Spartanburg County Jail Portrait Series by David Blackwell under creative commons on flickr.
There is a healthcare crisis in the US prison system.
For the past month, I have been looking at the legal file from my own case, and researching how it was possible to be convicted of, among other things, a DUI, when the blood test results showed no alcohol or drugs. I have read hundreds of Court of Appeals cases, and looked up information on all topics relating to my case. The entire floor of one room is covered with stacks and boxes of papers. Sometimes, several days pass when I have not gone outside, or even looked at the news. What I have learned is shocking, even for me, and I thought I had ‘seen it all.’ When the time is right, I will write a series of essays, because I am not just talking about my case. The vast majority of people plead guilty, never dreaming, because their lawyer failed to tell them, that they would do their time in the hell of a county jail, or that the evidence was exculpatory, or that the science was junk science, or that they would have to serve a longer sentence than they were led to believe.
Our country locks up more people than Stalin’s Gulag. Kentucky is one of the nation’s leaders for jailing children for status offenses, which are non-crimes like missing school. In Oklahoma, a pregnant woman went to a hospital because she was in severre pain. The staff called the police, the police searched her purse and found two pills for which she did not have a prescription; she was removed from the hospital, where she died.
One of the practices I find most appalling and offensive is locking up the mentally ill, including the elderly. ‘Harry’ was a mentally ill man who was in the jail at the same time I was. He was in a tiny isolation cell, without a book to read, a pencil and paper, or anyone to talk to. During the entire time I was there, he was denied recreation time outside his cell. We never knew who he was or why he was there, and we suspected he knew no more than we did, regarding his situation. I have shared this before, but since I believe that ‘Harry’ is so common and so heartbreaking, it is important for people to be aware of how the mentally ill are treated. I apologize in advance, because I cannot stay for very long today, as I need to get some sleep, before going downtown for an appointment.
The Jailhouse Bullying of Harry
Frog Gravy is a nonfiction incarceration account.
Inmate names are changed.
Frog Gravy contains graphic language.
McCracken County Jail, February 2008
It is three o’clock in the morning, and a couple of female inmates next door, as well as Meg, in this cell, are on the floor, on their bellies, taunting and tormenting Harry, who is mentally ill and housed at the end of the hallway in an isolation cell. They shout, at maximum volume, “HAAAAAAARRRRREEEEEEE!!! Want some puuuuussssyy, Harrreee?!”
Harry shouts, “HELP! Somebody! Please! HELP ME! Let me out, please Helpmehelpmehelpmehelp.”
Harry’s repeated requests for help reveal Harry’s profound lack of understanding of his own surroundings.
I am on my bunk, listening. I cannot help Harry. If I try to intervene, the bully inmates bullying will turn their rage onto me. If I do not try to intervene, they will continue to prey on Harry.
I do not intervene, and I am ashamed of myself. I do not intervene, because I am afraid that I might hurt someone.
I have never seen, nor will I ever see, during my stay in McCracken County Jail, the pathetic man we call Harry. None of us knows why he is locked up.
If the guards were to take Harry out of his cement tomb for recreation in the outside cage, we would have witnessed it, because we watch the hallway that leads directly from his cell at the end to the outside cage at the other end. We never see Harry go to rec. Christie, who had been here for seven months on my arrival had never seen him during that time either.
On my bunk, I try to think things through, although the noise is distracting. There must be thousands and thousands of Harrys locked up everywhere. Harry the person is no longer Harry the person. Harry is a bait ball in a cement cell at the end of the hallway. He is as defenseless as a child. The apex predators are hungry to hate, and they feed on Harry constantly, kicking the steel door, shouting insults every time they pass by, picking what’s left of Harry and then picking some more.
I often wonder if Harry is somebody’s father. Or son. Was he ever loved? Did Harry ever matter, to anyone? Was Harry a veteran, psychologically crippled by tours of duty? I do not know.
Why are the Harrys out there picked up, locked up, and then alternately ignored and picked on? The bullies use Harry almost exactly as they would a bar. They wander by and use him when they need him, and when they’ve had their fill, they belch, toss the glass, and move on.
