It seems this Friday just happened to be another Friday, in that, once again a few Arabs, seemed to be a little pissed off with the ‘promised’ pace in the Arab Spring’s reforms and progress…
First off, from Tunisia…
Tunisian rally faces off tear gas
…Tunisian police used teargas yesterday to disperse stone-throwing demonstrators demanding progress in reforms promised after the president’s removal in the first of the Arab Spring revolutions.
More than 700 protesters gathered in Kasbah square in the centre of the Tunisian capital but were quickly dispersed by hundreds of police officers in riot gear. Protesters shouted “We are not afraid” as police pushed them out of the square, where Prime Minister Beji Caid Sebsi has his office.
Protests also took place in Sidi Bouzid, the central Tunisian town where a vegetable seller set himself on fire last December, setting in train protests that brought to an end the 23-year rule of President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali.
From Egypt…
Egyptians extend protests at Tahrir Square
Egyptians gathered in Cairo’s Tahrir Square on Friday, after a week of demonstrations, to tell the ruling generals they are failing to meet demands to reform the system…
From Syria…
1 Million Protesters Push Syria’s Assad to the Brink…
An estimated 1 million Syrians took to the streets Friday to press for the ouster of President Bashar Assad, whose use of force and offers of dialogue have failed to stop a four-month revolt. At least 32 protesters were killed around the country, including more than 20 in the capital of Damascus…
From Jordan…
Jordanian police beat up journalists covering demonstration
…At least 10 people, mostly journalists, were injured yesterday when police tried to stop clashes between pro-reform demonstrators and government supporters in central Amman.
Police used batons to disperse the clashes outside city hall, beating and injuring nine journalists who were wearing orange vests marked “press,” an AFP reporter at the scene witnessed. The wounded included an AFP photographer and a female activist.
“We were beaten by police, although we were wearing special press vests,” said the photographer. “We thought we would be safe when we stood next to the police and away from the clashes.”
A photographer who works for another international news agency said he was ordered by police not to take pictures, while New York Times reporter Kareem Fahim was beaten by 10 policemen.
Around 2,000 people, including Islamists and youth groups, marched from the nearby Al Husseini mosque to the city hall before the clashes occurred with hundreds of government supporters.
“Rulers, we want to reform the regime. We want the palace to hear the voices of Jordanians,” the demonstrators chanted.
They carried banners reading “We need political, economic and social reforms for future generations,” and “It’s our right to fight corruption.”
From Bahrain…
Thousands rally for political reform in Bahrain
Tens of thousands of Bahrainis shouting “one man, one vote” attended a rally for political reform held by a leading opposition party on Friday, days before the group decides whether to pull out of national reform talks. Bahrain’s Sunni rulers have launched a national dialogue to discuss reforms and heal deep rifts in the Gulf island kingdom…
Now, lets put some proper perspective on the problem…
…Now, before Tunisia and Egypt even have new governments in place, the IMF has jumped to offer them loans for vast infrastructure projects in the desert—as if the fund didn’t know that young Arabs there want ways to start businesses and have careers, not temporary construction jobs.
The Greek debacle and the North African drama raise existential questions about the IMF. Responsible governments have no business borrowing vast sums from abroad, rather than from domestic sources. That’s what tinpot regimes do. And lending even more to borrowers who can’t pay what they already owe? That’s what loan sharks and mafiosi do.
The IMF’s business model sabotages properly functioning capitalism, victimizing ordinary people while benefiting the elites. Do we need international agencies to enable irresponsible—verging on immoral—borrowing and lending? Instead of dreaming up too-clever-by-half schemes to stumble through crises after they happen, why not just stop imprudent banks from accommodating foreign borrowing by feckless governments? After all, it’s French and German taxpayers who are on the hook—not just the Greeks and the Irish…
Now, today in Libya, we’ve officially recognized the Rebels, freeing up the $34 Billion that we had froze, shortly after Qaddafi had announced that he was earmarking that specified amount to the African Development Bank…
U.S. formally recognizes rebel group as Libya’s government
…The chief effect of recognition may be financial. The rebels have been pleading with Washington and other governments for months to release frozen Libyan assets, including $34 billion held in U.S. banks, and that now appears increasingly likely.
At the Istanbul meeting, France said it was taking steps to unfreeze $250 million, while Italy said it was moving to unfreeze $100 million. U.S. officials said it would take time to release the Libyan money because of legal restrictions, but the task is easier if the council is the recognized government.
The rebels have said they need $3.5 billion this year to prosecute the war and administer the cities and towns they control.
