We Don’t Love Freedom Enough
By David Glenn Cox

It is as if someone has died, that realization which comes to you from out of the blue and says, “Oh wow, they really did that!” Armed men in military style fatigues took over an American city and ordered its residents off the streets. Roaming, this force in their armored personnel carriers, interrogated citizens who dared break from their “voluntary” request. They ejected people from their homes and searched them without warrant. It reminded me of a scene from the movie Fahrenheit 451 where they were chasing Montag with the helicopters, while his picture is splashed across the television as “breaking news.”

Authorities pick out official suspects, disallowing any other photographs but those deemed “official.” The authorities ask for the public’s help in identifying the suspects, and then the boy’s mother comes forward saying the FBI has been talking to her son for two years and has been to their home…

Praising Money Tonight in the House of the Lord
By David Glenn Cox

It was a red carpet and searchlight extravaganza playing to a full house. Millionaires, multi-millionaires and even mega-multi-millionaires filled every seat. Then the star of show burst through the doors and worked the crowd no differently than a diamond studded televangelist. Smiles and glad hands for all, we’re praising money tonight in the house of the lord.

Stalinist applause filled the room, two minutes, then four minutes, then finally, the extra had his walk-on moment, banging the over-sized novelty gavel and the crowd grew quiet. John Boehner announced the President to the room and the pandemonium returned. Screams and shouts of joy completely unfettered and unencumbered, it was as if the Beatles had reunited and were suddenly appearing unannounced.

With that many rich folks all together in one room and all so orgasmic-ally delighted by the appearance of the President one must ask as a poor man, what’s this mean to me? I mean, we’re talking rich and poor here. Not just my poverty but that of all of us, if you took the combined net income of the Capital house band and Obama and his Posse, seated in the Capitol building for the State of the Union speech, it would probably exceed the net income of a mid-sized country.

Hell, if they wanted to they could start their own army and take over the country. They could, if they wanted to and were clumsy about it. Consider this; the Party room says the unemployment rate stands at 7.9% (U-3) while the more exact number is 15.4% (U-6). To the studio audience that 7.9% is gospel, it is the Lord’s truth, when even the 15.4% number is horse apples. A completely dual reality, the wealthiest one percent of the one percent are having a party at their club house tonight and they’re happy as f*ck about it.

The President – “Tonight, thanks to the grit and determination of the American people, there is much progress to report. After a decade of grinding war, our brave men and women in uniform are coming home. (Applause.) After years of grueling recession, our businesses have created over six million new jobs. We buy more American cars than we have in five years, and less foreign oil than we have in 20. (Applause.) Our housing market is healing, our stock market is rebounding, and consumers, patients, and homeowners enjoy stronger protections than ever before.” (Applause.)

A grit and determination which could also be described as American’s suffering unnecessarily. After a decade of unnecessary war, some of our troops are coming home and some more will come home next year. These troops aren’t being demobilized, but will return home to prepare for the next conflict. After years of grueling recession we have only years of grueling recession to show for it. Corporations and oil companies are more profitable than ever. The Wall Street S&P is back over 14,000 again and that’s why this crowd in the honeycomb hide out are all so f*cking happy tonight.

Outside the Capitol where over 300 million Americans are playing along at home, over 24 million of those Americans are out of work. The unemployment numbers haven’t really changed much at all this year and little from the year before, just the categories these Americans are counted in change.

The Big Book of Freedom

The Big Book of Freedom
By David Glenn Cox

We live in strange times, but then, you don’t need me to remind you of that. We are dissipated and scattered, sermonized and patronized and intellectually euthanized. These are revolutionary times though some don’t believe it; some won’t accept it and some will only whisper about it in the dark.

We are no longer what we once were; we have become something which our past would despise. I remember in that halcyon little Chicago suburb of my youth buying cigarettes in a local liquor store during the Vietnam War. On the back of the cash register facing the customers a sign read, “Draft beer, not students.” A private store owner expressing his personal displeasure at American foreign policy, a small statement certainly, but it was open and public.

