This morning’s Over Easy is an addition to the first diary I ever posted at Firedoglake, with an update on our dumpster diving experiences during the holiday season.
WikiHow has an excellent article on dumpster diving technique, to which I only add: 1. Never dive a medical or hospital dumpster 2. Never dive a compacting or off-limits (ie, gated/not in the public domain) dumpster 3. Dive in quadrants. This way, you never have to throw anything outside of the dumpster in order to get at the contents at the bottom. 4. Double your configuration, like a cave diver, and carry two of everything (flashlights, wire cutters, magnets), except your wallet or money, which you should not take with you, into a dumpster.
Scrap metal recycle prices vary a bit from one junkyard to the next. The money scrap metals are copper, brass, aluminum, and non-magnetic stainless steel; junkyards want your scrap load sorted prior to reaching the scale. January is the best month of the year for scrap metal divers (scrappers) because Christmas is now a disposable holiday. Post-holiday Christmas lights are abundant, for example.
I am a baby boomer, born in 1960. Christmas was sacred and magical for as many years as I can remember until recently. We hand-made many of our own ornaments (remember felt, glue, sequins and styrofoam?) and saved everything from year to year. My mother kept our precious ornaments in the same box, each carefully wrapped in newspaper and saved. We saved our bubble lights and ice cycles.
That doesn’t happen anymore. Christmas is manufactured overseas, sold in the Big-box, and disposable, including all ornaments, lights, fake trees, nativity sets, and gifts, toys and clothing. We are losing our craftsmanship and precise arts as quickly as the Arctic melts.
People begin shopping on Black Friday, and get a tree up shortly thereafter. Late November/early December dumpsters may deliver insulated copper in the form of last year’s lights that have been inexplicably replaced by this year’s model, a few fake trees and even Christmas wrap, tape, bows, ribbon, lace and tags, still new in packages as though people are actually afraid to use anything from last year, God forbid.
December 26 through the New Year are generally cardboard box days, and although cardboard brings $60.00/ton at recycle, cardboard transport is problematic without a modified truck bed. After the first of the year, the land of dumpsters is most interesting and productive. Lights. Rejected presents, New With Tags. Fully decorated trees. Appliances, if new gifts replace the old, and even furniture, again if old must be discarded to make way for new. We have not been to the mall in years. Every appliance we have was retrieved, new, boxed, and never used, from dumpsters. Same with all of our furniture and all of our clothing. If you live in an area where people don’t take down their trees until February, you can vicariously celebrate the holidays for two or three straight months.
UPDATE:
The year after I wrote this, our local recycle center reduced the cash payment for all Christmas light strings and other plug-in cords by sixty percent, causing many scrappers to discontinue retrieving cords in lieu of collecting bulk magnetic scrap metal.
Last year we exchanged our truck for a motorcycle and quit scrapping. Our most lucrative scrap dumpster was related to infrastructure, and when the company itself began to recycle and disallow scrap dumpster divers, we made a decision to give up scrapping.
We are now entering our third consecutive year of eating from dumpsters. About 75% of our nutrition comes from dumpsters. We did observe what we believe to be an abundance of meat in the fall due to the sell-off of livestock during the exceptional drought season of the summer. We most often eat steamed vegetables and crock pot meals, with salads, abundant fresh fruit, and some sweets. We must purchase coffee and tea. We have been sick only one time, and that was after eating a fast-food meal inside a restaurant and not from a dumpster meal.
Our appliances, dishes, household items and many clothes now come from our own apartment complex dumpsters or curbs, during end-of-month move-outs. We are transitioning from diving due to great need to diving by choice, because we continue to believe strongly in the principles of reuse and living with less.
Years ago I began this strange, stigmatized hobby because of need, when I inadvertently discovered my real passion of looking for things that show sociological or historical trends and stories, so for me, the fun is in the urban archaeology. What media and social culture wants us to see is on the surface. If you want to know about the real world, look at what people throw away.

Good morning! Looking forward to reading this, C-S, and welcome to the lineup!
Good morning CS, and thanks for the update.
Morning! I remember fondly your dumpster diving stories. Now to dig through the post.
Boxturtle (Be careful dumpster diving around here. Coyotes love ‘em)
And a very good morning as well, msmolly. Thank you for the welcome. I spent an unexpected but glorious night in Chicago O’Hare, (Hilton, compliments of United), on my way back from seeing family in Seattle. By yesterday, the whole plane was like a happy family.
Thank you so much, Jane, very much appreciate the read.
