MENA Mashup: Handing a Monkey a Hand Grenade, Real Men Go To Tehran, and SEAL Fail

5:36 pm in Uncategorized by CTuttle

The esteemed Col. Lang, a signatory of this letter to both Kerry and Lavrov, pointed out this excellent article…

De Borchgrave on Syrian government guilt in re the 21st of August gas deaths.

“What is becoming increasingly clear is that Assad wasn’t behind the Aug. 21 chemical weapons attack in an eastern suburb of Damascus. The evidence gathered by U.N. inspectors may lead to pro-al-Qaida operatives in the resistance movement. The purpose of such an operation would be to further discredit Assad’s regime and sabotage peace talks.” De Borchgrave

——————————–

When I saw this section of Arnaud De Borchgrave’s column yesterday, I contacted him so as to know this was his opinion or that of the Russians. He assures me that this is his opinion. pl

Please do read the entire article, originally entitled: The US could be supporting the wrong people in Syria…

…The purpose of such an operation would be to further discredit Assad’s regime and sabotage peace talks.

Russia is playing its Syrian hand deftly and prudently. It warned the Obama administration that U.S. military intervention would have “catastrophic consequences” for the entire region by giving radical Islam a winning hand.

But some Russian voices objected to the softer tone of the men in the Kremlin. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin tweeted that the West “is playing with the Islamic world like a monkey with a grenade.”

Some newspapers criticized Russian leaders as overly prudent.

Komsomolskaya Pravda, a mass circulation tabloid, warned, “If optimists in the Pentagon believe that Russia will limit itself to warnings and expressions of anger, like it did over Iraq and Yugoslavia, they may well be mistaken … Times have changed. There’s too much at stake and Moscow won’t retreat … Who’ll cave first — Putin or Obama?”

Next to the Russian media’s fire-and-brimstone warnings, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had made clear that Russia has “no plans to go to war with anyone.”

The Syrian civil war, with its influx of foreign fighters, including a powerful contingent of pro-al-Qaida combatants, many of them recruited online, have led some Russian commentators to predict Moscow will soon be increasing weapons supplies to Syria.

At the same time, Russia will be negotiating still closer ties with Iran coupled with a cut back on areas of cooperation with the United States, some Russian experts said.

Before increasing aid to Syria’s underground resistance, U.S. intelligence should nail down beyond the shadow of a doubt the true identity and plans of the underground resistance. Or at least of the commanders of units they are dealing with.

During the recent four-day siege of Nairobi’s Westgate shopping mall, al-Shabaab jihadists “raped, tortured, beheaded, dismembered, castrated, gouged out eyes, amputated fingers and hung hostages on hooks from the roof,” a forensic medical doctor in Kenya told FrontPageMagazine.com, a conservative online magazine edited by David Horowitz and published by the Freedom Center in Los Angeles.

For jihadists — or “holy warriors” — these were ritual killings “consistent with a growing global jihadist MO (modus operandi),” writes FrontPage’s Dawn Perlmutter. “Similar acts of torture, rape, beheading and mutilation regularly occur in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Egypt, Syria and other countries,” says Perlmutter. {…}

Taking on the Damascus-Tehran-Moscow axis at this late stage in Syria’s civil war would put the United States in the same camp as AQAM — al-Qaida and its associated movements. This would also jeopardize negotiations with Iran aimed at abandoning its quest for nuclear weapons.

Seriously, pups, I’m aghast at the clusterf*ck that is our FP…! On the one hand, you have Obama asking Congress to ‘delay’ the latest round of sanctions on Iran, then, roll out this IC propaganda…!

Followed up by this noise…

Obama says Iran a year away from nuclear bomb

US President Barack Obama said in an interview released Saturday that Iran was “a year or more away” from getting a nuclear bomb, in a clear sign of discord with Israel.

Obama also told the Associated Press that Iranian President Hassan Rouhani had staked his credibility on dialogue and it was up to the United States to see if he had the political weight to follow through.

