“USA!!! USA!!!” they chanted at us to drown out our own chants of “DREAM ACT AND FULL EQUALITY!” The gay priest was at the front of our little group, and a balding man with a red face and sunglasses got within a few inches of his face to scream. Balding Guy, a member of Gay Priest’s former congregation, grabbed the priest and pushed him back violently. The next thing I knew, a man in a cowboy hat and large, crooked, cigarette-stained teeth that he was baring bulled his way into our priest. Erika was behind him, and took a misfired punch in the face as Cigarette Teeth barreled forward, cursing, swinging and pushing. A few people were sent back into me, and for a minute there he stood in front of me in the open. I wasn’t sure if I should take a swing or not to slow the guy down for my friends. Erika was stumbling backwards into Felipe and Mayra. Mayra was tiny, so Felipe grabbed her as the crowd was isolating her from the group. Both Balding Guy and Cigarette Teeth ultimately ignored the neatly dressed redhead with the camera while he and a few other self-appointed redneck peacekeepers pushed them past me while I trailed behind.
“You see, Obama was an organizer, and organizers have no experience creating jobs. They’re just agitators, looking to force a few corporations to make concessions, which a few of the weak ones do” she told me. She was a 52-year-old woman standing next to me in a blue Romney shirt. Sweating alongside her while someone 20 feet to our left hit the ground from heat exhaustion was a white haired friend. They both wore blue Romney shirts and a rhinestone elephant pin. I told them that I was an undecided Independent just here to cover the RNC, and they instantly became hardcore evangelists, asking me if I liked taxation and big government, clapping their hands and then saying “then you know who to vote for” after I answered. Traveling across the country, you learn that EVERYONE lives in some sort of bubble, though for these Floridians it seemed far stronger than normal.
“Of course corporations are supposed to be greedy, every decision maker has a fiduciary obligation to their shareholders. I want someone who can navigate the laws and get the most they can without breaking the rules like that” I offered the group, tasting bile rise up in my throat as I did. With their rants about big government and regulations, it seemed that they wanted neither community organizers, nor government, to protect them from corporations and industry when they found it profitable to crush them. They’re living in denial that the only reason we don’t still have children working in factories, like many other countries still do, is because of the progressive movement they hate so much. I wondered if they realized the implications of their own argument, but decided to only nod along since I didn’t want to bring unwanted attention before the big show.
My new companions told me about the recent polling that put Romney ahead of Obama in Florida, encouraged me to watch a documentary on Obama called “2016” and that they were confident he’d win. Talking around with the crowd, it was more of the same: Liberals and the media are misinformed scum, we’re the only ones who understand the facts and Romney is going to crush Obama.
The opening speakers on the stage were the usual variety, that is, local politicians. Aside from a joke about everyone’s personal sphere of influence being more powerful than Clint Eastwood, they went through the usual routine that anyone who goes to these events is familiar with: Obamacare sucks, Romney will create jobs and lower taxes and Obama, nice guy that he is, tried BUT failed. The biggest difference now was that they were talking about Paul Ryan’s mother instead of how Obama robbed Medicare. The man behind me, who would engage in some of the shoving later, agreed loudly with every assertion made, giving a “YEA!” or “AMEN!” When Romney came out, they cheered as fervently as I’d seen them at least a dozen other times before at any Romney rally, despite the fact that the delegates were putting up a fight for Santorum and Ron Paul right up ‘til the bitter end. Romney dropped a few of the same lines we’re all used to, like a Broadway actor faking his own death and kissing the same girl for the first time twice every night, before passing the microphone to his wife.
It always strikes me how friendly everyone is until they figure us out, usually when we start chanting. Once the chants started and I began filming, the women took a step back in shock and offense. This quickly led to the mild beating and berating. After the chaos in the cowboy hat, the crowd parted nicely when the group was shoved through and quickly closed behind them, strongly encouraging us towards the exit that the police hurried us through. On the way out, some horrible woman with shriveled skin that looked like drooping, scorched earth, sort of a browner Jan Brewer, leaned over the barricade as far as she could with her equally horrible husband, screaming at us accusingly in tongues as she stuck a finger in my face. She was nearly completely hysterical in her fit of blind rage and, as I flipped them off over my shoulder while I walked away, I vaguely heard someone scream “nice.”
