What is hiding under the ice?
Greetings!
In the search for life elsewhere in the solar system, scientists are settling on Europa as the most likely location . The next mission to arrive in that area is Juno in 2016, but it’s not really there to study Europa so anything we get is going to be incidental. The European space agency is planning a launch in 2022 for a mission to Europa that would study sites for a landing. NASA scientists also have a probe planned, The Clipper Mission, but funding is uncertain and not in the current budget.
This makes the research into the sub-glacial antarctic lakes even more interesting. Still waiting for a confirmation that the Lake Vostok sample is good, since there is concern that the Russian technique could have contaminated the sample. Until we can figure a way to successfully sample here, we should probably hold off landing on Europa.
In Florida, hundreds of hunters netted just 68 pythons. That’s about one hatching from one snake. Florida swamp hunters are clever people, they’ll figure out the best way to hunt these things. But it may well be that we acted too late and the snake is not even controllable. Which means that they’ll spread until they eat everything, the population will crash, and a new equilibrium is established.
I missed this first time around. It seems that the Zebra Mussel invasion in the Great Lakes has enabled another type of mussel to invade deeper waters and do basically the same thing. I think we’re gonna have to accept a mixed ecosystem in this day of globe trotting and come up with ways to support local habitats in spite of that. And accept the fact we’re gonna lose a few species. This is the safest method we have of controlling Zebra mussels so far.
On the subject of invasive species, how about predatory flying jumbo squid invading California waters? The Humboldt squid is one of the few squids confirmed to have attacked (and eaten!) humans.
Iron based catalyst for fuel cells. Right now, we use expensive platinum. Could drop the price of fuel cells to the point where they’d be usable in some forms of transportation, though I think they’ll still be too large for cars.
We’ve wondered for awhile what produced high energy cosmic rays. The Fermi observatory has produced evidence strongly supporting the idea tha supernova remnants are the source of at least some.
Fukushima hasn’t really changed, but here’s an update on Chernobyl. Almost 30 years later, we’re seeing a recovery. But still some problems.

Good Morning, Boxy
Well, I’m definitely staying away from Florida. Pythons taking over? No thank you.
Flying surveillance bugs? Get out. This sounds like science fiction.
As for the flying jumbo squid invading California, I don’t actually go into the Pacific Ocean anymore, so I guess I’m okay.
Thank, Turtle. Just more excuses to stay inside.
Thanks, BoxTurtle, jumbo flying squid sounds yummy, let’s put them on the menu and watch them become endangered.
Good morning, BoxTurtle. Lots of linkys to follow this morning! Thanks!
Thanks, BoxTurtle, jumbo flying squid sounds yummy, let’s put them on the menu and watch them become endangered.
Hmmm, comments are behaving funny, now saying I already said that, and no, no I didn’t.
Indoors we have giant flying cockroaches. Make a choice.
Then there must be a echo in here.
Hi Ruth. Happy Presidents Day.
I was attacked by the echo!
I like calamari, and the article says they make great calamari steaks. (I like the rings myself.) Let’s put them on the menu!
But, I don’t. :)
Do you really have cockroaches? Get the snakes in there. Will that work?
And the Pythons are winning, to judge by the hunt results. We probably only culled the slow and stupid, thus strengthening the population. :-(
We also gotta worry about being charged with destruction of government property every time we step on a roach.
I couldn’t jump on that predatory flying squid link fast enough. It was like the Goddess made a link just for me!
Boxturtle (Waiting for the NRA to insist that fishing boats be allowed to mount AA guns)
Snakes and human-attacking squid and cyborg beetles? Europa is looking more attractive by the day.
Thanks as always.
Cockroaches and snakes first thing in the morning…Ewwww.
More coffee, please.
Giant flying cockroaches are just hiding right now, they’ll be out later when you come back from the beach. We had them in VA and in TX.
They already eat those things in Mexico. I’ve never tasted it, but it seems popular enough to keep a large fishing fleet employed in the Sea of Cortez. I guess we’re just not eating them fast enough.
