A Government War
By David Glenn Cox
“It is my job to put forward a vision of the country that benefits the vast majority of Americans. It is my job to make sure that my party is behind those initiatives, even if sometimes it’s breakin’ some china and goin’ against some of the dogmas of our party in the past.” – Barack Obama
“Wait a minute buddy, you been doing some jack assing you can’t shut up now. He’s got a paper says they need eight hundred pickers, you laugh and say they don’t, who’s the liar?” – The Grapes of Wrath
I wear the clothes which I have been given; they are not the clothes I chose myself. I did not choose this odyssey; I simply ride these rails and report what I see along the way. I seek neither pity nor quarter, I seek only understanding. I am a revolutionary journalist speaking of the things which those in power would rather not speak of.
Craigslist:
“Hello,
My name is John. I am 31 years old and live in XXXXXXXXXX. I have a wife and 3 small children that I am trying to provide for. I am not looking for exorbitant wages, I don’t want to get rich, I simply want to provide for my family as a man should. I am willing to work very hard and long hours for my wages.”
“Looking for one or two maybe three people. If you have a friend or two to bring it is even better. $10 cash an hour and you will be expected to show up around 6 am and hang out until 7 or 8 pm. You need to be smart, trustworthy and able to follow some simple directions. Also young (in your 20s) and somewhat clean cut (not a total bum) will help you get these spots.”
“THIS POSITION IS FOR SOMEONE INTERESTED IN GETTING TATTOOS/ WORKING IN EXCHANGE FOR TATTOO CREDIT.”
“I find it hard to keep up with some of my house cleaning. I live with my room mate and her son, so the cleaning would only be for areas/things specifically pertaining to me and my son. I would like someone to come once a week, for about an hour, to do various things. I will pay $15 to you in cash every week. I will specifiy each week what I need done, but here is what you can expect to be doing:
1-2 loads of laundry/folding
Deep cleaning bathroom
Make beds
Wash and reassemble couch cushion covers
Tidy bedrooms/throw away any thing needed”
“Krissy has her 11 and 14 year old respectful boys about 8 days month.
You would get them ready and tdke them to school when needed.
You would clean, cook, do laundry, drive her to the airport for work and pick up as needed.
And other odd things on occasion, about 80 hours totsl of on calk service a month. Most of the time you would be Part of the family just hsving fun :) Salmon creek tributary in back yard, very nice neighborhood. Krissy Is gone 20 days out of the month, the house is all yours.”
Compensation: Beautiful master bedroom, all utilities paid snd food
I don’t know who I feel sorrier for, the person taking such a job out of a need to put walls between themselves and the street or a person who would offer only peonage while referring to themselves in the third person.
This is America; this is a government which ignores its people’s suffering and pretends it isn’t there. It pretends that we aren’t here, but we are.
I am sometimes overcome by the desire to run but there is nowhere to go. I am trapped in a country lost in narcissism, Capitalism and self gratification. I have applied for so many jobs that I have literally lost count, hundreds, thousands, ten thousand?
The other day I saw a Greek woman crying on a balcony and threatening to jump. She would soon be unemployed due to the Greek austerity plan, her husband also planned to commit suicide. I could feel the tears welling up inside of me; I’ve been on that balcony too. What sort of system is this that does such things to its own people?
Free? Oh please, what a load of bunk. You are free, the largest economic downturn in seventy years with millions out of work and tens of thousands homeless but we are free. No, the bankers and corporate raisers are free the rest of us are just trapped. Lost like a ball in the tall grass and blamed for the crisis in the process.
We are a sick society which is cutting itself out of self esteem issues. The idea that the banks were handed fourteen trillion dollars and made whole while millions of honest hard working Americans were backhanded revolts me, we already know how Mitt Romney’s dog must have felt, we are treated no better.
I have gone from newcomer to old veteran in these clothes and I make no apologies. I have visions of tribunals, of millions blocking the highways of this country out of rage and righteous anger,
“Don’t take no nerve to do somepin, when you ain’t got no choice.” – The Grapes of Wrath
I wonder what’s to become of us, I wonder why more men and women haven’t leapt from the balconies. It isn’t the poverty which strips you bare; it isn’t the lack of money in your pocket which breaks you down. It is the lack of security, the inability to plan because your life is literally up in the air somewhere between heaven and hell. And what’s more, I could write about it until the cows come home but if you’re not there you can ever understand it.
