It will soon be dawn on the Eastern Mediterranean, and unless the Israeli Navy has ventured far out into international waters to intercept the boats and ships, the run to the coast should begin soon:
The live streaming isn’t at a host that I can download to The Seminal, but here’s the link.
Here is a link to freegaza.org’s twitter page.
The live video feed went blank about four hours ago. For a while, there was test pattern, then blank screen with the little round logo on it. The twitter feed has not been updated in over seven hours. Maybe everyone is just asleep. Hopefully, there are very active watches at the rails and on the radars.
It is 5:05 a.m. in Cairo and Tel Aviv right now. First light comes at just before 6:00 a.m. there.
I’ll bring more information to this post as comments, as the day there unfolds. I’ll try to remain here until the vessels either run the blockade or are intercepted and captured.
The best articles to have appeared on Saturday did not come from the American Press. BBC did a video scene that shows they have reporters in Gaza, on a ship in the flotilla, and near the detention facility the Israelis have set up in the port of Ashdod.
The most recent story, posted minutes ago in the Jerusalem Post, by Yaakov Katz, reports the following:
The Israel Navy was gearing up on Saturday night for what could become a dramatic showdown with five protest ships on their way to test the blockade of the Gaza Strip.
Technical difficulties held up the fleet, which was initially scheduled to arrive off the Gaza coast on Saturday but is now expected on Sunday. While eight ships were initially scheduled to sail to Gaza, in the end a total of five ships were reported to be on their way after three suffered technical malfunctions.
One of the highest profile figures on the ships is Balad MK Haneen Zoabi, who said she was proud to do her part to end what she called a siege on Gaza. Right-wing MKs called for Zoabi’s arrest and ouster from the Knesset.
“Zoabi is working together with Israel’s enemies to encourage terrorism and harm Israel’s image internationally, and these acts constitute treason,” Likud MK Danny Danon wrote to Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein in his request for him to order Zoabi’s arrest upon her arrival in Israel.
Part of the delay was caused by difficulties the organizers encountered in trying to have two dozen more would-be passengers, including 19 European legislators and a Holocaust survivor, join the ships anchored in international waters off Cyprus. The Cypriot government did not allow smaller boats to ferry the group to the flotilla.
Authorities in Cyprus said the decision was made to protect the island’s “vital interests,” including economic ties with Israel.
Organizers then appealed to the Turkish government to get the group out via a Turkish-controlled northern Cyprus port. Turkish Cypriot officials have said they want to help the group as much as they can.
In addition to encountering diplomatic obstacles and mechanical problems, the ships reportedly lost their satellite phone connections twice.
Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said on Friday that Israel would not allow the protest ships to violate its sovereignty, and that they would be stopped.
Let’s hope and pray nobody gets hurt.

The Israeli’s are going to arrest one of their own, who is on the ship(s)?
Wow. Likud, making fundie’s everywhere look progressive.
*shakeshishead*
And bless her for standing up for her beliefs, and the Palistinean’s needs . . .
Bless her a hundredfold.
israel has done and is doing all it can to aid the Palestinians to recover and get their lives together. As in all cases, israel takes the high road. israel certainly would not punish civilians for what the massive Palestinian army did to israel a couple of years ago.
Rubbish.
Ok, ET, checking in . . . and I’ll try and ignore the baiters . . but I’m here and standing by for the live bloggy . .
Thanks for all yer doin on this.
There are SO many ways this could go wrong, despite Israel’s professed intent, or hidden intent.
But you don’t fuck with the Turks . . . is the Turk ship(s) still in the flotilla?
That’s a key indicator . . . .
Well played.
I thought it was snark
Me, too.
Yes, the largest vessel is the Turkish cruise ship, that holds hundreds of passengers, and has locks on all doors, including heavy security doors to the bridge.
The MV Rachel Corrie is way behind – probably 100 hours from Gaza, at least – and will not participate in the breakthrough attempt.
