Good Morning, FirePeeps, Friends, Lurkers (Yeah, You).
It seems that there is an increase in the crankypantiness of people lately. A raising of the anxiety bar. I’ve noticed more and more lunatic driving habits. I’ve noticed people cutting in lines at the store. I’ve noticed people pulling into themselves instead of reaching out to others. I have recently found myself not wanting to leave my home as much. It might be a pre-winter, semi-hibernating affect.
When I find myself feeling overly nervous about my future, my children’s futures, and the general health of our planet, I sometimes turn to music for comfort. With the access we have via sites like youtube, I can find videos that make me smile, tear up, and feel a bit more optimistic.
Do you remember this video produced by the Discovery Channel that made the rounds several years ago?
Here’s another oldie, but goodie video from REM and PBS:
Something has gone wrong, (what are we gonna do?)
Sighing, sighing.
Faces have turned long, ( I am so sad!)
Crying, crying.
Hear them sob and whine, (oh oh oh)
Tearful, tearful.
That’s a real good sign,
That they’re feeling glum.
Sad, sad times have come.
Furry sobbing monsters feeling sad.
Furry sobbing monsters feeling sad. (oh so it’s sad)
Furry sobbing monsters crying.
Come on monsters, you don’t have to cry, (we don’t)
we can be happy! (all righ!t) (yeah!)
And, more recently, I watched this video that Fatster posted at her Roundup.
Partial lyrics by Alicia Lemke:
Remember we’re lost together
Remember we’re the same
We hold the burning rhythm in our hearts
We hold the flame
We’re gonna trip the light
We’re gonna break the night
And we’ll see with new eyes
When we trip the light
Seeing all those different folks, different monsters, old, young, big, little, uniforms and traditional dress, dancing and singing, gives me hope for our world. We’re all in this together and we shouldn’t forget that. It’s easy to feel defeated and scared and sad, but when we step back and take a larger look, we can indeed see with new eyes.
I hope you got a smile or two from watching these videos. Maybe you have a video that inspires peace and tranquility or laughter that you would like to share? I’d love to see and hear what others find helpful.
Welcome to Dempster’s Video Roundup. Pull up a chair, smile and tell me what’s the haps in your corner of this great big wonderful world.

Good morning, demi. Have some grandkids with me while mom attends an autism “expo” in a nearby town. We will stop at the Farmer’s Market for a couple of things, then head south to have lunch with her, and then she’ll head back home with the kids.
I’m not feeling crankypants, but I truly am tired of the politics.
Good Saturday Morning, Everyone.
I’ve got some coffee on and some zucchini nut bread we can share.
Good morning and thanks for the post and host demi.
Good morning msmolly. Have a great day with the grandkids!
can I warm it up and put some butter on it? (holding out my plate)
Taking four kids (one a teenager) to our farmer’s market will be an adventure. It is very VERY crowded on Saturday, and the other kids are 6, 9 and 11 and a bit harder to keep track of. But I think it will be sorta fun.
Now my stomach is growling. I have some zucchini bread in the freezer, but I think I will just settle for toast from homebaked bread, with some of a friend’s homemade blackberry jelly on it.
G’ Morning, The Muppets singing song about “Rainbow Connection” used to ease or raise alot spirits in our home…..Could sing it together. A bit cool in Central TX….
That’s the way, uh huh uh huh, I like it!
If I’m feeling like I want to really spoil myself, a think layer of cream cheese. Yum.
I’m glad you’re here today. See? You miss one Saturday and Peg and I go all Where Is He?
I hope everyone at your home is feeling better.
I’m pretty tired of politics too, right about now.
You’re going to have so much fun with the grandkids. I’ve mentioned before that I’m still waiting for that pleasure, but I’ve sort of adopted a few. My friend V has three delightful daughters and I’ve invited that family to celebrate Halloween here with us. We’ll barbeque and then they’ll go trick or treating in our neighborhood which is a nice safe and easy place to go door to door.
