Now, some folks may have noticed (ha!) that I have not been posting too much these last few months. Those who actually know me understand that I’ve had a very good reason for this. However, I have still continued to surf the news sites each day and keep up with various blogs as well. I figure Mr Pierce does such a fine job eviscerating the Zombie-eyed-granny-starver and so many other idiots, that there really isn’t much I can say and definitely can’t improve on. As well, Dean Baker continues to easily refute the gibberish of so many Beltway Village Idiots Pundits and Politicians, so there’s not much need for my rants.
So, I laugh when I see where someone has butt shot himself while thinking of all the “butt calls” I have received from family and friends. And I get a little sad when I see legislators in my home state embarrassing themselves with their diatribes against teaching evolution. (Note: Gravity is still considered a theory as well, maybe some of these folks complaining about teaching evolution “cuz it’s only a theory” should maybe be invited to test that gravitational theory from the top of the capital building – rhetorically speaking of course.)
But then, I wind up reading something that is so incredibly stupid and disingenuous, that I am moved to take a whack at it on my own. Today, I reached this point when I read this idiocy from Robert Samuelson at the Washington Post:
Judging by the political reaction, you’d think that Paul Ryan’s budget takes a meat ax to Medicare and threatens economic havoc for the elderly. Just the opposite is true: The Ryan budget spares older people from almost any change or sacrifice — and that’s the problem. We have (and, to be fair, this is mainly the doing of Democrats and their intellectual apologists) made those 65 and over into a politically protected class, of which nothing is expected and everything is given. It is impossible to have an honest debate about the budget — and government’s size and role — unless this changes, because aiding the elderly is now the main thing the federal government does. If you remove that, fearing a backlash from the 50 million or so Social Security and Medicare recipients, you condemn yourself to bad choices: (a) you can’t deal with deficits, which may crowd out productive investment and risk a financial crisis; (b) you must dramatically squeeze the rest of government, including the social safety net, defense and research; or (c) you must raise taxes sharply, which may further slow the economy.
Now, I am admittedly not an economist (thank doG) but by my rough count those two paragraphs contain maybe two semi-factual statements and about ten misstatements, mis-directs, and outright lies.
My first response after reading Samuelson’s gibberish was to rush over to Beat The Press and see if Dean Baker had already taken Samuelson to task. Alas, Dean has been otherwise occupied with taking Casey Mulligan of the NY Times Economix blog and the Washington Post to task for their various misstatements and mis-directs. I imagine he can only deal with just so much stoopid and disingenuousness in one day before reaching his fill.
So if I may quickly:
The Zombie-eyed-granny-starver’s budget and Medicare ‘Plan’ does take a meat ax to Medicare and threatens economic havoc on the elderly (via Kaiser Health News).
Samuelson proclaims that the Ryan budget “…spares older people from almost any change or sacrifice…” (this seems to be an article of perceived Conventional Wisdom among the Villagers and TradMed if this and this are indicators. But the devil as always is in the details as this from Think Progress explains. I would like to add that the attempt at generational war by proclaiming loudly that “55 and above are exempt from the changes” presupposes that those of us older than 55 have no desire to see these programs available to our younger family and friends. Please note, not everyone has an “I’ve got mine, fuck you!” attitude, m’kay?)
I am going to close this without attacking the rest of Samuelson’s gibberish and try to re-store my blood pressure to a more manageable level. But I would like to say that Samuelson continues to act as if the social safety net spending, Social Security, and Medicare have been stand alone problems these last ten years while ignoring the destruction of the US and world economies by the Banksters and fraudsters on Wall St.

good post.
I am continually amazed at how these politicians, pundits and even ‘journalists’ even the ones in the ‘liberal/progressive’ media can keep lying (either outright, by omission or by merely not challenging preposterous political talking points) all with a straight face.
How do they do it day in and day out and not just break down laughing or crying? All I can guess is that they must be on some very powerful meds.
nice Tom Waits tune!
‘Little Drop of Poision’ from Tom Waits would also go with this post pretty well.
Good post, Dakine.
I am so sorry for your loss. It puts a new spin on most everything, doesn’t it?
New eyes to see the dawn.
Yeah–just like the Banksters . . . we ‘have ours, so F*#k you.’ We hoard our stashes of cash (probably in off-shore accounts), pay accountants to help us avoid ANY taxation, and move into subsidized housing just so we won’t have to pay property taxes (after all, WE don’t have kids in school). We don’t pay gasoline taxes, because we never use the roads; we don’t pay sales taxes because we have entered the non-consumerism club. We, instead, spend our days, consuming FREE healthcare–we LOVE to sit in the doctors’ offices, and pay that trivial co-pay for our prescriptions and treatments. As for our kids and our grandkids–we merely offer advice: (in the words of Alan Grayson) don’t get sick, and if you do die quick!
Great post, Dakine.
However, I implore you to attack, with heightened viciousness, Samuelson’s point about being “unable to deal with the budget deficit” because of Social Security & Medicare. [And secondarily, that SS + M are "hurting other programs."]
I’d like for there to be a movement of folks showing up at Ryan events, Republican events, and even events of some limp Democrats, with pie charts showing the distribution of the Federal budget. That gigantic lump over there is DEFENSE SPENDING.
And while we’re at it, what ever happened to that old bogey man “interest on the national debt”? Remember how that used to be characterized as growing like Topsy and eating Cleveland? With interest rates less than zero, what happened to all the money that used to go to that category?
Finally, I am just so fucking SICK of the eternal linking of social security and the “deficit crisis.” I recognize that this is the result of years of propaganda from Peterson et al, and thus it’s impossible to turn around quickly, but if we had an EFFECTIVE President, he and every other Democrat would be out there debunking this crap and identifying it for what it is. Instead, he appoints the dreaded Catfood Commission and muses about the importance of “reforming entitlements” to deal with the “debt crisis.”
The arguments by the folks committed to saving social security [can't at the moment remember their names] ought to be featured front + center by all Dems.
I also hope that you’re responding to each of these “experts” [Samuelson et al.] where they live: WaPoo and NYT, by sending letters/posting comments.
I actually think the comment sections [when open & available] can provide opportunities for a lot of push-back. Perhaps that’s why they don’t allow comments all too frequently. See the cowardly Tom Friedman.
I dropped off the link to your post with Brad DeLong. We’ll see if he takes the hint. ;-)
thanks PW
Yeah, I should have it that bit a little harder and pointed out that a good portion of the “debt service” Samuelson talks about is that debt service owed to Social Security but I just needed to get the BP back under control…
No you don’t and I won’t.
A new behavior I learned in the past decade. Rec it for everyone.
Spending on the ever expanding security/military state gets a free pass. Worker benefits, gotta shut that down because it’s crowding out the free market and making us less competitive. Doesn’t take a genius to see through the BS, but whoever lies the most wins in our system apparently.
Hey, I’m 70 y.o. and Soc.Sec. is my sole income (paid for by payroll deduction my whole life) but I’d be happy to go back to work instead. I’d like to perform brain surgery on people. I know I’d do a good job too.
:})
I can give you a few candidates as well
