One of the leading experts on culture, politics and religion in the Muslim world is University of Michigan Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History, Juan Cole. Prof. Cole led off an article Sunday at his blog, Informed Comment, with a scathing takedown of late night entertainer Bill Maher’s latest anti-Muslim tirade. Although Maher directly attacked Muslim men (for being bad dating material), his lies about the status of women in most Muslim countries were this slimeball’s real message.
Here’s Ryan Witt’s description of Maher’s tirade:
Maher brought up the issue of women’s rights in the Muslim world while discussing the Egyptian Revolution. Maher argued that democracy cannot work in the Middle East until a “sexual revolution” accompanies the current political revolutions. Maher received some pushback from one of his panel members, who argued that women are also not always treated fairly in America. Maher argued that this was a “false equivalency” as Muslim women are often not even allowed to vote or drive in many countries in the Middle East. In addition, many women face a huge legal burden if they want to divorce their husband, whereas men have the option of divorcing their wives simply by saying literally saying they want a divorce.
Maher went even further in describing the treatment of Arab women by saying,
“Talk to women who’ve ever dated an Arab man. The results are not good.”
At certain points in the discussion Maher actually sounded like he could fit in quite well in a Fox News panel discussing the same issue. He argued against the cultural relativist argument to defend the practices of Arab men. Maher went on to describe a gruesome beheading of one Muslim woman by her husband.
Prof. Cole’s take on Maher’s lies is this:
Dear right wing blogosphere and also Bill Maher: You can’t generalize about women’s position in Muslim countries based on a reprehensible mob attack on CBS reporter Lara Logan. Generalizing about a whole group of people based on a single incident is called “bigotry.” It is also a logical fallacy (for wingnuts challenged by six syllables in a row, that means, ‘when your brain doesn’t work right’) known as the ‘Hasty Generalization.’ Nobody seems to note that allegedly helpless Egyptian women were the ones who saved Logan, or that Anderson Cooper was also attacked.
Some other examples of reporters or celebrities being assaulted by crowds are here and here. Wingnuts, and also Bill Maher, who do not immediately make generalizations on these bases about large groups of Westerners are wusses.
Note to Muslim-hater Bill Maher, who should know better: It is not true that women cannot vote in 20 Muslim countries, and please stop generalizing about 1.5 billion Muslims based on the 22 million people in Wahhabi Saudi Arabia, the only place where women cannot drive and where men can vote (in municipal elections) but women cannot. It would be like generalizing from the Amish in Pennsylvania to all people of Christian heritage and wondering what is with Christianity and its fascination with horses and buggies. [emphases added]
Here’s the Youtube clip of the entire episode of lies on Maher’s entertainment program:
And here’s an episode of his entertainment program from last June 10th. It was Maher’s response to public reaction to the cold-blooded murder of eight Turks and an American on the high seas by uniformed Israeli thugs. Note how Rachel Maddow blandly and uncomfortably sits through the entire routine:
“Let’s not shit a shitter,” eh, Bill? Lets see if you have the balls to invite Prof. Cole onto your entertainment program.

Aloha, ET…! Fascinating how an avowed atheist can comment on Religion…! 8-(
I’m not defending maher on this issue but just addressing the comment:
http://pewforum.org/Other-Beliefs-and-Practices/U-S-Religious-Knowledge-Survey.aspx
Interesting that Pew doesn’t account for Baha’is whom study all the monotheistic (Abrahamic) religions…! Also, I’ll add that Maher is apparently ill-informed on Islam…! Like others too…
Yes, it was interesting that muslims weren’t part of the Pew survey, especially given the large communities in CA,Detroit, etc.:

And I hope you’re not sending me a ‘dig’.
Atheists are presumptively disallowed from an opinion on religion? Really?
I didn’t watch Maher’s performance but men from Arab cultures frequently do seem to have retrograde views on women’s rights, and a friend who lived in Cairo said that Egyptian men would frequently openly make the sorts of disgusting remarks to his wife on the street to a degree far beyond what one might experience in any Western city that reinforce the chauvinist pig stereotype. Obviously not all men from Arab cultures disrespect women but a correlation appears to exist.
Maher is generally against organized religion and makes no bones about it which, even when I disagree, I find refreshing as in the US there is an overt, onerous and chilling pro-religious bias everywhere one looks.
I have to say that if I relied only on the stereotypes so often portrayed in American media, I would be in no better shape than Maher. He has no excuse, however, touting as he does some sort of “religulous”-based knowledge on what religion is and does.
Here are some Reel Bad Arabs.
“a friend who lived in Cairo said that Egyptian men would frequently openly make the sorts of disgusting remarks to his wife on the street to a degree far beyond what one might experience in any Western city that reinforce the chauvinist pig stereotype….”
— how third-hand of you. Come on up to Wasilla and I’ll take you to a Chamber of Commerce meeting, the barber shop, any bar on Saturday night after midnight, or fundamentalist men’s church group where you may see the same stuff on a regular basis.
Bill Maher is wrong and stupid. He had no idea what Tavis Smiley was saying. Plus, on many occasions Maher is very anti-women. I was thinking about it today and decided I would write them both an email.
At what juncture did I say they were ‘presumptively disallowed’…? Everybody is entitled to their own opinion…! It’s a shame that one so ill-informed chooses to cast hateful aspersions against said group with such a large megaphone…! 8-(
This proves Maher wrong. Domestic Violence Factoids in the US.

