On July 30th the Progressive Caucus of the California Democratic Party passed a resolution proposing that a primary challenge be offered to Obama next year. The Progressive Caucus’s certification expired at the same time, and while other caucuses were routinely recertified that day by the state party, the Progressive Caucus (I’m told by its chair, Karen Bernal) would not have been, had a vote been held. So the recertification was tabled, and the Progressive Caucus is in limbo. It no longer exists, but it may yet continue existing.
I asked Karen Bernal about the resolution and the response to it on Sunday. Here’s that audio: mp3.
Here’s the resolution:
RESOLUTION in SUPPORT of a POSSIBLE 2012 DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY CHALLENGE
Passed July 30, 2011
Anaheim, CA
WHEREAS, the Progressive Caucus of the California Democratic Party recognizes the challenge presented by President Obama’s negotiating away Democratic Party principles to extremist Republicans, we are challenged by President Obama in the following ways:
• His unilateral closed-door budget offer to slash Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, which endangers the New Deal and War on Poverty safety nets.
• His determination to escalate U.S. militarism through illegal secret CIA drone attacks and unauthorized wars.
• His willingness to extend the Bush tax cuts for millionaires and bail out big banks without ending the foreclosure crisis that displaces American working families.
• His insistence on pushing a health insurance bill which enriches private insurance companies while ignoring growing support for single-payer health care or robust public options.
• His continuance of President Bush’s assault on civil liberties with an extension of the repressive Patriot Act.
• His failure to restore due process, including the protection of whistleblowers and habeas corpus.
• His numerous failures to adhere to international law.
• The continuing practice of nationwide FBI raids of anti-war progressive protestors.
• His decision to increase the arrests and deportations of undocumented workers.
• His facilitation of the privatizing of the public sphere, which includes education and housing, among others.
• His disregard of his promises to the Labor movement.
• His failure to adequately protect the environment and adequately address climate change.
WHEREAS, the Progressive Caucus of the California Democratic Party recognizes the historical significance of the Eugene McCarthy/Robert F. Kennedy anti-war challenge to President Lyndon Johnson. The challenge followed President Johnson’s decision to escalate U.S. military involvement in Vietnam, betraying his campaign promise to end a war that polarized America. Similarly, we recognize the danger and betrayal that the current “Grand Bargain” represents to the legacy of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s signature gift to all Americans, Social Security and the New Deal, a point of pride for all Democrats.
WHEREAS, the Progressive Caucus of the California Democratic Party is committed to the understanding that an interest in a 2012 Democratic presidential primary challenge will not interfere with President Obama’s ability to govern and not limit his ability to do so in ways that include invoking Constitutional options, we recognize that this will, in fact, raise debate on important issues without risking the ability to mobilize and energize the base of the Democratic Party to elect a triumphant leader to counter the far-right agenda.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, to make our views heard, the Progressive Caucus of the California Democratic Party will begin the process of contacting other Democratic organizations, Democratic Party members and public organizations that share our views on the issues and which seek to alter the course of history by exploring other steps to effect a necessary change, including a possible primary challenge to President Obama.

If I were a member of that caucus, I would make LOUD noises about not only joining the Greens, but about actively proselytizing other citizens to join the Greens, with them. I wouldn’t give the CA Dem Party more than a few days to see the light, before beginning my Green evangelism tour.
Better yet, I’d look to form a Green/Progressive Dem voting bloc, which would push for Progressive Dems in some districts, if the progressive caucus is re-instated; and push for Greens in other districts.
That’s funny. The point of primary opponents is typically integrative — to make the “left-outs” feel like they’re still welcome in the Democratic Party. So the DP progressives are being decertified because they want a primary opponent. It would be funny if Obama had to campaign really hard to keep California’s electoral votes.
It looks like the Green Party’s got the same idea.
They’re officially on FDL now; check out the most recent link on their Twitter stream:
http://gp.org/index.php
That’s a laugh. The people in my family who were in the Greens left it for the Ds, because the Greens were so ineffective.
He’s already lost mine. For all the reasons the caucus gives.
I tell ya. It’s astonishing how thug-like Democratic Party Apparatchiks can be when you dare to challenge their autocratic rule. I won’t retell the story of being kicked out of the local groovy coffeehouse for actually arguing with a local Demo operative over Obama’s heresies. It actually got chesty for a bit there. That’s when I started to really get a sense of the fascism that is creeping into street level society.
Unbelievable.
What would happen if the Greens were joined by the Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party?
How many states allow a candidate to run on two or more party lines?