The president’s timetable contrasts with that of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who has warned that Iran has been building faster centrifuges to enrich uranium which would allow it to jump across an Israeli red line within “weeks.”

Well, that was certainly a quick response dontcha think…! Hmmm…?

Let’s be clear who is responsible these daze…!

Anyways, when I’d first heard about a ‘western’ strike in Somalia, I’d suspected Mossad, yet… AP sources: Navy SEALs raid Somali town in strike aimed at al-Shabab militants, and f*cked it up…

US Navy SEAL raid in Somalia fails to nab al-Qaida suspect in Kenya mall attack

U.S. Navy SEALs carried out a pre-dawn raid Saturday on a coastal town in southern Somalia looking for a specific al-Qaida suspect linked to the Nairobi shopping mall attack, but did not get their target, a U.S. military official told The Associated Press.

A former U.S. military official also confirmed the raid by the SEALs, but no other details have been provided. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the raid by name. The Pentagon declined comment.

In Somalia, officials said international military forces carried out a pre-dawn strike Saturday against foreign fighters in the town of Barawe. Officials said the strike was aimed at “high-profile” targets.

The strike was carried out in the hours before morning prayers in Barawe, the same town where Navy SEALs four years ago killed a most-wanted al-Qaida operative, the officials said.

However, it wasn’t a total wash, as it were for us… US forces capture al-Qaida leader in Libya wanted by US for 1998 embassy attacks in Africa. Oorah…?

In wrapping up, I do wonder about these newsworthy links…

US was so sure it was striking Syria it made ‘warning calls’ to Israel’s leaders

At height of crisis, Netanyahu was given formal notice of imminent attack on Assad; Obama’s change of heart said to have dented Israel’s faith in president’s ‘military option’ for Iran…

That was right about the time of those two ‘failed’ launches in the Med…!

Last but not the least, link… Iran, Russia to continue negotiations on S-300 missile system

Debunking George Will

6:37 pm in Uncategorized by CTuttle

George Will, in today’s WaPoo, served up this historically-inaccurate, factually-challenged, hasbara screech…

Skip the lecture on Israel’s ‘risks for peace’

The creation of Israel did not involve the destruction of a Palestinian state, there having been no such state since the Romans arrived. And if the Jewish percentage of the world’s population were today what it was when the Romans ruled Palestine, there would be 200 million Jews. After a uniquely hazardous passage through two millennia without a homeland, there are 13 million Jews.

There are 12 million Palestinians, half are displaced outside of Palestine and many more are IDP in Palestine…

Do you suppose Will’s head would implode if he knew about this little reality…?

Jews and Arabs Share Recent Ancestry

…a new genetic study shows that many Arabs and Jews are closely related. More than 70% of Jewish men and half of the Arab men whose DNA was studied inherited their Y chromosomes from the same paternal ancestors who lived in the region within the last few thousand years.

The results match historical accounts that Moslem Arabs are descended from Christians and Jews who lived in the southern Levant, a region that includes Israel and the Sinai. They were descendants of a core population that lived in the area since prehistoric times. And in a recent study of 1371 men from around the world, geneticist Michael Hammer from the University of Arizona in Tucson found that the Y chromosome in Middle Eastern Arabs was almost indistinguishable from that of Jews.

What is also lost on poor Georgie is the fact that Islam didn’t exist when the Romans first arrived in Palestine, in fact, conventionally, and as far as Western history is concerned, the end of the Roman era is placed as early as 330 AD, and as late as 480 AD. What seems to be lost on Georgie is the fact Muhammad wasn’t even born until 570 AD…

Ironically, the first Palestinian Caliphate embraced both the Christians and Jews…

…In 638 CE, following the Siege of Jerusalem, the Caliph Omar Ibn al-Khattab and Safforonius, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, signed Al-Uhda al-’Omariyya (The Umariyya Covenant), an agreement that stipulated the rights and obligations of all non-Muslims in Palestine. Christians and Jews where considered People of the Book, enjoyed some protection but had to pay a special poll tax called jizyah ("tribute"). During the early years of Muslim control of the city, a small permanent Jewish population returned to Jerusalem after a 500-year absence.