Thanks, demi, fall is always a time when I feel the pull to bundle up and bring things in, in a very comfortable way. Here in N.Central TX, the plants came in last night, we were warned about a freeze. I like winters, but then I’m not trapped inside for more than a few days at a time.
I love that song. Good old Kermit. Thanks, Bev. :)
You’re welcome, Ruth. A freeze already? Wow. It rained one day this week, so I went out and got some firewood. Got to enjoy the fireplace one evening and then we were back to warm and windy.
I’ve got about a dozen marble sized tomatoes growing in the side yard. Yay.
A good morning all,
Working in a hardware store in the frankenstorm bullseye.
Other than the mass killing of rodents (d con), and weeds (round-up ) this is a major stress zone with no mention or attention to the global Warming behind storms like these. People at their worst panic buying sumps, generators, flashlights and batteries.
And to think this is a mild beginning to the freak weather up coming.
Good morning everyone.
demi, thank you for the post but I want to know who are you calling
#$&^%#$* cranky. Just kidding.
It is so good to “see” all of you this morning.
msmolly, you have a great time with the grandkids. It will be a special day as I am sure you are aware.
All seem to be much better.
msmolly,
I was thinking some of the CBL’s homemade strawberry preserves.
Hi ya, tjbs. Why do people wait to get prepared? Panic is not the best mind set to do shopping imho. Your store must be making some good money, no?
You remind me of D.C., when we were sure that every silver haired resident with oversized car with automatic transmission chose the first flurry to go out for bread at the nearest store, Mayhem.
Hardy har har. Not you, surely. You’re one of the Nice Peoples.
And, stop calling me Shirley. (I might be in a silly mood this morning. Just warning ya.)
It is nice to “see” our friends, isn’t it?
((Mr. Canyon))
If it wasn’t crowded when you got there, now it will be. Hope the kids get offered lots of samples.
I’m wondering if the storm(s) are going to affect DC. I’m going to call my daughter later in the day and see what folks are up to there.
Sorry to do a drive by this morning folks but our dishwasher packed it in this week and as the resident “guy” I will be replacing it this morning. (shit)
Have a wonderful weekend all. Thanks again demi and I miss chatting with you all during the week.
I’m glad to hear that. I’m seriously considering getting a flu shot this year. I don’t usually, but I’m thinking I might.
Could you buy two? Mine’s been broken for about four years.
Okay. Go do your “guy” thing and know that we’ll be thinking of you.
(((oldnslow)))
(Miss you too.)
It really is good to see everyone this morning that was at the Diner.
SouthernDragon really has a lot of good, and I mean really good patrons coming to his establishment.
Has anyone heard anything from SD? I have not seen a thing since the post by OmAli a few weeks ago.
(((SouthernDragon)))
Like oldnslow, I have to run to town for a bit.
I will check in later.
Have a great weekend everyone.
Safe driving vibes coming at ya.
Boomdeyada!
No doubt there will be mucho rain, staying in is a good behavior pattern.
That’s fine for the weekend, but what about on Monday when they have to go to work?
Last weekend they went to a pumpkin patch out in the country and they brought home a pumpkin that they set outside the door of their condo. One night this week sissy got home and discovered someone had stolen her pumpkin. !!!
Ours gave out an acrid smell of burning rubber a few weeks ago, and guess what? We’re only two in the house and it takes less time to wash all the dishes by hand than to load and unload the machine. Now that I’ve got rubber gloves that fit, I actually like doing them by hand. The secret is never leave the kitchen before they are all done. Keeps the ‘load’ small and managable.
And good morning pups.
A classic song for the season. Also, it is lots of fun.
I save up my dirty dishes so I have something to do in between comments on Saturday morning. /k (I just made that up for “kidding”.)
I warned all y’all that I’m in a silly mood this morning.
Hi ya, Knut. So good to see you this morning.
Speaking of pumpkins, I made a beet salad yesterday from a recipe that uses grilled pumpkinseeds as a garnish. I had some fresh ones and cooked them up in a skillet. Pretty soon they were popping like popcorn. Very tasty. Nutty flavour. We’re going to be using more of them in different dishes.
