What’s on your mind tonight?
Thanks again, dakine. It’s reminiscences for me one more time! I learned Charlie Daniel’s long commie hippie poem Uneasy Rider, and I recited it to friends for years before he ever became famous among hippies. Of course he’s now known as a country star, but I remember Caballo Diablo.
And then there’s Black Oak Arkansas. Black Oak and Papa John Creach played separately at the first Marijuana festival I ever attended. It was a full two-act concert, and it was free, on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. Soon thereafter, Playboy magazine disqualified Gainesville from its annual competition for what’s-the-best-party-school: They kept winning it every year! They had to have their “number” retired, so that somebody else could win the honor.
Yeah, I met Charlie back in the day before he got religion. He was the first band to play at a funky little beer bar when I was in college. It was a $2 cover since he’d “played with Bob Dylan” This was in Bowling Green, KY. Long Haired Country Boy was kind of an anthem for us in those days. He’s changed the words to this in later years so I made sure it was an original words version first.
And I’ve also been known to break out the recitation of Uneasy Rider a few times over the years, especially at the late night parties.
Sounds like we’re brothers in arms! Yep that’s it: Late night parties. Although what one considers late at night can change with one’s schedule during life: I used to think of 3 and 3:30 as late at night, time to wrap it up.
Now I think of 3:30 am as early in the morning: Time to get up and start doing things. If I say “Time to wrap it up” at 3am now, it may mean something different.