Here’s a juicy little tidbit about those very same Al QaedaLibyan Rebels…
Now, speaking about ‘prosecuting’ and ‘administering the cities and towns they control’. The House of Saud is in full panic mode…
Saudis Seeking Arms amid Growing Fears
Saudi Arabia’s hunger for weapons has grown with the upcoming US withdrawal from Iraq and instability in Yemen and Bahrain.
…”Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf countries in general realize that they must rely on themselves to defend themselves during this critical period marked by the beginning of a US withdrawal from Iraq,” said Anwar Eshki, director of the Middle East Institute for Strategic Studies. [...]
Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil exporter, has traditionally bought US and British arms, but it showed no hesitation in contacting a new supplier, Berlin, with which it is negotiating the purchase of 200 Leopard tanks, according to reports in Germany.
The order is worth some two billion Euros ($2.8 billion), German magazine Der Spiegel said on its website.
“The kingdom is looking for weapons in Germany and even in Russia, knowing that with the vacuum left by the Americans in Iraq, Iran might begin to extend its influence to the Levant reaching out to the Mediterranean sea,” said Eshki.
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal, whose country sent about 1,500 troops to Bahrain, freeing up local security forces to crush a month-long uprising, recently reiterated Riyadh’s rejection of “foreign adventures” in Bahrain.
“Persian [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council ([P]GCC) states have strategy to maintain their security,” Faisal said on July 5…
As, b at M of A, pointed out some of the unique features of those 200 Main Battle Tanks…
German Tanks For Saudi ‘Peace Support Operations’
…But the question is not really about a $1+ billion tank deal with the Saudi, they do have lots of U.S. build M1A1 as well as British Challengers and could easily get more, the question is about the specific version of this first class tank the Saudis have asked for.
The Leopard II A7+ (PSO) variant was specifically developed for “Peace Support Operations”. Such Orwellian termed operations, as this video of a pretty lousy military show depicts, consist of suppressing demonstrations and rebellions as well as general fighting in urban terrain.
Hmmm… Yeppers, it’s all those pesky Iranians fault…
Btw, can we finally be rid of this annoying Beach Boy earworm…?
…There is almost “near certainty” that Netanyahu is “planning an attack [on Iran] … and it will probably be in September before the vote on a Palestinian state. And he’s also hoping to draw the United States into the conflict,” Baer explained.
….It should be noted that the Iranian regime is quite capable of triggering a war with the United States on its own through some combination of colossal stupidity and sheer hatred. In fact, Baer says, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard would welcome a war. They are “paranoid.” They are “worried about … what’s happening to their country economically, in terms of the oil embargo and other sanctions.” And they are worried about a population that increasingly despises the regime.
They need an external enemy. Because we are leaving Iraq, it’s Israel. But in order to make this threat believable, they would love an attack on their nuclear facilities, love to go to war in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia and Iraq and hit us where they could. Their defense is asymmetrical. We can take out all of their armored units. It’s of little difference to them, same with their surface-to-air missile sites. It would make little difference because they would use terrorism. They would do serious damage to our fleet in the Gulf.
Given all that, is it possible that the United States would allow Israel to attack when the president knows “we would be forced” to join the war on Israel’s side?
Baer’s response: “the President is up for re-election next year” and Israel is “truly out of control.”
What happens when you see 100 F-16′s approaching Iraq and there is a call to the White House [from Netanyahu] that says “We’re going in, we’re at war with Iran”? What does the President of the United States do? He has little influence over Bibi Netanyahu. …We can’t stop him. And he knows it.
Hmmm…! I suppose not…!
Now, this was some great news which actually did instill some hope in my cold, cynical heart…
Thousands of Israelis and Arabs march in Jerusalem to support Palestinian independence…
Several MKs participate in the ‘March for Independence,’ the first such Jewish-Arab event in 20 years…
Arab League seeking full status for Palestine at UN…
The Arab League will ask the United Nations to upgrade the Palestinians to full member status, a draft statement from a league meeting in Qatar said yesterday. “It was decided to go to the United Nations to request the recognition of the state of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital and to move ahead and request a full membership,” said the communique.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the move, saying if the Palestinians really wanted peace, “they would sit down for negotiations, without preconditions. There is no replacement for negotiations. Unilateral steps will not bring peace closer and will not bring any solution.”…
Even the ever-odious Mustache of Fury just had to chime in… …PA bid for UN recognition means ‘next to nothing’…