There are rumors that Harry has spread feces onto the walls on the cement tomb. Perhaps this is the only thing left for Harry to do, to tell himself that he still exists.
I wonder also about Harry’s mental and physical treatment care plans. This jail has a social worker who oversees the medical needs of the mentally ill inmates. While there may be a nurse practitioner or an off-site physician signing off on the care plan and the medications, all initial requests for such must go through the social worker gatekeeper first. The sad thing is that Harrys own profound disability at the moment prevents him from filling out the initial request form on his own behalf.
This jail is not at all unique. Jails are the new ground zero for Eighth Amendment violations of the mentally ill, as I see it. Harrys are warehoused, untreated and abused everywhere.
There should be a zero-tolerance policy for inmates tormenting their fellow mentally ill inmates. If I were the jailer I would post signs everywhere: You torment Harry and you go to the hole, to sit and think about your bullying. Signed, The Jailer. But, it is not meant to be. Rather, Harry is shelved jailhouse prey and nothing more.
What will eventually happen to Harrys everywhere? On my bunk, I wonder these things.

Good morning everyone! I need to catch up on the news. I’ve heard bits and pieces, unfortunately none of it is good. I am listening to a lecture series on the Middle Ages, and I see little difference between then and now. Next thing you know, we’ll burn people at the stake for not paying their taxes.
Thanks, C-S, sometimes I see the worst aspect of prison being that private firms are asking for more prisoners to pay for out of public funds.
Good morning CS. Thanks for the post and host.
Harry’s story breaks my heart. I don’t care if Harry was a murderer or a child rapist (and I say this as a victim of child rape). Nobody deserves to be robbed of their basic human dignity in such a way. No matter their crime, they are still human and.
I never thought this country would support gulags. We truly have become the old USSR.
But,but 9/11 changed everything, doncha know?
Thanks for the post. Good morning firepups.
Morning! Haven’t made it through the links yet, just wanted to say hello.
Boxturtle (Undercaffinated, underappreciated, and under the gun)
Good Morning, Crane-Station, Pups
Thanks for writing this up. It’s terribly sad, of course, but important to point out.
Sorry about that, chief. Does it have anything to do with asking Jane out? In front of everybody?
Just as Pearl Harbor was used as carte blanche to lock up Japanese immigrants, 9/11 has been used to scare the population into looking the other way. I wonder how many in our country realize just how many people are in jail, and just how different we are from the rest of the world when it comes to incarcerating people.
Where did everybody go?
just how different we are from the rest of the world when it comes to incarcerating people…
and guns and education and healthcare and how women and children are treated.
To be fair, there are places in the world, I imagine, where things are worse than here.
I went to put on a robe, get a glass of grape juice, and a piece of cake!
Absolutely. But those places aren’t the wealthiest nation on the planet.
A robe, grape juice, and a piece of cake?
I’ll trade you mornings. You can have my coffee and jeans.
The name of the greed game is to find people without money or political clout, and take advantage of them to the fullest extent, whether it’s teachers, or children, or people with personal use amounts of weed, or the elderly. The treatment and drug testing is big business.
The latest trend is predatory education.
LOL! I was up all night, so this is my evening desert!
Ad to that is that this is a “different war” because it is perpetual and occurs everywhere.
Be scared and give up your powers to a president who will “protect us’ from those evil moslems rather than live up to his constitutional oath.
The amount of injustice is overwhelming. I am so sad for Harry and all those who have no defense from/in our systems.
Thank you for the reminder, CS.
I think that roughly 2 1/2 million are incarcerated, but something like 7 million are on probation, parole, or some other program. It’s staggering. When I was growing up, I never even knew anyone who had been arrested.
Trust and believe, CCA doesn’t want to lose the immigrant cash cow, with reform.
You mean money does not equal compassion? Or intelligence? Or Peace and Justice?
Tell me more about predatory education, C-S.
Good morning, BoxTurtle! Speaking of coffee, the damn stuff is like buying gold, and I swear the bags are smaller. So, a small bag of undercaffeinated, over roasted coffee for ten dollars? What the hell!
Racism is at the root of many of the problems that exist in this nation’s incarceration system.