Boxturtle (not sure we could prove any squid endangered. They seem to be doing just fine out of our reach)
Is it the weather, the plants you have, what? Are they just inside, or outside too?
Right? I know what you mean. Can we stick with raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens? More my speed, I think.
I ran out of time before I could find a decent spider story. Hopefully, the roboroaches will cover the arachnophobes.
Boxturtle (Everybody gets a free helping of the willies this morning!)
How about pythons, sliced and fried. If we could get a gourmet python craze going, maybe we could get Florida cleaned up.
You’ve never had calamari? You don’t know what you’re missing! It’s not the best I’ve had, but Olive Garden has a decent calamari appetizer. Try it!
I don’t mind squid or snakes, but I don’t want any cockroaches, TYVM!
Tastes like chicken?
Good morning everyone.
Thank you for the post BoxTurtle.
You’re so thoughtful…sorry, Im with Demi;)
I have a friend who has an aquarium full of Madagascar hissing cockroaches. Huge, and they actually rear back and hiss LOUDLY if you startle them.
Boxturtle (I sure hope he talks to his shrink about that)
And I’ve eaten snake as an appetizer, years ago. Tastes like chicken.
Good morning, BoxTurtle! Happy President’s day. And thanks for the update.
Cockroaches are usually observed indoors, but I suspect that it’s because it’s where they give us the willies. Probably indoor food sources are their choice, too.
But I am not an authority.
Oh, I’ve had calamari in several forms. I love it. Just never Humboldt calamari.
IMO the best way to cook it is pan fry, with olive oil, black pepper, and a squirt of lemon at the end.
Boxturtle (And a beer)
Good morning firedogs. Thanks for the post and host BT.
Interesting link on Chernobyl.
I tasted rattlesnake at Girl Scout camp a billion years ago, and yes it did. Kind of.
I guess if I was starving, I might try python. But, maybe not squid.
They’re also in the supermarket, but it’s sneaky to call them calamari. Friends taught their kids to eat ‘escargot’, never told them they were munching snails.
To be fair, the house I live in is only 11 years old, and although I’m no Martha Stewart, the house stays fairly clean. I imagine the farm house is fairly old. Do you know when it was built?
I’ve eaten sweet&sour rattlesnake. You could tell it wasn’t chicken, but I’m not sure how to describe it. I would cheerfully eat it again.
Boxturtle (Here are some suggestions for python. )
I bought one once (frozen) but never got up the nerve to cook it. Finally threw it out. I much prefer the rings breaded to the calamari steak.
The farm house is maybe 70 – but it doesn’t have cockroaches.
Kris has his trusty smoker. Smoked python?
Hi Boss! How are you liking Over Easy so far? We’ve had about 6 months, I guess.
Boxturtle (requiescant in pace, SD)
Okay, I’m confused. Where inside is the roach landing strip?
Flying fish that throw a mean punch, but a drive down the river and you can fill your boat.
Good Morning people.
Fish fertilizer, food for happy cats?
VA and TX had flying cockroaches.
Got it. I think I’ll have another cuppa.
Back to my idea for DIY industry of making cat food from mouse, at the risk of repeating myself.
New Orleans, also; looked big as shoes. Occ. they would huddle in the streets near the curb and so thick you could hardly, if at all, avoid them. Obviously about the climate…but really
giants ;(
We actually started in mid-November, BoxTurtle. Just seems like we’ve been here a long time!!
No doubt having a taste for Cajun, too. But I hear you don’t know cockroach until you’ve tried Panama, where my bro lived for awhile.
And a fine job you all are doing indeed.
Good morning, msmolly and firepups.
How in the world did I miss that link? It’s perfect!
Boxturtle (I’ve eaten carp. I greatly prefer cod)
Then spare me….mine’s bigger than yours, huh. Surely do not
miss them.
WaHoo! Frontpaged!!!
Boxturtle (Does happy dance!)