At the same time when the local church a minister gave a sermon in support for the Vietnam War the congregation answered him with angry shouts of “then send your son!” Some got angry and walked out, never to return. These were the symptoms of a society in conflict, but a society functioning in conflict.

In those long ago days our soldiers were referred to as our brave boys serving their country, today they are called only heroes. The irony has not escaped me that some of my friends served in Vietnam and now my son’s friends who serve in Iraq / Afghanistan and they return home damaged and broken just as mine did. This is generational carnage of puppets pawns and policy, of fighting commies or Islamic revolutionaries for nondescript illusionary national goals.

The dead, the wounded, the carnage and the cash matter, but even more so let us look at what has become of us as a people. In the recent Republican debate Ron Paul was booed into silence as he attempted to tell the faithful why we must end these wars of aggression. What Democratic candidates would have such courage? Yet Paul doesn’t believe in the Department of Education either. He believes in the insane notion that if you just leave corporations alone we could achieve a national nirvana. Noam Chomsky agrees with Paul in this foreign policy point just as Barack Obama now channels George W. Bush in his war talk of terrorists.

Last month the defense department tested a “Hypersonic Technology Vehicle” this is a high speed glider which sits atop an intercontinental ballistic missile. The program was originally the brain child of the Rumsfeld Pentagon; ostensibly the idea was to load the glider with a conventional warhead which would be able to strike any point on planet Earth in 60 minutes. Even during the Bush administration this project was controversial within the Pentagon because adversaries or potential adversaries would have no way of knowing for sure the destination or the payload of such a weapon.

This weapons system’s purpose is clearly offensive and not defensive; it is by definition a first strike nuclear weapons delivery system. America’s nuclear policy for over forty years was never to be the first to use nuclear weapons. That national policy of nuclear deterrent was changed under the Bush administration and continues now unabated under the Obama administration. It is no longer the policy of this nation not to use nuclear weapons first.

What would we think of China or Russia building such a weapons system? But this is from that other America, the one that doesn’t look in the mirror much any more, an addict who hides its addiction to violence in flags and homilies. I asked a Catholic Priest once about why he didn’t speak out against the war and he answered, “We are forbidden to speak about it by the Bishop.” Curiosity and anger compelled me to ask, “Would Jesus have listened to the Bishop?” Later the following year I attended my wife’s church on Easter Sunday. On the altar directly behind the minister was an American flag on a staff. I was morally offended by that, as god plays no favorites. Then as the minster began his sermon he spoke of our heroes defending our freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan. This was his message on Easter Sunday and I realized then that good atheists are not born– they are made.

A co-opting of church and state and even of language but more devastating is the co-opting of thought. When I first saw this news story I thought that perhaps it was a joke. Then when I realized that it was not a joke I thought of the Crosby Stills and Nash tune “Teach your Children.”

Stars & Stripes – “The publisher of a new children’s coloring book, called “We Shall Never Forget 9/11: The Kids’ Book of Freedom,” says it is the latter. Really Big Coloring Books Inc. publisher Wayne Bell says the book is intended to be educational.

“It’s really designed for older kids, not preschoolers,” said Bell in a phone interview. “It’s designed to be a teaching and learning tool for parents and teachers to use with their children.”

From the text of “The Kid’s Book of Freedom”

“Being the elusive character that he was, after hiding out with his terrorist buddies in Pakistan and Afghanistan, American soldiers finally located the terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden. Many people had helped secure his safety for nearly 10 years.

Dubbed code name Neptune Spear, the operation lasted 38 minutes, included 23 SEALs and a dog named “Cairo,” no one wanted detainees. Once the American military confirmed and identified Bin Laden, President Barack Obama had previously issued a kill order to SEAL team 6 to shoot Bin Laden. In Bid Laden’s house in Pakistan Osama used his wives and children as shields as he tried to escape from the American military. But the coward Bin Laden could not escape. He was killed hiding behind the dress tail of a young woman. On May 11, 2011, Bin Laden was shot dead and the American military wrapped him in a white blanket and buried him at sea by throwing his body overboard. Throwing his body into the sea showed him more respect than he showed to the people who died on 9/11.