My daughter would be interested in your comments about Christmas ornaments. She and her family have a lovely artificial tree (although I don’t like them generally, this one is very real-looking) loaded with ornaments collected over the years, often related to her girls’ ballet dance passion. This year I took them each a little inexpensive kit with the wood cutout figures of Santa and other holiday things, with colored pens and little pompons and they assembled them. They aren’t going to be family heirlooms but the girls enjoyed them.
Good morning, BoxTurtle. My current theory on coyotes coming out of their ordinary hunting areas (some reported attacks on horses, for example) is that they were pretty drought-stressed last season, and hungry. I haven’t seen them around dumpsters but I have not been night diving in quite a long time.
Yes, the artificial trees are getting to look very pretty. My elderly mother, who is no longer able to get up much, had a small one in her room, with a mini-wooden train car in it. Beautiful. I want to say the whole little tree folded, fully decorated, and fit back into a box.
I too read all of your dumpster diving diaries, with fascination. I have never passed a dumpster since then without wondering what I might find there, but the only “diving” I’ve done is to retrieve a couple of discarded boxes for shipping.
Have you given it up now, except for food? Or are there still things you gather and sell?
Good Morning All, My Good Hair Gov says the most important job is to protect our “most vulnerable citizens” who are ….the “unborn.” Citizen, votes, etc. our unborn citizens….Please write him a letter….
I don’t think I will ever really give it up, so what we do now, is take our backpacks once a month or so, to some of our old favorite haunts, and pull out some choice items. I love books, and vintage toys.
We get our clothing and other house supplies now from our own apartment complex dumpsters and curb sides, at the end of the month when people move out. Last month I picked up heavy cookware (Cuisinart pots and pans, copper-bottom pots and enamel-coated pots) from a curb. They were heavy, but worth the couple of trips up the hill!
We are also regular customers at our local Goodwill, which I love.
My daughter and son-in-law bought theirs after Christmas several years ago at a HUGE markdown. Apparently in addition to post-holiday prices, the only one of its kind was a display model, so they got it even more cheaply.
I used to buy an 8-9 ft. Douglas or Fraser fir, haul it home and put it up. I went the day after Thanksgiving when they were very freshly cut. I didn’t put it up until about 10 days before Christmas.
Although I have a high ceiling that would still accommodate one now, the area where it would go wouldn’t fit something that large because of furniture placement, so I get one of those little fresh firs at Lowe’s and it goes in the middle of the dining room table.
Great diary this morning CS, and welcome back. I hope your holiday travels were fun and festive.
Now to the bad news. As a 49er fan, I can no longer be your friend. Now that I know you’re a Seahawks fan. Sorry.
I hope your team loses in a fiery burnout in Atlanta this weekend. And that Russell Wilson gets turf toe.
We had one get in a dumpster and refuse to leave. The cops couldn’t get it, if they opened the lid he was ready and vocal. The fire dept couldn’t get it to come out with hoses and it bit through one hose and ruined it. Local animal control couldn’t help much, they’re used to stray pets.
After several hours, a local farmer solved the problem. He coated a rope tangle with bacon grease and a few dog treats and threw it into the dumpster. Twenty minutes later, he opened the dumpster, lasso’d the coyote’s mouth and removed a coyote that had tied itself up. Neat trick.
Boxturtle (After public safety spent hours getting nowhere)
RevBev, are you in Texas? Also, didn’t get the details, but was your daughter recently sworn in to office? Am I wrong, or do you have a quick moment to share?
Anyhow, the Gov… Nothing before the polls, just at the moment, is there?
So what kept your flight in Chicago? Was it equipment trouble or something else?
Life begins at conception and ends at birth according to his attitude.
I’ve been fighting back by contrasting anti-abortion with pro-life. They’re NOT the same. If you’re pro-life, you need also to be against capital punishment, against wars, and against guns in the wrong hands. You need to be for education, WIC, foodstamps and health care.
Anti-abortion is just anti-abortion.
Boxturtle (Obama is more Pro-life than Gov. Goodhair)
Yes, TX…..just trying to figure out what the “unborn” residence is…address, etc. Such a dork, sorry.
Yes, the swearing in was yesterday in MN. Proud? yes. Thanks for asking.
Better get that condition treated before it gets worse.
Boxturtle (Naturally, as a Browns fan, I have plenty of room to talk)
Yes, guns and the death penalty contradictions are irrational; but “they” wouldn’t notice.
Thanks, C-S, just back from one of those episodes that the overuse of your bytes is announced, then you get an update for twenty minutes. Now going to read the post.
You know, and if it comes down to an NFC Championship between the Seahawks and the Niners, sigh, well, I hope the Niners go down in flames, bleeding from their eyeballs…OH! Hi, Kris!
What was that last score? 42-13? (Mason’s checking) Yeah. Hometowned. Smoked isn’t even the word.