“— how third-hand of you. Come on up to Wasilla and I’ll take you to a Chamber of Commerce meeting, the barber shop, any bar on Saturday night after midnight, or fundamentalist men’s church group where you may see the same stuff on a regular basis.”
It is third hand, but it is also true. I’ve also known Saudi men who came to the US for university and exhibited similar attitudes.
That one would find similar attitudes in Alaska isn’t unsurprising. The stereotypical Arab chauvinist and the tundra chauvinist are in many ways alike. They both are essentially what I’ve come to recognize as what we call here “redneck”. They are both outwardly macho, both have hard-line conservative social views, both tend to be prone to overt and conspicuous displays of often fundamentalist religiosity, both tend to have been raised to have respect for “old fashioned values”- which here means intolerance towards any unconventional, liberal or modern ideas such as women’s equality or acceptance of sexual or racial minorities, both will be resolutely anti-intellectual will expect their children and wives to unquestioningly obey them or face physical punishment, will tend to be staunchly nationalistic, fond of firearms, hostile and disrespectful to immigrants and other cultures… etc. etc. etc. Everyone knows or has met people like this.
The “redneck” type isn’t confined to any particular race or culture and is actually common worldwide. From American ghettos to Cambodian jungle to rural Calabria to Brazil to Serbia to the South African veldt. Anywhere you mix uncosmopolitan unsophisticated, poorly educated, insular men with conservative fundi religion you will find the same thing.
It is not just the redneck types that women have to endure. Look the financial industry and the way they pay females.
…Anywhere you mix uncosmopolitan unsophisticated, poorly educated, insular men with conservative fundi religion you will find the same thing…
Exactly…! So why are you so fixated on Islam’s fundies…?
I have a problem: Most working-class white people agree with me when I tell them President Obama is a crook. The problem is they (white people) are sure Obama is going to take their stuff (entitlements) and give it to poor blacks (rerorations). Those of us who pay attention know that Obama is a crook who funnels money upwards to Wall Street. I agree with you guys, Maher is a bigot when it come to the human beings who dwell in the Middle East. Bill (in my opinion) is right about women in the Middle East are treated worse than women here. Yes, I understand we have a long way to go, but Islam can never find true Democracy unless all women are fully equal. Lastly, I think Mr. Stone was dead on: Maher, and Maddow are both AIPAC whores.
Maher hates all religious people. Easy for him. He is so self righteous he has no need of God. I think he sucks. But that’s just my opinion and he is just a comedian.
Obama is owned. He does what he is told to do by rich white men. His job is to steal from working people and give the money to rich white men. He sux.
I am a working class white guy and I am very familiar with the white guys you are talking about. They are ignorant and they think they are not. That’s a tough one to overcome. They grew up listening to Rush and Hannity.
AIPAC whores? Ain’t that the truth!
In speaking about the Lara Logan attack, Bill Maher unfavorably compared the attitudes of men in Arab countries (Mulisms) to American men, claiming that we treat women so much better in this country. My reaction was that Bill is completely out of touch with news around the country. The New York Times reported a big story just on February 15th about the prevalence of rape in the US military. See this link:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/16/us/16military.html?scp=1&sq=Rape%20in%20the%20US%20Military&st=cse
“A federal lawsuit filed Tuesday accuses the Department of Defense of allowing a military culture that fails to prevent rape and sexual assault, and of mishandling cases that were brought to its attention, thus violating the plaintiffs’ constitutional rights. The suit — brought by 2 men and 15 women, both veterans and active-duty service members — specifically claims that Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and his predecessor, Donald H. Rumsfeld, “ran institutions in which perpetrators were promoted and where military personnel openly mocked and flouted the modest Congressionally mandated institutional reforms.”
You only have to follow your local newspaper to find glaring examples of physical and sexual abuse of women. We live in such a large glass house, we shouldn’t be throwing any stones. And Bill Maher should get better informed about what’s going on in his own country.
‘Fascinating how an avowed atheist can comment on Religion’
If you will allow me to address your statement:
It’s really not that hard: One does a lot of readying of ‘holy’ books and commentary; looks at the world the way it really is; and then draws conclusions.
You might want to try it sometime.
But that’s just my opinion and he is just a comedian.
Yes, what you say it true. But it’s interesting how a bit of comedic lubrication allows otherwise unpalitable thoughts to more easily penetrate a mind closed to alternative ways of looking at the subject of cosmology.
But that’s just my opinion and who am I but a handful of dust.
Ever sat in a Greek diner and listened to the owner belittle and make openly sexual remarks to the women, Greek and American and whatever other variety happen to be unlucky enough to work there? Misogynists come in many flavors and no culture has a monopoly on them. Misanthropes are also well distributed throughout the ruling elites worldwide, our current president being one of them as he wages his illegal wars on an idea.
Yes, they are. One thousand percent AIPAC whores.