Children, the truth is, these terrorist acts were done by freedom-hating radical Islamic Muslim extremists. These crazy people hate the American way of life because we are FREE and our society is FREE. We must be prepared to know and understand the truth, America is FREE. Ask you mother and your father, your teacher, your preacher what this really means. What does it mean to be FREE? Why are we a FREE people?

We are free to think, free to be honest, free to write, free to live as we wish. We are America. America does not hate other people in the world, but we love the world in which we live and will defend our way of life.”

“America…just a nation of two hundred million used car salesmen with all the money we need to buy guns and no qualms about killing anybody else in the world who tries to make us uncomfortable” – Hunter S. Thompson

These are the things that our children are being taught today, that it is men with guns who give us our freedoms. No mention of law, justice or court systems in “The Kid’s Big Book of Freedom” and the President had ordered Bin Laden killed.

What is going on here, who are we really? We cannot claim to be the good guys when we act no differently than the bad guys. These behaviors are corroding and dissolving the ideals our nation was founded upon and these things flow like a river into the future. How far down stream is it from “President Barack Obama had previously issued a kill order” to police shot the man dead because he was a criminal?

The policies, parties and principles become muddled and erode our path and make slippery the slope. Democrats favor tax cuts and free trade and Republicans favor tax cuts and free trade. Democrats wish to continue the wars and cut social spending and Republicans wish to continue the wars and cut social spending.

We are a hostile nation at war, at war with public employees, at war with public education, at war with the poor and at war with the sick and elderly. This is the battle ground and these are the hostilities which none, none of the candidates will address. Wages are falling in almost every employment category, with schoolteachers and staff among the fastest growing unemployment categories. The President proposed money in his jobs bill to wire more schools to the Internet but offered no money for the computers. Who will benefit from such a program other than Comcast and Time Warner? He has offered more money to build science labs in schools but no money for the teachers or supplies.

The President’s plan is not much different than the “The Kid’s Book of Freedom,” solutions based on imaginary issues and laced with phony propaganda. Trying to save the system by destroying the system, cutting employer tax rates while cutting social spending still claiming that it will help protect the system in the end–and this is from the left! On the right we have calls to end Social Security and Medicare entirely, calls to end the minimum wage and even to roll back child labor laws.

All because they don’t dare to tell you the truth, and the truth is, that you can’t compete with workers who earn five dollars a day. They can’t tell you that, and they can’t tell you that any job which can be taken away will be taken away. The three Free Trade pacts before Congress right now all enjoy bipartisan support and will ensconce forever the prerogatives of corporate power and low taxation. The President and his rivals talk much about creating jobs when what the people need is income.

“Unhappy events abroad have retaught us two simple truths about the liberty of a democratic people.

The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is Fascism—ownership of Government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power.

The second truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if its business system does not provide employment and produce and distribute goods in such a way as to sustain an acceptable standard of living.

Both lessons hit home.

Among us today a concentration of private power without equal in history is growing.

This concentration is seriously impairing the economic effectiveness of private enterprise as a way of providing employment for labor and capital and as a way of assuring a more equitable distribution of income and earnings among the people of the nation as a whole.”– Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Twilight’s Last Gleaming
By David Glenn Cox

So we have come to this dark time and dark place once again. It is both unwholesome and unhealthy to come here, a prurient examination of moldering bones. It is the search for truth without motive and in search of criminals without a thoughtful examination of the crime. A search for principles where there are none and a search for release from a nation’s guilty conscience exposed in a firefighter’s cough and a widow’s tear. There is no justice to be found in reexamining debris and there is no relief to be had in monuments of stone.

The crime is beyond rival, it opened an entire new field of warfare upon the earth. Or as the Roman maxim advises, “Who gains from this?” Did Islamic revolutionaries gain anything from the 9-11 attack? Did this attack in anyway advance their goals? Did the destruction of two Islamic nations and the deaths of mass multitudes of fellow Muslim men, women and children achieve the terrorist’s goals?