There is more to this picture than meets the eye, how do I tell you about what it feels like to have someone dispute how much money they owe you because they know that your are hungry? People like Krissy who see themselves as nice people when they are actually lower than a slug in a wagon rut. They see themselves as just trying to help when they are actually trying to take advantage of someone else’s need.
That is the issue we face…need, and how do we deal with that need. Is need a profit opportunity or is need something else, a problem to be solved humanely?
I am changed by this experience and whether this change is temporary or permanent I cannot yet say. There is a core to us all, we are millions and when I say I, I mean we. We are millions, millions who have been told that it is our own fault. We have been priced out of a job market against workers earning $25 per week. American cars are built in Mexico, Korean cars in Alabama and the only product we really produce anymore is poverty.
This year’s hope and change becomes more of the same and change is not to be seen on the horizon. Shame is unheard of, as Rick Santorum claims that prenatal care leads to more abortions. This is no less than absolute madness, a war on the Post Office and on public employees. A government war punishing workers, punishing families and pushing people over the edge, stealing their futures to save a few nickels.
There was an episode of the Twilight Zone once where there was this little boy who was a monster. This little boy had strange mental powers and was able to inflict pain and injury upon those who didn’t smile and pretend to be happy. This little boy had turned the world to hell on Earth for the adults. During a birthday party the guest of honor had too much to drink and encouraged the other adults to bash the little boy’s head in with a chair while he kept him busy. That’s how I feel sometimes; I want someone to bash this monster over the head.
“Pacifism is objectively pro-fascist. This is elementary common sense. If you hamper the war effort of one side, you automatically help out that of the other. Nor is there any real way of remaining outside such a war as the present one. In practice, ‘he that is not with me is against me’.”- George Orwell

Dave –
Last I recall, you had just left the Twin Cities for a destination Not Yet Known.
Have you landed someplace? Are you at least in out of the elements?
I and others here so appreciate your writing and wish you well.
your in my area now… as a fan of Rod Serling’s ”Twiligh Zone”, boy we sure could use some of that inovative stuff nowaday’s…

The episode that really got to my heart was… the one with… ” Granny T”, and these two little siblings in a suburban home, with not enough love, jumped into a swimming pool, and came up in Granny T’s place, just like my granny too, old time good ole grannies… and tell you what… it makes me cry, but I don’t know why, cause, we had a good loving fambly here, not like that one that is the one in the episode… (twilight zone), oh by the way I tried to get that one, and it was not gettable, some couple a years ago. The actriss that played “Granny T”, couldn’t find her, she was supurb. That episode was outstanding, as was all of Rod’s work.
Rod Serling had an “epiphany” in the great war, ww2, He was on a “walk”, and the guy next to him, took a bullet, which Rod was impressed by that thing, I would be too, wouldn’t you?
Rod Serling, a real good guy, say’s me..
Nothing left to say but, thank you, David.
“According to Athens News, cutting 150,000 civil servants will be just the beginning, as the target is to cut the civil servants at ministries by one-third! A contingent of French occupiers are drafting a so-called evaluation process for civil servants which will not be in place until June, after which substantial firings can be expected. The only ministry that will not suffer cuts is the police.
The response of the population was quick, with both the public sector and private sector trade union federations, GSEE and ADEDY, respectively, calling for a mass demonstration for Syntagma Square at 4 pm on Feb. 22.”

You may want to look up from your brass-plated, peon-polished McMansion Krissy, and smell the thickening smoke.

Recommended as always, Dave. Should you find yourself in Oakland ever, I have a room you can stay in.
The biggest problem in public analysis is the economic illiteracy of mainstream media, congress, president and neo-liberal economists who confuse the budgets of USA (the currency issuer) with everybody else. Scare words like “unsustainable debt”, “living beyond our means”, “debt crisis” etc. are used and comparisons made to household budgets, a totally incorrect analogy. The dollar is basically a token that keeps the economy running.
Government creates money and the economy uses it. http://pshakkottai.wordpress.com/2011/11/23/how-the-economy-works-a-diagram/
a) Federal Deficits – Net Imports = Net Private Savings is strictly true. Govt “debt” is the sum of all deficits and appears on one side of the equation whereas the private sector “debt” means negative savings. Govt deficit is the source of money.