Excellent post, CT. Thank you!
John Bolton is a cyst on humanity. “Next to nothing”
Best thing the Arab League ever did was to support the Palestinians at the UN. I really don’t why it took so long to appreciate the futility of negotiations with the Israelis. The second Likud PM Shamir said it correctly, that he would have the Palestinians in negotiations for ten years while a half million settlers entered the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and at that time, Gaza.
Netanyahu’s trap is negotiations, and the US by this time is fully aware that negotiations will not stop the colonization, not even delay it.
Good luck to the Palestinians in September. They are finally wising up.
And thanks for this review of latest events concerning the Middle East Spring. The momentum toward democracy in each of these countries is continuing, in spite of set backs.

The Saudis are planning to suppress demonstrations with tanks. A fight with Iran needs ships, planes and anti missile systems to protect oil tankers because if Iran blocks the Persian Gulf then there is no oil and the Saudis are broke.
If Iran sends in tanks to Saudi Arabia then the Saudis need tanks designed to fight other tanks in battles in the desert not urban areas.
This is telling it means the Saudis won’t create jobs for the people in their economy but will spend on weapons to keep them down.

We could shoot their planes down and avoid $300+ dollars a barrel of oil. Its all a matter of National Interest what is best for America and Israel is not in the best interest of Bibi.
Bibi needs a war and fear of a war to keep power. I doubt Obama has the Stones to do what I suggest but we do have options.
We can’t let Bibi, Obama etc say we don’t have options we can’t let them write the rules of the game.

Syrian security forces have killed more than 1,700 people since March, according to human rights groups.

Syria with a much smaller population than Egypt has had more protesters killed
but can still turn out a million people Cool! I am impressed forget Iran Bibi is losing a friend much closer to home.
A corrupt Syria is a weak Syria Israel’s greatest fear should be the Arab States getting a Democracy that responds to the people.
Jordan is our puppet. Jordan does not have oil its expendable, Jordan has a bad human rights record America wants Syria to fall but we have no real reason to support Jordan much except that we are worried about Domino Theory.
It would be hard to sell sending troops to Jordan to the American people. It would be hard to get the CIA to send Mercs there when other countries with oil are in trouble.
We made the Arab States weak and dependent on us by encouraging corrupt rulers to get rich stealing from their people.
Now that weakness in their economies means they can’t feed their people provide them cheap gas or jobs where they can afford food, gas much less get married.
All the Arab countries have a huge young population coming of working age, marrying age right now.
Either good jobs are provided so they can eat never mind get married or the Arab states will fall.
Remember the Arab countries are more conservative than we are no marriage likely means no sex.
I will bet on the human sex drive to win this fight.