Of course it doesn’t. But our country claims to be peaceful compassionate, and just. We represent ourselves to the world as a shining beacon for all of those traits.
Never. We can always find over priced stuff. But, I say Hell no to that.
Yesterday I made leftover soup. Started with a piece of porterhouse steak and added everything I could find: a bowl of beans and rice, couple of pieces of bacon and all the veggies I could scrounge. Late afternoon I drove down the hill in search of any street people who looked cold and hungry. Or, wet, as it had been raining during the day. Had to go to four different corner before I found a couple. When it’s raining, they all go some where to hunker down.
Or, the cops roust ‘em.
In Kentucky, there is a class action suit brought by a group of students from Daymar College. They were told that their credits would transfer, and that a good job would be waiting. Turns out, many of the staff were not qualified, the credits did not transfer, and there were no promised jobs.
The students are stuck with substantial loan money to pay back. The judge ruled against them.
This is such a beautiful thing you do, demi. Really the best of what we might ever be or become.
This happens with a lot of vocational programs like Devry and Wyotech, and also with most ‘Nursing’ colleges and places like University of Phoenix. There is often promised job placement and promises of transferable credits. Then, $40,000 later – private loans of course, because FAFSA doesn’t recognize many of these schools – there’s no job waiting and you can’t go on to get a Bacherlor’s degree.
Yet another way Capitalism has gutted a human resource – education.
Good morning! Just back from taking a friend to the airport, cold and snowy out. Now up to read what looks like a very interesting post. Thanks, Crane-Station!
I agree. Thank you for feeding those folks demi.
You are fantastic.
Okay, I see how that’s predatory. Again, taking advantage of people who maybe should know better but don’t. I would never recommend a private school like that, but I’m sure people who are desperate for schooling might not realize what they’re getting into.
Do you have a link to the story about the class action suit and why the judge ruled against the students?
Good morning msmolly. I got your email this morning. I think I may use that piece… :)
I surely hope that people don’t think I’m bragging. I share only to serve as inspiration. It’s such an easy way to share a little bit of what I have.
That sounds wonderful. It’s amazing malls even stay in business, when people can go to Goodwill and get tagged, beautiful clothes, for example.
For someone who is homeless, good nutition saves in the healh-care cost
TV is on National Geographic Channel. Just switched it on. The intro to a show is playing, called Bid & Destroy. One of those shitty reality shows that just films guys doing their job and pretends it’s good television.
These guys destroy bank-owned foreclosures and surrendered properties. Apparently this show is intended to help us stomach, and even feel okay with, the destruction of homes after they’ve been stolen away by banksters.
I remember reading about Harry when you initially posted about him. It shrivels my soul to hear about it. There’s sooo very much that needs attending to that’s sooo not all right.
I’m very glad to hear you’re researching your case and “Harry’s”. We’ve gone waaay overboard on putting people in prison, what with our “justice” system.
Well, thanks, but I’m just a regular person who happens to enjoy cooking and sharing. :)
These schools hook in students and get the Federal dollars to educate them, which is what they are generally all about. These loans need to be denied in the first place, before the kids are in debt and the ‘schools’ get the cash.
No. You’re humble and fantastic. You’re not regular at all.
It’s more like the US represents itself to its own citizens that way. The rest of the world knows who we are and what we stand for.
That’s right, greenwarrior.
Wow, your dedication to the homeless and the hungry is really beautiful.
I agree. And, what kind of professional organization is going to be impressed with some of those schools on a resume?
I’m going to see if I can tiptoe out and get in a little hike before it’s starts raining. It is very dark outside. BBL.
Walker is proposing immediate DNA sampling for just being stopped or briefly held, no conviction on anything necessary (there you go Madison, WI protesters)from no crime to misdemeanor or whatever, he wants you in the data-base for future persecution and potential enemies list recrimination.
Morning C-S, I like the thoughtful topic as a diversion from the latest tube linkages, a nice change of pace as is Kris’ stated temporary diversion on guns.
Don’t we all have too much stuff? It’s such a win-win to give some of that stuff away. Clothes, books, towels, blankets. Do we really need closets full? I think not.