LOL, HaHA, but look, we both loves us some left coast, I know we can agree on that!
Don’t let them not notice.
Oddly, the argument seems to be having an effect on the folks who call themselves pro-life around here. I had a Catholic priest agree with me!
Boxturtle (He felt that anti-abortion was THE most important pro-life position amongst all the others)
Yeah, see… 24-8 over the last two seasons. Nothing to treat there.
The heater to the windshield malfunctioned. Hour on the tarmac and a new heat controller didn’t fix it. Captain took the plane out of service and there was no spare plane, so United booked the whole plane into the Hilton and the Hyatt with 3 meal vouchers. Some of the most fun I have ever had.
Thank God it wasn’t the weather…O’Hare hasn’t changed; the weather people were lined up along the walls in fetal positions, using their luggage for pillows.
Thank you, Ruth, and good morning.
Not sure if you noticed, but when they played in San Francisco your Hawks only had two field goals.
And that was against our QB who averages 10 fewer points per game than the guy currently starting.
And the magic words are Justin Smith. He didn’t play a couple of weeks ago. He’ll be back this weekend.
As someone who flies out of Chicago (usually Midway) I can attest to the fact that O’Hare and Chicago in general where the weather is ugly.
I used to be able to get a direct nonstop flight on Southwest to Oakland when I visit my sister, but there are fewer of those even on Southwest now.
Life begins at ovulation if you’re talking to a Down and Dirty LifeRedefiner. As some one who had a miscarriage, it frightens me to realize I’d have been criminally liable for a personal misfortune under this bit of ideology.
Doug firs are so beautiful. I can picture it, especially with a high ceiling.
Whatever. BRING it!
I had a sort-of two story great room, the upstairs was only a bedroom and bath and loft area that overlooked it. tall windows nearly to the ceiling (a bitch to wash). The big tree went in a corner near the window. Once I could get Fraser firs I usually got those. The whole house smelled wonderful.
But I think the tree weighted almost as much as I did, and it was a real challenge getting it into the house and set up.
Aren’t you the charmer. At the end of the season there will be a nice dark closet for you to recover in, I hope.
Not involved anymore, but when I lived in D.C. my TX relatives did not hear any kind words from me during the season. Except occasional glee when we romped.
That should be “weighed” not “weighted.” Can’t type this morning.
I’m waiting for the day when your eggs are declared persons before ovulation. Then we can charge you with unlawful imprisonment. At YOUR birth.
Boxturtle (because we don’t like your viewpoint)
The fir smell is Christmas for me. And of course, candles. I wait until a little over a week after Christmas and hover over the markdowns from then, and snatch up nice luscious candles I would never buy at full price. Not quite dumpster diving, but a few dollars instead of dozens is very nice.
You must be a Skins fan!
I hope you guys can find one of those Adrian Peterson model knees for your QB there.
Otherwise, your team has a one-way ticket back to mediocrity.
*sadface
(I like RGIII!)
I can see criminal negligence charges on behalf of future grandchildren should the prospective parents (of 12 or so) reject the Holy Teaching of whatever sort.
Morning Crane-S,
Myself keeping in mind that bgrothus is off for a trial at 9:00 AM today, LANL 6, I think Mtn Time.
RevBev, were you able to be there to witness the swearing in?
This is a cool story. Good thing for the rescue, poor little guy could have ended up in a compactor.
Yes, and I saw that, do not think there’s a chance the team can operate at full value without the QB they trained with, and instant knee is not available yet. Nice while it lasted.
Thanks for mentioning it, very proud of bgrothus.
No, She promises pictures, but Im in TX, not MN. She said there was a lot of work after the election, also. Let alone a little boy….;)
Those Skins fans were furious, still are. Some claiming the coach shouldn’t have allowed that. Now, it’s an ACL/LCL tear. Big surgery.
Idiot coach keeping him in the game ought to be fired for criminal stupidity. If the team Dr approved it, he should lose his license.
Boxturtle (*grump*)
Thank you for the shout-out to bgrothus, and good morning!
I’ve been thinking of Barb too. Nice photo here of the protestors.
I’m oldtime, remember George Allen sending in Larry Brown over and over until the man could not even move anymore, that seemed criminal at the time to all of us.
I think most of the enterprise is criminal….what goes on in Dallas is absurd and used to make the crime reports all the time. Yukkkk. I know, Im in the minority.
From my experience running a successful campaign for the House in MD, first she will get pleas for jobs from everyone who wore a button for her, even if their actual support was not a factor. From this she needs to choose a bright, committed staff and good luck to her.
I know the topic of today’s post is dumpster diving, but what’s with all of this trash talk?
*G*
Plenty of rain here, but not terribly cold….dreary. But need the rain.
