As I read diaries here at Oxdown, I have noticed that "raw links" do not seem to work. I do not know why this is so, but one of the aspects of my chosen career field (Software Quality Assurance and Testing) is to deal with what IS and the raw links just don’t seem to work while embedded links DO work.
Here’s what I mean by "raw links." I am using this YouTube as an example (because I like the music). http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=fEOlTZGuLKM
Now if my theory is correct, that link will not show up active when I publish this diary. But, here’s Little Feat Rock and Roll Doctor linked just pretty as you please. The difference? I embedded the link and gave it a name.
Now for some folks, you can use the link button for the diary body by highlighting the words you want to use to name the link, clicking the link button and pasting the link into the box. Unfortunately, I just can’t seem to get that to work correctly for me. So here’s how to write the appropriate HTML (HyperTextMetaLanguage) code yourself!
Now first thing, I am going to have to explain is that HTML uses the carat marks (the "less than" and "greater than" symbols that are on the comma and period keys on most keyboards) to signify that an HTML command is following. For the purpose of this explanation, I am going to substitute the left bracket symbol ([) and right bracket (]) so that you can see the whole chain of the code. So you’ll have to remember to replace the brackets with the carats, but I have faith in you!
So here it is: [a href="PasteYourLinkRightHere"]Now Give Your Link A Name[/a]
In order that is:
Left pointing carat symbol, a, space, href=", your link, quotes, right pointing carat symbol, your link name, left pointing carat again, slash, a, right pointing carat.
Using another YouTube: [a href="http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=SkZsSydzQjM"]Little Feat Fat Man In The Bath Tub[/a]
And in "real time" Little Feat Fat Man In The Bath Tub
I hope this has made sense and is helpful to you. If you are still a bit confused, just check out what happens in comments when you highlight a word and click one of the other buttons to see what HTML does. Or test it out in comments as comments work the same way and use the same code as diaries.

Interesting. I’ve never had a problem embedding links, either on the Mac using Safari or on my old PC with Windows Explorer. I just paste it in, as you say above but can’t do on your application.
It’s worth noting that, at least in the comments, embedded links do not work in preview but do work when the comment is posted. Somehow the preview adds some extraneous data to the link, but it doesn’t affect the link when the comment goes up.
I’m using Mac as well but have never been able to just paste the link in the box as I would assume you can do. And that’s using Safari or Firefox either one.
Fortunately, there was a kind soul at another site who explained how to do things a couple of years or so ago and that’s how I learned. So thought I would just “pay it forward” if you will.
And as you predicted, dakine01, your YouTube link isn’t “hot” while your embedded link is.
Also I have noticed on another site that a raw link sends the comment to moderation, while an embedded link does not.
Thank you for posting this
This is a test. (Don’t try this at home.)
Link
This is how the link should look when embedded.
Hmmm….The active link points to this diary instead of http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=SkZsSydzQjM
I have no idea Audrey as it looks like it should have worked correctly. But I think if somehow the actual link does not get pasted into the proper spot, it links back to the current page so maybe that’s what happened. Try it again if you would please.
I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the Fat Man link.
One of my favorites.

Annnnnnnd, he rolls the dice!

I are an idiot
Bingo.
I never could figure that shit out.
Thanks.
Hmmm…No, I used the link icon in the comment box to create it and the youtube link was all I had copied, I think it was a problem with the preview function perhaps combined with my strange code which is no longer visible.
Thanks anyway.
As I said, it WAS just a test anyway. Now I know it doesn’t work. Had been wanting to see if the software would accept that code. It does, but I think you can’t use preview with it.
Thanks for this post, dakine01. I’m sure folks have found it helpful.
Yeah, I could never get the paste function to work when using the link box which is why I wrote this diary. By typing it out by hand, I very rarely have any problems at all.
Glad I can help folks out.

I typed out the HTML code.
Below I’ll use the link icon.