Might be intresting to see if, with good candidates on two separate lines, say the Dem and the Green, which would get the most votes for the same person?
The CDP/PC appears to have listed both factually and truthfully with this Resolution what Barack Obama has done/not done while POTUS since Jan.20,2009.
Can POTUS Barack Obama(DINO) deny what PC of CDP laid out here?
Too bad Barack Obama is craven, duplicitous and will ignore, brush aside or let his handlers/hacks do the dirty politics to censor the truth of what PC of the CDP has now presented with this Resolution.
Imagine if Barack Obama was to respond point to point with valid rebuttal(s)why he has not,did not or is not doing what PC/CDP laid out here?
Truth is Barack Obama cannot/would fail to demonstrate otherwise.
This willingness on part of Barack Obama to let this Resolution be now on public record and not react to it other than ignore it,mock it or send his D Party hacks/minions to undermine/banish PC of the CDP is the tell here.
Barack Obama cannot deny what this PC Resolution puts in words and very likely will not/can not summon/demonstrate honor of character to defend his personal/political integrity. That Barack Obama has failed to do so since becoming POTUS on Jan.20,2009 is a matter of knowable and known public record/viewable action(s)done/not done.
What Barack Obama has done as POTUS to absolve/continue what G.W.Bush began or what Ronald Reagan stood for 30 years ago are knowable and a matter of public record. Barack Obama defends G.W.Bush WH regime record.Admires Ronald Reagan and Reaganism. Barack Obama is doing and letting take place more Reaganism while attacking the legacy of FDR and FDR’s D Party New Deal achievements.
Barack Obama is a dishonest, duplicity practicing, money politics corrupt POTUS and cannot defend what he has done,is doing or appears to still want to do. If BO can lets see him try/do so.
If Barack Obama in truthfulness and with honesty defend himself why should/is anyone else go/going into political battle to do so?
Voting Barack Obama out of the WH in November 2012 is as much about rebuking the rotted, craven D Party he heads up and the greedy money backers and corporatists he fronts for then voting BO out of the WH.
WTH happens when you kick enough liberals out of the veal pen and into the slaughterhouse?

JFK ran on the Liberal Party ticket as well as the Democratic Party

Short audio clip here
The Democratic Party is no place for Progressives: All Democrats in the Senate voted to support the lie that Assassinating Osama bin Laden equals Justice. There are no Liberal or Progressive Democrats in the Senate. All of them voted that murder is justice. That is not Liberal or Progressive. It’s madness. It’s propaganda.
Amen.
They also all voted to approve murderer and torturer Petraeus to head the CIA (those couple unable to vote, like Barbara Boxer, later indicated they would have voted “aye).
The Democratic Party is dead for progressives, and right now, the most progressive thing one could do is spread that message. It may not be clear what grouping or party will be an organizing and political platform for progressives — and “progressive politics” will need a shaking-out to determine what such a platform really is, i.e., a split between right and left, and likely two or more spin-offs from the old Democratic Party corpse (which will continue for awhile in rump form).
These days lie ahead of us. Right now, the message is clear: the Democratic Party is no different that the GOP in any way that is important. They even essentially sold out abortion rights, the one thing they used to rope in some progressives with. Their terrible defense of such rights has Roe teetering on the edge, thanks to an unwillingness to take on ultra-conservative SCOTUS nominees from the previous administration.
Out, out, out with the Democrats, the party of the Vietnam War, the party that sold out the nation after 9/11, that gave the country away to the bankers.
Any chance that the GP will aggressively target the Veal Pen member organizations? Somebody should to do so in an organized fashion. Why should non-FDL reading progressives continue bleating inside their sub-Veal Pens?
They could crash MoveOn meetings, take out ads, expose ALEC via street actions (bringing attention to themselves as genuine do-gooders), etc.
What is MoveOn doing to expose ALEC? While it’s primarily Republicans who are in cahoots, there are Democrats in cahoots, as well. Methinks Obama is one of them – AFTER ALL, YOU HAVEN’T HEARD HIM SAY A WORD ABOUT ALEC, HAVE YOU??
Exposing ALEC will help smack down corrupted Repubs (mostly, I believe) and Dems, alike, and hopefully stire the Repub and Dem bases to action. See Progressives are Stupid if they don’t seize their opportunity to educate their Republican neighbors
If Greens took the lead in exposing ALEC to the public, I believe they’d capture the devotion of tons of progressive Dems, who’d be more willing to split their votes.