Morning, Jim.
I think Jane’s showing up once in a while is a great testament to the early crew.
Yep.
Okay, so I’m impatient and can’t count or tell time.
Boxturtle (Not really news)
Congratulations….I guess Jane likes you; she really, really
likes you….We do, too.
The invasive species that is sort of waiting in the wings to potentially wipe out every other natural fish species in the Great Lakes. Not to worry.
(Whips out cockroach) Well, li’l lady, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.
Okay, you’re right, enough.
*blush*
Boxturtle (think she’d shoot me down if I asked her to dinner?:-) )
We had our monthly quota portion of Great Lakes Salmon last evening. PCBs and mercury being the ppm dosages recommended not to be exceeded.
To win not = a good thing. The only good thing about the NO critters was our “bug man” who came once a month….we loved
the guy.
You say you’re a CEO?
Can I go? Can I please go, too? Im sure we can
work this out…..
I was really only pointing out how we’ve become “the morning crew” in a short time. It does seem much longer than 3 months, doesn’t it?
I eat a lot of salmon. The fish guy (do people still call them fishmongers?) in the Farmer’s Market has fresh wild Alaskan salmon when it’s in season, and I buy it frozen from the supermarket when it’s not. I love salmon!
We were being the morning crew before Over Easy, actually.
CEO?!? what did I do to deserve THAT? I didn’t say greedy or unethical.
Boxturtle (or Republican)
I see ‘farm grown’ too, that makes me feel a little less uneasy.
No problem. You’re buying!
Boxturtle (hmmm…maybe I AM a CEO!)
Or even incompetent. But fumbling on time and place is a promising beginning.
O great….and I thought you were a gentleman.
But Im out for a bit….Have a lovely day, you Dogs.
Yeah. I have a whole new respect for the science writers who must fill a column every day.
Are the evening folks known as the evening crew? I’m so rarely on the lake after 7pmEDT or so.
Boxturtle (Sometimes I wonder how many people are actually clicking on Over Easy)
I have friends over at eschaton who comment on posts here over there, sometimes it’s a running conversation at both blogs.
BT,
I have not made it through all your links but if you did not catch this I’ll add it in. One of Marcy Wheeler’s best posts ever:
http://www.emptywheel.net/2013/02/17/colleen-mcmahon-the-covert-op-that-killed-anwar-al-awlaki-was-illegal/#comment-517217
Her work on this post is historical – and that is not bull. She should win an award for this insightful, amazing work that goes to the heart of our Constitution.
I just got done “going in the weeds” with Marcy and was gonna recommend but you got here already. :)
Good morning here, too, BT.
There is at least one geologist who is still (or as of December, 2012) convinced that volcanic activity, not an asteroid, is what killed off the dinosaurs. Some of my commenters here think it may have been both, sort of acting in tandem, but have not produced any recent reference.
I was not kidding with my comments over there that her work on that post should go over 500 shares and tweets. It needs to go viral…globally.
Oh, you want to take a 3 day weekend? Welcome back. Here are 194 emails to sort through. Surface for air once in a while or you’ll die.
/FML.
I’ll match your Wheeler alongside this excellent work on American Exceptionalism by Glennzilla.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/feb/18/american-exceptionalism-north-korea-nukes
Nnnaayyyygghhh!!!!
I can’t even keep up with one thread reliably. Multiple threads at multiple sites!?! I’ll have to get my cats set up with accounts.
Boxturtle (I’d set up the dogs, but their opinion always matches the person closest to the treats)
There is fish farming essentially in large tanks and fish farming in large net pens in the ocean. Both are fed fish pellets sometimes derived from other wild fish species, antibiotics and some other chemicals. Disease can be prevalent in ocean pen raised fish simply because of the numbers of fish confined in a given space. Check out country of origin, etc, before making your fish consumption decisions.
Marked for later perusal. Marcy’s posts take quite a bit of time to digest compared to other posts of the same length.
Boxturtle (Thanks!)