So true oldgold. Wasn’t there a statistic touted recently that there were more African-American men in jail than in college? (I am not sure on that but want you to know you have a valid point.)
It sounds like we are gonna get 4-8″ late Thusday and Friday. I am ready for spring.
I agree. That’s a much better way of looking at it.
I used to sell photocopiers to DeVry in Phoenix in 1980s. They had a stellar reputation in the technical world but got bought out by ITT, and their reputaion has suffered greatly.
What really ticks me off is Washington Post owned Kaplan University which bought out Iowa’s wonderful private junior college system and ran their reputations into the ground. It’s a jungle out there of bait and switch marketing.
Don’t even get me started on charter schools.
This is the subject of a documentary being put out;
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/politics/jan-june12/slavery_02-13.html
Charging black men with crimes was a latter day source of free labor.
Here is the opinion. Apparently, there was some ‘fine print’ the students didn’t read first. But still. No fine print should excuse under-qualified instructors.
The other this is this testing business. Rich kids van afford to spend time and money, just to learn and get an advantage in totally unrelated material to any career. I think the test prep industry is predatory as well.
I read somewhere just this week that a recent study showed black men were sentenced to 20% more time than white men for the exact same crimes.
Spring cleaning has a whole new look. Cannot tell folks how nice it is to clear up space.
BTW, I misspoke, it’s ‘Stim u Dent’ that my dentist recommends.
I’m not usually a cynical person, but it seems to me that If there’s Fine Print, there’s a problem. What’s being hidden?
Reminds me of all the side affects the announcers mention, quickly, at the end of the big pharm commercials.
In the event of death, call your doctor.
On topic, a law article from last fall (AG asking for more funding), combined with Walker having cut $1M from public health subsidies to Planned Parenthood last year, forcing several clinic closings announced yesterday, shows the top-down repression being set up where I am guessing (if repeated patterns are noticed) that WI will shortly be hearing proposals for privatizing of state run prisons.
JC:
Here is the story you referred to concerning the number of African-Americans and Latinos in prison as compared to in college.
Thanks. I have an appointment today, but when I got up this morning, I realized that Sonny will have my car to get to school this afternoon. Guess I better call and reschedule.
(Can’t I just put it off? No? Thought you’d say that.)
Kaplan was yet another one in the news lately. These places pull every trick in the book, from forcing students to buy books from their vendor, to holding on to a student’s living expense loan money for extra days, to refusing to forward transcripts, if the student wants to leave.
They say 24 hours, but if you call ahead, they won’t charge for a missed appt, I don’t think.
Great discussion as always. Wish I could stay but have to run a few errands. Will check back with you later.
As to my typing abilities this AM, I need spellcheck.*g*
I love open spaces. It’s kind of a zen thing, I think.
And, because I’m think about it, here’s that David Byrne song, Don’t Fence Me In.
I used it in a PUAC, but maybe there’s people here who missed it. It’s fun, at any rate.
I thought you might. It was an angle I’d never considered.
Thanks oldgold. Have a great day.
The next thing will be replacing those valuable public health places like PP, with drug testing facilities, by the rich, who, by the way, in some cases do more drugs that people buying street drugs.
It shouldn’t be a problem. I’ll call as soon as they’re open. This was a last minute emergency type thing. I was chewing on a sticky candy and pulled out a crown. I’m more embarrassed about doing something so stupid and I know I’m going to get a lecture. :(
See you later. Be good.
They can easily be combined with the charter schools.
Have a really great day JClausen. I am going to leave soon as well, and then return later in the day, if possible I am truly exhausted. The way we do people shameful
Thanks again for stopping by!
Hope your intense hard work is worth what you put into it.
Thanks for today, C-S.
Take a load off, Annie.
I am looking forward to your series on your trial and the legal and procedural errors. Being married to a lawyer has to help a bit with the investigation!
Or being a lawyer one’s own self…..
You might as well buy blue mountain, you can get it for under $40/lb. Wife says it’s worth the price and she’s cheap.
Boxturtle (Takin’ what they’re givin’ ’cause I’m workin’ for a livin’)
If so, I apologize to C-S for the oversight. I didn’t know that.