Sad to hear, but have also had the pumpkin smashed, on the front walk. Gremlins. Going to work is less trouble if they have good connections on public transportation.
I bought two pumpkins. The larger one is for carving, has thinner flesh and more seeds. The smaller one has fewer seeds and more flesh which is for baking pumkpin pie. We “bake” our seeds with a little oil and either salt or chili pepper sprinkles. We like them.
I also finish by pouring boiling water over the dish drainer, for sanitation ideals. Yes, less trouble.
They both ride the metro. They don’t own a car. So, they pay more for housing, but because they don’t have to deal with the expense of a car, insurance, it’s a wash.
OK, you got me to de-lurk with that dancing video. Thanks, demi, that brought a tear to my eye. Deep down, everyday people are basically the same the world over, aren’t they.
Oh, and the REM/Muppetts video was great, too. Thanks for bringing a smile to my face!
It’s like what the great Victorian economist Alfred Marshall said about kids eating plum pudding. There are some who pick them out first, and others who save the best for last. It was his explanation (part of it) of time preference. Modern mathematical expositions render no more insightand just make the basic ideas more obscure. So muchfor progress. Got to get to the dishes now. Ciao everyone.
Great! That’s a flashback to the oldgold days.
Got my toes a tappin’. Thanks. OG!!!!
A Good Morning to Everyone,
Slight crankiness on account of some dental work performed in my mouth yesterday afternoon. I cooled my coffee, and have to eat soft foods for a couple of days. Also, no strenuous physical activity so I have grabbed a book, perched my butt in the lazy boy, propped a bag of frozen peas against my jaw, and begun a journey through Zinn’s, People’s History.
I’ll have to pass on the nut bread demi. Smells great though.
Woo hoo!
I’ve watched the dancing video several times. The different scenes go by so fast, it’s fun to focus on different aspects. Yes, it brings tears to my eyes too. And, isn’t the song wonderful?
Seeing with New Eyes. I like it!
I’m really glad you delurked, pastfedup.
Honey! You must have had some serious digging going on in there.
(I use frozen peas too.)
I hope the dentist gave you a script for some pain relief.
(((Nonny)))
Sending not warm good wishes to your mouth. Just made a pot of lentil soup, which I will send you via cyber world, in tomorrow’s food post. Zinn in this case should be good zen.
Hi, Hi. Bright sunny morning in mid-Michigan. So sign of the Frankenstorm in these here parts. Hope all of you have a good day. Farmers Markets, baking, cooking, pumpkin carving all good things.
Have a recipe you could pass along? Love beets.
I love lentils. I use to have a good recipe for a lentil casserole. Had forgotten that. I like to use split peas and lentils together for soup. With carrots and onions.
No pain yet (except for the bill), so just keeping the swelling down is the plan to keep it that way. Actually I’ve put two bags of thawed peas and some other veggies into a slow simmer soup kettle with a chunk of ham bone. Will use the hand held food processor to mash it up good later this afternoon.
A mid-60′s classic for ya.
Hi Hi, Bluetoe. We so often end up talking about food, don’t we?
Polly not much in the way of samples, but there are vendors with those big pretzels and bakery vendors with pastries, and lots of other things. I think it is a very unusual Farmer’s Market. Year around, indoors, has a little diner-type restaurant, and loads of vendors selling food and plants and craft things. A butcher shop, a poultry vendor, a fish seller, a big Italian deli with meats and cheeses. Etc.
South Bend Farmer’s Market
Oops! Kuroneko and I slept in today. Thanks for the post demi!
Thanks Ruth, (see my 48)
I’ve got a five gallon bucket of beets to eat too, thanks for that reminder. I should rinse and set a bunch of them to slow roasting here sometime today.
One of life’s true pleasures, if done well and I have a feeling posters here do it well.
Yup. Here’s another. Marvin Gaye What’s Going On?
Sounds like a treat in so many ways.
Enjoy.
OWCH. Nothing serious, I hope! Should do you some good to put feet up and just relax today with a book.
Si Si. Don’t forget to check out the Food Sunday Diaries.
