“McNamara represented all of those superficial qualities of brightness, intelligence and education that are so revered in our culture. One of the many things we can learn from this McNamara experience is that we’ve got to stop revering these superficial qualities of brightness and smartness, and bring up a generation which thinks in moral terms, which has moral intelligence, and which asks questions not, “Do we win or do we lose?” But, asks questions, " Is this right? Is it wrong?"
These are "right on time" words from historian Howard Zinn, reflecting on the death of former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara who died this week at the age of 93.
Here is a Torah teaching ingrained in me from my childhood, which has cured into savory spiritual sustenance over time.
"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words which I command you this day shall be upon your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise."
Seems like ever since my high school days in the seventies we have been in a perpetual war. It pains me to say it – by in large we are a war like nation. Every July 4th ceremony I witnessed , saving the one at my church, strongly conveyed that patriotism equals war and the military. We are regularly bombarded with the accusation that anyone who questions the war mentality is a spineless, morally vague, unpatriotic liberal.
When Rabbi Jesus was asked which was the greatest commandment he referred back to the aforementioned Torah passage adding its sacred sibling, “Love your neighbor as yourself."
Howard Zinn continued his McNamara commentary, expanding it.
“Once you enter the machinery of government, once you enter the House of Empire, you are lost… Young people who may be thinking, ’You know, I think I’ll enter the government and I’ll get in there and I’ll make a difference.’ No. The people who made a difference are not the people inside the Pentagon….If people are going to devote their energy to making this a better world, they better not think of getting into that machine that destroyed people like McNamara and that silence them.”
Woefully, I am noticing this decay with Obama. From my standpoint once he won the Democratic Party nomination he began to take a marked hawkish turn. He brazenly asserted we can bomb in Pakistan any time we damn well please, and that we must escalate the war in Afghanistan. He has followed through on both.
War as a way of life permeates the minds of our children. Video games are primarily shooting galleries. Military recruiters are given carte blanch in our schools. Generals and soldiers are unquestioned as the sole embodiment of patriotism.
If we want to live in a country that considers war the way we now regard slavery diligence is the path. Diligently teach the compassionate use of power. Diligently convey that moral brightness undergirds all other intelligence. Diligently demonstrate that all people of the world are our neighbors. Diligently promote public service as patriotism in action. Diligently hold up the peaceful as American heroes.
Teach peace as the way of life, diligently.

What a wonderful, radical concept! A true, mind-opening, concept shift. Thank you.
Now to take the concept, hold it as vision, and live it . . .
Thank you! I am considering getting together a July 4th event in my home town of Austin, Tx. next year that will honor peacemakers as true patriots.

Chuck
we are indeed a war like nation
ike warned us in 1961 the future of america if we did not detune our military in peace times
there is big money for the few in our wars for profits
imperialism has a price ie bankruptcy of a nation
why not state it like it is: we americans are war mongers and dont have a clue we are
90% of americans did not know during the nam war who the viet cong were and we killed hundreds of thousands of them including women and children
now tell me how great americans are. go ahead tell me
in fact I am called unamerican for even stating such a thing
as for obama he knows what he must do if he wants to stay in office that is all I am allowed to say to be posted here
americans have no idea how the industrial military complex and the intelligence folks control this country
they even control the mass media
ie no stories on the mass media about winter soldiers
we are a failed nation living on borrowed time and money oh and printed money
I am moved by your passionate and true lament. It began with the American Indians and has spread around the globe. How the hell can we begin to turn this around?
Soulfully,
Chuck
I propose a different tack, which is to trust Barack Obama.
He’s in the hot-seat now and he’s going to risk appearing hawkish to our Progressive base, in order to do the right thing.
Afghanistan is not your father’s Viet Nam War. It is the war we ought to have focused upon instead of Bush’s Foll-Iraq. Clearly, to back off because war is bad will leave us open to harm from those who brought us 9/11.
I can see targeted special forces missions to get Bin Laden and terrorist training camps. The all out war has already killed scores of innocent civilians once again creating more enmity toward America.

Great piece, Chuck. I didn’t do it this year, but often I have preached this sort of message on the 4th of July Sunday. Contrasting Jesus’ message of “love your enemies” and “turn the other cheek” is powerful when juxtaposed with all the pro-military hoopla we see on that day. Needless to say, my congregations have not appreciated these sermons, but they do make an impact.
To say ‘needless to say’ is quite a commentary in itself. Part of me says I shouldn’t be surprised that most people cannot appreciate this (to me) simple truth. But, nonetheless, I have little capacity to understand what it must feel like to live in such fear places that it keeps one from understanding what to me was Jesus’ core teaching.
The reason these teachings cause such distress among many Christians, especially when presented on a patriotic holiday, is because it forces them into awareness of some fundamental contradictions between their faith and their worldview. It creates a cognitive dissonance, which is usually dealt with by getting angry at the messenger and declaring his/her message to be skewed – thus allowing them not to recognize and resolve their own inner conflict.
Thanks Jim! Since 2004 I have done “True Patriots, Heroes of Conscience” for the Sunday nearest July 4. I have honored people like Lt. Ehren Watada who refused to fight in Iraq. For the most part these services have been heartily received in my post Christian UU church.

Chuck
It’s also telling that Luke’s version of this dialogue segues into the parable of the good Samaritan. Given the enmity between the two groups (Jews and Samaritans), Jesus’ message is clear: Recognize the humanity of and befriend everyone (even those we count as enemies) for they are our neighbors. This kind of teaching not only challenges the Pentagon, it also flies in the face of “me-first, who cares about you” capitalism.