Income taxes play a minor role in macroeconomics. There is no urgency in fixing taxation. Immediate deficit funding is required.Taxation has a role in income equality and inflation control.Govt “debt” is the same as private wealth. These are in the form of the govt bonds held by citizens, pension funds and so on. If the national debt is paid off lots of citizens will be unhappy. The interest also flows into the private sector. FACT! Two key equations in economics which apply to any system of govt:
A numerical proof of (a) is shown in figure 4 of http://pragcap.com/resources/understanding-modern-monetary-system
b) Gross Domestic Product = Federal Spending + Private Investment + Private Consumption + Net exports.
The GDP is equal to approximately 5 times govt spending.. Actual data is in
http://pshakkottai.wordpress.com/2011/10/16/
Deficits are good, surplus is bad, govt debt means private sector wealth, national debt need not be paid back, USA does not need taxes to spend,The debt/GDP does not mean anything for a monetarily sovereign nation,China does not fund our economy, inflation is not a risk until full employment is reached, USA can afford to bailout the states and stop all austerity. Almost everything said in the mainstream media is wrong. The congress repeats talking point economics as does Fox News. The whole thing is a shame!
The macro economy includes the 1% who get most of the benefit. The way to avoid this is to offer much less bond financing (it being not required at all) and fund the states and counties fully. This can include making the federal reserve a part of the treasury (the way many countries do) and allow states to form their publicly owned state banks to compete with the too-big-to-fail banks. The interest payments from banking operations goes to the state and can fund education, infrastructure, healthcare (medicaid) etc. The only example of a public sector state bank is the bank of North Dakota which operates in surplus, funds agriculture, supports local banks, supports education and does all progressive things. You can also make the taxes more progressive by increasing taxes at the high end and lowering rates at the low end.
Before this happens, we should fix the two party system, fund elections for one month only, eliminate winner take all, have more parties and generally follow the French model. We should educate people to see “freedom” and “free enterprise” do not mean the same thing and make a commitment to support the commons
“but if you’re not there you can ever understand it.”
What else is there to say?
It’s a catch 22. If they get it already, no need to explain; they “get it”, … down to the depths of their soul. And if they don’t, … well no amount of words will ever suffice. It will always just be words to them.
How do you explain to someone about eating food from a garbage can because your insides are on fire? The hunger is gone, and become this overwhleming animal need. This madness. This rage. The depth of pain can not be described by words. You have to feel it. And honestly, I don’t want anyone to ever feel it. Because there’s no coming back from it. No fucking way do you ever forget. No matter what they fucking tell you, there’s no coming back. Once the hole has you, that’s game.
I’ve eaten from garbage cans. And I swear I can still remember how good that rotting half-eaten food tasted. I’m not ashamed by it. Not one bit. But try telling so-called “normal people” that. Look at their faces. That’s revulsion. And their eyes. See how they dart back and forth. Their brain is like a caged animal unwilling and undesiring to face that reality; … even though it’s not their reality. But they don’t want to hear those words. And they will forget soon. Oh they will forget very soon.
The one truth I have learned: it’s their world, and their rules (which they fucking change whenever they want). It’s their so-called “civilized” world. Their world. The rest of us just exist at their whim and pleasure. They live for their children and granchildren. We live for the next fucking day. Fuck anything past it. There is nothing past it!
And in their world, the “Krissy”‘s are the so-called “good guys”. And compared to the rest, maybe they are “good”. Who the fuck knows anymore. What do the words “good” or “bad” even mean anymore?
Never show weakness. Their kind are subconsciously programmed by 2/3 of their lives that weakness whould be killed, detroyed, manipulated. Never fucking show weakness. Show them anything but. Show them wierd and they leave you the fuck alone. Show them nothing and they will also leave you alone. Their programming doesn’t account for wierd or nothing. Too much wierd and they go for the jugular, ie. panic denfense. So go with nothing is my advice.
And what if someone said that Greek women should have jumped and the reason is because it would be the best thing for her because there ain’t no Santa Claus, no Easter Bunny, no Tooth Fairy, and no fucking magical genie in the sky who grants wishes! Well egad, watch them rail against this idea. Watch them scream and holler in protest about the sanctity of life. But if it’s so obvious, why are they so bothered by the statement? If we’re the “crazy” ones for suggesting it, then why are they so visibly upset? We’re “crazy” right?
Fuck, maybe “we” are crazy. Who the fuck knows anymore.
Good luck (and something they won’t understand) and may the night come for us soon.
I can only say shame on USA for having lost sight of the public purpose of a national government “to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity…”
^^ What Tambershall says.
Highly rec’d, Dave!