Thanks for that link JClausen.
Be sure to share EW’s piece. Tell friends. Tell friends to tell friends.
He’s got a good case. Did the impacts set off volcanos? Were the volcanos just a coincidence? Given our margin of error is in the 10′s of thousands of years (at best), they might be unrelated.
We’ll be able to tell, just need to find the right core sample.
Boxturtle (I’d look in the Aussie outback)
Thanks. Like all proofs, the current one will be rolled some time in the future, anyway. Overpopulation is my totally off the wall one.
All These World Are Yours Except Europa.
Attempt No Landing There.
Use Them Together.
Use Them In Peace.
That is SOOOOO 12 years ago!
Trivia question: how much mass would have to be added to Jupiter to get it to ignite?
Boxturtle (I remember that now. Surprised Kris didn’t get to it first)
Enjoy the read. I realize it was not a science link. Sorry I went OT. But, thought it is so important it needed to get a link posted.
You have to be careful of farmed fish, unless you know and trust the fish vendor. Some fish are farmed in small pens of unclean water, while others are farmed in open nets with lots of fresh water. I try to avoid farmed fish, but that’s probably an overreaction.
Thanks much, klynn. I’ve bookmarked it to read later.
You cannot go OT at OE. Everything is on topic, except personal attacks, statistical analysis, and diet plans.
Boxturtle (And we’ll make allowances for he last two)
:)
Thanks!
Good morning msmolly,
See my @76. and this ishy-fishy warning.
And beside that in a sane world Marcy Wheeler would be considered a National Treasure. (caps intentional)
Good morning all and thanks for the postnhost
FrontPagerBoxTurtle. The farmed salmon diet is off the table!
Thanks for the links, Boxturtle.
I just finished watching the video on how to make your own cyber insect. It was creepy overall and especially near the end of the project: the guy uses a glue gun to stick the circuit board onto the cockroach’s back and adds the reassuring words ‘the glue is not that hot. It will be fine.’
This after he had punched holes into the exoskeleton with a needle, trimmed off the cockroach’s antennae and inserted silver wires into the cavities. I lost track of the number of ice water anesthesia baths required. If it weren’t a cockroach that most of us might stomp to death in our kitchens, the video would be one of animal cruelty. In fact it still is despite it being a cockroach.
The power of the explosion of last week’s “Russian Meteor” has been estimated to be 20 times the power of atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
That was my thought as well, though it’s tough to feel sorry for a roach. Perhaps if we used politicians for the first series of tests, the 1% is going to want that anyway.
Boxturtle (We’re going to need to genetically modify those roaches before cyborging them)
Reminds me of the CIA’s multimillion dollar project: Acoustic Kitty which ended badly when the cat they had outfitted with an eavesdropping antenna was run over and killed by a taxi cab.
http://vimeo.com/21804385
All the more reason to stomp them out of existence in the future.
“He’s got … ”
She: an “uppity woman” named Gerta Keller who is merely a full professor at Princeton.
Earlier, they were saying about 1/2 the strength of Hiroshima. I think I’ll wait a few weeks for the experts to work with their data. 300kt seems awfully large for the amount of damage recorded.
Boxturtle (Wonder if the experts will converge on an answer or diverge)
by “them” I mean cockroaches, the insect kind.
Ah, I stand corrected.
Boxturtle (As an OE regular, I should know all about uppity women)
Oh. I was about ready to sign up to your plan. Cockroaches have their uses, lizards love them.
Boxturtle (Politicians are all hard to swallow)
This!
I think it’s probably time for a moratorium on funding DARPA. Too many juvenile sci-fi geeks seem to be managing the research contracts without consideration of consequences and ecological ethics. Roach-borgs with microcircuits-really bugging a building.
Too much useful stuff comes out of DARPA. Granted, it’s money that SHOULD go to a national lab, but the only way to get the GOP to support spending is to make it for war.
Boxturtle (Be it the war on Moslems or the war on women…)
Nothing that a bug spray, with microscopic magnets as an ingredient, couldn’t take care of.