But, I digress…

More Georgie…

…Palestine has a seemingly limitless capacity for eliciting nonsense from afar, as it did recently when British Prime Minister David Cameron referred to Gaza as a "prison camp." In a sense it is, but not in the sense Cameron intended. His implication was that Israel is the cruel imprisoner. Gaza’s actual misfortune is to be under the iron fist of Hamas, a terrorist organization.

In May, a flotilla launched from Turkey approached Gaza in order to provoke a confrontation with Israel, which, like Egypt, administers a blockade to prevent arms from reaching Hamas. The flotilla’s pretense was humanitarian relief for Gaza – where the infant mortality rate is lower and life expectancy is higher than in Turkey.

Israelis younger than 50 have no memory of their nation within the 1967 borders set by the 1949 armistice that ended the War of Independence. The rest of the world seems to have no memory at all concerning the intersecting histories of Palestine and the Jewish people. [...]

In the 62 years since this homeland was founded on one-sixth of 1 percent of the land of what is carelessly and inaccurately called "the Arab world," Israelis have never known an hour of real peace. Patronizing American lectures on the reality of risks and the desirableness of peace, which once were merely fatuous, are now obscene.

Funny thing, that while Will is bemoaning the 1,072 Israelis killed, at least 6,348 Palestinians have been killed since September 29, 2000. Some other pesky factiods; 0 Israeli homes have been demolished by Palestinians and 24,145 Palestinian homes have been demolished by Israel since 1967, and, Israel currently has 223 Jewish-only settlements and ‘outposts’ built on confiscated Palestinian land. Palestinians do not have any settlements on Israeli land.

Sorry, Georgie-Porgie, but it’s your views and distortions that are obscene…!

Karzai’s Power Grab

2:30 pm in Uncategorized by CTuttle

Today’s WaPoo had this bit of news buried deep…

The Afghan government has drafted proposed changes to election law that would remove all three foreign members from the body that investigates fraud, limit the number of women in parliament and establish a host of new qualifications for candidates to run for office.

The thorough rewriting of the 2005 election law has raised the prospect that President Hamid Karzai intends to respond to the chaos of last year’s presidential election by imposing changes that would give the government more control over the commission that documented the scope of electoral fraud. The five-member Electoral Complaints Commission — including three international members appointed by the U.N. envoy to Afghanistan — calculated that Karzai lost his first-round majority last August by the amount of vote-rigging and would need to face a run-off.

Huh…? I’m sure that will clean up the whole election process! Karzai couldn’t possibly be more blatant in his power grab…

"People are very worried about this law," said one foreign official in Kabul who works on election issues. "It was so substantially rewritten, and nobody really knew about it." [...]

According to the draft proposal, the new Electoral Complaints Commission would have no foreign members appointed by the United Nations. One member would be chosen by the Supreme Court, two by the parliament, one by the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission and one by the president.

In addition to changing the commission, the draft proposes limiting the number of female members in the lower house of the legislature, known as the Wolesi Jirga, to a maximum of two per each of the country’s 34 provinces. The current law stipulates that the number of female representatives must be at least twice the number of provinces. While there is some dispute about the interpretation of this amendment, one international official in Kabul said it would "substantially reduce" the number of women in the 249-member lower house of parliament.

The draft also proposes a series of requirements to run for president, including having a bachelor’s degree and a "good reputation" and being a "wise and brave person" who has not been "affected by psychic diseases." Presidential candidates would also have to deposit 5 million afghanis (about $100,000), which would be refunded only if the candidate wins or receives at least 20 percent of the vote. Of the 32 presidential candidates listed by the election commission in the final results of last year’s vote, only two cleared this threshold.

"It seems quite discriminatory," Hakim said. "It would be a good opportunity for warlords and drug lords and mafia to be the most likely candidates."

Another tin pot despot being propped up by our national blood and treasure. We never learn! I fervently hope there will be significant blowback by Gates, Clinton, Nato, etc. against this brazen power grab!

Any thoughts…?
