A $100 grocery gift card from Fire Dog Lake’s occupy supply arrived just in time for the end of the holiday season at Occupy Tacoma. The camp, which is now the only full time occupation in western Washington State, was delighted to stock up on sorely needed staples…coffee, creamer, sugar and instant soup topping the list.
Despite raids on other large occupations throughout the state, Occupy Tacoma continues to have a positive relationship with local law officials and has been free to focus on community building, organization, and supporting local and state wide actions.
A short tour of the camp taken this week can be found below. (warning, audio recorded very loudly – i suggest turning down volume significantly before starting video)
Occupy Tacoma’s action work-group is currently working on a theatrical action for Jan 20th to occupy the courts and is in the planning stages of organizing our upcoming participation in response to the open call to action from the ILWU local 21 against EGT in Longview, Washington later this month.
Occupy Tacoma’s population continues to grow despite harsh winter conditions, with a new steady overnight camper population of 57 people at last count. We’ve added a new community tent and built a green dishwashing station with it’s own grey water filtering system. We’ve recently had a marine cell battery donated and are hard at work building our first bike generator.
We’ve also been quite active with our livestream team, and have recently had some of our regular shows aired regularly on global revolution, occupy unity, and occupy earth channels.

“…open call to action from the ILWU local 21 against EGT in Longview, Washington later this month.”
Wonderful! I may go try to find the story, unless you can provide a link. We love the story here! Glad to hear you’re planning already to help, and about the theatrical venture on the courts. Is it in the way of Uncuts? Humorous by chance?
We will be waiting for more; thank you so much for all you’re doing in Tacoma. It’s great to hear local police, and I’d think by extension, the city officials, are being so decent. Lincoln, NE is experiencing the same thing, though in a Very Red state. Go figure.
Thank you for this report djvjgrrl!
Keep up the awesome work!
Thanks so much VJ, this is awesome! Give our best to everyone at OT. Thank them all so much for keeping the flame alight.
Hey djvgrrl,
Really great to hear,
The Longshoreman of Local 21 are a good bunch of guys, that you are building bridges there is important stuff. Keep up the good work and thanks for the report about Occupy Tacoma.
Wow–57 overnight campers. That is awesome.
Thank you for the tour, djvjgrrl. You guys rock!
WOW is right.
Canada is now down to only one Occupy encampment. It’s Occupy New Foundland right on the water front (photos of one of the two full-time campers and the encampment by CBC News in “Occupy camp holds on in St. John’s,” Posted: Jan 4, 2012 7:12 PM NT, Last Updated: Jan 4, 2012 6:54 PM NT).
hi wendy!
here is a link to ILWU’s president McEllrath’s call for support: http://www.longshoreshippingnews.com/2012/01/ilwu-pres-mcellrath-prepare-to-take-action-when-egt-vessel-arrives/
for ongoing updates on the occupy longview solidarity action, please see their facebook page as it is updated constantly with new info and ways to participate: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Occupy-Longview/273251646031033
Occupations all over the Washington State and all the way into California are planning to participate. I believe Occupy Oakland is bussing people up, if possible. EGT is keeping the dates of the shipment secret for obvious reasons, so when the call to show up comes, it will be only a day or two before…
thanks for your comments
dakine, thanks for your kind words…it is people like you who keep our spirits determined when morale is low.
jane, i can only say from the bottom of my heart that the support you and firedoglake have given over the last months to occupy tacoma have made an incredible difference. occupiers are proud to wear the occupy supply logo and the gear has kept so many warmer and dryer in quite miserable conditions. knowing there are so many people out there caring about and supporting our efforts keeps our hearts strong.
this site and meeting with the other liasons has been a fantastic source of info, support and hope as we all continue to fight economic and political injustice together. take a minute and give yourself and everyone at fire dog lake a BIG pat on the back for us (or a hug would be even better)!
thanks robert,
we are all in this together, and we are proud to support our brother’s and sisters of local 21. thanks for your kindness
it’s pretty amazing considering the weather conditions…windy, wet and cold! we’ve had a lot of awesome occupiers join us from other camps that were shut down recently, causing a jump of over 10 people. the campers our here are extraordinarily dedicated – i physically couldn’t do it anymore after mid november (guess i’m getting old).
solidarity, occupy new foundland!!! thank you mzchief for the info.
thanks for taking the time to read and comment, openhope. every kind word makes us stronger and more determined. blessing to all for a happy new year
Well I think McEllrath has learned from the democracy movement, don’t you? Plenty big news; I love the hell out of it!
Local 21 workers are strong and committed.
Thanks for the video tour – all of that rain would sure make it tough!
