People in New York and New Jersey are huddled in the cold and dark and apparently the US Congress cannot manage to vote for Superstorm Sandy relief before they go on their vacations.
Nothing I am about to say should in anyway suggest that I take what happened in New Orleans less seriously, but there is one major difference between the (unacceptably) slow-moving reconstruction aid in Louisiana vs. the Northeast in autumn and winter: the weather.
Today in New Orleans, it’s mid 50’s sweater weather. Nobody’s going to freeze to death there in homes that are without power. In the NYC metro area, it’s 24 derees at the hour I am writing this. People can die from exposure in that kind of cold.
John Boehner is so captive to the likes of Eric Cantor and Paul Ryan that he is refusing to allow the Sandy aid vote to come to the floor. Even GOP lawmakers from the Northeast are taken aback by this willingness to let fellow Americans freeze to death for the sake of politics. The New York Post quoted Rep. Michael Grimm protesting House Speaker John Boehner’s decision not to allow the vote for Sandy relief:
For the first time, I’m not proud of the decision my team has made. I’m going to be respectful and ask that the speaker reconsider his decision. It’s not about politics, it’s about human lives and human dignity and I pray that he understands that.
We just celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, an Executive Order that had no precedent. The most recent President Bush started two wars and spent gazillions of dollars on them without getting prior Congressional approval.
If Congress REFUSES TO DO THEIR JOB AND EVEN VOTE ON TIME CRITICAL LEGISLATION, then the President has ample reason to step in with emergency Executive Orders giving Sandy relief in a timely fashion. Congress has forced this on him by their own inaction. Further, he can force them to stay in session until they do their jobs and vote on a Sandy package.
How dare they vacation while their fellow Americans are freezing.
Because of redistricting, today is the last day that Pete King is my Congressman. It is also the first day that I am proud to have him speak for me. This is what he had to say on FOX:
No one even told us, the Speaker walked off the floor, told an aide to the Majority Leader that the Congress was finished. There were no votes and they come back and told us. Listen, I’m not taking this as personal offense. I’m talking about the thousands of people in my district, hundreds of thousands of people throughout the New York-New Jersey area. Within 10 days after Katrina, $60 billion was appropriated. Nine weeks after Sandy, not one penny has been appropriated. And let me just make this one point. These Republicans have no problem finding New York when they’re out raising millions of dollars. They’re in New York all the time filling pockets with money from New Yorkers. I’m saying anyone from New York and New Jersey who contributes one penny to Congressional Republicans is out of their mind. Because what they did last night was put a knife in the back of New Yorkers and New Jerseyans, it was an absolute disgrace.
Why does the Republican party have this bias against New York, this bias against New Jersey, this bias against the Northeast. They wonder why they’re becoming minority party. Why the they will be a party in permanent minority. What they did last night was so immoral, so disgraceful, so irresponsible. They’re supposed to be the party of family values. And you have families that are starving, families that are suffering, families that are spread all over living in substandard housing.
This was a disgrace. They are inexcusable.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but — what Pete said!

We are all from the ninth ward now.
I hope this injustice is remembered long into the future when the R’s come begging for NY/NJ money for their candidacy runs.
Great point about Bush the shrub setting in motion events that cost several hundred billion dollars, without paying for it.
Excellent point. The President has discretionary contingency funds appropriated in the budget that he can use just for that purpose. If there is a way around the debt ceiling that was reached on Dec 31.
Which makes me suspect Boehner of using the Tri-State area as hostages in his debt ceiling negotiations.
It obvious that the system is not about helping the people… it’s about helping the rich get richer… or even anyone get richer who plays capitalism from the top.
There are only feints to anything concerning people. The repukes are dead set on stopping any sort of *welfare* state… All they want the feds to do is war and policing… If they had their way everything would be privatized… roads, air traffic control… and much of the military… prisons.
Of course these delusional jerks like King do need to stay in office whether by bribery, nepotism, election fraud or simply lies and PR (propaganda)… If this jerk can’t bring home some bacon and in this case deserved relief and assistance from the Feds he’s not gonna hold onto his seat.
Of course where was the national guard in all this? Oh I forgot… in the ME protecting our freedom to freeze to death in an unfettered free market driven economy.
This is criminal and horrific. I am sick about it, I think of those people all the time. I hate the cold, and this kind of suffering is inexcusable.
Thank you for reminding us, Cynthia. This cruelty is unforgivable.
Damn it!!! Bastards are going to hold the people hostage to their ideological bull shit. Dammmmmm!!
I watched live as the reps from NJ and NY where angry about this and said so on the House floor. Are there warming centers for Sandy victims? How can we help?
I love it when Rs show their true colors. And why are they on vacation anyway – the holidays are over, everyone else has gone back to work and it’s not as if we don’t have any problems to work on.
I think the new cast of characters populates the place tomorrow.
Sounds like people are going to have to go through a couple cold winters.
How do you spell dastardly, despicable bastards???
Oh, never mind.
Nice of you to refer to them as “cas of characters” instead of what thye really are.
See my #12.
Definitely a disgrace from predictably feckless republicans.
So has our president rode in to save the day yet? Because not doing so would be at least equally disgraceful…
Not quite everyone, Twain, has “gone back to work” … in the true spirit of bipartisanship, a certain someone has departed to resume an interrupted “vacation”.

