Beginning May 16th, I wrote a series of diaries here that sought to heighten awareness of the renewed and refreshed strident militance being shown by the Israeli government toward critics, and sought to bring more attention to the flotilla of boats and ships determined to lift the illegal siege of Gaza.
Saturday evening, as the flotilla was leaving the vicinity of Cyprus, I began a live blog post here. Sunday afternoon, as the flotilla neared the Levantine coast, Siun took over. Her firedoglake post ended up collecting information almost in real time, as the most serious attack by a foreign power in history on a collection of boats flagged by NATO members unfolded.
The blogs mondoweiss and Daily Kos also contained posts which sought to live blog the crime as it played out.
On May 16th, I noted that the freighter, MV Rachel Corrie, was leaving Irish waters, to join vessels already in the Mediterranean.
On May 20th, in light of Elvis Costello’s cancellation of an Israel concert tour, I speculated that it might be time to consider gathering artists together to create a 2010 version of the pivotal protest album from 1985, Sun City. That album helped galvanize resistance to the South African government policy of Apartheid.
On May 22, I noted the absence of mainstream media, especially in the USA, toward the gathering of vessels for the flotilla, and wondered how the approach of the the small fleet to the Gaza coast might be covered.
On May 25, I wrote about the assembly of boats, their problems, and the mounting evidence that the IDF would forcefully attempt to commandeer the vessels. I was concerned.
On Saturday May 29, I began the live blog, which was passed on to Siun yesterday, during her regular Sunday afternoon slot.
Others have also contributed diaries at firedoglake on this.
I’ve learned a lot from the process of writing about this. Foremost, perhaps, is that in spite of the stated IDF intention of isolating the vessels from being able to emit real time information during the attack, they were unsuccessful. As in the demonstrations in Iran in the wake of their farcical election last year, people managed to bypass jamming and blackouts, through workarounds or through discovery that government jamming had holes in it.
Twitter, through hundreds of cell phones on board the vessels, described the attacks in terse tweets from bloodstained decks. These tweets were passed back and forth between twitter sites throughout last night, as they aggregated incoming news from many early sources.
The Turkish video feed from the large cruise ship, where most casualties occurred will become iconic, even as the IDF releases their night vision videos that seek to purport the IDF was responding to a "lynch mob" as it opened fire on dozens of unarmed civilians, attempting to defend themselves from a brazen, illegal act in international waters.
Norman Finkelstein’s 2009 book about the 2008-2009 Gaza invasion is titled This Time We Went Too Far. It is an apt title. Many of us have experienced how friends or relatives finally stopped straddling the fence over how Israel conducts itself, as we and they witnessed the barbarity of the IDF assault on schools, hospitals, clinics, fire departments, bakeries, dairies and houses in the besieged Gaza enclave.
This time, the IDF went too far in ways that may be pivotal. Juan Cole, writing this morning, observes:
It is worth noting on Memorial Day that the Israeli attack deeply complicates the task of the US military in the region. It is a propaganda boon for Sunni extremists and Shiite activists such as Muqtada al-Sadr in Iraq, and for the Taliban in Afghanistan. It undermines the authority of the Egyptian and Jordanian governments, which have US-brokered peace treaties with Israel, treaties that are deeply unpopular with ordinary people in both countries. That some demonstrations are being held in front of US consulates and not just Israeli ones tells us who will get the blame for Netanyahu’s machismo.
Turkish-Israeli relations, already in an abysmal state, might never recover. Turkey has recalled its ambassador to Israel. The attack on several NATO-related vessels, in international waters, and without provocation, as noted above, is unprecedented. Turkey will be right to bring this before the NATO North Atlantic Council, which meets about once per week. The United Nations Security Council is meeting right now about the attack, with the Secretary General having already made a harsh statement.
As I noted in Siun’s live blog diary last night:
If the flotilla was actually moving away from the coast when boarded, after having responded to IDF enquiries regarding intent and course, this is a lost cause for the Israelis to defend. They have no claim that their response was appropriate.