Or were these the goals of a Neoliberal regime which was stuck on stupid further advanced? The dissolution of freedoms which had survived a civil war, European Fascism and the cold war. Ideals which lie buried now with the bones and beams melted not by kerosene flames but by the darker burning desires of the corrupted heart.

Who gains from this? Did Spanish saboteurs gain anything by destroying the battleship Maine? Or were US foreign policy goals achieved by commencing an unnecessary war with an aging power with the goal of stealing her Pacific empire?

Did North Vietnamese patrol boats fire at US destroyers as claimed or were US foreign policy objectives met by expanding an unpopular war? What would the North Vietnamese have gained by attacking US ships even if inside Vietnamese territorial waters?

Did Saddam Hussein have weapons of mass destruction or did government simply tell the public that he did to frighten them? To use fear as an instrument of foreign policy and an instrument of domestic policy as well, but before this engine of crime and iniquity could commence it needed a fuel, and more importantly, it needed a spark.

“Naturally the common people don’t want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” – Hermann Goering

Let us then leave off the examination of rivets or nuts and bolts and look instead to the truest connectors and fasteners of the crime because if I say X it can be argued and discounted by Y and so these things, these rivulets of blood at the crime scene tell us of the gore but ignore the truest motivations of the criminals.

Why was the Pentagon attacked? What goal was achieved or hoped to be achieved by attacking the US military headquarters? Was it hoped by the terrorists that they would kill or maim the military leadership? Did they expect that such a strike would cause paralysis throughout the military? Or could it be that without an attack on the Pentagon the US government could not respond will a full military response. Without the attack on the Pentagon this is a civilian crime, committed by civilians against others civilians.

Welcome to the bright lights of a new media dark age of shock and awe. The information age, the misinformation days the disinformation daze. Go ahead; say anything, the transcript can always be altered later. So now a decade has past and the media ghouls and jackals have returned to the scene to dig up the dead for the purpose of spreading new fear and misdirecting blame yet again. To point fingers at the media created enemies in their corrupt bloodlust while they ignore the villains of a government at war with its own people.

Who gains from this? When the stock market crashed in 2007 the banks were reimbursed with $1.7 trillion in free money, money loaned by the Federal Reserve at such low interest rates as to be virtually free. Paid for by the US treasury which in turn means that it will be paid for by the tax payer. How then can the banks repay these “free’ loans with their mountains of bad debts and red ink? They will do so by fleecing those same tax payers who so graciously bailed them out. You bailed them out and you get to pay for the privilege…twice.

For their trouble almost eleven million American homes have been foreclosed upon, that is forty five million Americans. American’s who have lost their jobs and homes and futures on the myth of free trade, the duplicity of their government and the avarice of Capitalism. The banks are reimbursed and the bonus checks are printed with lots of zeros and you got the bust, the boot and the bill.

The media marauders report record corporate profits in a “jobless recovery” which is neither jobless nor recovering. The new jobs are in Asia and corporate America has invested over a billion dollars in South Korea alone. Because by using third world labor the corporations are able to reap huge profits even on reduced sales thanks to low wages and reduced taxes.

The towers fell, even those towers not struck by aircraft; the first aircraft struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46 but why? Why 8:46? If the intent was to cause maximum damage and maximum causalities then why not attack at 9:46 or 10:46 why would the first tower be struck before most workers had made it to their desks? It is almost as if the terrorist’s were trying to mitigate the number of causalities rather than trying to maximize them. That doesn’t make any sense and is not a question of X or Y but a question of intent. Why would hard hearted, cold blooded killers would be so considerate of their most hated enemy?

