Oh, heavens be praised! It’s a miracle right out of scripture! The gods of political rhetoric and book keeping have favored us to look upon its countenance. I’ve been reading the Bureau of Labor Statistics monthly jobs report, every month, for over two and a half years and I’ve never seen anything even remotely similar to this one.
From the BLS –
The unemployment rate declined by 0.3 percentage point to 7.8 percent in September. For the first 8 months of the year, the rate held within a narrow range of 8.1 and 8.3 percent. The number of unemployed persons, at 12.1 million, decreased by
456,000 in September.
Why that’s the most amazing thing since, well… ever! Just five weeks before a Presidential election, the economy suddenly takes off like a Shelby Cobra, as the number of unemployed drops by almost a half a million workers in just 30 days! No telling how many jobs were created to make the unemployment rate drop 0.3 percent, it must have been in the hundreds of thousands of new jobs!
From the BLS:
The unemployment rate decreased to 7.8 percent in September, and total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 114,000, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Employment increased in health care and in transportation and warehousing but changed little in most other major industries.
114,000??? But, but, but, the economic created 206,000 new jobs last month, at least, according to the revisions made in last months figures. It can only be explained as the hand of the deity, as the number employed miraculously explodes.
Number employed in July – 142,220,000
Number employed in August – 142,101,000
Number employed in Sept. – 142,974,000
Number unemployed in July – 12,794,000
Number unemployed in August – 12,544,000
Number unemployed in Sept. – 12,088,000
It must be the wondrous action of the deity, like that loaves and fishes thing, all over again. How else could 114,000 new jobs account for 456,000 less unemployed? Obama has employed the multitude, with his basket filled with a few new jobs and fishes.
Well, to start with, the biggest group of job gains went to that most vital sector of our labor force, that’s right, teenagers. Teenagers age (16 to 19) were the biggest job gainers at nine tenths of one percent. On the education front, the largest group of employment gains went to… those without a high school diploma. Their unemployment rate declined 0.7 of a percent; more than double the next largest educational category. From these figures it is clear, this will not only be a jobless recovery, but it will be an uneducated recovery, as well.
The U-6 Unemployment number for this month stands at 14.7 percent, almost exactly where it was in May. U-6, total unemployed, plus all persons marginally attached to the labor force, plus total employed part time for economic reasons, as a percent of the civilian labor force plus all persons marginally attached to the labor force
Below is the explanation for the U-6 number from the BLS:
NOTE: Persons marginally attached to the labor force are those who currently are neither working nor looking for work but indicate that they want and are available for a job and have looked for work sometime in the past 12 months. Discouraged workers, a subset of the marginally attached, have given a job-market related reason for not currently looking for work. Persons employed part time for economic reasons are those who want and are available for full-time work but have had to settle for a part-time schedule. Updated population controls are introduced annually with the release of January data.
Did you say, Part Time? Ding, ding, ding, employed part time for economic reasons –
July – 8,246,000
August – 8,031,000
Sept. – 8,613,000
The future is clear, the future is fun, the United States of America will lead the world into that bright clear dawn of a new day, arm in arm with uneducated teenagers working part time. Why who could argue that a recovery is under way on the strength of these numbers?
Part time due to slack work or business conditions –
July – 5,342,000
August – 5,217,000
Sept. – 5,523,000
Could only find Part time work –
July – 2,576,000
August – 2,507,000
Sept. – 2,572,000
From the employment situation report-
The number of persons unemployed for less than 5 weeks declined by 302,000 over the month to 2.5 million. The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) was little changed at 4.8 million and accounted for 40.1 percent of the unemployed.
So just where is all this job growth located in the economy? Let’s look at employed and unemployed persons by occupation, not seasonally adjusted, so take for example Management, professional and related occupations. In September 2011, unemployment stood at 4.4 percent, but has now declined to only 3.9 percent unemployment. I know, I hear you, boo hoo, there are no new jobs in management and finance, but that is exactly where you would look for payroll gains. No new management, no new projects on the horizon. With no new management jobs, I’ll bet them boys and girls live in blood terror fear of losing that job, cause, chances are there won’t be another one any time soon.