I was about to ask if the MV Rachel Corrie was part of the 5 ship flotilla…! Isn’t the Corrie carrying the bulk of the material…?
I posted a version of this at my most recent previous on the flotilla, but it has a bit of newer material. It is from an IDF/Mossad- fed site:
About half of it. The flotilla’s sponsors have claimed some of the engine problems on two smaller vessels and the Rachel Corrie appear to probably be sabotage.
*aargh* Give me a break…! Apartheid…? Cast Lead…? WTF…?
These clowns have as much chance of falling overboard from too much beer as from anything else. Archie Bunker types with hot little cigarette-type, testosterone-fueled boats, from what I’ve seen and read.
Maybe some of those foul-mouthed Americans in Max Blumenthal’s film screaming about how they hate America.
Nah, no snark tags for us lesser believers . . . ;-)
I’m just catching on to it, thanks to Newt . . . was that edited?
I don’t recall seeing it twice and thinking snark . . . ?
I’m not ALWAYS this slow . . . . sigh.
I would have asked about that, but didn’t.
Seems to be THE first question to ask, IMHO . . .
Too bad the Rachel Corrie is behind schedule . . . sigh. Supplies needed and all that.
Bear, let me formally offer an apology for failing to recognize your comment as snark.
My bad . . . but good snark will DO that sometimes . . . ;-)
Uh, it WAS snark, right . . . ;-)
All I see on the live video is black background with a blue ball with a blue label under it.
Yep, same here in CA.
That is all that was showing, beginning about 8:00 p.m. Saturday EDT. It is light now on the eastern Med – about 9:00 a.m. I’m beginning to wonder why there is no live feed.
But the twitter page came back to life 21 minutes ago with this:
Which means it is probably a cached message from earlier. I don’t tweet, so ….?
the clock on my computer is showing 7 am in jerusalem.
on edit: tel aviv on the mediterranean is also 7 am.
don’t sweat it. it was snark.
but there’s always someone willing to seriously say any bizarro thing about the wars there.
it’s not always easy to tell the jokers from the lunatics.
As per the Jerusalem Post, guess who’s son is having his Bar Mitzva in Israel today?
Norman Finklestein?
ET, thanks for spotlighting the flotilla’s run and the latest crimes of the Israel’s apartheid government.
They were also filmed skipping out of a Blackhawk helicopter that had landed in the Golan Heights, which the USA does nor recognize as Israeli territory.
bows in the direction of the Bay.
witness gaza has gone as close to they can of live coverage.
the witness gaza site has position reports on google maps/earth, that show real progress either overnight or this morning. They are on a course that is fairly far north.
That’s a wierd message . . . could mean anything, and could be easily released by Israeli Likudnics.
Still standing by, thanks for being here for us.
something about that just seems obscene.
The live video stream is still down. It has been down now for about seven or eight hours. No information seems to be available as to why that has happened.
One thing I’ve observed about the organizers’ messaging, has been that they haven’t put a credible team together to deal with explaining the many inevitable breakdowns that occur when a complex project like this is enacted. This is too important a story to lose control of its message as the crux of the mission finally plays out.
So many otherwise progressive blogs that cover international issues simply have not touched this confrontation or its implications.
Hopefully, this is the stick, rather than the carrot:
The live stream is back up – looking over the bow of a passenger ship.
They certainly don’t appear to be under way.
Is this becoming chess?
and:
Thanks ET, must sleep here.
The morrow brings another new dawn on all of this.
the “live” feed appears to be putting up new audio content, with a perhaps live audio feed..
Ynet:
These people are incredibly brave.
I am very worried, though. The Israeli’s do not see themselves in the same light as the rest of the world see themselves. (Hopefully, you get what I mean). They have no qualms in making the most absurd justifications to kill people. And they know they’ll get away with it.
Very concerned for the folks on the floatilla.
Good morning.
Does anyone understand the Arabic speakers on the live stream? It’d be great to have a translation.