Why would suicidal killers so full of rage and loathing for the United States bother with the World Trade Center at all? Why did American Airlines flight 11 fly right past the Indian Point nuclear power plant on its way to the World Trade Center? If an airliner could take down so huge a sky scraper as the World Trade Center what would the effect be on a nuclear containment vessel. Why destroy two or three buildings when you could destroy all of New York? If of course your purpose was to affect a stunning act of terrorism that would be the most logical course, yet if your goal was only to sow fear that would be far too extreme an act.

These are the bloody finger prints, not in acts which the terrorist perpetrated or were prevented from achieving but what they could have done had they been really trying to achieve maximum damage. This defies logic, why would terrorist design a well thought out plan which was only a half hearted strike and which mitigated casualties?

Who gains from this? Who used the 9-11 attack to their fullest advantage? The terrorists? Tell me, what did the terrorist gain from this? What did the US government gain from this? In that quotient is the answer, it is the mystery inside the riddle wrapped in the enigma.

Since that September morning our country has never been the same. Our freedoms were buried in the smoldering wreckage of those buildings. We all died a little that day, this new Pearl Harbor sunk not our battleships but our way of life and the true attack came not from without but from within. The true damage was done not with aircraft but with articles, not with missiles but with media and not with terrorists but with lobbyists.

“Power is not a means, it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. “– George Orwell

And so the media necrophiliac’s rejoice and satisfy themselves upon the corpses once again and quench their thirsts upon the new tears reclamated and promulgated for the camera lens. A crime with 300 millions victims looking for answers from a government which is determined to ignore the questions. For ten years the government has funded and fought wars of aggression …why? For ten years the words liberty and patriotism have been welded into the lighting rod of unquestioning silence. New police and security organs have been established for the express purpose of watching and controlling you!

“Fascism, the more it considers and observes the future and the development of humanity, quite apart from political considerations of the moment, believes neither in the possibility nor the utility of perpetual peace.” Benito Mussolini

“If we have reason to believe someone is preparing an attack against the U.S., has developed that capability, harbors those aspirations, then I think the U.S. is justified in dealing with that, if necessary, by military force. – Dick Cheney

Cry Havoc

Cry Havoc
by David Glenn Cox

Sometimes it’s the nagging details that won’t leave you alone. No matter how you try and reconcile them to the facts, they somehow just don’t fit. I really don’t like to write about 9-11 because of the emotional trauma attached. People either believe the official theories or they don’t believe. Some take offense at even questioning official theories–that somehow to question official theory is to disparage the memories of the victims. I find that interesting because that is the exact reason Jack Ruby gave for killing Lee Harvey Oswald was to spare Mrs. Kennedy the emotional trauma of a trial.

Yet there have been subsequent investigations of calamities.  The wreckage of the battleship Maine was inspected by divers and it was discovered to be far more likely that the ship exploded due to a fire in a coal bunker than Spanish saboteurs. The United States gained valuable overseas colonies from that event. The Hearst newspapers fanned the flames of war and the Captain of the Maine, who was negotiating with the Spanish at the time, was completely ignored. These things took on a life of their own so when Rahm Emanuel said, “You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that is an opportunity to do things you could not do before.”

The Republican’s battered Emanuel for making such a statement but what Emanuel was explaining is exactly how government actually operates. Nicola’ Machiavelli published “The Prince” in 1515, and it supports exactly the feelings that Mr. Emanuel expressed. Even more so, it explains in detail that when you understand how the mechanisms of a government work it is possible to pull the levers and manipulate these crisis to the advantage of the prince.

If you play chess you understand that the goal is to control the center of the board. You do this by a mixing the power of the different chess pieces. Some pieces are obvious and right out in front. Pawns are weak and obvious while others, such as the queen or bishop, are powerful and can strike from a distance. Your goal is to deceive your opponent into misunderstanding the power of your pieces. To bait your opponent into a trap from which they think they stand to gain but actually will lose all.

So when the US ambassador to Iraq, April Glaspie, tells Saddam Hussein that in the opinion of the United States how he settles his problems with his neighbors was none of our concern, the US was giving Saddam an open invitation to invade Kuwait. Didn’t the US back Saddam in his prior war against Iran? Looking at the situation from the Iraqi standpoint it appears the US is giving tacit approval. Then, immediately after the invasion, George Bush the elder appears on national television filled with righteous indignation and declares to the world “This will not stand.”