Some, if not all, of the vessels were giving out position reports up to the boarding. The record of these is indelible. The Turks will surely bring this fact up to the North Atlantic Council this week, and it may have been brought up today at the UN Security Council.
A Daily Kos Diary, analyzing NATO responsibilities regarding Turkey in this matter, has hundreds of comments, Here is the key part of NATO doctrine that might pertain directly to actions after this attack:
Israel’s attack on the MV Blue Mamara, a Turkish vessel, means they just attacked a member of NATO. According to the NATO Charter, Article 5
The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.
If you think there is wiggle room in that definition, you would be mistaken. Article 6 is explicit about where attacks will trigger responses. Vessels in the Mediterranean Sea are mentioned explicitly.
The Israeli Prime Minister has cut short a North American trip that was to conclude with a White House meeting Tuesday. He’s had to return home to prepare for the Third Intifada, and to attempt to salvage diplomatic relations with a number of counties besides just Turkey.
Within the American progressive community Israel has always had and still has staunch supporters of every action by the IDF or Israeli government. But those numbers were severely diminished by this highly criminal attack. But, as a commenter at Mondoweiss observed this morning:
There are now 4 diaries on the rec list at Daily Kos condemning the Israeli piracy. Even during Cast Lead, this didn’t happen.
Other lefty blogs that generally avoid discussing Israel/Palestine issues at all will, should they continue to blind themselves in this matter, lose readers and influence.
A very important article recently appeared in the New York Review of Books. In The Failure of the American Jewish Establishment, by Peter Beinart, the author explains in detail how the large family size and emigration into Israel of ultra Orthodox inhabitants and their growing influence on internal Israeli politics will inevitably force young American Jews who are liberal to forsake support for the Zionist state and its brutal expansionist goals. The article has caused quite a stir, to say the least.
Israel has succeeded, in last night’s attack, in further isolating itself as an increasingly rogue nation. Some are even predicting an implosion there, similar to those of Apartheid South Africa, or of the Warsaw Pact communist governments.
Two things are certain though. Twitter, as a driver of non-MSM instant information has come of age.
And firedoglake, thanks to Siun and our commenting community, has once again led the way in live blogging a pivotal moment.

That is fascinating. Really. Yet, try as it appears they did, information kept on appearing rather rapidly.
You should read Beinart’s article, if you haven’t already.
Yes, thanks to Edward,Siun, and others for making this episode available to the world.

Part of the reason I love fdl so much is that this community has evolved as it has matured and grown. It was only three years ago that if one entered the term “AIPAC” into a comment here, one went into moderation, sometimes for hours.

The tide is turning against Israel. I just got an e-mail from Jewish Voices for Peace (I’m not Jewish) announcing demonstrations around the country against the actions yesterday. I’m waiting to see what J Street has to say. Checked AIPAC a few minutes ago and they have nothing on their site about this. I’m encouraged about the present willingness to speak out since it used to be absolutely taboo. Now it’s not and that’s a huge step. Thanks for all you do.

A fascinating comment at mondoweiss‘ diary on the legality or illegality of what the IDF did last night:

Huge demonstrations in Turkey, Pakistan and Iran today. Turkey is apparently and justifiably very angry. I believe our prez said that he was “disturbed.”

Finkelstein used to be fairly hard to watch, as he would get excited, passionate. He’s learned these past two years to be more reasoned. He almost reminds me of Spock now.
“He almost reminds me of Spock now.”; yep.
While the video Ctut posted does show the passengers assaulting the soldiers, doesn’t the same thing occur when the ‘somali pirates’ attempt to hijack a ship happen?
what I find disturbing is the lack of focus on the ships being in international waters; THAT truly makes the actions of the Israeli’s a war crime, period.
And, according to the satellite position reports and statements from crew on the bridges, the boats and ships were slowly cruising away from the coast when they were attacked.