Wow did you here that in church? Those people are not thinking with their dicks. Those young people are highly educated not savages. So dont act like they are any less human than anyone else.
They will fight for the same reason any populous fights (freedom, liberty, equality, democracy, Etc) and thats all the ambition any populous needs.
Not to mention these uprisings are not just being fought by men alone.
They will fight for the same reason any populous fights (freedom, liberty, equality, democracy, Etc) and thats all the ambition any populous needs.
Survival needs must be met first before people can think about achieving other goals thats food, shelter (can’t buy a home with no job) and yes sex.
Its prudish to think that sex is not a factor no job means no sex never mind the embarrassment of living with your parents and being a burden to them.
Even educated people think with their dicks men go to college to get good jobs in part because they want to learn and in part to make more money and meet girls.
Women go to college to learn and in part to meet future husbands who make more money.
Money the lack of it is the major cause of arguments in marriage.
It is naive to not see the connection between lack of food, jobs and yes sex pushing these rebellions here in America as well as the Arab countries.
“Forget the Dow and the GDP. Here’s the latest economic indicator: The U.S. birth rate has fallen to its lowest level in at least a century as many people apparently decided they couldn’t afford more mouths to feed.
The birth rate dropped for the second year in a row since the recession began in 2007. Births fell 2.6 percent last year even as the population grew, numbers released Friday by the National Center for Health Statistics show.”

We are no different than the Arabs we just have different options than they do to address our shared problems of no jobs, higher food and gas prices.
Trying to imply racism because I mention sex as a factor is lame or are you arguing sex and the desire for marriage and kids is not a driving force in Arab discontent.
Or that sex and the desire for marriage and kids is not shared by educated Americans?
It certainly seems that money is a the biggest factor in America at least for divorce.

People support democracy when the majority of people believe it will help them have better lives that means food on the table, jobs and yes enough cash to live comfortably enough to get married and have kids.
The Arab states are not providing that however any system that provides what people want will satisfy people.
The problem for democracy is the people in the Arab states see America a democracy as backing their evil rulers Democracy gets tainted because America is connected to it.
American foreign policy needs to stop being Justice for Just Us.
Who ever ends up taking control in the Arab countries no matter what system of government they choose will likely have problems with America because we backed their evil undemocratic rulers and called them democracies or at least free countries and our friends when they were not democracies or free.
“gah!” is right, CT
always appreciate your Middle East updates.
Nice back pedaling there. First you are asserting that because you believe that most Arabs are ulta-conservative and cant get laid without getting married that they will be so horny that they will fight.
Traditionally horny men are not portrayed as reasonable.
“Remember the Arab countries are more conservative than we are no marriage likely means no sex.

Right there you are saying that human sex drive will “win this fight”. You are not saying that they want to have kids, you said they want to fuck and cant cant fuck unless they get married, and they cant get married because their countries are oppressive, so in order to get their dicks wet they have to fight. So like brainless animals they will fight.
Instead of admitting that you siad that wrong (at best) you comeback trying to say that you implied all that other crap. I wonder why you just didnt say it like that in the first place?

Saudi society they have their secret police make sure that men and woman do not even talk unless the woman has a male relative present. I am sure you have heard about Honor killings, or if you want some factual data look at the number of unwed teen mothers in the Arab world relative to America ( my baseline of comparison) the Arab states are conservative.
Traditionally horny men are not portrayed as reasonable.
And men think about sex how many times during the day:)