Look at the situation with a chess player’s eye.  How did the US benefit from these events? First, Arabs states not under the US protective umbrella saw their vulnerability displayed. Second, Arab states under that umbrella saw how the US could manipulate world opinion to champion their cause. Third, the US military was able to establish a permanent military presence in the Persian Gulf region. Doctored photos were shown to the Saudi’s of massed formations of Iraqi troops along their frontiers.

So did April Glaspie misspeak? Did she and James Baker misunderstand? Or did they understand the situation all too well and use a crisis to their advantage? When the dust and smoke cleared, US military power was firmly ensconced across the Persian Gulf. The military power of Saddam Hussein was broken and Arab nations had to choose the protection of the US umbrella or risk the storm. No more oil embargoes, from now on the faucet is turned on for the advantage of all and the American empire rules supreme.

Looking at a map of the Persian Gulf the US military has surrounded the region and only the forces in Iran hold out. Saudi Arabia and Iran tussle for regional supremacy. In Saudi Arabia women are not allowed out on the street alone and they have no right to vote. The Royal house of Saud rules with carrot and stick and the stick is an iron fist. The national treasury is the King’s checkbook, and a council of ministers can make recommendations to the King, but his majesty is under no obligation to pay any attention to what they might suggest. This is similar to how the new consumer protection office set up in the basement of the Federal Reserve will operate in this country.

Iran is an Islamic Republic with a President and a Prime Minister. They are elected to four year terms and they appoint the cabinet. The council of experts appoints the Supreme (religious) leader. This is a theocratic Republic and since it is based on Islamic law, the Supreme leader is appointed for life just as our own Supreme Court justices are appointed for life. In Saudi Arabia, which also functions under the same Islamic law as Iran, the King holds all of these offices. Which country then most closely resembles the American system of government?

The nail which sticks up shall be hammered down. Iran, which hasn’t attacked another nation in hundreds of years, is demonized in the Western press. While the US is trying to sell India nuclear fuel, Iran is accused before the fact and without proof of desires to build nuclear weapons for the purpose of destroying their adversary Saudi Arabia? No, to destroy Israel.  Why would Iran want to spend billions of dollars just to destroy Israel? Just pure meanness? Dastardly, dark, sinister intentions of national suicide? A plan with a guaranteed net result of the certain destruction of the nation and its population?

So why would Iran want to build a nuclear bomb? Well, all of her neighbors except for Afghanistan and Iraq already have nuclear weapons, and those two aforementioned nations have American combat troops stationed on Iran’s borders and drone reconnaissance flights flying over their territory, while bellicose politicians threaten and attempt to bully her. So from an Iranian point of view, the most profound reason that they might want to build a nuclear bomb is to protect themselves from an American invasion. For the United States it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.  The more they bully Iran the more likely they are to possibly be correct. This as the US pressures Russia not to sell Iran anti-aircraft missiles. Can anti-aircraft missiles in any way be considered offensive weapons?

Members of the German Nazi Party burned the Reichstag building for the purpose of advancing draconian laws to destroy the nation’s civil rights. This same German army created phony border incursions to justify their invasion of Poland. There were no North Vietnamese patrol boats firing torpedoes at US navy ships in the Gulf of Tonkin. US forces encouraged the overthrow and murder of General Diem in Vietnam. US forces aided the overthrow of the lawfully elected government of Iran in 1956. US forces helped to place Augusto Pinochet in power in Chile and tried unsuccessfully to depose Hugo Chavez in Venezuela. These are not conspiracy theories–these are facts. This is how your government uses its power.

This is how Machiavelli described nations using power five hundred years ago. We know that US covert forces tried unsuccessfully on multiple occasions to murder Fidel Castro. Would such forces–if they were to believe or were manipulated to believe that an American leader was soft on Communism during the Cold War–not act? “It is not that I loved Caesar less but that I loved Rome more,” would they not act in the national interest to save Rome?