So sad for the activist and their families. Another tragedy/massacre all while trying to bring humanitarian aid to the Palestinians in the Gaza
While ET and a few others have attempted to shed some light on the crimes being committed by the Israeli government at this site. FDL and quite a few other so called progressive blogs have issues that seem to be off limits to the heavy hitting bloggers at this site. Really no different than our MSM.
Good to hear that Daily Kos has some truthful threads going on. Because quite the I/P clog over there for years. Or personal attacks if you try to write about this issue.
Wonder if Keith, Rachel and the rest will cover it now that people have been murdered. Too bad they did not shed some light on the flotilla before. Israel might have hestitated first before they killed these peace activist.
So sad for the families

Hi ET – I’ve posted a little something that you might find interesting It’s Déjà Vu All Over Again | The Seminal
The U.S. official statement from today’s Security Council meeting at the U.N:
Thank you, Mr. President and thank you, Assistant Secretary-General Fernandez-Taranco.
The United States is deeply disturbed by the recent violence and regrets the tragic loss of life and injuries suffered among those involved in the incident last night aboard the Gaza-bound ships. We are working to ascertain the facts. We expect a credible and transparent investigation and strongly urge the Israeli government to investigate the incident fully.
As I stated in the Chamber in December 2008, when we were confronted by a similar situation, mechanisms exist for the transfer of humanitarian assistance to Gaza by member states and groups that want to do so. These non-provocative and non-confrontational mechanisms should be the ones used for the benefit of all those in Gaza. Direct delivery by sea is neither appropriate nor responsible, and certainly not effective, under the circumstances.
The United States remains deeply concerned by the suffering of civilians in Gaza, and the deterioration of the situation there, including the humanitarian and human rights situation. We continue to believe the situation is unsustainable and is not in the interests of any of those concerned. We will continue to engage the Israelis on a daily basis to expand the scope and type of goods allowed into Gaza to address the full range of the population’s humanitarian and recovery needs. Hamas’ interference with international assistance shipments and the work of nongovernmental organizations complicates efforts in Gaza. Its continued arms smuggling and commitment to terrorism undermines security and prosperity for Palestinians and Israelis alike.
We will continue to work closely with the Government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority, along with international NGOs and the UN, to provide adequate access for humanitarian goods, including reconstruction materials, through the border crossings, while bearing in mind the Government of Israel’s legitimate security concerns.
Ultimately, this incident underscores the need to move ahead quickly with negotiations that can lead to a comprehensive peace in the region. The only viable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is an agreement, negotiated between the parties, that ends the occupation that began in 1967 and fulfills the aspirations of both parties for independent homelands through two states for two peoples, Israel and an independent, contiguous, and viable state of Palestine, living side by side in peace and security. We call again on our international partners – both inside and outside this Council – to promote an atmosphere of cooperation between the parties and throughout the entire region.
Thank you, Mr. President.
“Hamas’ interference with international assistance shipments and the work of nongovernmental organizations complicates efforts in Gaza. Its continued arms smuggling and commitment to terrorism undermines security and prosperity for Palestinians and Israelis alike.” ; Mr. Wolff, you are full of shit.
which reminds me of something I thought of a couple of weeks ago; even if Obama didn’t have a Kenyan father, he would still be the same ‘color’ because he is so full of shit.
Well, so, Israel will be investigating itslf again?
Sheesh. Can these jokers be any more disingenuous?
Why are the accused always investagatiing themselves?
What kind of crazy bullshit is this?
Everybody knows Israel will laugh in our face. Say they did an
investigation and did nothing wrong. They have a right to defend themselves. That they were provoked, blah, blah, blah.
I mean come on!
Edward – thanks again for all your great work and for providing so much good info last night. We’ll have another post later today as well on the fp – FDL will not drop this story.
Thanks to you both for your great work here.
