Back in 2007, an Israeli TV program ran the segment posted below. The program, Toffee VeHa-Gorilla, features a scantily clad young woman, a monkey, a big red couch with yellow pillows, a huge pink washing machine, and other props.
There isn’t much on the web about the program in English, perhaps deservedly so. Over the past two days, though, this video, in which the girl crucifies her monkey for contemplating “assimilating” himself into Christianity, is getting noticed.
The video was posted onto Youtube in September, 2010, but from the comments at its place there, it appears to have only started getting a lot of hits this past week. Now it is being posted at several sites, including some in Israel.
My prediction is that now that this unnerving segment appears to be going viral, it will be pulled down.
Prepare to be disturbed:
Update – Sunday: More information on this program.
There is indeed a paucity of information on Toffee VeHa-Gorilla in English. What I’ve been able to discern so far past what’s in the post above, has been provided by Shmuel at Mondoweiss, where the video was linked to earlier. Here’s Shmuel:
I haven’t come across anything about the show (טופי והגורילה – “Toffee and the Gorilla”) in English, but the “concept” is pretty clear from the Hebrew interview I linked to above, and the sketches available online (on youtube and elsewhere – you can cut and paste the Hebrew טופי והגורילה in the search bar).
It’s a parody of some of the shows on Israeli state Educational TV, especially in the ’60s and ’70s (some of the sketches are even in black and white, for added effect). The messages are unashamedly racist (against Arabs, Mizrahim, Christians, etc.), chauvinist and violent, holding up a mirror to Israeli society as it were (albeit from a safe distance – placing such attitudes somewhere in the past). The show’s creator describes its political orientation as “socialist-pacifist”.
The crucifixion sketch is so over the top that it could only be satire, although its utter crudeness is more indicative of a lack of self-awareness than of a desire to provoke in order to bring home an ugly truth.
Earlier at Mondoweiss, Shmuel wrote:
The programme is produced and broadcast by the privately-owned Bip channel, not state-run Educational TV. The Ed TV symbol, music and “feel” is part of the programme’s shtick – voice of the brainwashing, racist, consumerist, sexist (hence the girl in the bikini), warmongering establishment. Poor taste, blood, and provocations of all kinds are also part of the shtick.
Here’s an interview (Hebrew) with the programme’s creator –http://www.mouse.co.il/CM.articles_item,789,209,18794,.aspx – who says he was inspired by Team America and Southpark. [emphasis added]
Here’s the google search result for טופי והגורילה
That being said, to categorize the video, as one commenter did below, as having “the smell of the notorious “Protocols of the Elders of Zion” is highly inaccurate. Rather, it is a disturbing example of how racial and religious stereotypes in an increasingly fractured and dysfunctional society have very awkwardly found themselves projected through inept (at best) social satire.

I’ve mailed a group of people to download it. So that it doesn’t just vanish.
This isn’t surprising. Not even slightly. The thing about Zionists is that they’re equal opportunity haters.

This is one of the most disgusting things I have ever seen. Especially with a half-naked woman. Are there no boundaries today? Even people who are not Christians should be appalled at this.
Thanks, mfi, for using your resources. As an Israeli friend observed upon seeing this today, “We’re not all like this.”
religious nuttiness is ecumenical, though.
Filled with total lies about who and what Jesus was. Jesus was a Jew preaching to fellow Jews, nor is there any proof to show he broke Mosaic dietary restrictions, much less encouraged others to do it. That came in later centuries, after Paul (formerly Saul of Tarsus) converted and became a high ranking member of the early church.
I posted this at my blog too. A commenter observed:
I replied:
This is on a par with Terry Jones crusade to burn Korans…! 8-(
I would suspect it was Ashkenazis that produced this nauseating clip…! 8-(
Oh Snap…! ;-)

Damnit it man it’s going to take me weeks to decontaminate that image from my brain – think of this as MFI’s revenge …
He made a proposition which
I found rather sweet
And handed me a hammer and some nails
Actually, my comment was too quickly made. It should have read:
Sorry, Mark. Your Saturday chorale posts do the opposite for me.
Hope this erases the image.
Which reminds me Philip (and with apologies for O/T and blogyouknowwhating) I think you might enjoy my latest posting here at the lake:

Ah – we crossed :-)
I did. Very much. As you were writing this, I was already sort of replying above.
Oh gorgeous – thank you.