It’s not that simple. If you were a WI resident, would you support a WI Dem who skipped town to support labor rights? I think you would.
Also, all the bluster about abandoning the Dems, wholesale, doesn’t impress me since the easier task of forming a progressive voting bloc that would manifest Tea Party level of electoral aggressiveness, and successfully throw Dem incumbents under the bus, has not happened, yet.
Why should I believe that progressives will achieve the far more difficult task of supplanting the Democrats, wholesale, when they don’t get organized enough to accomplish even what the Tea Partiers have (but from their own ideological perspective)?
Hell, AFAIK, there’s not been even a single Dump Obama demonstration in the ENTIRE FREAKING USA.
Please come to the Dump Obama Rally & Speak Out on the Amherst Town Common Thursday September 15 at noon.
:-) I’m too far to go. How are you going to publicize this? One option is Meetup.com.
As long as citizen continue to buy into the two party system, that’s how long the majority will continue to lose. The leadership of both parties sold out in 1087 when they joined together to form a corporation to control who can and cannot participate in Presidential Debates. This corporation: The Commission on Presidential Debates [See Wiki] was called “the greatest fraud ever perpetuated on the American Voters” by Walter Cronkite and the League of Women Voters.
The leadership of the Democratic Party is no less corrupt than that of the Republican Party. They are BOTH experts at voter suppression. Look what the Democratic elections chair of Garland County Arkansas did during the runoff between Blanche Lincoln and Bill Halter. That huge county had 42 polling places during the primary. The county was overwhelmingly for Bill Halter. For the runoff, the Democratic leadership only allowed two polling places for the entire county. Do you really think this was anything other than voter suppression on the part of the Democrats for Blanche Lincoln.
Was this every investigated to the fullest? Not to my knowledge.
Unless you belong at least to the upper 20%, don’t every expect either party to be on your side. They represent the wealthy–including their own wealth and stock portfolios–not the 80% of Americans who earn less than $100,000 a year.
We need to form an 80% Party and whip their asses.
1987 not 1087
That’s another great tactic. Some of those Dems may actually like the “Enemy of my Enemy” angle.
Between ALEC, Kochtopus, veal pen centrists, etc. there are a lot of targets to work with.
Yeah, Greens were ineffective.
I guess effectiveness is repealing Glass-Stegall, dismantling welfare, supporting the war on drugs, terror, crime, or whatever boogeyman is popular this week.
There’s also DADT, extending the Bush tax cuts, extending the war in Afghanistan, starting a new one in Libya, this Super Congress nonsense, rebranding No Child Left Behind to that Race to the Top garbage, and pissing off most liberals in the country.
If you call this being effective, I’ll take ineffectual any day.
JFK was on a 3rd party ticket?!? Oh noez!
David,
I think the only way regular people are going to be able to see through all this Punch and Judy play is a major news editorial across the nation. Americans have to be told and shown how the elites that pay almost nothing in taxes, especially if they are sheltering offshore get more representation than the real tax payers.
We have to kick the TEA PARTY where it hurts. THey have no real reason to call themselves that because they stand for the opposite of historically correct Tea Party participants. I’ve got a special pine tar recipe just waiting to be cooked up for the crooks in DC.
Oh, and if you wish to use that idea be my guest.
You are becoming tactically more astute.
@jeffroby August 14th, 2011 at 8:41 am
:-) Well, either that or I’ve thrown so many ideas into the blogsphere, the laws of probability dictated that I’d post one or two you liked.
The difference is that this is tactically feasible with small numbers and low level of organization.
In Minnesota the Minnesota Democratic Farmer-Labor Party’s “Progressive Caucus” was threatened with expulsion because it passed a resolution it wanted brought before the State Convention for divestment of government funds from Israel. The Chair of the Caucus, Steve Linerooth, promptly and arbitrarily withdrew the resolution even though it was passed unanimously— including with his own vote.
Everyone is welcome under “the big tent” as long as they are willing to forego democracy and submit to manipulation and control.
While I was an elected member of the MNDFL State Central Committee, I was “banned” by the State Chair, Brian Melendez, because I wouldn’t stop referring using “the Israeli killing machine” in my posts.
All activists expecting to work for peace, social and economic justice in the Democratic Party eventually come up against this Wall Street machine.
Glad you chimed in on this David. I mentioned this in another blog.
More than anything else, it shows me how corrupted the dim party is and how pointless it seems to try and have true liberals take over that party.
2nd that!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Progressives should leave the Democratic party, which, while better than the GOP, has stopped serving the interests of working Americans for about the last 30+ years.