All in all, other than Erika and our priest’s bruises, not a bad demonstration.

I can’t really tell from the video posted what actually happened.
And, your writing, including lines The next thing I knew, a man in a cowboy hat and large, crooked, cigarette-stained teeth that he was baring… made me stop reading the piece.
If you’re writing a novel, then, descriptive statements help, but in a piece like this, it just seems like you are generalizing a look to make a statement about his character. I would think his actions would speak enough.
Thanks for sharing an experience, but I’m not interested in supporting your writing.
Oh, I noticed that you just signed up at FDL today.
Newbies always try too hard, from my experience here.
Relax, and maybe you’ll get it.
Wow, harsh reception. Sorry about that, but some people here can be very blunt and crude. And some have turf issues. No idea why.
I personally think you are just sharing a story. As for your descriptions, I have no problem with them. Not sure why others did.
I do NOT think you have shared this piece with us because you want anyone to “support your writing”. Not sure what is up with that comment. Cold and just plain mean to say something like that. No idea why anyone would say that.
Please do not think we’re all like that.
I enjoyed the piece.
I find it interesting you wrote “She was nearly completely hysterical in her fit of blind rage”. This country is so divided I don’t think it can ever be put back together. Of course the 1% want us divided and fighting each other. Easier to steal from the 99% that way.
And of course that same irrational hatred and vitriol is on both sides. Classic divide and conquer strategy by the 1%. And it worked.
I think this is an interesting, well-written article. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Whenever Obama is mentioned it would be appropriate to refer to him as Professor Powder Puff.
Let’s call what just happened in Tampa what it really was:
The Republican National Swift Boat Liars Convention.
Lie after lie after lie.
Tambershall
I just said what I thought. that was my honest reaction, and I’m sorry you thought I was crude.
I guess I’m not the only one with sensitive feelings right now.
I’m sensitive to physical appearances relating to something Bad about a person.
I say actions speak louder.
Peg gets a hall pass on the Mantatee description, though.
I think the guy went into the belly of the beast and he has every right to be descriptive, if it’s true. Seeing as I wasn’t there, I have no reason not to believe him.

Rough crowd
Hello, everyone. I’m apologizing for hitting on the negative characterization in the writing style of this diary. I realize that everyone has a different voice, and the tribe seems to have spoken.
Sorry.
Glad everyone got out with no broken bones. Thanks for sharing.
This brings back unpleasant memories. I have had my share of encounters with rabid (white) Republicans making utterly outlandish statements, wanting to strangle me for countering with reasonable points in debate, and then shouting me down with “if you don’t like it, why don’t you leave?” which is the last refuge of the weak minded. There’s no use arguing with this type because they’re thoroughly brainwashed and self righteous, much like the fundamentalist Christians in my family who are also proud to be Republicans. A mind is a terrible thing to lose (as VP Dan Quayle so aptly bungled a well-known slogan).
Demi you have every right to speak your mind and call it as you see it.
But shouldn’t new writers also be allowed to share, even if not written for everyone.
I got no problem with you. I’ve said plenty of stuff here that I probably should have toned down. (But not all, and some of it, I actually did tone it down, which I hope signifies the level of disgust I have with some people.)
Either way I think it’s important to have new pieces, new voices, and new perspectives even if I disagree with them. I may disagree with Barefoot on many of her perspectives, but I feel it should be shared and discussed so all can have a healthy and engaging conversation.