As many as nine Americans may have been aboard the Gaza relief flotilla attacked by the Israeli military, and are now being held by Israeli authorities, a State Department official said Monday.
The official, who had no details about their identities, conditions or whereabouts, said U.S. consular officials were expecting to interview the Americans on Tuesday.
http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/meast/05/31/gaza.flotilla.us.citizens/
De-briefing is more like it.
AIPAC wrote this one a bit heavy handed under the circumstances.
Not that it matters.
The US has become like the SNL character
Jon Lovitts used to play called “The Liar”.
All bullshit, all the time, whatever works.
Front page post right there can we get the U.S Liberty survivor’s family to talk?
When wil our diplomat in Israel visit the Americans? Its curious that our diplomats have not visited yet.
They will be visiting the illegally seized Americans, forcibly held against their will on foreign soil on Tuesday.
Ian Welsh has a thoughtful post up on this:
Holy Sweet Lord, Turkey has announced they will send another flotilla to Gaza—escorted by the Turkish Navy!
In the comments, Ian observes:

I truly wouldn’t want to be the US consular aide to have to talk to Col. Wright…! Whooo-ieee…! ;-)
From a link at the end of your link was this little gem:
Now that really, really scares the living crap out of me. I have long been afraid of a civil war in Turkey between the islamists and secularists. Erdogan is not on the side of goodness and light in that scenario. He may stand up to Israel, and there is value in that, but if he causes the destruction of Turkey as we know it, will it be worth it just to poke Israel in the eye?
BTW, thanks again to ET and Siun for liveblogging this. The revolution will be liveblogged at the Lake.
I’m sorry, but it appears to me the Israelis have been poking the Turks in the eye again and again, for the past nine months or so, if not longer.
That being said, I find Erdogan to be a very capable politician, who probably understands this dilemma as you are couching it, far better than you or I might.
And Mark from Ireland and CT have been contributing.
Danke Schoen, ET…! ;-)
Yeah, as I recall Erdogan got elected as mayor if Istanbul because he could get the garbage collected in his home district of Beyoglu. So yeah, he’s a good politician. So is Obama. ‘Nuff said on that.
The important issue is all the poking at Israel, though surely popular with regular Turks, could ultimately lead to the demise of secularism in Turkey. That is unfortunately what Erdogan and his ilk want. That is what a lot of Turks most fear. It would be a bloodbath.
Fake fake fake! Right at the beginning of that piece of hasbara, the ‘demonstrators’ were kind enough to hold the rope tight so the actor could get down without falling. Same assistance was given to the second actor. Clicks happen as the tape is edited and the same actors are shown descending the rope. It was pitch black when the attack on the flotilla happened. Not so in this poorly thrown together video. The IDF made and posted this video. At the beginning the caption says “Go down, go down, very good”, “Slow down a bit”. Seeing as how they weren’t directing a porno movie, they obviously were directing the actors to slow down the action. (YouTube does not have the captions) At 1:02, the commandos who were being beaten all of a sudden appear in a group at the right. At 1:23, the boat quits its slow rocking just in time for filming the metal pole action scene…convenient that. The commando at 1:23 is holding what is likely a IDF issued knife and pepper spray(Jenix).
****************
“Video taken by IDF naval boat shows the passengers of the Mavi Marmara, one of the ships in the ‘Free Gaza’ Flotilla, violently attacking IDF soldiers who were trying to board the ship after having sent repeated requests for the boat to change course.
Large groups of passengers surrounded soldiers and beat them with metal poles and chairs, and threw one soldier over the side of the ship. Some passengers grabbed pistols from the IDF soldiers and opened fire. As a result of the attacks, seven IDF soldiers were injured, and nine of the passengers were killed.
The ‘Free Gaza’ Flotilla had publicly insisted on their non-violent intentions, however their violent attack on the IDF soldiers was clearly premeditated. They had knives, metal rods, firebombs and other items ready to use.”

Thanks to CT and MarkfromIreland as well!