Transportation and material moving occupations – Unemployed
September 2011 – 10.9%
September 2012 – 9.3%
Employed
September 2011 – 8,239,000
September 2012 – 8,242,000
Looks pretty good doesn’t it? 3,000 new jobs in a single year, only the numbers of those seeking work in that field who can not find work exceeds 870,000. 871,000 people – 3,000 jobs, obviously, if this economy was going anywhere, it would need people to drive the trucks and the forklifts.
Then, Construction –
September unemployment 2011 13.4%
September unemployment 2012 13.2%
Employed
September 2011- 7,316,000
September 2012 – 7,015,000
Unemployed
September 2011 – 1,137,000
September 2012 – 1,071,000
People are leaving the field; there can’t be any kind of recovery if people are leaving the construction field. Temp jobs and part time work, no benefits, where you don’t get paid for the holiday, holiday.
So let us rest our heads on our surrealistic pillows, let us go quietly and methodically looking towards the dawn of that brave new world. The deity be praised, we are in the presence of true greatness, The BLS report spells out in perfect statistic and prolific prose, a lumbering, lagging economy, a sick man losing strength. You can’t sell your gold to that guy on TV forever, you know?
Yet, despite this documents utter starkness and frankness, the report is praised as good news by a trained seal media. The ultimate fascist power- control of the truth; put out some pretty roses and fertilize the shit out of them by burying the truth underneath it all. To bundle truth and lies altogether in one neat and tidy one size fits all package. The truth is what ever you want it to be, but reality hides behind it. I guess it is all where you are sitting, whether you see truth or reality.

My head hurts. My stomach hurts. My heart hurts.
Thanks for the number-crunching, Dave. I always check the Recent Diaries for a daveparts post. Good title, too. I am so old that I can remember being optimistic.
Thank you
There you go again, paying attention to the man behind the curtain. Keep up the great work.
The BLS report is its usual, brutal self. It holds nothing back, and is honest if you know how to read the numbers or, in my case, know someone like Dave who can read the numbers.
Yet, this is great news! Ask anybody! Even Paul Krugman says things are definitely getting better, so it must be so!
Truth vs reality. One would think they are synonymous. But they’re not, as Matthew or Luke or somebody got right once upon a time:
Pontius Pilate: So, what is truth?
Jesus of Nazareth: (silence)
Thank you for putting this up Dp…recommended…
Each of these job numbers likely describe or frame one human beings life and with this being so these numbers are limited and shallow as to giving a proper tellling of what each of these humans is seeing, finding out and having to endure. Clearly this particular BLS is one freighted with political Oracle of Delphi interpretations being it is just ahead a WH election calendar day.
The humans who are being counted here constitute the real storytell.
At this point it is not difficult to surmise this D Party run Obama WH has not been at the front leading the fight to bring better days to many Americans. Barack Obama appears to be more interested in what Wall Street wants and how to get it to them. Obama is no FDR. Plain to see.
Part-time,low pay,low prospects, low portals to healthcare access/pension options and long term employment timeline “jobs” creation becomes a way to pump the numbers but for each of the humans counted in the above numbers may mean little other than having been moved from one set of dire circumstances to another set of dire circumstances.
The Obama WH is not responsible or able or capable of doing much about how capitalism is working for 90% of Americans. What the Obama WH could have done was get out front and lead on bringing socialism and USG centered ways forward to help Americans to bridge from despair to hope.
The Obama WH could have fought for and put in place no matter the political/money politics attrition rate Medicare For All,moved retirement thresholds for SS downwards to age 60 or 55,could have told the banks to swallow the consequences of bad practices that led to 2008 and give all Americans new and clean Starting Line points. Americans needed a Jubilee on mortgages, credit, education debts and obligations. Americans needed a lowered retirement threshold and the means to help bridge from what 2008 presented and inflicted to better places and days. Americans needed a American POTUS who wanted to lead and was able to use the power of the WH and the Oval Office to do so. Obama failed at doing any of this. Obama deserves to be voted out. Bush and Clinton should be shunned for what they allowed to take place and happen. This is not about Rs vs. Ds. This is about Americans who need better politics, economics and a fair shake to a a fair deal. Not a fuckover.
Did not happen. Barack Obama failed to do what FDR showed a POTUS could do,can do and did do. Barack Obama should face political consequences and not be re-electd to be POTUS for four more years.
One human life for each human is the world as known and lived.Whether that life be an Americans or a Afghan innocent childs. For you or me? — our one life and our being alive is the world. All the world will ever be.