I was a vendor at a local farmers market several weeks ago selling homemade fruit tarts (apple, pear, plum and kiwi) and orange and lemon flavored French pound cakes (Quatre Quarts). It was a lot of fun and sold most of the goods. Michigan has a Cottage Food law making it relatively easy to sell homemade baked goods at farmers markets.
Oops. Page not found.
It sounds delightful.
I usually visit my mother on Sunday’s and cook our Sunday meal but I’ll try and take a look. Thanks demi.
Glad you’re here, at any rate.
Did you see last week (I think) I said I would call you two Peggo and Nekkie.
I don’t know what the laws are here in Indiana. In addition to the diner, many vendors sell food. There’s an Asian booth that sells interesting looking foods, and the Italian deli among others. And there are vendors selling pies and jams and such. I don’t know what permits they need.
I wish I could have scheduled on one of the rainy days last week. I should be back to normal (don’t ask my teen to qualify that word as it applies to me) in a day or so. ;^)
OOPS. Not sure what happened. Let me try again.
South Bend Farmer’s Market
Yep, I saw that. But it doesn’t obligate me to call ourselves that! ;)
Well dang, that one isn’t working either. Here’s the raw link.
http://www.southbendfarmersmarket.com
Of course not, Peg. :)
Anything new in your life? No tornadoes or giant roaches?
For some reason it is appending this diary’s URL in front of the Market’s URL. I did it the way I always do, so not sure why. Raw link works. Prolly nobody is THAT interested. Sheesh.
A cat and its fan club, I would suggest.
Uh huh. Teens don’t think any adult is “normal.”
Nope, nothing like that. It got kinda cold here. Maybe that’s why we didn’t want to get out of our cozy bed this morning.
Hi Bluetoe2, from west, and just across the big pond. The cottage kitchen provision sounds great, here a state certified and inspected kitchen is required. It is not a difficult hurdle to cross and there are two cooperatively run kitchens in the county.
Cook the beets in a steamer or an aluminum packet till done and let cool and peel.
Cut in small cubes.
Dressing:
Half acup of Greek yogurt. If you can’t get the Greek, use regular and drain it in a cheese cloth. You want it to be thick.
Two tbs of finely cut shallots
Two tbs of cider vinagre or white balsalmic
A nice big hunk of fresh dill very finely chopped
Olive oil
Very big handful of grillrd pumpkinseeds
Salt and pepper.
Mix it all together and let it sit for a couple of hours to let the flavours blend
That’s a great looking farmers market. South Bend is fortunate.
Back in the day, they used to end every Halloween dance with this.
No sheesh. I’m interested. One of the largest and diverse in the mid-west. That’s impressive. Glad you have access to that.
There’s a farmer’s market held at the community college here, five minutes away, and I think I’ll check it out later today.
We went there last year and bought some hand thrown pottery which we gave away as gifts. People love that kind of stuff.
Thanks Knut. Think I’ll put it on Sunday’s menu. I like to roast beets in foil, seems to bring out their sweetness.
For some reason, I’ve been sleeping in lately. And, I love it. When it was so hot for so long, I had to get up early if I wanted to walk in the park without melting. Now, I can go anytime during the day and we’ve all gone together in the evening. Goggie too.
We’ve gotten into the way back machine, I think.
Lotsa memories those old songs spark.
Have to run along. Hope all of you have a restful, productive and recuperative weekend.
Hey! I’m still waiting for oldnslow to show up with my new dishwasher.
Bye Bye. Be good, Bluetoe2.
Sorry I was so late but it’s left me very little time to visit. I gotta get in the shower and get moving. I’ll still be around but there might be some gaps. Thanks again for the post and host demi. I’ve also noticed the stress related rudeness. I think we all have an obligation to ourselves and our fellow human beings to try to relieve that stress instead of taking it out on each other.
Not that I’m perfect…By any stretch.
I have to break it in for you first. Might be a year or longer….
When I was a kid, my grandma used to take us kids to the farmer’s market in Cleveland. there was an east side market and a west side market. The east side market was within walking distance. That market basically died when the interstate project took out those neighborhoods in the 60′s, but the west side market is still going strong.