I am predicting the next big problem being with rampant DNA collection. Given the crime lab fraud in nearly every state, I am waiting to see what will happen, but I can envision crime lab analysts testifying to statistical probabilities that don’t exist, and on and on, and the problem is, the real ‘rapist’ is continuing to rape, while an innocent person is incarcerated, and this has happened.
Mason says that in 30 years of practicing criminal defense law, this is the most appalling thing he has ever seen.
From C-S’s profile:
Crane-Station is married to Masoninblue, who is an attorney. Hence, my comment.
I am still trying to figure out how it could have happened! Truly awful. Very much looking forward to your essays.
Then it appears that I erred….Thanks
While I have no confidence in the courts, I do believe that getting the documents and information out in the open is important. I will also file the transcript and complaint to the pre lab.oper authorities, and hope they do an investigation.
The fact fortunately dawned on me as a teen and noticing who was using and distributing, no disagreement there, no one else had the cash to be involved even it they had wanted to fall prey.
True! IANAL, but he is (retired).
Now there’s a thought! Shuusshh, don’t want to give ‘em any more ideas.
Sorry for having a couple things to attend to besides joining in or paying attention all that well. Appointment for a haircut is next. I’m never that good at getting the back of my head trimmed decently by myself.
Thanks C-S.
Is there any chance that Project Innocence might take interest? I know they’re involved in a lot of sentences for major crimes but it wouldn’t hurt to ask.
That will be a fascinating series.
Step into my office, friend…
Tee hee. I was going to suggest that we have a purveyor of fine coffees right here! The establishment formerly known as The Diner has a bit of everything. Even sticky buns with pocket lint sometimes…
I remember his recounting of his saga quite well, and still have Green River Killer in my Netflix DVD queue, availability unknown.
Mmmmmmmmmm. Pocket lint.
CS….this country resembles Stalin’s Russia more and more each day.
Does it go well with coffee? Tee hee.

You know that feeling when you’re smack in the middle of booking a couple hundred thousand dollars in hotel charges and airfare on a company credit card and the credit card gets cancelled because some asshat somewhere tried to charge $1,100 bucks at Walmart.com after stealing your card number, so you have to go back through the last few weeks of purchases and determine where your card is on file for outstanding or recurring charges and get back in touch with all of those dozens of places and tell them to hold any charges until tomorrow when you’ll call them back and provide them with new card information?
Yeah. That shit just happened. FML.
Hey, job security. That’s why they pay you those big bucks. /s
One difference: In Stalin’s Russia, the people were aware of what was happening.
oof. i’m guessing that probably felt like a gut punch.
Enough of a huge hassle if it were Kris’s own credit card, but I can’t imagine having to do it for his company with all of the places he has to call, try to connect to the right person, explain, etc., lather, rinse, repeat. UGH. No fun. And then start booking the travel all over again with a new credit card number.
This already happens with post-mortems and cancer testing … especially in specializations. Institutions make errors and support “professionals” making errors who are paid for their bad testimony. Money. Again. Always.
Coffee is non-negotiable. No matter the cost. Just sayin.’
CS, I hope your appointment goes very well.
demi – get that crown put back on and just say ‘no, thanks, see ya’ about the lecture.
{{Kris!}}
Ouch. How do you explain that to your coorporate folks who need to get on a plane today?
Actually, I’m guessing you won’t have much time to get back to OE today to answer that…
Just skimming thru as usual. Wanted to say hi, I’m working today, too.
And thanks to Crane-Station for her work on this story.
Dearheart.
That fucking job pays for your brand new car, no?
Suck it up.
Welcome to your the dad. Talk to some one who can help you.
Oh, forgot I wanted to tell msmolly: your description yesterday of your soupmaking and the recipe inspired me. I couldn’t find wings in a cheap enough package, so I just got a few legs. Then it turned out I no longer have my small cleaver and my small chef’s knife wouldn’t do the job.
So I tried another method I’ve been meaning to try…roasted veggies and chicken legs, then put them in the pot. Instead of stock,I’m just treating it as soup..it smelled so good, and made the whole house smell good. (by the time it was done it was so late I just had a few spoonfuls, but yeah, rich and flavorful.)