These BLS numbers tell a small part of the story so many Americans are living everyday here in this early 21st century. Humanbeings need to be more than just another cattle drive count or crop yield tabulation.
We need better solutions, wider compassion and some plain dignity being brought to the fore and given. WashingtonDC should be more about doing tolerable and competent governance of the USA — less about doing the deathdealing and treachery of American Empire. Plenty needs to be done right here in the USA. Barack Obama seems to not be getting this. Time to tell Barack Obama time is up and Obama is not getting voted back in.
If a so called D Party POTUS cannot emulate FDR what good is this D POTUS? Not much. Thank you Dp. Stay with it. These numbers are about human beings — each of which is and becomes a full story as number one.
I agree with everything you say except this, “Barack Obama failed to do what FDR showed a POTUS could do,” To fail, Obama would have to first try.
He is their boy, he is the high priest of crony Capitalism.
These numbers are about the people and about us all, this is our fourth year of depression, children who were 10 are now 14. They have no recollection of prosperity or of peace
I think you are misreading what has happened and what should have happened. Obama, like Hillary Clinton and John McCain, supported the Bailout of the “Too Big To Fail” Crowd. He appointed Geithner to the top position at Treasury, Geithner should have been tried under the RICO act for all the various maneuvers he employed immediately before that appointment. Geithner had seen to it that AIG and Goldman Sachs received the lion’s share of the BailOut Monies. Then on top of that injury to common sense, Obama let Bernanke pass out some 15 trillions of dollars to the Top bankers, and many of them are people at banks not inside our nation’s borders.
At least seven of those trillions will never be returned to the Federal Reserve, so your grand kids and everyone else’s will be paying on that. Both Darrell Issa (R) and Dennis Kucinich had begged for someone in authority to see to it that the Federal Reserve release the monies, not to Bernanke and Geithner’s friends, but to state chartered regional banks that would have been required to then loan the monies out to businesses in their area. But Obama is too much a puppet of the Financial Elite to do anything that makes sense. He rather like s helping the Bernanke/Geithner duo steal these monies.
But we are told not to worry. Although the Democratic slogans state that Obama will not be upping the taxes on the middle class, I am sure that is exactly how these trillions will be re-paid. And he stated at the debate last week that he approves of Simpson Bowles. Once Simpson Bowles is a done deal, he will indeed be decimating the Social Security funds. He already decimated the MediCare funding when he saw to tit hat the ACA legislation took over 799 billion from MediCare.
Thank you Dp.
Will you be signing up to “volunteer” for Barack as the Obama For America WH campaign ad is urging these days non-stop here at FDL?
Isn’t it way too late for Obama to “Get Started” as Barack Obama as a D POTUS has had since Jan.20,2009 to “get started” and has failed to do so time after time?
What an annoying Obama WH campaign election buzz box to have to keep scrolling pass. Seeing this pro Obama buzz box around the Support Bradley Manning box here at FDL really is a large chunk of hypocrisy being Barack Obama — the warcriminal/warmonger D POTUS — is the POTUS sticking it to Bradley Manning for having the audacity to show and tell some truth.
Volunteer for Obama? Really? It is insulting to keep seeing this ad.
So which is it? FDL supports Bradley Manning or FDL supports the POTUS who is trying to bury Bradley Manning alive? The hypocrisy smells bad.
Misread? Not following you on use of that word….
It was for me plain to see within the first six months after having become POTUS that Barack Obama was going to let G.W.Bush walk as a free warcriminal and Barack Obama had deep intentions of sabotaging Medicare For All. What Barack Obama has not done about Wall St and what the mortgage pirates have inflicted on so many Americans as POTUS because of the moral and political rot of this D Party POTUS and this D Party run WH. The policy and agenda choices and lineups telling the story of doing sellouts and money politics time after time have told the story.
Barack Obama belongs in a jailhouse. Not the WH. I have misread very little about Barack Obama. Will not be “volunteering” for Barack Obama. Done with that BS after having been hustled once already during 2008 by Barack Obama. Barack Obama has betrayed too many too often. Voting Obama out of the WH is now the most sane act any thinking American can or could do. Not seeing much of a outbreak of sanity tho.Lots of hypocrisy. Not much sanity.
It could have been different. Way too late now.