Woah. Woah. BT, CS…
RGIII insisted, INSISTED, that he was fine and wanted to stay in the game.
What were they supposed to do? Tell him no and CTScan him on the sidelines?
Garbage in, garbage out, can we fit that in here somewhere?
Thanks….She said she has a Lege Assistant….I did not yet ask who it is. She has some bright, young “in laws” in the area, so that choice would not surprise me. Sounds like you’ve had interesting experience.
Let me just mention, drafting legislation there will be excellent assistance if MD is any example. And there is always lots of mail with constituents’ wishes. I’d suggest she be really circumspect, there are quite nasty ulterior motives sometimes, look to see what effects other than the immediately obvious ones that any bill will have.
Yes. Young men frequently make the wrong decision when their macho demands it. Especially in an environment like football. He’s not the first player who played when he shouldn’t have done so and players have actually lied to their coaches about their condition to get into a game.
I expect the coach and team doctor to make the right decision.
But then, winning the playoff at the cost of one young man’s knee might seem a good trade to a coach whose job and salary are based on winning.
Boxturtle (A potential concussion is a pull, yet a thoroughly messed up knee is not?)
It’s all my fault!
(Be grateful I didn’t start the ‘Should Barry Bonds be in the Hall of Fame’ conversation)
Thanks…it really is exciting. She ran against an incumb. R, and on the night of the election was ahead the whole time. St Paul is really a pretty area; her office will be right at the edge of the F. Scott Fitzgerald old neighborhood, iirc. Very impressive buildings & surroundings…..
Yes, thank you. But it was covered along with Clements on NPR;)
I dunno. Hazarding a guess here…
Based on the earlier information about his previous injury (knee sprain), the assumption on the sideline may have been that he aggravated the sprain. When talked to by coaches and Dr. Andrews, his symptoms and pain were probably consistent with a sprain. Couple that with his insisting that he was okay, and they let him back out there.
Shanahan is a smart dude and is invested in the future of the Skins. I can’t believe that he would sacrifice a Rookie QB for the sake of winning one playoff game.
MAC vs PC, anyone?
Hey, thanks everyone. Here is a link you may be able to check for updates, no live blog/no electronics in court. xo
http://losalamos6.tumblr.com/
It is such a gray, nasty day here, and Ive got a dentist appt in a bit….perfect timing.
Titanium beats out flesh and blood any day, right? I do wonder if the advances in artificial body parts have anything to do with coaches’ thinking.
Good luck today bgrothus! My thoughts are with you.
The devil made me do it.
If you look at the season Adrian Peterson had coming off a similar injury, you’ve got to wonder if we’re beyond that problem. No such thing as a career ending knee injury anymore, maybe?
Chromebook.
Echo that and cheers for courage. Good luck.
Best to you, Barb. We’ll be waiting to hear from you when you return!
Sacrifice, no. Let himself be talked into taking the most likely path to victory, yes.
If it turns out he had enough information to pull and didn’t, I hope he gets fired. If it turns out he didn’t have the information to pull, a way should be found to get a coach that information in the future.
Boxturtle (Is there an MRI at the stadium?)
Don’t get me started. I am one of those “you will pry my Mac from my cold dead hands” types.
No – and it has nothing to do with his alleged, um, enhancement regimen. and you know I’m a fan
am willing to check the stats …but I can not think of a single a-b where he came through when we needed him to – or did you miss all those play off and world f-ing series goose eggs ?!?!
helluva slugger and mebbe a great athlete – but his gaudy numbers never contributed or advanced the team in those moments where a hall of famer steps up
think Panda and Posey(sp?)
am typing on my laptop !!!
Mornin’ Crane and Firedogs
We, on the other hand, are having sunshine, a rarity in January! And it is “warming” up into the 40s today and higher by the weekend. Then the bottom drops out and we’re back to frigid.
Good things to you.
Good luck. They’re GOING to convect you, it seems to me. Make sure you get your say in. And pay the fine in pennies. Or farthings, if you can find enough of them.
Boxturtle (the farthing is the smallest unit of western currency)
I hope I can get the media to confirm my identity as an, activist, someday. We have several topics nearer my home from nukes to open-pit mining that need visible opposition, thanks for the inspiration, bg. Never Give Up.
The new battery worked? Awesome!
And yes, Barry won games with his bat. Maybe not in the WS, but he did it in the regular season constantly.
4 straight MVPs doesn’t equal HoF for you?
Good morning, you are seeing that personal profit motif straight, imho.
We are in solidarity about not paying any money, so jail time, yeah.
What do you have against toxic assets?
LOL, and I love it when the ads for Waste Management pop up on the dumpster diaries.