Thanks for the inspiration.
And crane-station, also, thanks for Harry’s story. You are so right; since the closing of mental institutions, jails have become the new parking place for the mentally ill. I won’t forget one terribly mentally ill appointed client I had years ago. Petty offenses, but he couldn’t stop repeating them when he was free. The very good and good-hearted judge helped me get him evaluated and some treatment, and eventually he was released and stayed out of trouble for awhile. Who knows what his ultimate story was.
And as a coda to that story; the good-hearted judge (who never ever jailed anyone for being unable to pay fines or fees) was defeated in re-election in the Republican sweep. Damn near every Democrat was swept out of office. A few made it back in last fall.
Sorry, hon.
That’s just how it seemed to me at the time.
Like listening to someone complain about the snow every morning, when they choose to be there.
Or, listening to people here talking about Gourmet – ie. expensive coffee when we’re talking about poor folks.
Just too much for me.
I’m So Out.
I actually didn’t own a cleaver either, but Meijer here carries stuff like that so I bought one. I just wince when I have to whack apart the chicken pieces, totally convinced I’m going to whack apart my thumb in the process. But I haven’t yet. Wings are more expensive, but if you can find them, backs are cheaper and good for this purpose.
One of the secrets of the broth is whacking the chicken into small pieces so the marrow and bones are exposed, and then “sweating” the chicken until it releases its juices. But yours sounds like a good alternative.
I will be posting the chicken broth/soup recipe on Sunday. And do try the rich beef broth and beef veg soup recipe I posted in November.
Maybe you want to consider your words before you post something like this, demi. It was uncalled for and mean-spirited. Nasty, actually.
That old saying our mothers taught us, “If you can’t say anything nice, then don’t say anything at all” fits here.
I have no idea what made you come out of left field and fire broadsides at all those people, but apologies are in order.
Molly, forgot to thank you for the stock recipe. I don’t have a cleaver, and I don’t think my heavy kitchen shears are up to the job.
Do you find you use the cleaver often enough that it would be a good tool to have?
Pain makes even the nicest people grumpy.
Crane-Station, your Harry story really highlights the cruelty of human beings. Thanks for sharing.
Heheheh. Back in my nonprofit days, a nice Nigerian gentleman tried to buy our fundraising merchandise and have it shipped to Africa. Pity his card wouldn’t go through the first time. Or with the second number he gave me. Or the third. It was a while before he figured out the scam I was pulling on him. I like to think I alerted several people to the fact that their card numbers had been stolen.
You are very kind.
I never heard how your Gershwin concert went. Was it a good time?
Hey Om, how are the pampered kitties?
Hey back at you. They are snoozing in their beds as we speak. I saw your story about Nagi wanting to spoon under the covers :). That was so sweet.
How is the remodel coming?
He is a spectacular cat. The boys are absolutely crazy about him because he is young enough to enjoy a good play session.
He has a funny little mew when he gets picked up. When I do it, it’s a mousy like peep, but when either of the boys do it, he sounds like a squeaky balloon releasing its air. LOL. Of course, it’s Nagi’s gentle warning that he does not want to be picked up by a child.
Ooof. Slowly and painfully. Our original plans have changed because after the galley kitchen wall was gone, we found the whole room opened up in ways we didn’t expect. We’re in a tough spot trying to find a way to make the space more functional for us without changing the value of the house.
How neat that he is so gentle with them. I know you mentioned that Abner is slowly coming to tolerate Nagi, but how is Gracie handling it?
I’ve heard her hiss more in the last few months than the previous 9-ish years. It’s been a difficult adjustment for both of the resident cats–much harder than I anticipated.
Yeah, that’s a tough call, customizing it to your needs but not putting yourself into too small a niche for resale….
Thanks. Yeah, I figured there wasn’t much point trying to do the stock if I couldn’t cut through the pieces. I’ve been disappointed with broths in the last few years, compared to the ones I made in the ’70′s with what in Massachusetts was called a “fowl.” Older chicken, what elsewhere was called “stewing chicken.” Don’t see those in stores anymore. Some folks had recommended the roasting method to compensate for today’s less-flavorful available chickens, and I hadn’t tried it yet.
