On July 1, 2012, the oldest of the three 2012 Decorah Bald Eagles died tragically in an accident. The eaglet was only three months old, and was found electrocuted at the base of a power pole in Decorah, Iowa.
A small tribute seems hardly enough for this magnificent bird that we watched from the time it hatched to its first branching to its first flight.
Rest in Peace, D12.

Juliana Hatfield “for the Birds”
“I’d rather hang around with the birds.”
Yes, and thank you for sharing these lyrics, Things.
We recently lost a mockingbird this way on the pole right outside our window. How I miss that bird, with his daily upbeat playfulness.
There is so much we can learn and gain from birds, I think.
Thanks again.
How interesting that birds take precedence over people.
Next time I am coming back as a bird.
Cawse then we can chirp on a regular basis.
Chirp, chirp!
End of discussion.
Just left you a message!
C-S–
Thank you for the sad update.
The Decorah Bald Eagle diary was, as I remember, one of the first of your fine diaries, that I read. It lead to a discussion between us of our “pet birds”–your African Grey Parrot, and my little Cockatiel.
At any rate, it was truly a wonderful experience seeing the little eaglet’s nest, and subsequent branching. You have to wonder “why,” it had to be that way. I guess it’s simply the way of nature, as sad as it is.
RIP, indeed, little eaglet (D12).
Blue
Thank you for stopping by, Blue. Yes, very sad. The Decorah Iowa eagle livecam was turned off on June 30, because the three eaglets had left the nest. I assumed they were fine, but began to worry about how they were doing in the drought. Started looking around…and saw this awful news.
