Tuesday afternoon, I delivered the letter signed by many here at FDL, and by 27 Alaskans, to Alaska Sen. Mark Begich, requesting he join Rep. Dennis Kucinich in investigating the abusive treatment of U.S. Army PFC Bradley Manning at the brig of Marine Corps Base Quantico.
My longtime friend who runs Begich’s Wasilla office, Mary Kvalheim, immediately unstapled the three-page document, copied it and shoved it through the fax connecting her office with Mark’s DC HQ. I thanked her and left to prepare to fly to Seattle overnight. Before I left Wasilla, I also emailed MS Word copies of the letter to Begich’s Press Secretary, Julie Hasquet, to his Chief-of-Staff, David Ramseur, and to his military affairs legislative aide, Lindsay Kavanaugh.
When I got to SeaTac Airport, I checked my email. Here’s what Ramseur had written to me overnight:
Phil:
We got the letter and Senator Begich will have it today, if he doesn’t already. We’ll get you a response shortly.
Thanks – David
Though this is certainly good news, and a much more straightforward process than has been dealing with Mark’s Press Secretary, Julie Hasquet, we’ve yet to see how Mark will react. Sen. John Kerry promised constituents on February 21st to look into Manning’s treatment:
A person in the back of the room asked about the alleged torture and solitary confinement of Pfc. Bradley Manning, who is accused of leaking a vast amount of information on the war in Afghanistan through the Web-based government watchdog organization WikiLeaks. The question led to a brief chant of “Free Bradley Manning.” In response, Kerry promised, “I will join with John McCain and we will make sure it stops,” to huge cheers.
Kerry doesn’t appear to have given it much of a shot, though. Yet:
Massachusetts Senator John Kerry was asked about the situation, and offered some defense for what’s going on.“There are concerns about what is happening, but a strong argument is being made that they’re trying to preserve his safety, they don’t want him harming himself, and using his own clothing to hang himself, or do something like that,” said Kerry. “That’s happened in prison before. I think it is possible to protect him, I think, and there are some legitimate reasons to believe that that may be true also. But I think that a lot of people are now reviewing this very, very closely, people have weighed in, myself included, I think that analyses are being made. There was a big article in the newspapers today examining it. And I’m convinced that there will be real scrutiny with respect to that issue.”Massachusetts Senator John Kerry was asked about the situation, and offered some defense for what’s going on.

Minneapolis constituents of Sen. Amy Klobuchar have been unsuccessfully attempting to force their elected Senator to investigate Manning’s horrendous treatment:
Please find a way to reach out to any U.S. Representatives or Senators who have a responsibility toward the well-being of people serving in our military forces.
We need to keep up the pressure.

thank you ET
Yes, thanks ET. Keep turning up the heat.
Excellent !
I would parse Senator Kerry’s comment differently than you did. Look at the paragraph – after rather skeptically giving their reasons, he starts a sentence with “BUT”. Typically, “but” signals a shift of some kind.
That sentence is :
“But I think that a lot of people are now reviewing this very, very closely, people have weighed in, myself included, I think that analyses are being made.”
I think this sentence – in a low key way – is saying that he has spoken to the right people and they are reviewing the decision. Hopefully, they could correct or change it. What it sounds like to me is that he did question it and is awaiting their decision.
There are many ways to get things done. One is to make something a big enough issue that people in power might feel the need to change. Kucinich, alone of elected officials is going that route. If Bush were still in power, that might be Kerry’s best shot too. With Obama in power, it would seem that at least as a FIRST step, working quietly behind the scenes might be more effective and has the added benefit of not embarrassing the Obama administration.
At any rate, it says that he did raise the issue.
My rhetorical legerdemain handbook says genrally to ignore anything in a sentence following a “but”.
If Manning had murdered a couple of Pakistanis, we’d see Kerry spring into action.
As it is, the only effort he’s expending is in the double-speak where he tries to pretend he is doing something about it while doing absolutely nothing about it.
John Kerry is an utterly useless and pathetic tool, very much like the majority of Senators with (D) following their name.