I did use my smallish, but sharp, Japanese cleaver back in the ’70′s a lot…chopped up stew meat from bottom round steak (I think. don’t buy beef much anymore), chopped up whole chickens, etc., etc.
I think I either lost it or left it for my ex when we split up the kitchen stuff…he was cooking lots more than I at that point. It wasn’t big, but it was quite effective. Have no idea how expensive such a thing would be today, if I could find it. Was cheap at a little neighborhood store in 1970.
We have an axe and splitting maul in the garage, but that seems like overkill *g*
Yeah. Unless you’re plannning on using a half-side of beef or something. Or an ostrich.
*spew!*
Glad my tea was still steeping :)
Japanese cleaver? Sounds very sharp and practical.
Aw, poor Gracie. It’s just impossible to predict how resident cats will react to new kittehs. Let’s hope she’ll be okay eventually.
Of course, the elderly two cats I had when this bunch of kittehs (plus two more in the litter) was born here and turned into rambunctious children decided to spend their lives on the kitchen counter, out of reach of the kittens. They did, too, right up to their last days. But they were old already at the time…each one died within about a year or less after the birth of the kittens, and one was 17.
Has Gracie got a good place to retreat to, that she’s fond of, and feels secure in?
*Takes a bow.*
ysd: Yeah, actually, I loved that little thing. Wooden handle with Japanese characters on it, very sharp blade..stainless, I guess. Still have a narrower blade knife bought with it.
This is why I have so much crap—as soon as I give something away because I no longer have a use for it — I discover that I want to do whatever that disused thing was and wish I had the given-away thing.
(does that sentence even make sense?)
Well I’ll be darned. Sounds like there are several lovely recipes for ostrich out there. But, I think it would be better if the American Ostrich Association avoids putting pictures of squaking ostriches on its recipe page.
“Ring Around Ostrich” ?? “Ostrich Bits”?? Omg LOL!!
She prefers outside whenever the weather permits. Inside, her favorite place is on the back or the arm of the couch right under the heating vent. Nagi has claimed the only other heating vent in the main living area. It’s not Nagi’s fault, really. He’s just a big kitten, acting like a kitten.
How could anyone look at that sweet face on the recipe page and think food? LOL.
Eeeww! Not.gonna.click.that.link.
What you said at 129.
Of course, I think the same thing when I see commercials for beef showning live cattle, or pigs for port ads, etc….
Actually, it relates to why I left Tony the cleaver…moving more and more toward vegetarianism for some of those reasons. Some days I can’t deal with raw meat/chicken at.all.
Oh, geez, look at the time!
Still have a few documents to sign, copy, and get to the mailbox, so signing out from Over Easy for today.
Nice to “see” y’all!
I thought for a split second you called your ex ‘Tony the Cleaver’ !!
Cocktail hour!
ROTFLMAO! 707! So did I. Tony the Cleaver. No need to explain the divorce. Hahaha.
I’m with ya. I’d be all veggie if I wasn’t married with two boys. My little one may become a veg, though. He won’t eat burgers since he learned it’s cow.
lolol!
Gotta go, have a good evening and give the Prince of Darkness a good scritchin’ from
Ohmmmm
I’ve used it twice, both times to hack up chicken parts for the broth. But I think I paid less than $10 for it at Meijer (it’s an inexpensive Farberware one like this, and I probably will use it every time I make that soup, which probably will be often. It is SOOO good.
Since I’ve been cooking for 50 years without benefit of a cleaver, I don’t know how I made it this long. LOL.
It went incredibly well! The mayor was a huge hit, the soloists were tremendous, and the orchestra and choir were great too! Almost 2000 tickets were sold, which is a record for the symphony. Maestro Tsung Yeh was so pleased he was grinning and swaying and humming at the post concert reception.
Here’s a nice review from the local paper:
Mayor, IUSB singers earn their ovations
Thanks for asking!
I have eaten ostrich once, more than 10 years ago at a restaurant in the Cincinnati area that specialized in “game” dishes. When the waitress asked how I wanted it prepared, I said I’d never eaten it so I didn’t know. She said have it like you have your steak, so I ordered it rare, and it was quite tasty.