The desire to have sex results in kids especially when there is no birth control and in countries where social programs to help unwed mothers are few and religious/social stigma for unwed mothers is high well either people get married or change the religious/ social stigma without widely available access to birth control like we have in America I assume people will fight for jobs so they can afford to get married and have sex.
As far as fighting like brainless animals continuing the species is a drive second to food and maybe tied with shelter there is nothing wrong with fighting to survive and wanting enough wealth to have sex.
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is often portrayed in the shape of a pyramid, with the largest and most fundamental levels of needs at the bottom, and the need for self-actualization at the top.[1][6]
The most fundamental and basic four layers of the pyramid contain what Maslow called “deficiency needs” or “d-needs”: esteem , friendship and love, security, and physical needs. With the exception of the most fundamental (physiological) needs, if these “deficiency needs” are not met, the body gives no physical indication but the individual feels anxious and tense. Maslow’s theory suggests that the most basic level of needs must be met before the individual will strongly desire (or focus motivation upon) the secondary or higher level needs. Maslow also coined the term Metamotivation to describe the motivation of people who go beyond the scope of the basic needs and strive for constant betterment.[7] Metamotivated people are driven by B-needs (Being Needs), instead of deficiency needs (D-Needs).
Physiological needs
For the most part, physiological needs are obvious — they are the literal requirements for human survival. If these requirements are not met, the human body simply cannot continue to function.
Air, water, and food are metabolic requirements for survival in all animals, including humans. Clothing and shelter provide necessary protection from the elements. The intensity of the human sexual instinct is shaped more by sexual competition than maintaining a birth rate adequate to survival of the species.
Safety needs
With their physical needs relatively satisfied, the individual’s safety needs take precedence and dominate behavior. In the absence of physical safety — due to terrorist attack, war, natural disaster, or, in cases of family violence, childhood abuse, etc — people (re-)experience post-traumatic stress disorder and trans-generational trauma transfer. In the absence of economic safety — due to economic crisis and lack of work opportunities – these safety needs manifest themselves in such things as a preference for job security, grievance procedures for protecting the individual from unilateral authority, savings accounts, insurance policies, reasonable disability accommodations, and the like.
Safety and Security needs include:
Personal security
Financial security
Health and well-being
Safety net against accidents/illness and their adverse impacts
Love and belonging
After physiological and safety needs are fulfilled, the third layer of human needs are social and involve feelings of belongingness. The need is especially strong in childhood and can over-ride the need for safety as witnessed in children who cling to abusive parents which is sometimes called Stockholm syndrome. The absence of this aspect of Maslow’s hierarchy – due to hospitalism, neglect, shunning, ostracism etc – can impact individual’s ability to form and maintain emotionally significant relationships in general, such as:
Friendship
Intimacy
Family
Humans need to feel a sense of belonging and acceptance, whether it comes from a large social group, such as clubs, office culture, religious groups, professional organizations, sports teams, gangs, or small social connections (family members, intimate partners, mentors, close colleagues, confidants). They need to love and be loved (sexually and non-sexually) by others. In the absence of these elements, many people become susceptible to loneliness, social anxiety, and clinical depression. This need for belonging can often overcome the physiological and security needs, depending on the strength of the peer pressure; an anorexic, for example, may ignore the need to eat and the security of health for a feeling of control and belonging.[citation needed]
Esteem
All humans have a need to be respected and to have self-esteem and self-respect. Esteem presents the normal human desire to be accepted and valued by others. People need to engage themselves to gain recognition and have an activity or activities that give the person a sense of contribution, to feel self-valued, be it in a profession or hobby. Imbalances at this level can result in low self-esteem or an inferiority complex. People with low self-esteem need respect from others. They may seek fame or glory, which again depends on others. Note, however, that many people with low self-esteem will not be able to improve their view of themselves simply by receiving fame, respect, and glory externally, but must first accept themselves internally. Psychological imbalances such as depression can also prevent one from obtaining self-esteem on both levels.
Most people have a need for a stable self-respect and self-esteem. Maslow noted two versions of esteem needs, a lower one and a higher one. The lower one is the need for the respect of others, the need for status, recognition, fame, prestige, and attention. The higher one is the need for self-respect, the need for strength, competence, mastery, self-confidence, independence and freedom. The latter one ranks higher because it rests more on inner competence won through experience. Deprivation of these needs can lead to an inferiority complex, weakness and helplessness.
Maslow also states that even though these are examples of how the quest for knowledge is separate from basic needs he warns that these “two hierarchies are interrelated rather than sharply separated” (Maslow 97). This means that this level of need, as well as the next and highest level, are not strict, separate levels but closely related to others, and this is possibly the reason that these two levels of need are left out of most textbooks.
Self-actualization
Main article: Self-actualization
“What a man can be, he must be.”[8] This forms the basis of the perceived need for self-actualization. This level of need pertains to what a person’s full potential is and realizing that potential. Maslow describes this desire as the desire to become more and more what one is, to become everything that one is capable of becoming.[9] This is a broad definition of the need for self-actualization, but when applied to individuals the need is specific. For example one individual may have the strong desire to become an ideal parent, in another it may be expressed athletically, and in another it may be expressed in painting, pictures, or inventions.[10] As mentioned before, in order to reach a clear understanding of this level of need one must first not only achieve the previous needs, physiological, safety, love, and esteem, but master these needs.
Self-transcendence
Viktor Frankl later added Self-transcendence [11]