But, but, BB… Those were the fortunate ones that were promptly shown the various deck levels, and, even escorted to the emergency egress exits…! ;-)
Where do these people get their courage? And our government vilifies them before the world?
And Ann Wright being held prisoner by the Israelis? And the government response is…is there a government response? Is there a government?
Ann Wright and Elizabeth Warren so remind me of each other. They should hold the presidency of the United States jointly.
Imagine…actually having a president.
God speed the MV Rachel Corrie.
Thanks EdwardTeller and Siun for all the hard work and many hours. Much appreciated. And echoing michaelfishman’s prayer for the MV Rachel Corrie: Godspeed and safe journey! May the world watch carefully over its fate.
Amen…!
Thanks to ET, Siun, CTuttle and others here who are serving as my personal news aggregators on this ongoing horror show. And we would do well to remember that Gaza was a horror show long before “Cast Lead,” the election of Hamas, the massacres of the mid-oughts (remember the beach shelling?), the murder of Rachel Corrie, or even the second intifada. Weeks before 9-11, Chris Hedges highlighted the Gazans’ plight in a wrenching article in Harper’s worth digging up.
I agree with ET about the welcome though too gradual shift in I/P discourse in the progressosphere. Progressive media, we should note, have had many moments of merit prior to the emergence of blogs, as witness Harper’s or The Nation, at least prior to the death of Edward Said, and of course Democracy Now!, which has been around since 1996 though only televised in more recent years. And the media critism by FAIR, which predates not just blogs but the Web.
I’m still dumbstruck at the current massacre; I expected at worst that people would, as before, be roughed up and have their means of chronicling the roughing-up confiscated and destroyed. I weep for the activists and their families and fear for the next wave en route.
This attack is a turning point, in ways we still can’t predict. But it will not be a turning point in transforming the bloodlessness of MSM discourse, where the horror will be portrayed as a blow to ever-well-meaning US “peace” initiatives. In the pages of the NYT, or in the benzodiazepinoid delivery of PBS Newshour hosts, slaughter is never simply slaughter if perpetrated by the United States or Israel. It is for them, at worst, a policy problem. And of course, as Hugh notes above, humanitarian volunteers are forever “pro-Palestinian.”
It was this way during the US terrorist proxy wars in Latin America in the 1980s. As public support weakened, media discourse shifted toward questions, not of whether US-instigated terror was wrong, but whether it was tactically advisable toward achieving aims that were never themselves questioned.
My fear now is that Israel is so much in the tank with all of the rest of the world except the US government and media that it will step up its hostilities toward the overhyped bogeyman of Iran. If it chooses that course, the murder of the humanitarian activists may go down in history as this era’s corollary to the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand.
Excellent point…! Iran could be Israel’s ‘Wag the Dog’ moment to divert attention away from Gaza and the Palestinian Apartheid…! 8-(
For those who aren’t familiar with Sun City, Time magazine put it on their list of top ten protest songs. Video and a brief description at the link.
Right. The talking-points-talking-heads are going to fall right in line with the coward in chief.
As they had every right to do. Maybe this incident can serve as a paradigm for people to better understand the larger issue of who truly has the legal right to resist and defend: those who break in and steal or those whose homes are being broken into.
I would hope I would have been as courageous as those people on those boats.
EdwardTeller,
Thank you for all your coverage on this. I have been following everything here at FDL. This IS a pivotal history.
I hope more humanitarian vessels continue to deliver aid.
I hope the US will “man up” and face Israel and be ready for any blackmail information/political manipulation that gets released IRT 9-11 or anything else for that matter.
In the face of this moment in history, nothing matters but to hold Israel accountable.
Thank you to you, Siun, CTuttle, EW, Leen and others who have been addressing this and related concerns.
The US needs to withdraw it’s diplomats.
ET and Siun,
Thank you both so very much for all of your extraoridnary work on this story.
Turkey is stupid to escort.