Demi, I hope you’re feeling better. I have no idea what set you off. Kris did not “deserve” an attack. He was complaining about something that went wrong at work; this site has heard more than a few complaints, some far less troublesome than his. Not everyone is called to do work esp for the poor; people serve in many ways. The people you serve and help are lucky to have you on their side.
I hope this comes across in the spirit given. I guess is a sense all groups have their rules. From what I recall, some reports of having a bad day/things going wrong at work, etc. have always been accepted; I just couldn’t tell what you thought was so different about Kris. My best…..
Dammit. I almost re-wrote that sentence…”why I left the cleaver to Tony” sure would have been clearer, wouldn’ it?
Sigh. The perils of typing in haste…and failing to edit when you know you should.
It was hilarious as written. “why I left Tony the cleaver” works for me. LOL!
I didn’t “leave Jack the knife” though. And we’re still friends.
Well, that was a glowing review. Sounds like it was quite a performance. Ever since you mentioned it, I’ve been listening to Pandora’s Gershwin and Irving Berlin stations.
I’m thinking about leaving Fred the masher, though. LOL! Luckily Mr.’s name isn’t Fred…
LOL, ysd and msmolly!
Now, getting up from the computer for realz.
Your comments to me over the last couple of weeks, with very few exceptions, have seemed to be critical or insulting. I brush it off for the most part, but this was particularly heinous.
Some asshole stealing our credit card number and providing me and my employees with an ongoing nightmare of logistical inconvenience, including 1 person stranded in Dubai and another stuck in Toronto, is not part of the job description. This isn’t just another humdrum day at work, or even a busy day at work, but sorting through the wreckage left by a very large security breach.
You’re a very bitter person sometimes, and it seems I’m one of your favorite targets. Can’t imagine why. Maybe it was that thread a few years ago where I tried to explain why a police officer’s training dictated that they shoot a dog while serving a warrant. You called me all sorts of names that day and have been hot and cold with me since.
Whatever it is, please get over it or just stop commenting at me. I said some very complimentary things about you and to you upthread, and this is what I get in return? Thanks, but no thanks. I’d rather you not interact with me at all than be treated like this.
Thanks again CS for the post and host. Best of luck to you in your ongoing legal battle, and I’ll look forward to your eventual series.
As the old comedian said, You can’t fire me, I quit.
Well, take good care, all.
You know, the more I think about this, the more I have to say about it.
We are not that familiar, apparently, if you would treat me like this.
That ‘fucking job’ is actually a great paying, very secure, professional position with a multinational firm that is currently growing exponentially, and will hopefully continue to provide my family with security and comfort for years to come. I’ve never referred to it that way, and it’s rude for you to do so.
Also, no, it doesn’t pay for my USED car that I just purchased. My wife’s job does that.
If Over Easy isn’t a safe place to vent, where is? We built this place, including you, in honor of a very brave and special man who passed away, as you well know. Do you think he’d like you treating me this way?
I’m a pretty great father. My children are happy, well-adjusted, comfortable, and healthy. The love me, and we spend a lot of time together. I’ve been the dad for over 11 years. This is nothing new to me.
And ‘talk to some one who can help’?! WTF is that supposed to mean? I wasn’t asking for help. I was venting steam. Did you see a request anywhere in my comment? A solicitation? Nope. Wasn’t there.
I feel like you owe me an apology. I’ll keep this thread open for the rest of the day. If you come back by and decide to apologize, you might want to apologize to the others you insulted with your follow up comment @102 as well.
Or you have my email address, if you’d like to use that. Or there’s facebook.
I’m sorry.
I care for you and demi a great deal. Tomorrow is another day. Please let bygones be bygones.
Thank you.
Im sorry, too. This, as said, has been a very meaningful spot.
I am often struck by the meaning of the Rodney King question,
“Can we all get along?” How many of us knew what a profound
thing had been said by that man? We’ll never forget: Well, can
we?
((all of the firedogs))
This is true. Here they are the epitome of naivety.
Dad – if you’re still around, check out Alonso’s lap time at Barcelona.
Jeebus they’re fast this year.
