It’s been a busy few weeks at Occupy Tacoma. We can’t thank you enough for your second package filled with thermal underclothing, fleeces, jackets, hats and facemasks. The weather has been hovering in the 30′s all week, and so many occupiers have expressed their sincere gratitude for the extra warmth your donations provided them. (sorry for the lack of light in the video; it gets dark now around 4pm and I didn’t get the donations passed out quickly enough to catch the end of daylight).
We’ve been participating in a growing number of inter-occupation actions with Olympia, Seattle, and other cities across the entire west coast as well as planning and executing smaller actions on a local level. On December 6, Occupy Tacoma joined with throngs of concerned citizens on a march to the Tacoma City Council to protest cuts on social services and first responders. On December 12, Occupy Tacoma held an informational demonstration at the Port of Tacoma to promote our solidarity with the both the ILWU’s fight against the anti-union EGT in Longview as well as the efforts of independent truck drivers organizing against the Goldman Sachs-backed SSA terminal in Los Angeles. Tacoma chose not to form a blockade as we do not have SSA or EGT terminals in our port. A smaller group from Occupy Tacoma traveled to Seattle to participate in their port shutdown. A wonder montage video of the day’s events made by some local highschool students can be seen below.
Our next planned action will be a birthday party for the Bill of Rights at our park on December 15, with members and groups from our community joining us in a celebration that will include a reading of the Bill of Rights, speeches, and a birthday cake with other refreshments. We are also preparing to send a contingent down to Olympia, WA on the morning of the 15th as of this morning we are hearing that a possible eviction notice from the state will be delivered today to the Occupy Olympia campground there.
We in Tacoma continue to have an excellent relationship with our local police force, and as evictions of other Occupy camps continue to rise, we are more determined than ever to continue our peaceful presence in Occupation Park. Your generosity and continued support have been invaluable to keeping our spirits up and our toes warm. Thank you all, and we look forward to updating you soon…

That mic check was so great to hear – thank you for posting! We’re honored to support Occupy Tacoma and all the rest.
The montage put together by the high school students is really impressive, btw – great editing.
Thank you, thank you, djvjgrrl, for this excellent post. What a great video. We were there in the yellow zone and couldn’t really see what was happening. How awesome.
We took the bus back to Westlake and had the good fortune to meet Dorli Rainer . I thanked her for her incredible interviews and running with the ball. She’s very small in stature!. Those Serve and Protect servants pepper sprayed the wrong little old lady.
Thanks again.
Thanks for the update, djvjgrrl.
I should have said we were at the Seattle port shut down. Occupy is incredible to see in action.
i was there too, openhope! but in the red zone…in fact i’m actually in the video for 1 second center screen at 3:23. it was a great day and i was proud to join seattle for their peaceful action. i too am amazed at what a great job the high school students did at shooting and editing the video. most videos only show the dramatic moments of protests where the police are getting violent. i thought this one really captured a sense of the entire day, before all the police drama started…
thanks for your kind comments, everyone
Awesome. There’s so much talent out there, just waiting for a chance to shine!! Nice montage, great music, great pacing on the material content and on the shots.
x2
tweeted and recommended with thanks!
Great stuff, that video was a great one and I remember how powerful it was for us to shut down terminal 18, and then terminal 5.
Can’t make it to tonight’s action at the Federal Building.
One of the next targets on the radar (and we’ll hear more of this in the coming weeks), is EGT is bringing in their first shipment through their non-union, shady port out of Longview Washington. EGT is of course one of the primary targets for the port blockade for their union-busting tactics.
So, when that ship comes to port, we will be blocking it. Well, hopefully anyway. I’ll br driving from Seattle down to Longview, but I suppose we will see what GA’s in Portland, Seattle, and anywhere in between come up with to target and disrupt EGT.
We gotta take a stand and so ‘No more American ports in private/international corporations’ hands’ . These are OUR ports, not theirs!
Great report and thanks for keeping us updated. It’s great to see more and more Firedogs getting involved. Recommended.
Good job, Tacoma!
Yes Occupy Olympia had two evictions in the space of yesterday and this morning. I understand that “Occupy Olympia’s Rachel Corrie Community Center” (Occupy Olympia, by Bruce, Dec. 16, 2011) has to be resolved in court around the issue of a quitclaim deed.
