And here’s one more nice Evolution song.
but I doubt that blue whales did.
I looked it up.
That’s a classic. Cute little thing.
And then there’s this. Bwahahahaha.

Zombie Apocalypse!
This goes with Monday Science, right?
Lightning Strikes St. Peter’s Dome on Day the Pope Resigns
Now, that is trippy.
But, I don’t know what it means.
Maybe it means Damn Skippy!
Whoa. I just tweeted that.
Sorry I am late, thank you for the Monday post, BoxTurtle, as always, love the photo and the link.
and the links!
I knew it was being said, I just think there are other possibilities. Some of the larger dinosaurs were warm-blooded, according to many scientists for many years. http://www.sfgate.com/science/article/Dinosaurs-were-warm-blooded-new-paper-reports-3668655.php
Crocodilians appear to be evolving into warm-blooded beings as we speak:
Most cold-blooded animals have two-chamber hearts: In and Out.
Warm-blooded animals have four-chamber hearts: In and Out of the body, then In and Out of the lungs, for re-oxygenation.
But Alligators and Crocodiles, though cold-blooded, are just barely that: Warm-blooded animals maintain a stable body temperature by the 4-chamber/re-O2 scheme; but cold-blooded animals [who can't do that trick] must allow their body temperatures to fluctuate with air temps.
Alligators and Crocodiles have four-chamber hearts, but an open tubal blood vessel near the hear allows the blood going to and from the lungs to mix – a little. Give’em a few million millennia and a comet impact or two, and see what they can do.
I just think there are other possibilities.
An open mind is a wonderful thing.
Thank you, Norman.
I hope you have a peaceful evening. :)
You too, nice to see you.
