Galadriel

And now at last it comes. You will give me the Ring freely! In place of a Dark Lord you will set up a Queen. And I shall not be dark but beautiful and terrible as the morning and the Night! Fair as the Sea and the Sun and the Snow upon the Mountain! Dreadful as the Storm and the Lightning! Stronger than the foundations of the Earth. All shall love me and despair!’

She lifted up her hand and from the ring that she wore there issued a great light that illumined her alone and left all else dark. She stood before Frodo seeming now tall beyond measurement, and beautiful beyond enduring, terrible and worshipful. Then she let her hand fall, and the light faded, and suddenly she laughed again, and lo! she was shrunken: a slender elf-woman, clad in simple white, whose gentle voice was soft and sad.
’I pass the test’, she said. ‘I will diminish, and go into the West, and remain Galadriel.’ “

This one concept has been has been illustrated in literature from time immortal, it seems. Of one group group or person attempting to bend their will or belief or agenda toward another. And the reasons and justifications as a numerous as the attempts.  In all cases these attempts have failed miserably. Some disastrously.  And others with “to horrible to contemplate”. Simply put authoritarian control simply does not work. Regardless of the intent of those who would impose it. Nobel or not.

Cassiodorus in his latest diary went into this with the “green dictatorship”.

We have seen this through out history. Even in a supposed democracy like ours, eventually you wind up with one group attempting to impose it’s ideas and will on another group. Whether it is the right or left, Christian or Jew or Muslim or some other belief. The results are the same.  It either collapses completely or results in violence or both.

Right now this country is as split on any issue as one can imagine. With 30% right of center and 30% left of center and the rest any where from extreme right to extreme left and refusing to budge either way. And Any attempt to push or force their beliefs or feelings on this only makes them more resolute. The last congressional impasse should be more than sufficient to demonstrate this. As Tareheeldem points out in OhioBarBarian’s latest diary, listing some items that I would agree with for the most part:

Here’s my list of what the minimum demands of that movement should be.
1. Medicare-for-All that eliminates deductions and co-pays and includes long-term care
2. Increase of minimum wage to $15/hour with no exceptions. Eliminate the discrimination against restaurant and farm workers and the legal dance over “exempt employees”.
3. Stronger overtime law that forces time-and-a-half for hours over 20 hours and double-time for hours over 40 hours. And forbids employers from penalizing workers who refuse to work over 60 hours a week.
4. Financial transaction tax of $1 on every $1 million of financial transactions.
5. Eliminate the payroll tax cap.
6. Strong regulation of greenhouse gases.
7. Large infrastructure budget for public transportation, public privacy-enabled communication, public schools, community clinics, medical school debt payoffs, medical school student grants.
8. Reorganization and reduction of national security and intelligence community institutions to actually defending the interests of the US people and not being tools of transnational corporations.
9. Repeal of all laws creating secrecy within government operations and evaluation of how to handle the requirements that generated those laws within an open and transparent government.
10. Open meetings with web streaming required for Congress. The public deserves to see the legislative sausage being made so they know who is dealing what.
11. A clear constitutional amendment that corporations are not people (I really would like to end limited liability for corporate criminals) and money is not speech.

All well and good but demanding it will in my opinion avail you no more than a kidnappers demands would avail them. Eventually they would fail. For similar demands have been made in the past with the same out comes. More resolute opposition and failure.

In order for change to occur and be sustained, attitudes have to be changed. And in order for attitudes to change there has to be a benefit and motivation for each individual to want to change. It is a trite but very true statement. After many years in therapeutic recovery for various things and time in 12 Step meetings I can assure you of this.  I have seen people do an about face on their attitudes but not though force.

As Thoreau stated in his work on Disobedience, I heartily accept the motto,—“That government is best which governs least;”

A statement with which I heartily concur.  Democracy works best in small groups and situation. When it works at all. In his writings on Communities that abide, Dimitri Orlov goes into this extensively.  That it has to be a voluntary choice on the part of the vast majority individuals involved for a democratic community to continue to function in a way that they chose. The Amish are a good example of this.  Rumspringa where the young are then aloud to chose to be part of the community or not.

A central government should exist only to provide services to the country as whole but NOT to dictate ones behavior. What one choose to ingest or smoke or engage in sexually or what not. Private actions that do not harm others overtly in some cases.  All else should ideally be left to the communities involved. This would also include trade of any sort. If say a community wishes or not to allow a business or financial institution to exist in that community, it would be up to the community. Not any central government. This to me would be ideal.

You may say “Pie in the sky” but I think it is either that, or the kind of situation we have now. With fewer and fewer people decimating the planet to the ruin of all and the country more and more divided over petty unimportant issues. As the environment is destroyed.

OWS has shown that community action on a community basis is the most effective. A scenario the elites had to suppress lest it gain acceptance.

For those that do survive the ruin will most assuredly be forced to live in this manner. I would think that a voluntary change would be preferable though.

He is in great fear, not knowing what mighty one may suddenly appear, wielding the Ring, and assailing him with war, seeking to cast him down and take his place. That we should wish to cast him down and have no one in his place is not a thought that occurs to his mind. That we should try to destroy the Ring itself has not yet entered into his darkest dream.