And I’m sorry but what you initially wrote was just mean. I can hear it coming through your words. You obviously had a very strong reaction to it. Fine. But what you wrote shuts down conversation. It does not encourage conversation. You just shot it down (which is fine), but then you put, “Thanks for sharing an experience, but I’m not interested in supporting your writing.” I mean what is that? Do you know how condescending and insulting that sounds? And you don’t even know this person.
And then you wrote, “Newbies always try too hard, from my experience here. Relax, and maybe you’ll get it.” Do you know how condescending that sounds? And how does this help anyone? The writer? How is what you wrote a productive critique in any way? He should relax? I mean come on and read it yourself. What if someone had put that on one of your posts? How would you feel? Encouraged to try again?
Once again, I got no problem with you. But I’m just asking how is this useful.
I wasn’t going to respond to you because I did not want to insult you. I just want good conversation. However, I am deeply troubled by what you just said, “and the tribe seems to have spoken”. The tribe? Seriously? I’m sorry, but do you know how that sounds? Read it. I know sometimes we write things and don’t factor in other perspectives. But, “the tribe”? Is that what we are? A tribe? With our tribal-ism thinking? I just can’t get over this choice of words.
Tribe think? Group think? The “tribe” has spoken, so it’s all good? Well the American tribe is going to elect a corporatist either way. Is that OK since “the tribe has spoken”?
I keep running into this kind of thinking at FDL and I’m disappointed by it here. I ran into the same thing when I first joined FDL. And then again and again when certain “issues” arise. FDL ain’t a public site, fine. But aren’t we better than this? Shouldn’t we be? Shouldn’t we try to be better than this? Especially here at FDL? We shouldn’t cower in our little turf. We shouldn’t make snide and snickering remarks to new diary writers. Even if we don’t agree, shouldn’t we just logically dissect it and use logic to prove them wrong instead of childish schoolyard stuff? (Ain’t meant at you, meant at all of us.)
Anyway, enough of this rant. I believe I have made my point. No insult meant, only elaboration on some thoughts. Apologies if any insult is misinterpreted by you. For none was meant.
Peace.
Good post and great video.
How revealing that the Reps’ response to “Dream Act and full equality” was to yell “USA!” which is to say, “If you are not just like us, you are not included in what we consider the US.” Their response was to insist on a narrow, exclusive identity, with the irony that these are the kind of hyper-patriotic folks who loath freedom and democracy.
What causes a person to despise anyone who isn’t exactly like them? Number one answer on the board: Fear. What we see in that video is a whole crowd of shit-scared people in the process of being flogged with more Fear by politicians who they imagine represent them.
Your point is well taken. I confess thst I have been guilty of becoming overly inflamed by certain topics or comments. I can be quite immature, despite my advanced age-still just a child at heart! Of course, you know of what I speak, as you, yourself have been a victim of my uncalled for spitefulness.
I believe that, to some extent, visceral reaction to some things is merely part of the human condition. But as you say, a bit of graciousness can go a long way.
and a bit of caligula-ing, the strippers went home rich
Well I’m sorry that you feel that way, however, this was supposed to have a heavy flavoring of character. I have plenty of other, dryer pieces up that are more objective analysis, but he did punch a female friend of mine in the face in front of me, so I decided on a bit more whimsy than perhaps you would prefer. In the end, can’t please ‘em all
Thanks for the advice, though I”m not too sure what the “it” is
Thanks, this was definitely more about a perspective than the usual, more objective political analysis I do
Hahaha, because he fights crime in a colorful costume?
Thanks dude. I’ll be honest, there are some of my friends that had a different experience on the way out saying that people were nice, while I just had that crazy lady screaming spittle at me
Heh, thanks for sharing. It’s definitely a bit intimidating when the crowd is against you, more so when you see one of them ready to get physical because, if you win that fight, they all instantly jump in. I’m reminded of how a character in Huck Finn stared down the crowd from a rooftop with a gun calling them all cowards who couldn’t kill him so long as they didn’t have hoods or couldn’t get behind him. Unfortunately I had neither a musket, nor a rooftop, and was completely surrounded