Good Morning, C-S
In memory of our dear friend, Richard deBerry, who loved Pete Seeger, here’s a link to PS’s “Garbage.”
Thanks for the post and host, Rachel.
When my daughter was visiting me over the holidays, I was lamenting my guilt over shopping at Fresh ‘N Easy (they have a future link with Walmart) and Sissy told me that she thought it was okay because I do so much shopping at the thrift store. She said it balances out my footprint by recycling all my clothes and books and other neat goodies I find at the thrift store.
Good morning, cbl, good to see you.
Over at eschaton, there is a Sunday “Bobblehead” column about the talk shows. There, we get ads for making your own picture into bobblehead dolls. Really hilarious.
good morning ! was just about to ask after you – hope all is well
Good Morning and Big Hugs, BG.
Bless your heart. How much time are we talking about here? Can we send you boxes of love and treats?
Want embarrassment? I tried taking some of my unused stuff to one of those stores, and had it rejected. Velour suits are athletic wear.
Thanks for mentioning Richard. Ive been thinking alot about him also. This is right around the time my Angela died and went to the bridge; not sure of the exact date. Around the same time I broke toes while trying to avoid landing on her….Can we say ’12 got off to a good start…..Mourning for a year, I guess. Then whoever would have thought Richard would not be here for the year….so strange. He’s at the Bridge with all those friends. A toast….and tears.
Oh, I love this, and I did not know that Richard deBerry was a fan of Pete Seeger. Thank you!
I believe the thrift stores do balance things. I could spend hours in each one, just looking at the fascinating stuff. Some folks are making a profession of flea market booth rental that they pack with great thrift store finds. Was recently speaking with a man and his family who does this full time, and they absolutely love what they do.
I love your dive posts –
my ‘thrifting’ hobby was originally born out of necessity, but it opened my eyes to just how much we waste
I hope you were huffy; they have that weird way of being very snobby someetimes….Ugh…
congrats ! I would be insufferable in my pride :D
Things are grrrrrreat, as Tony would say. I’m sleeping in almost every morning. Ah, I like it.
And, I’ve been spending time putting my office in order, in order (ha) for me to do some writing of my own.
You might have missed the story so I’ll share it again. I had a quite large desk that we used in the living room to display the tv and we switched it out for some other piece of furniture. We were going to put the desk on the curb and hope someone would pick it up, but I decided to take it to MEND. They couldn’t find a family who wanted it so I was driving my van around for two weeks with it in the back when I decided enough of that. I called another charity and they didn’t want it either, so I took it to the Thrift Store, but no luck there. I decided that the universe was telling me to keep it. So, I’ve been painting it and set up my ‘puter stuff and hung some nice things on the walls, and voila (that’s voy-la), I have a pretty spiffy office in our dining room now.
Won’t you bake a cake with a hefty file in it, send it to bgrothus and co.?
We’re talking compost here.
I blush for you, Ruth. People just bring bags of stuff to the one I go to, so there’s no chance of getting rejected. Except for me and my honking ass too big desk. And, it worked out well for me anyway.
I’ll toast with you. In memory and fondness. (Clink)
That’s dear….Thanks.
When they went for my own personal purse, I got a real laugh.
Back at ya”’(It’s a local church one here that is so picky.)
I just gotta laugh, too….I really do have a dentist appt….
Later, kids….;0
Basically, yes. I tore my ACL completely in a soccer game when I was 40. First thing I did was get up and try to play, only to end up on my face. The adrenalin tells a person he is not injured, I think.
Not a player decision.
In reality, many, many things (all good stuff) do get rejected.
And that’s where I come in.
Well, I must admit I’d pay the fine. Though if I couldn’t pay in pennies, I’d pay in a certified check written on an out of the country bank in an non-controvertible currency made out personally to the Clerk of Courts AND the judge.
And I’d pay about 1.01 extra, so they’d have to issue me a refund check.
Boxturtle (And you wonder why some courts have two paragraphs of payment directions)
Meant to be, sounds like.
4 straight MVP’s bestowed by guys enthralled with his numbers
H o F ers step up. Willie Mays would have never been Rally Monkey’s bitch.
I realize in typing that I am truly old school and may be missing the zeitgeist. (I think same prob that contributed to Shanahan’s current troubles – would a younger coach, coming up in this era have let him play ?)
I wont be unhappy if he goes in –
p.s.haven’t even installed the battery yet – just working off the power cord — I haz a serious happy
I still have the velour suits. Some of the other I gave to our crisis center, which I always direct some effort to.
Nothing. Just like to share with others.