Har har. We can share. Enjoy your shower and your day.
Love you, girl.
Oh, and yesterday, the guy in the car behind me was upset that I hadn’t pulled up into the intersection, because I didn’t want to block cross traffic, but he couldn’t wait. He honked. I glared. He flipped me off. I flipped him back. Then, he screamed Bitch at me. Lovely.
See you later.
Just a couple of weeks back I had to drive into Dallas by the route I once drove daily to work, and realized how little I now have to withstand on a daily basis. Do not know how easy I was to be around with that kind of stress.
I encountered one of the only two stop lights in our whole county and had to wait, with nobody else in sight, last week. Just slightly different driving stress levels around here.
Here is a country song for the season.
I tapped my horn yesterday on the way to work because a Honda was drifting into my lane. Both of that car’s left wheels were into my lane when I honked. The driver had her cell phone glued to her ear but that didn’t stop her flipping me off. (Dunno what she was holding the steering wheel with at that time) I get a kick out of people who screw up like that and then get mad when you prevent an accident. I know it’s usually just embarrassment at doing something so stupid but sometimes you get the people who are pissed off that you held them up by refusing to run a red light or stop sign. How inconsiderate of you!
Yippie yi ay, Yippie yi Yo.
Love Johnnie.
You’re on a roll.
Here’s another Halloween oldie.
I try to calm myself before I get into my car and remind myself that almost none of the people that do stupid, inconsiderate things are specifically angry at ME, they are just oblivious in general and if it wasn’t for my being there, it would have just as easily been someone else. I gotta keep myself from taking such things personally!
What is wrong with me? Following driving rules.
The worst part was that James was with me and it upset him.
Thanks, though Frankie Lane still is my artist of choice.
Aside; gave candy to the crisis center, since their donations cannot be spent on trash, but the kids get hungry for sodas and candy.
The landlord initially told me he would have one delivered. Now he informs I should get one. (heavy sigh) So I have decided to sit on my fat butt for a while.
Hey Demi & Pups of Fire:
I’m late to the party, as usual. Where’s the coffee and bacon? (Mmmmm….bacon…)
We had an ugly road rage incident very close to my home a couple of weeks ago. Oblivious young woman chatting on her cell phone cuts off angry old white guy so angry old white guy starts shooting at oblivious young woman. Oblivious young woman loses control and starts rolling in front of angry old white guy, causing angry old white guy to lose control and start rolling. Oblivious young woman winds up crippled for life while angry old whit guy winds up dead. Were two lives worth such a minor and frequent incident? Arguably the roads are just a bit safer without oblivious young woman and angry old white guy on them but that incident made me redouble my self calming protocol and to renew my rule of never getting involved with somebody else’ road rage issues.
Bacon is about to go on. How soon can you get here?
On the other hand, wouldn’t a heavily-armored, fully-loaded come in handy during those episodes? Just sayin’…
That would be “heavily-armored, fully-loaded vehicle come in handy…
No edit function. Grrrr….
And yes, I meant shooting, not shouting… Scares the crap outta me!
Yeah right. There’s no fat butts at your house.
I remember when I was a kid and we were pleading with dad to get a dishwasher. He laughed and said I’ve got three. (Me and my two sisters.)
Actually oldnslow and the lovely CBL are quite slender or were a couple of years ago. I still owe them a visit. I’ve finally gotten serious about looking for a job in the Austin area though.
Hmph! That’s pretty much what my dad said. Never within earshot of my mom though!
OMG! That’s a horrific tale, but one with a lesson. Don’t shoot and drive.
I’ve only seen photos, but yes they are slim. No Fat Butts.
The scary thing for me was that it was so close. There are too damn many combat veterans around here and not all of them are liberal old teddy bears like SouthernDragon. If they were, the world would be a much better place.
Since talking here at PUAC about a truck being safer than a minicar, I’ve been informed they are unbalanced and harder to drive and that small cars have an advantage especially for less expert driving.
Nope. No heavy duty potties needed at their house!