What a lovely childrens show “Half naked slut tells the children of israel that she’ll murder them if they try to convert.”
Good to see somebody saw the upside of the program.
Gotta get the kids filled with a genocidal bloodlust when they’re young so they stay hooked.
It actually was Saul/Paul who created xtianity; see “Paul: Mind of the apostle by A.N.Wilson.
It truly is a terrible hate-filled video. Are you absolutely certain it’s not a forgery?
Yes. Some of her other programs have been posted on youtube, but as I wrote, “There isn’t much on the web about the program in English, perhaps deservedly so.”
I still question the context. It appears to be a cable access like show. Rather strange that one can only find links to youtube metacafe and political forums.
Without any confirmation of what it really is (I dont speak the language so I do not know if its been honestly translated) and where it was shown. I cannot just start getting mad or whatever the point of posting this was.
Besides it was from 4 rears ago hardly new at all. So the relevancy is lacking anything to do with reality. Someone could simply fake it easily. As a skeptic bells are ringing.
But at any rate its atypical religious bullshit. Doesnt matter what religion there are always people in it that cant tolerate other religions.
My skeptic bells rang too, until I confirmed that the program is real through friends who have seen it.
Reality. Hardly old at all – Saturday:
More recent stuff, contextual too:
Statement by Dr. Ghassan Khatib, Director of the Palestinian Government
Media Center and official spokesperson of the Palestinian National
Authority:
But what was it shown on?
I have no doubt that Israel is doing many horrid things. No Theological Society can be free. But I am still skeptical of something that eludes my research techniques.
If the only public showing as of right now is by opponents of Israel no matter how much i agree with the assertions of bigotry, I can give faith in what I cannot confirm. Call it a character flaw if you must. But I do not do well with faith.
So forgive me for not blindly taking your word for it. Nothing personal. I am sure that you are an honest person, but you are just a stranger to me. Trust is something that is earned through long friendships. No sarcasm in any of that even if it may sound like it.
“I cannot give faith in what I cannot confirm”not can…
FWIW, ET has been frequenting the Lake for a far longer time than you and has built up exactly the level of trust that you purport to need with most long time readers.
Ed, Why are you certain? I noticed some of the other videos, which are not as bad as this one. But how do you know this aired? And which station broadcast it? Also what is the status of that station in the Israeli TV universe? That is I find this missing context, so I can’t tell who’s responsible for this video? Is it the Israeli of the KKK or the American Nazis?
ET, I agree with you here. Israel is doing many reprehensible things well worth calling attention, but this piece has the smell of the notorious “Protocols of the Elders of Zion.”
Hey, E.T., heard any good blood libel jokes lately? If anyone would know, I thought it would be you.
Happy Easter!
I think I will give the video a pass, Edward. From what others have said it’s a tough image to erase.
Even the still of the Israeli teevee Subaru ad hitting the Palestinian kids, one flipped through the air hasn’t faded yet.
I have no desire to watch this, but is this like one of the things that our own pam geller or michelle malkin would do?
appreciated.
It is more like if South Park made a huge joke about gas ovens and Jews during Purim. Such a program would probably not be acceptable in the USA. This program continues on, though.
If watching a puppet-monkey being mock-nailed to a piece of wood really disturbs you, I would suggest that you’re terribly sheltered — at the very least you have micron-thick skin. This clearly isn’t a tasteful video but if you can visit Google you can watch videos of ACTUAL torture and murder.
This was ham-fisted “satire” at best, I agree, but why is it something to be offended about anymore than one would be offended by, say, the Westboro lot? This show’s purpose was to make fun of zealotry and right-wing inanity — to expose it for its innate odiousness by making it manifest in jest — and here you are spouting the sort of reactionary fluff that THOROUGHLY nutty right-wingers will spout! A cursory Google search produces numerous instances of GOP religious apologists spouting fire and brimstone over this, only their posts also end with some caveat about disagreeing with the video but supporting Israel in every conceivable situation. So I suppose your piece is better in that regard.
I just don’t know that religion deserves not to be mocked, even as crudely as this. Two crazed Catholic nutters smashed that silly “Piss Christ” photograph recently when it was on display in France, along with several other exhibits they disliked. Yeah… Christian tolerance…
*shrug* I just don’t know, Mr Teller. I find it hard to believe that one should be overly sensitive to the feelings of people who symbolize their belief with an ancient instrument of torture and execution. I happen to be appalled at many Christian beliefs which, oddly enough, are far more disturbing than videos of puppet-masochism. All the creepy talk of cleansing sacrificial bloodshed and demands of worship and about 85% of the Old Testament…
The article says the Mocking Jesus video originated in 2007. My research shows it appearing and being talked about on the internet as early as 2005. http://wincoast.com/forum/showthread.php?102761-Easter-in-the-quot-Holy-Land-quot&p=1658359 http://wincoast.com/forum/showthread.php?102761-Easter-in-the-quot-Holy-Land-quot&p=1658359
Many of the posts going around now speak of it as if it just appeared this Easter to taunt the Christian population.
Thanks to Shmuel for his research about where this video comes from, which is given at Mondoweiss. At its best, as Shmuel points out, the Toffee video is satire gone horribly, stupidly awry. But what is also troubling is the alacrity with which this video was seized upon by various sources, including the Salem Post, and characterized as a message from the State of Israel with no journalistic due diligence about its origins.