Boxturtle (A farthing is not toxic, just VERY small)
I have the silliest purse of them all. It’s a gold lame Lancom that’s pretty tiny, about 5″ x 6″ with a little handle that I found at the thrift store. People tease me all the time, but the stuff I need when I go out fits just fine. Small wallet and keys. No cell, no makeup, no hair brush. Most gals carry around something as large as a bowling bag. Who’s silly now?
Sounds adorable. Mine is a highline missing its name brand decal, so it was marked down to just above freebie.
:D
did the same with two old dressers – our daughters wound up with a lovely ‘mermaid’ room
what a fascinating post. i used to read a blog by a guy who lived off this practice as well. we really do throw away too much in this country.
How I adore just above freebie. Got two bell peppers for 15 cents the other day. When I was at the birthday party in Utah I chatted with a gal who also shops thrift stores. She and a coworker had contests to see who could find the best bargain.
I rarely carry a bag any more – the larger the purse, the more crap you start hauling around. and am constantly knocking them off backs of chairs at work – ‘accidentally’ of course :D
Tim Kurkjian voted for him :) Said so on SportsCenter just now.
Said Barry was the greatest hitter he’s ever seen.
Mermaids! The color I painted this hog is somewhere between sea foam and avocado. While the paint was still wet, I scrubbed it with a crunched up plastic bag and a kitchen brush so some of the white underneath shows through. I splurged and bought a piece of hard, clear plastic on top. What’s that stuff called?
Oopsie. Did I do that?
i love thrifting. i have found some of the most Fabulous clothes in them, as well as lots of other useful stuff. what i like about thrift clothing is that you’re almost guaranteed to be able to put together an outfit that no one else has.
i really feel sorry for retail shoppers sometimes. we used to joke about “lincoln park trixies” in chicago, because it was so common to see women wearing almost exactly the same outfits, on the streets. conformity is so lame.
Chicago Dyke is learning about where and when the bargains come out. The town north of here has bigger markdowns, it’s shabbier.
i know sometimes it’s called Lexan.
Our thrift shop is an arm of the senior center that handles larger apartments to hospice care. Some good stuff comes through as people pass away. The prices are reasonable and proceeds mostly go to retention bonuses/ retirement contributions for their care workers and equipment essential to operation of the center.
Thank you so much, bgrothus, and bless you.
Honey, conformity Anywhere is so lame.
The crisis center runs one here, and lets people taking shelter there shop for nothing to outfit themselves. Of course, a lot arrive without even essentials since they have had to run from bad situations.
vintage Channel pink suit and Fendi bag for under $20 – I win !
paid for two years of daughter’s sorority dues :D
I think it is probably a drive for you but, I would start looking for goodwills, etc. nearest USC and UCLA, and visit them about two weeks after each semester ends — you will NOT believe what those kids donate just so as not to haul home
I love my laptop…carry it all over the house, even to the bathroom so I can read while doing makeup and such. I have a relatively ancient MacBook, ca. 2007, and I’m thinking of getting a refurbished MacBook Air if I get a decent income tax refund.
And thanks for stopping by and commenting, chicago dyke. I’m like you, I really feel sorry for people who walk into a mall and pay full price. The thrift store is so much more interesting and fun as well.
There are two particular clerks who handle the mark-downs at the grocery store I shop at. They’ve gotten to know what I like and point that stuff out to me. Head of lettuce yesterday afternoon was 34 cents. Yougurt’s for 36 cents. Chicken breasts for 1/2 price.
Yes, timing is everything, so I shop in the afternoons when they set that stuff out. I even buy flowers for myself sometimes if they’re 3/4 off. Oh, the luxury.
I was at the thrift store just hours after the huge wild fires we had several years ago. A lady came in wearing her pj’s. She had lost everything! I gave her some money to help re-build some semblance of a wardrobe. What a tragedy.
My mouth is watering, cbl. I can’t even imagine the likes of a Beverly Hills (UCLA) Goodwill.
– it’s even older than yrs and I’ve been without for over a year. so happy
Now is the best time for me, early is when the markdowns come out. So here is my sign off. ‘Got errands to do’.
Thanks for good company, and the reminder.
my first goodwill was three blocks from Stanford . . . oh yeah, I was hooked
prada, pret-a-porter, 8$.
i win. ;-)
I personally know the manager at this place (HS classmate) and that would be an excellent idea to suggest to them. Thanks.
At any rate, it will be protective. Thanks.
I also painted the frame of a bulliten board and mounted that, and I have my angels. They are head and wings with a little shelf on top made of something that looks like garden statue material. I looked online to see if I could find a photo of something similar but no luck. Funky.
Lincoln Park trixies — love it
again, check out the nearest cancer society shops near those neighborhoods – interesting to find so many items with orig.price tags still on them . . . why, it’s as if some folks shop for shopping’s sake
yes, the new battery is installed.