ConservaDems can have two choices:
1) Become Republicans
2) Move to the left
Any other move will result in electoral loss.
In my neck of the woods, Southern CA, the Greens are ineffective, in large part, because they are genteel (i.e., suited to polite society). Our national history shows that progress against the big business masters and other power brokers is made only after loud and physical, often violent, struggle. Which existing party is willing to that? Is the Peace and Freedom Party willing to get down and dirty?
Yep. Agreed.
I even see it just when talking to trad-Dem tribalist authoritarian voters, who have *nothing* to do with volunteering within the Dem party structure (i.e., don’t bother to phone bank or canvas neighborhoods or anything; just reflexively vote Dem, no matter what). I try to “talk softly and carry a big stick,” but no matter how deferential and gracious I am, some tribalist Dem voters can get pretty angry VERY quickly.
The Us v. Them team sports meme has been well-indoctrinated into our national psyche, methinks.
Good question, albeit it *appears* as if they’re trying the d*mndest to paint everyone into a corner, where there’s only one option: Obama. And that voters will have “no choice” but to vote for: Obama.
Pretty ugly, but that’s how I see it.
Facism 101, anyone?
… it just SEEMS that long ago!!!! heh…
Quite agree. There is no other choice, most especially at the federal level.
There *may* be some room to compromise at the State & Local level, albeit one has to be ever vigilent even locally.
Tea Partiers were financed by billionaires.
It’s a faux-populist movement, not the real thing, and hyped by the media.
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/29/opinion/29rich.html
When we have real change in the streets, mass meetings forming new parties on the spot, and maybe even new institutions, you’ll know real change is coursing through the populace.
Thanks for the post with the text of the resolution. I had read abotu this earlier, and I find this to be beyond outrageous.
In *theory* this is supposed to be a government “of the people, by the people, FOR the people,”… but clearly it no longer is.
This THUG power play by the so-called “Democratic” establishment is vile, chilling, revolting and disgusting. IF that’s the hard ball they wish to play: so be it.
I’ve done nothing but write emails & send back the various “Democratic” voter surveys filled in with a piece of my mind. I’m sure some flunky laughs and tosses ‘em in the circular file.
Time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: no way, no how am I ever voting for Obama again for anything. Not. A. Chance. I don’t give a sh*t if the “other” party runs a ticket consisting of Dick Cheney & Henry Kissinger… or for that matter, Satan & Beelzebub (note: no difference between the former & the latter). So what?
Bring on Michele Bachman. I don’t give a sh*t. It simply doesn’t matter. So-called “Democrats” are only raping & stealing from us *slower.*
THUGS. VANDALS. LIARS. CROOKS. CORRUPTION AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL.
Unconscionable. Don’t vote “Democratic” at the fed level: lying crooks & thieves, every last one of ‘em.
Wasn’t 1087 when the Crusaders sacked Jerusalem and killed everybody in it, including the native Christians? Maybe it was 1089. Close enough. Nice Freudian slip, though, Liz, because that is exactly what Obama and corporations are doing to the middle and working classes. :)
Recc’d, David. Kudos to the California Progressive Caucus.
maybe they should call themselves that and drop out of the DP
Let’s see how progressive this CA Caucus is now that they ain’t legal and have no standing with The Dims . . .
If they, en masse, don’t defect and revolt then they are simply bought and paid for . . .
Guess which way I think they’ll go . . . quietly, bleating softly in the night.
;-)
Why is this a surprise….The Democratic party is a Corporatist Party an arm called the progressive caucus is allowed to exist only to secure the votes & labor of ordinary working stiffs primarily every 4yrs when there is the US Presidential election….
It never ceases to amaze me how much the World’s Oldest Party(tm) practices undemocratic, closed-shop politics.
In my home state, the mandarins of the Michigan Democratic Party slipped in a rule requiring candidates for state party chairman to pay a $1,000 filing fee for the privilege of waging an uphill battle against State Chairman for Life Mark Brewer and his corps of union hacks.* Some have called the filing fee a poll tax; it’s more in the nature of a cover charge, intended to “keep out the riffraff.”
I’d wager that almost every state Democratic Party has rules on the books that are expressly designed to discourage a grass-roots rebellion against the apparatchiks in charge.
* Last year, Ron Gettelfinger, then the head of the United Auto Workers (and a resident of my hometown) refused to commit to a challenge to Congressman Thaddeus McCotter. That’s right. The head of the union that dominates the Michigan Democratic Party won’t commit to support the nominee of his own party in his own town.