As far as sex being irrational goes it is interesting to note that the American indians were almost wiped out by prudish English attitudes about sex at the time.
Mexico, South America heck other English colonies settled at later dates when the prudishness had faded resulted in killing yes and thanks to disease some complete wiping out of the locals but nothing as bad as what happened to the American Indians.
Its weird seeing that those attitudes about sex still survive in America today.
Notice the huge mixed populations in other former colonies as opposed to America.
Not thinking about sex denying it has consequences look at how
Nietzsche attacked Christians, as symbolized by the Priestly class in his works, because they tricked the Noble class into submission. Superior strength and domination characterize the Nobles’ morality while the Priestly class promoted humility, meagerness, non-violence, etc. Nietzsche claimed that the Christian morality, a slave morality, is killing us. The Christians brainwashed the Nobles by forcing them to believe in their own morality, namely calling strength, aggression, and violence bad and humility, love, and peace good. This in effect revealed the Priests’ “will to power.” Nietzsche correctly stated that slave morality is killing everyone in light of his Proto-Existentialism, however, the claim that some are violently aggressive while others are not does not sufficiently negate the will to power theory.
Nietzsche insists that we enter a world depraved by slave morality. The Christians teach that we should avoid wrong desires or sins of the flesh. Their list of do’s and do not’s, exemplified in “don’t drink,” “don’t smoke,” “don’t watch R-rated movies,” etc. create quite of conservative “law,” many of which the Scriptures vaguely condemn.
One growing up under Christian morality begins to see that the Law is impossible to uphold. The constant failure requires an incessant need for God’s grace. This sustaining tension is, according to Nietzsche, where the battle lies. A person loses confidence when he constantly bounces back and forth between good and bad, or right and wrong. The Priestly class wins every time in this fight because the Nobles allow their guilt to overcome their strength.
The slave morality, then, kills everyone because no one may effectively determine his own life, or existence. We are left to follow the status quo of conservative moralism, and when we battle with that morality, we fall prey to “sin” and reinforce the normative pietism. If one simply embraced his freedom, he would realize his own god-like power, and also understand fully his past lack of power. All will to power but those successful ones currently do so only through trickery and a rejection of their own humanity.

“Sex is Violent ” Jane’s Addiction and yes every revolution has sexual undercurrents Sex however is not evil in of itself its as natural to fight for your right to Party as it is to have food. I admit food comes first.
You entirely missed my point. Which was that Arabs are not solely basing any uprisings on being horny. They are using their brains to think, and of course the right to have children in an safe environment weighs heavy on their decision to revolt. But its hugely wrong to assert that an peoples want for sexual gratification will be the main driving force behind a people fighting for what they believe to be right.
Its human reasoning and thought, human minds that drive people to fight for their rights. Asserting that the main drive is sex is naive and insulting to an entire race of people.
And you should use quotations to show what you were quoting and what you were writing yourself.