Good morning all. Thanks for the postnhost Crane.
damn ! :D
Great idea. When Katie graduated from UCSB, the streets where littered, covered with furniture and stuff. So, yes, after school’s over. Superb thinking, cbl. Thanks.
Take best care, dear.
pulling the plug in 3…2….
Voila !
I so love your handy hotness
i really like the programs that help poor women looking for work get “interview grade” suit sets. it’s a big help to women who deserve good paying work but can’t afford the clothes to get the jobs.
i admit to being really glad that workplaces have grown more casual in terms of standards of attire. i hate wearing stiff, collared long sleeve etc sorts of clothes all the time. when i dress up, i dress to the 9s and it’s fun to do the whole “get ready” preparty dressing thing. but i hate having to put on uncomfortable stuff and wear it all day at work.
Prices at the thrifts around here have risen recently due to the fact of, “pickers,” not necessarily those most in need, pulling best bargains to buy and make a profit on.
For shame. There outta be a law.
Unbelievable waste. Mind-boggling. I saw a dumpster full of canned food and dried food goods…just all set in there in boxes…at a place of charity. My jaw dropped. Right before the holiday.
I’m really impressed with how well that program works. When they started it here many moons ago, I thought it was rather silly. A resume gets you a job, not a suit. I’m now a supporter.
Boxturtle (I was young, stupid, and naive. At least I’m no longer young)
That’s BS. Granted, the ‘pickers’ are very savvy, there is way more than plenty to go around. No need for prices to rise. Our local Goodwill is extremely well managed and dirt cheap, and they rake in the bank, every week. No need to raise prices (they haven’t) or try to determine who you think is or is not in need. Many people who are clean and well dressed, even in good vehicles, are still in crisis and need, and it should not be anyone’s business to try to figure out why someone goes to a thrift shop anyway.
Thanks, again for a great post, C-S.
Were we all gypsies in a former life?
Tubby time for Demi. See you all later.
still, after diving, i tend to find the best bargins at yard sales. i really cleaned up last year at my neighborhood’s multiple-home yard sales.
there was one woman selling a mess of clothes; she had so many for sale i found myself wondering how she could’ve fit them all into the closets in her house. and yes, several of them still had the tags on. consumerism, the american religion.
Oh, and I’ll leave you all with something my mom says all the time, Waste not, Want not. A little depression wisdom.
Absolutely. The YWCA in Spokane does this. Women make an appointment and are specifically suited with appropriate (gorgeous) interview attire, if I remember 5 outfits anyway. Shoes, stockings…everything.
Thank you demi, and have a great day!
thanks y’all — everyone have a good, productive day. I’m off to to the land of mac’updates’ needed after a year’s sabbatical -oy
Hey! If you’re still around, make sure Dad sees this today!

Chapter from the new book Winds of Winter.
I’ll never forget a yard sale from a couple of years ago here (Kentucky) where a woman said, in a slow drawl, “Get you some bags and you get you some clothes.” She added, “and these t-shirts. For twenty-five cents a bag, why hell, you can use them for rags, if you need to.”
Plus, it’s so much fun!
Thanks for hosting Crane-S,
We are a rural enough area to personally know all the people who are running their own full time thrift shops as a small business, within a hundred mile radius.
My own problem is the continual attempt to get rid of two things I am not using, before any one new item can be considered essential to our present circumstances. /smile. Mostly sticking to the rule and our “stuff” is being reduced noticeably.
Good day everyone, needing to change into a different work outfit and keep two appointments.
You bring up some good points with the “throw away technology” here CS. I may do a diary on just this one aspect.

Not sure from this tweet if they will be doing this today or Friday, will try to see.
I really wish you would and will look for it. With your technical and electronics background, I think your take would be fascinating. Thank you.
Nice P & H Crane-Station. Did someone mention yard sales? How addicting they are, no.
Thanks for that.
You’re not just whistlin’ Dixie. I can spend hours at those things.
Welcome, will try to see if they are doing this today or will delay till Friday, due to no technology in the courtroom.
Great downsizing plan, thanks, and have a great day.
So could my little buddy, can’t wait till spring.
Ok, what is the stoopidest thing ever sold at a yardsale? Might be a whole topic there.
stupid cell phones. a friend of mine just called and his damn phone kept hanging up on me, cutting our conversation shorter than normal.
this doesn’t happen in europe, where they have real coverage.
I’m following that@0ccupyNewMexico account. I didn’t know that hey are planning a hunger strike in jail, if they are sent. They’ll need to tweet and do press releases daily if that happens. Wow.

Yes, wow. A jail hunger strike takes balls of steel and an iron will. Needs to be out to the public if it comes to this.