The effectiveness on international policy was the fact that the flotilla was a peaceful act of humanitarian aid not tied to a government or large NGO.
Turkey just blew it and has now made it look like a set-up. Simply stupid. Let the peace protesters continue in the same fashion, peaceful and independent.
Turkey needs to back off. Those who have signed up on this knew the risk. That is what gives the humanitarian effort the “force” the “authority” to change ME history for the good.
Turkey Military escort destroys that power of peaceful protest and makes the aid political.
Huge disappointment to learn that. Turkey needs to back off the flotilla.
Allow the virtue of the civic humanitarian efforts be the change. The risk by citizens for humanitarian good is the best strategy at this point.
Any surprise that Obama stands with Israel once again? Vote this pathetic Nobel Laureate the fuck out of office in 2012. http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2010/06/official-us-will-stand-with-israel.html
From NATO:
Amazingly unwise comment. What a failing talking mouth. A comment like that is simply unacceptable.
Obviously Israel has some “goods” on the US for something like this to end up in print.
Exactly.
Turkey, specifically the current govt of Turkey, is politicizing humanitarian aid for its own purposes…specifically to rebuild Turkey as the seat of the caliphcy of old.
This is not a positive development.
What rubbish, is right.
Maybe if Israel didn’t ban life sustaining items and rebuilding materials in Gaza, handing the cargo over to Israel for distribution
might not be an unreasonable request.
But, under these circumstances, what’s the point when Israel will only confiscate every schoolbook, medicine, bag of cement, and whatever else they claim is a threat.
“might not be an unreasonable request.”
Would not have made it to the Gaza. Period
ET and Siun are doing a great job. But if you want more and more indepth go over to Mondoweiss, Informed Comment, George Galloway, Professor Norman Finkelsteins site. These sites have been pumping out critical information and a committed focus on these critical I/P issues for years now. FDL has gotten better on these issues. But the above mentioned sites are far more in depth and have had a long time commitment to shinging the spotlight on these issues. Mondoweiss is relatively new, but incredible.
Over at INformed Comment. Juan Cole has been going deep and wide on this issue. Which is often the case for Professor Cole. Lots over there…discussion debate has been informative and great as usual

Activists on Gaza aid flotilla talk of beatings, stun guns during raid by Israeli forces
By: Elena Becatoros,Kirsten Grieshaber, The Associated Press
1/06/2010 10:14 AM | Comments: 0
Print E–mail Share ThisReport Error BERLIN – Pro-Palestinian activists returning to Europe said Israeli commandos used stun guns on passengers and beat them during the deadly raid on an aid flotilla that was trying to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza. One woman said her aid ship “turned into a lake of blood.”
Five Germans, six Greeks and several others — among them a Turkish woman and her 1-year-old baby — were released Tuesday, but Israel barred access to hundreds of other activists seized during the raid Monday that killed at least nine people and wounded dozens.
Norman Paech, a former member of Germany’s Left Party who was aboard the Marmara, said the ship was surrounded by small Israeli assault boats about 4:30 a.m. Monday morning.
Concerning the US response, a commenter over at Unclaimed Territory cites this from Craig Murray:
My Speech in Whitehall Yesterday (last paragraph)
Cross posted from another thread. I only just discovered this one.
Agreed.
Except for the part about the US Government and media . . . they are fully in the tank for Israel’s Likudnics and have been forever.
And this instance with the flotilla seems to point ABOUT AS DIRECT AS ONE CAN PONT that Israel is WILLING and determined to rachet up its full charge headlong into a violent and large confrontation.
To what end anymore, even I can’t figure it out, because when that moment comes, they will be a primary target of everyone with nukes from Pakistan to India to Russia and China.
This is their race to planned oblivion. Why, I don’t know, but they can’t win this continued race of escalation. They can’t. It, like our own problems with fascism and wealth upwards to elites, will collapse under its own weight.
Could you post those links, please? Thanks.