I love the Chernobyl stories. I have mentioned before that I talked to someone who works with radioactive waste in Los Alamos about this, and it was explained that the animals have a short lifespan compared to humans, so while it is still very toxic for human exposures there, animals do not live so long and may not have killing cancers that take longer to develop.
That said, I find it interesting how many of our cats around here have had cancers in their short lives. Makes me wonder what the exposures for cats are, is it food, something they are breathing, or some other kinds of contaminants in our environment they are susceptible to that should be alarming for us?
If you’re not seeing it in dogs, I’m gonna guess the cats are eating radioactive rodents.
Boxturtle (I’m sure the GOP would say they were being killed by illegal immigrants, somehow)
I had a recent experience with a kitteh who died of a squamous cancer of the tongue which spread and eventually killed her. Vet said cats are prone to that sort of cancer b/c they wash themselves with their tongues. This particular cat had been rescued from a dumpster in Saudi Arabia which, her owner says, is very polluted due to the oil refineries. Eating radioactive prey would pro’ly contribute, too.
BTW, Barb, any developments on the fines thingy?
Late to the party as always.
Back in ’79 or so, I saw the solution for “the Iranian problem”.
Place a recipe for blackened Irani in the New Orleans times Picayune, and then post ‘em out of season.
Blackened Python? Any ideas?
That’s what took my cat; no SA connection. When I took her in, the vet did not rec even testing, the symptoms were so clear. Broke my heart; and she was gone in only a few weeks. But the vet
knew it almost at the time I had called for an appt. Sorry for your loss as well.
Recommended, of course.
I’m glad you pointed out that energy-producing Fuel Cells are too large to fit in cars. Many have the misconception that people will be able one day to fill up on Hydrogen. But the amount of Hydrogen that fits in a car is not enough to drive around the block.
Burning Hydrogen can cleanly charge a battery, if the Hydrogen was obtained in a clean way. But in today’s reality, it requires energy to generate the Hydrogen. No doubt steel parts would make it closer to financially viable than do the platinum ones. Closer, but, I think, still no cigar.
Awwwwwww frack. Just had some city slicker strangers eyeballing the neighbor’s property to buy in foreclosure auction. Looked the the gentrifying Oakland type. I tried to scare them off.
They could be very nice neighbors, you never know.
No problem, I wouldn’t be looking at properties where you live.
How’d you scare them away?
I’d tell ‘em the house was haunted because of a brutal murder decades ago. Flesh it out just enough to make them twitchy.
Boxturtle (Be nice first. It MIGHT be the world champion cookie maker!)
I went out in my pajamas. ‘Nuff said.
Actually…I told hem the truth about the property, that its been in foreclosure for years (since 2009 IIRC) and the owner has managed to stay. We like the current neighbor very much, though, and I feel very loyal to him. I don’t want to see the property sold to anyone except, we’ll, ME–and that’s not happening.
ROTFLMAO!! American Horror.
There may be some nasty energy in there from a painful divorce 5 or 6 years ago. I’d gladly buy the property if I had the money or the credit. It has a lovely garden, lots of fenced yard, and one of the best views in town. But, its interior is very rough. No central heat, missing Sheetrock on the walls, it’s a genuine fixer.
congrats on frontpage, BT! thoroughly enjoy your science roundups and the discussions inspired by your work.
Thanks!
Whew! Lotsa good links and comments today. That giant aggressive FLYING squid really gave me the willies. shudder.
I’ve read similar stories about the farm-raised fish…and it’s a reason I just don’t eat fish much at all. And I absolutely don’t trust the labels. Just because it says it’s wild, or even says it’s a certain species, doesn’t mean it is.
Flying cockroaches in TX…yup. I get a few every summer. I tend to scream when they startle me and fly at my head. Gets the cats up and hunting, though.
Whoa, what happened? No comments after 2:33 in the afternoon? That’s strange for OE.