LOL, great topic!
Amazing how we adjust to the unacceptability of constant dropped cell phone calls.
i know they are powerful examples of bravery and resolve, but i don’t like hunger strikes. you can do real damage to your body that doesn’t go away once you start eating again. and given how fascist our security forces are these days, i suspect they’d resort to force feeding the protesters. which is a horrible experience. i will honor whatever choice the 6 make, of course.
I support them as well, and thank you.
Here’s mine. A pile of sticks with it’s own sign. Sign said free stuff with stuff crossed out and sticks cobbled to the side. Clean up for the yard sale. Hillbilly improvisation at it’s finest.
Beautiful, clapping.

New Mexico is on MT, right?
Oops, my bad, didn’t mean to repeat there, came in from a jog, read from bottom of thread!
Yes, it is shortly before 1 PM there.
Vibes to Barbara, bless her heart.
Hoping for the best, and really happy to read that they’ve got lots of supporters. Maybe that will help keep them out of jail.
Hi, all. Been trying to follow LANL 6 tweets on Kindle while waiting for updates to install in laptop, but I don’t have the last ones about testimony having ended. Drat.
I wonder if that means the defendants didn’t put on any testimony of their own? The only testimony tweeted about seems to have been prosecution.
I get that it’s muni court, but still, both sides get to put on a case! Have they decided not to even defend themselves?
Frustrating not to be present to see what’s going on. I hope for the best for Barbara’s sake, but have sinking feeling there will be jail time.
Once upon a time I think this would have brought national press coverage, but not now, when Washington is all busy talking about a trillion-dollar coin and whether Drudge comparing Obama to Hitler and Stalin means he’s unserious now.
Journalism has failed democracy. Barbara’s sacrifice and witness in Los Alamos has value; will the country know about it?
On that note, back to twitter to try retweeting some of news.
Still not getting all the tweets with #LANL 6.
It’s after 1 pm in NM now. Not that courts always start on time.
Who else is around to bite fingernails with while we wait to hear?
I’m not getting anything either, tejanarusa. I have the Twitter search box set to LANL. Nothing new as of 1:30. Nothing on Google News.
Anyone else, please update if you have one.
I’m watching a couple of twitter feeds as well and refreshing regularly. Nada.
Mason, thinking out loud says possible six month (well, 179 days) suspended for a year, on condition that they don’t do it again, plus possible fine, if convicted. Only a guess.
(*working on the quicks*)
On edit: jail unlikely, or depending on prior records, there is credit for time served for any short stay.
Well, and then there’s an appeal.
Again, only a guess.
Oh, ha. A promise they won’t do it again?
I’m guessing the court won’t get that out of them.
I can sit around and chew my nails. But, I’m grateful for those who are twittering and keeping us updated.
I meant to say I can’t sit around and chew my nails.
Crane, based on similar cases (protesting at Los Alamos is a tradition), and the prejudice of the ex=police chief judge, I’m betting on a few days to a month of jail time, especially as they will refuse to pay a fine.
But beyond that history and what Barb has told us, I don’t know the locals. For a non-political heartburn case, yeah, I’d figure suspended/probated.
Basically, feel like Ican’t really predict this one. So, on pins and needles.

NO JAIL TIME!!!
But, they’ve said they won’t pay fines and costs, which could mean they will eventually do time for failure to pay. Probably not today, though.
Barbara gets to go home to her critters!
Oh, so can’t wait to hear from Barbara!
We’ll need to wait and see if they decide to pay the fines.
Apologies for incorrect link above. Out again. Thanks tejana.
I’m starting to breathe again.
Yeah! If it were me, I’d expect perhaps a little group celebration…following a news conference, no doubt, before getting around to facebook or even fdl. Don’t think she does Twitter herself.
I sent a thank you tweet to OccupyNewMexico for posting the news.
I wonder what will happen when the fines are due, and unpaid. But someone would have to file to invoke the jail time, so no worries for awhile, at least.
Exactly. Think I’ll go make something to eat…didn’t want to leave the laptop after 1:00 passed.
I dunno, maybe the statement would have been more dramatic had there been jail time, but just the same, I’m relieved.
Woohoo!!
hiya, ysd! Good news is good, huh?

nonq,yes,exactly.
demi, come on back,it’s safe to look now!
Yeah…and I wonder if the threat of a hunger strike and all the ruckus outside the courtroom will persuade the court that they’ll be too high maintenance to actually incarcerate for any length of time.
Thanks, tejanarusa, I will thank them too. Hope she checks back in here, we are all waiting!

Fantastic! Hey, just checked and that embeds nicely. Anyone want to start a new thread for Barbara?