On September 11, 2001 an aircraft struck the US Pentagon, the command center of the United States military power. The question I ask is a simple one, why? Why the Pentagon? What was gained by the terrorists through this act? Did they believe that such a strike would paralyze the US military? An attempt perhaps to decapitate the leadership?

I don’t want to talk about light poles or marks on the lawn but only about the strategic reasoning for this event. Pretend that you are the terrorist mastermind here and you have four aircraft. Two designated for the World Trade Center because… terrorists hate world trade? Or perhaps it was a symbol of US power and prestige and you really, really hate America. Had those two aircraft crashed into the Indian Point nuclear power station they could have created a Fukushima type nuclear event that could have caused the forced depopulation of New York City. Maybe the terrorists weren’t that smart or maybe that was too much carnage even for blood thirsty terrorists willing to give up their own lives.

One aircraft goes down in Pennsylvania and another goes out of its way to strike one side of the Pentagon. Why did it make a difficult maneuver when one side of a five sided building is about the same as any other? Did the terrorist have intimate knowledge of the office arrangements inside the Pentagon? If so, they were all wrong.

In your role of terrorist mastermind, you have one aircraft available to strike one target in Washington D.C. which target would you choose? The Capital building? The White House? Have you ever seen Washington D.C. from the air? I circled Washington D.C. one night for about an hour and at one end of this big grass mall is the Capital building and at the other end is the White House both damn hard to miss. Some have said those were the targets for the aircraft that went down in Pennsylvania but that returns us to the original question, why hit the Pentagon?

Are Americans emotionally attached to the Pentagon as they are to the Capital building or the White House? George Washington laid the cornerstone for the White House; the Pentagon was constructed of poured concrete during World War 2. It is almost inconceivable to understand what these terrorists had hoped to gain by targeting the Pentagon.

Now let’s look at the situation again like Machiavelli, let’s use a chess player’s eyes. What if the there had been no strike upon the Pentagon? A group of terrorists from various nations high jacked civilian aircraft and attacked the World Trade Center, civilians attacking a civilian target. Could the US military then mobilize to invade Iraq and Afghanistan? The attack on the Pentagon was an attack on US military installation that fully justified a full retaliatory military response.

Of the three successful terrorist flights, it was the most difficult to achieve. This aircraft avoided other higher value targets for what was no more than a figurehead attack. Yet if we look at it through the eyes of Machiavelli we can see that it was the most crucial and the most difficult. This is not a conspiracy theory, this is conjecture. We cannot look in to the hearts and minds of our leaders. We cannot see into the future so we must rely on our ability to see into the past.

With history as our guide we become schooled in what human nature can and will do. They will commit terrible acts to advance an agenda. They will burn down their own Capital or lie about military events. They will kill foreign heads of state to gain power, they will remorselessly kill the defenseless and they will even kill their own leaders.  It is, after all, only a matter of degrees.

“O, pardon me, thou bleeding piece of earth,
That I am meek and gentle with these butchers!
Thou art the ruins of the noblest man
That ever lived in the tide of times.
Woe to the hand that shed this costly blood!
Over thy wounds now do I prophesy,–
Which, like dumb mouths, do ope their ruby lips,
To beg the voice and utterance of my tongue—
A curse shall light upon the limbs of men;
Domestic fury and fierce civil strife
Shall cumber all the parts of Italy;
Blood and destruction shall be so in use
And dreadful objects so familiar
That mothers shall but smile when they behold
Their infants quarter’d with the hands of war;
All pity choked with custom of fell deeds:
And Caesar’s spirit, raging for revenge,
With Ate by his side come hot from hell,
Shall in these confines with a monarch’s voice
Cry ‘Havoc,’ and let slip the dogs of war;
That this foul deed shall smell above the earth
With carrion men, groaning for burial”

William Shakespeare – Julius Caesar Act 3, Scene 1
