Barack Obama could learn a lot from studying Richard III.

Barack Obama, whose election was regarded as an extraordinary event in American politics, has embarked upon a campaign of reconciliation. In general, this is to be applauded, except when it comes to traitors.

Richard III came to the throne of England by a series of unusual events. (I, for one, do not believe the lies told of him by Sir Thomas More and repeated by Shakespeare, but never mind.) His reign was marked by several rebellions, most significantly one led by the Stanley brothers.

Thomas Stanley, 1st Earl of Derby
, and his brother, Sir William Stanley, were involved in several intrigues against Richard. Thomas was even married to the mother of the usurper Henry Tudor (later Henry VII).

Richard, desirous of promoting peace in his kingdom, released both brothers after a brief imprisonment, rather than executing them painfully as was the custom for traitors. The brothers promptly betrayed Richard at the Battle of Bosworth Field, ending the Plantagenet dynasty and ushering the House of Tudor.

Once a traitor, always a traitor! If I were Obama, I would sleep with one eye open and looking at Lieberman.