OK you two got me. There are no fat butts at our house. (unless you count Mike-the-cat)
Trucks have more metal surrounding you but they have a higher center of gravity. BOTH the vehicles in the above described incident were SUVs. Too easy to roll, unless you know what you’re doing.
I’ll bet Mikey likes it!
Ha!
I’ve got to get out of this chair, so I’m going to say thanks to everyone for showing up today.
Oldgold gets the music sharing award today.
Take care Allayouz.
Thanks for hosting demi,
It was nice to be able to chat this morning. I am soft boiling a couple of eggs for brunch. There is an environmental seminar this afternoon that might be instructive to sit through, specific to ecology and local farming practices. Feeling just enough out of sorts that a nap seems likely necessary before heading out to hear that talk.
Thanks for hosting.
Speaking of easy to roll; the new piece of toll road, conecting Austin and San Antonio (almost), opened with an 85 mph speed limit and there have apparently been 3 accidents already. The story I heard last night, as yet unconfirmed, was that all 3 involved wild boar on the roadway. Sounds ugly no matter what you’re driving.
He’s a sweet old guy. He would looovvvee you. (he has a thing for blonde females)
(damn no edit function) connecting damnit.
Thanks again and have a wonderful weekend.
I find that road courtesy in exact opposition to the size of the vehicle. Accordingly, I steer well out of the way of those giant, over sized, compensating-for-something pick-up trucks that barrel down the road 24 hours / day. Also, too: “Soccer moms” who drive obliviously in SUV’s. The smaller the lady, the larger the vehicle. It’s a very strange phenomena.
Do not want to go 85 miles an hour next to most of the drivers I see anyway, but when you’ve displaced the wildlife population and it’s looking for its way back to someplace it thinks it lives, you’re asking for trouble. Sad.
I heard about that. Think I’ll stay with 35…
Definitely will have to get up and visit Mike one day soon. Gotta get going myself. Have a wonderful weekend all and see some of you at PUYC tomorrow.
Sometime during college I became familiar with the dictum that drivers of Jags had small penises. Do not ask what research was involved.
With that I better say toodle oo or whatever passes for an OUtahere before I get less model behaviorish, thanks for good company all chair occupants.
I use the northernmost section (about 14 miles) of that road every week day to and from work. The speed limit up here is 80. I rarely exceed 75 and that is not at all comfortable on a motorcycle in the pitch black of 5:45 am.
I am out again. Great weekend all.
Have a good one and be careful on that road!
Demi, you’re spot-on about the crazy level going up, here in Myrtle Beach.
A friend puts it simply: “Rome is falling”.
You can’t even rent a decent flick anymore. It’s all about mindless violence, t&a, car chases, etc…the dumbing down of amurka…
late myself, too…slept moderately late and then got myself outta the house to do a couple errands.
WAs hoping for a Southern Dragon update…
paging OmAli!!!!!! Haven’t seen Om around much this week.
Cool weather…yeah! Rain so hard that my shoes got soaked in the parking lot yesterday…not so much. It just poured for a few hours, and there were intersections flooded, etc., etc. So I went back to work wearing boots and having dug out my old raincoat…an hour later the sun came out, and shone the rest of the day. Go figure.
but still it was about 50 degrees this morning, even at 10 am. Very cold for us, and considering Thursday it hit 92, it was kind of a shock.
Last night, I got nothin’ done ’cause the minute I sat down, the three cats all piled onto me. They spent the evening washing each other’s head, shifting position, occasionally jumping off for awhile, etc., etc. Big Boy was in his bed in the kitchen; still can’t lure him into the rest of the house. Hmm, two cats just arrived on my lap now…
So good to see everybody, even though they’ve all left now. ((((nonquixote)))) glad you’re taking it easy. Hope you heal without pain.
And, as always these days, (((((Southern Dragon))))
Oops, and demi, good on you for doing PUAC this morning.
Not a problem. I enjoy hosting PUAC once in a while.
It seems OmAli is the only one in touch with him. There are so many people concerned for Southern Dragon, and I don’t know what to say.
Thanks demi.
Shoe-ah.
Boo!
