Street Art – Flicker Creative Commons
Remember those whatever became of things. We see them still sometimes but they’re usually about people and things we didn’t care about originally. Well here is one of mine.
What ever happened to …….
Street Art. Creative murals and artwork on the sides of buildings and barns and sometimes even houses. Some were very good and took quite a bit of talent.
Music you could sing along with and dance to. Songs with a message that was inspirational rather than just angry or depressing. Where the “music” did not drown out the words.
Politicians with actual passion. Like the Kennedy’s or Humphrey or Sam Nun. Now we have people who are more like the Harvard Law Professor whose class you have to suffer through because it’s required and he/she is the only one who teaches it.
Our sense of humor. Humorists like Stan Freberg, Mort Saul, Lenny Bruce, George Carlin. People who were actually witty and smart and informed. Our ability to laugh at ourselves rather than at others while taking ourselves far too seriously.
Craftsmanship. The desire to actually do a good job and pay attention to the details and honing ones skills.
Creativity. Most things now seem like a mediocre version of what has gone before.
These are but a few of the things we seem to have lost.

It’s like the whole country has gone into a major depression.
Yes, it is. Glad you mentioned craftsmanship. One of the reasons I enjoy vintage junk so much is that it is solidly crafted. Sad to see how furniture is made now, for example.
Hardly anyone seems to be doing precise arts anymore either, such as spinning or weaving, although canning is coming back a bit.
When it is all about making a quick buck, quality and creativity are sacrificed. Very depressing.
Did I show you this? Vintage John Deere bicycles. Saw them at a yard sale:

Craftsmanship is not a corporate value. It is an individual’s sense of pride, reflected in their craft. It’s still out there, you just have to look closer.
Sense of humor is not a corporate value, nor a conservative possession. They have a mean streak, which serves the same function to them.
Street art is not profitable.
Politicians with passion generally want to change the status quo. This is not a corporate policy.
” They have a mean streak, which serves the same function to them.”
I once said to someone, “Stupid.” She replied, “Yes. But it’s a mean stupid.”
That is very cool. I did not know John Deere made bicycles.
I have been looking for and photographing street art here in Cleveland but have found little. And what I have found was technically good but mostly not all that creative.
Got a ticket for trespassing on the RTA grounds shooting some I did find.
There used to be a lot but that was 40 years ago….sigh.
Sam Smith did a good essay on The Coporatising of America. The problem is NOT that politicians – Obama in particular – are controlled by corporations, it’s that they have BECOME corporations. That they think and act like corporations. Cold and heartless and technocratic.
I am still interested in that Saturday Art, so if you find some street art…Had a migraine this Saturday, unfortunately.
I’d like to add one other thing.
What ever happened to…
Common sense ?
The disappearance of these things signify to me a culture in sever decline.
Here are a few I took.

Under the Detroit/Superior Bridge in Cleveland
very kewl!
I love these! Especially side graffiti small, honey locust wall bird, wall fruit, and under the Detroit bridge. Really beautiful images.
Thanks. I can of wonder though…just how many people here even know they exist and appreciate them.
Silly question.
Not my pics but the actual art work.
In Atlanta, “the public-private partnership” creates “street art.” The city provides the public spaces and corporations commission the artists to provide the “art.” The most memorable result was several years ago when multi-color pastel cows worked in an unremembered (at least by me) medium appeared in random places scattered around the city. Good for the artists who got paid but not good for the soul.
If you have a good view of some railroad tracks, the taggers produce some nice work on rail cars occasionally.
Lots of rail here and most easy to get to. This guy I think has shot nearly everything in Cleveland already…LOL

Thanks. I love the tagging art. I like it on trains especially because of the mystery of who did it, where, and when and that it’s on tour in a way.
I’ve seen and read about collections of photography of derelict structures, particularly here in Atlanta – one of the reasons they film Walking Dead here is that much of the city already looks post-apocalyptic. I’m intrigued by it. Thanks again.