Just remember, however: The Republicans made him do it.
Also, who remembers that sign “The Buck Stops Here”? … and, for a moment, consider its current meaning … where do most of the bucks “stop” nowadays? Certainly NOT in the hands of “the people” …
Ah, well …
Thank you for the post, Cynthia, recommended.

On the reasonable level, there’s absolutely NO reason that this package should not have been voted on.
On another level, to see King ticked off because of his own tea party type of politics is priceless.
My family owns a house on the Jersey Shore that was extensively damaged by Sandy. Many residents of that town are right-wingers who had the usual array of anti-Obama and pro-Republican bumper stickers. I’d really like to go back there and tell them that elections have consequences, but I’m averse to fistfights.
LOL.
Pete King telling GOP donors in NE not to give to House GOP members? Wow, just wow.
I was very disappointed when King got rolled over 9-11 funds and we saw $ being squandered for pork barrel projects in Midwest and under populated areas that Al Q couldn’t care less about.
I think maybe Pete learned a lesson from that and may play some hardball for Sandy victims. I hope he does. I hope the entire NY/NJ/Conn/RI/ and other coastal state delegations band together and get tough on this.
B/C we are such populous states, we control a lot of votes if we can put regional interests and fairness ahead of partisanship.
Also, POTUS could make a legacy by seizing control of this situation.
Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind, Mr. King.
google Occupy Sandy and see what they need today. The needs/priorities change daily and they are very good about updating. They also have a “bridal” registry page on Amazon that is updated daily. You can ship a donation directly.
Occupy has done amazing work and they don’t get the recognition they deserve. Or the rock concerts. Yes, there are some warming centers. And some folks had hotel vouchers, but hotels are now asking htem to leave b/c of pre booked conventions
yeah, but they are not taking up any business for another 1 1/2 weeks at least, unless we make them
No Alan, it will take two years to rebuild. Easily and some of it is for infrastructure replacement that has to be engineered and designed first.
The important parts of this are for $ for homeowners to rebuild and they cannot hire contractors until they know the amount of the grant.
Once the bill is law and the grants are determined, folks can get started rebuilding their houses
I have a feeling they may be finding that out today. I wonder how many will still be GOP when this is over?
I think it depends on who’s left standing. The Rs are really taking a beating right now and they deserve it. When you let the lunatics run the place, this is what you get. I’m smiling.
I’m not smiling. My fellow NY’rs and NJ’rs are freezing and living off donated meals.
This is not a partisan issue
TY for the response/info.
No, this is not a partisan issue. Nor an American issue. This is a human issue. It’s starting to separate the humans from the sociopaths, imo.
I can’t stop thinking about the people trapped in their high-rise apartments with no power.
Thank you for posting, Cynthia.
oh, but it very much is ‘partisan.’ in the sense that a lot of thug reps are going home and telling their peeps in flatlander states, ‘see, i taught those new york jews a lesson! they can’t have your money! let em eat ice.”
and if you think i’m kidding, i’m not. there’s an irrational hatred of anything associated with ny or nj in the inner parts of the country, as well as the south. “they deserve it, for letting all those blahs and homosexuals and jews run around free instead of locking them up like good christians would” is pretty much the attitude in many areas.
Please let me know if this is the wrong place to put this:
Occupy Sandy still needs your help http://interoccupy.net/occupysandy/
The Amazon Occupy Sandy wish lists(using the amazon wedding registry) are also still open and being updated with what is needed:

The hub at St Mary’s school in Staten island needs:

They also need Comms works, Demo crews, Canvassing crews, demo tools, cleaning supplies and cleaning products.
This is why the relief is being delayed. The longer they can put it off the more desperate people will become and the easier it will be for the congresses friends ,the “vultures”, to swoop in and buy them out for pennies on the dollar.
My guess is the land speculators are lobbying harder then the reconstruction contractors are.
When there are profits to be made humanity goes right out the door for these snakes.
Great post! Recommended
racism, homophobia, and fear of people of no/different religions trumps anything most of the time, in the minds of the people deluded by those things. it’s important for progressives to always remember that. the programming goes that deep, and these are people who will chew off their own fingers rather than vote in favor of funding for SNAP that keeps their children fed and alive.
i used to be amazed by it, but now i just accept it.
What you said!
What is the status of Sandy relief being forced through bankers? cf this Black Agenda Report commentary from a month ago that relied on Occupy/Strike Debt report:
Was Congress going to fix this, pass this, or make it worse?
Thanks Cynthia,
I’m with you on the outrage here, but of course who would think that other humans in the NE US might be in a daily life and death struggles for survival when the weather is so nice on the island. This situation and immediate mandate on gun control could be remedied and there is no excuse to NOT take executive action immediately.
Our government is a criminal enterprise. It’s heartbreaking that poor, old and infirm people are left to fend for themselves in the wake of Sandy in the middle of winter. I’m horrified.
Thanks DWB … a nice, tight comment with some ?’s that need to be asked.