A professor of international law from Hamburg was just interviewed in the live stream from the ship. He said every country has absolute sovereignty 20 miles out from its coastline and that according to international law that includes Gaza even though it is not a country, since Israel has stated that it is not occupying Gaza. A country can extend that zone out militarily in an emergency if it feels like it will be attacked. He said that everyone in the world knows this is a humanitarian mission carrying things like medicine, books and prefab houses. In any case, it is illegal for Israel to enforce its will in the territorial waters of Gaza. Sorry, I didn’t catch his name. It appeared to me that he is one of the organizers of the mission.
I went to bed last night when it appeared the flotilla will not enter a zone of dispute until ether very late today or Monday, Cairo-Tel Aviv time. Starting my first cup of coffee right now. Beautiful sunny, Sunday morning in Wasilla, Alaska.
Thanks as ever for staying on top of this, ET. When you have a moment, I have a totally OT query for you; reachable at my screen name at mindspring dot calm. (I’d reach out through Facebook but refuse to join.)
Thanks,
Ralph
Here’s a dandy footnote:
From Free Gaza:
I didn’t realize until late last week that these two craft are American-flagged.
Gideon Levy has a thoughtful op-ed in the Sunday edition of Haaretz. Here’s part:
JPost update:
Paul McGeough is an Australian reporter on board the largest Turkish cruise vessel in the flotilla. Here’s from his report for the Monday Sydney Morning Herald:
Just posted at Not My Tribe:
From YNet:
From what was coming out of the flotilla on Saturday, they do not want the flotilla and IDF to have their encounter at night.
A new video, posted by Al Jazeera, with their reporter touring his ship.
Morning, ET, I’m about to partake in my first cup of java…! Tactically, nighttime is the optimum time…! 8-(
Ain’t those three subs some serious BS…! I pasted Ha’aretz’s cite on my Bibi thread…!
Hey, CT. I think the flotilla will stay well back from the coast overnight, and try to run in tomorrow morning. I do hope they have well-trained people on watch, and take care to check the bilges every 15 minutes. No doubt the Mossad has some agents or doubles among the passengers and/or crews.
I’m outside, gardening in our great weather, coming in to check the news on this every once in a while.
Thanks Edward, for blogging the flotilla. With the MSM having gone deaf, dumb and blind, your initiative in finding world sources is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
At 3:44 PM CST, on the Liveblog feed you provided above, an English speaker on board the Turkish liner reports the flotilla is eighty miles off Gaza, with Israeli destroyers menacing the flotilla (whatever that means), and interfering with the satellite telephones.
UPDATE:
On the live feed, passengers are all now wearing life jackets.
Will also cover this evening on FDL but folks may want to watch the livestream from the Turkish ship …
http://www.ihh.org.tr/filistin/en//
many speakers in turkish but they are interspersing with engligh updates
more:
— a tweet from Gaza.
Gaza was bombed last night and the night before, BTW.
no new tweets for 30 minutes…
The live video feed is going in and out, now with a lot of audio static…
GPS xmissions show the flotilla is still underway, headed toward Gaza.
A series of tweets from about an hour ago that I missed:
Position reports coming in on google maps here.
about 12,150 viewers to the live stream right now.
From Israel National News:
back to test pattern and no audio on the live blog
from Mondoweiss:
Live feed is back up – and Al Jazeera reporter said the captains are trying to back off to avoid a nighttime confrontation … but FreeGaza has not reported that, only issuing OK’s from the boats.
I’ll be posting on FDL front page pointing to this diary and embedding the live feed – let’s keep the visibility up overnight as events move ahead – remember Gaza is 8 hours ahead of the US east coast.
Thanks for figuring out how to embed the video live feed. I tried, but The Seminal wouldn’t recognize the code.
Urgent – from free gaza:
about 2 minutes ago LIVE FROM CHALLENGER 1 !! #FLOTILLA IDF IN RADIO CONTACT/INTERVENTION IMMINENT/SAILING ON TO GAZA MORE AS IT HAPPENS.
Siun has taken this up at fdl.
Thanks ET, for taking it all as far as you did.