John Kerry: Yale Skull&Bones; US Navy Vietnam Swift Boat commander/Special Ops; agent provocateur within Vietnam Veterans Against the War gaining info on antiwar movement which was becoming increasingly mainstream; Massachusetts Commonwealth Attorney responsible for imprisoning a member of the 5th Special Forces whose wife was murdered because the man knew about intelligence operations being run against US congressional leaders by US intel agencies within the borders of the US.
The same guy who allowed the Iran-Contra hearings to be torpedoed allowing Reagan to escape impeachment.
The same guy who rolled over on the theft of election 2004 in Ohio.
It will be most interesting to see if a very junior Senator like Begich is allowed to accomplish something in this regard, especially given the still-ambitious John Kerry’s complete wimpout on the topic.
Kerry wants to be the next Secretary of State, and he’s been told to STFU on Bradley Manning if he hopes to see that happen. I bet.
Has anybody seen or heard from Al Franken lately?
I hope that does not mean you are looking for him to do anything about this. remember he is the one who has anti-war protesters arrested outside his office and then tells his staff to testify against them. He is a number one warmonger and so therefore, does not give a rip about torture or our troops.
You’ll hear from Al when he’s seeking donations.
Exactly. If he said anything now he’d be three years early.
Are you talking about April of last year, when the protesters wouldn’t leave his office even though it was after hours (and even though he wasn’t even physically in his office at the time — he was talking to them via conference call)?
Kerry’s response reminds me of the letter I got back from Hillary Clinton after asking Bill to grant Leonard Peltier a pardon after God knows how many years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit.
“Yada, yada…and yada. FBI!”
Thank you stevo67… And really does anyone believe Begich ?
but we will see.
Yeah, it is my belief that he was set-up.
I didn’t realise he was still in jail.
Bummer
Your tinfoil hat is really on tight here!
Kerry was not in Special Ops in Vietnam – his role there is very well documented. As to being an “agent provocateur gaining info on the antiwar movement – you are beyond crazy. While Kerry openly rejected the far left elements of the anti-war movement, his speech before the Senate and the encampment of veterans he led was extremely successful for the antiwar movement. That Nixon people called him the only anti war activist they were concerned with – said in secret Nixon tapes – shows that he was exactly what he said he was.
As to the Contra hearings, HIS investigations were what showed that there was illegal arm and drug running. When everything became public with the downing of a plane – which proved many of the things that Kerry committee witnesses were saying – a joint committee of the House and Senate were set up. Senator Kerry, a freshman Senator was not included. It was for lying to Kerry that North and Abrahms were charged with perjury.
Had Reagan been impeached for the Contra part of Iran/Contra, it would have been Kerry’s willingness to risk his career on the investigation when no one else in Congress was willing to do so that would have been one reason it happened.
As to 2004, there is still not proof that Kerry could have used to prove that he actually won Ohio. The RFKjr analysis uses an estimate of votes that were lost due to the fact that there were 4 plus hour lines as Democratic strongholds were given far too few voting machines. The same team that told Gore to “unconcede”, told Kerry the numbers were not there. You can’t make a case on votes not cast – and any case had to be resolved by the end of December 2004. (ie The NH Democrats proved that the Republicans cheated by knocking out the Mancester GOTV in the 2002 election and people went to jail – it did not lead to Sununu being asked to immediately leave or have a new special election with Shaheen, who did defeat him in 2008. Not to mention, it was 2006 before the case was resolved.)
It does???
Let’s see.
I intended to go to the store, but I stayed home instead.
or
The winner appeared to be Joe, but at the very end Sam pulled ahead and crossed the finish line.
or
I wanted to vote, but I was not yet 18 on election day.
Now, these require at most 4th grade comprehension. Following your handbook’s advice, how would you have answered these standard comprehension questions?
The person:
a) went to the store
b) stayed home
c) can’t tell what he did
(the other two are obvious).
Thanks for clearing that up, Karenc.
Thanks, ET, for doing this. My fingers are crossed and I’m attempting to remain optimistic for Private Manning. It’s worth the effort, but I remain skeptical, esp of Kerry (more’s the pity).
Here’s hoping! All the best to Manning; makes me sad/mad/upset just to consider what’s happening in MY name.
I’m down in the Seattle area, for James L. Acord’s memorial service, visiting Mom, and – today – visiting Chief Seattle’s grave.
Kerry will do nothing except blather in his very aristocratic voice. “Reporting for duty” indeed. blegh
