In an announcement many will find stunning, the Obama administration has upped its threat level to Americans participating in the 2011 Gaza relief flotilla:
The U.S. State Department said Friday that attempts to break the blockade are “irresponsible and provocative” and that Israel has well-established means of delivering assistance to the Palestinian residents of Gaza. It noted that the territory is run by the militant Hamas group, a U.S. designated foreign terrorist organization, and that Americans providing support to it are subject to fines and jail.
The Americans “providing support” include:
Hedi Epstein, an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor
Alice Walker, beloved poet, writer and Pulitzer Prize winner
Ray McGovern, former CIA intelligence expert and staff member for seven presidents
Col. Ann Wright, 1997 recipient of the U.S. State Department’s Award for Heroism
Medea Benjamin, perhaps America’s most prominent peace activist
and over 30 other Americans.
Here’s a link to the U.S. State Department’s June 22nd warning in its entirety. Here is the pertinent part of the Wednesday announcement regarding flotilla participants:
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) strictly controls the crossing points between Israel and the Gaza Strip. The security environment within Gaza, including its border with Egypt and its seacoast, is dangerous and volatile. U.S. citizens are advised against traveling to Gaza by any means, including via sea. Previous attempts to enter Gaza by sea have been stopped by Israeli naval vessels and resulted in the injury, death, arrest, and deportation of U.S. citizens. U.S. citizens participating in any effort to reach Gaza by sea should understand that they may face arrest, prosecution, and deportation by the Government of Israel. The Government of Israel has announced its intention to seek ten-year travel bans to Israel for anyone participating in an attempt to enter Gaza by sea. On May 31, 2010, nine people were killed, including one U.S. citizen, in such an attempt. The U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv and the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem are not able to provide consular assistance in Gaza or on the high seas or coastal waters.
From December 27, 2008, through January 17, 2009, Israel conducted a military operation in Gaza. Israel and Hamas, a State Department-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization that violently seized power in Gaza in June 2007, declared separate truces to end the fighting. Small clashes continue to occur along the boundary of the Gaza Strip. Rockets and mortars are still fired into Israel from Gaza, and Israel continues to conduct military operations inside Gaza, including airstrikes. Israel has also declared an exclusion zone inside Gaza along its boundary with Israel and has taken lethal measures against individuals who enter it.
The State Department web site has no link to the Friday announcement yet. I’ll post it when it appears.
Updated – Saturday early morning:
On facebook, Max Blumenthal has linked to an article by his colleague Joseph Dana. Dana reports the Greeks are responding to safety complaints made against three of the 10 boats scheduled to leave Greek waters toward Gaza. The MV Audacity of Hope is one of the three:
Early this morning, I discovered that a ‘private compliant’ had been filed against the US boat to Gaza. The compliant, it is still unclear who filed it, stated that the US boat to Gaza is not ’sea worthy’ and requires a detailed inspection. The harbor master where the boat is in port has declared that until the compliant is resolved the boat is not permitted to leave. Currently, lawyers representing the US boat are looking into the origins of the compliant and weather it was filed as a result of Israeli economic or diplomatic pressure on the Greek government. The boat is US flagged and registered in the United States.
10 ships are expected to sail as part of the Gaza aid flotilla. Currently three ships, including the US boat, have had complaints levied against them. US boat organizers believe that Greece will attempt to delay the ships indefinitely by using a serious of bureaucratic measures such as endless safety checks and cargo inspections. Despite the setbacks, organizers are continuing with their nonviolence and safety training. They are hopeful that the Greek government will allow the ships to sail next week as initially planned.
Updated – Saturday Afternoon:
ATHENS – A group suspected of being linked with the Israeli foreign intelligence agency the Mossad was reported to have tried to thwart the sailing of a Greek ship slated to join the Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla II due to set sail sometime next week.
The elements tried to sabotage the ship’s engine, but a crew discovered the men while checking the equipment, Quds Press said, quoting sources from the flotilla’s organizing body, on Saturday. The sources added that the men fled the scene.
Since the incident, participants have been taking turns watching guard in anticipation of another shot at foiling the mission to deliver much needed humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The flotilla, which will include some 15 ships and hundreds of notable passengers, has insisted on heading for the Strip despite Israel’s open threats to use military force to stop the ships short before landing at the said destination.

Hope macht frei?
Ok umm? Did Obama start reading Richard Nixon’s biography now, or G Edgar Hoover’s?
Funny O is not going after Hare Groups like the Klan or the Neo Nazi’s I guess Peace Groups and Eco terrorists get all his attention.
Just how many people have died as a result of Peace Groups or Eco Terror?
This order is from the State Dept I presume they handle foreign affairs that mean Hilary.
I suspect Hilary want to challenge O in the Dem Primary after she quits. Lots of Hilary supporters saying Hilary would never have been as bad as O.
Never mind Hilary ran on what O lied about not supporting. I think Hilary is trying to stop Peace Groups to help Israel and collect cash from Israel.
I too suspect this is partly about $$$ for 2012. OTOH, it fits with the pattern of Obama stepping up actions against people supporting activities that have even tenuous links to Hamas.
The irony in this is that the Zionists need Hamas as a punching bag, whereas people like Epstein, Walker and me (I’ve raised money for public infrastructure in Gaza) would love to see Hamas go the fuck away forever.
Just when I think Obama has gone as far as he can go in sucking up to the Israeli lobby AIPAC, he finds a way to go even farther.
Thank God for the courage and integrity of Hedy Epstein and the rest of the human rights activists on the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza.
I’m grateful too for the integrity of the tiny minority of Israelis who work for justice for the Palestinians.
Here’s a great explanation of Israel’s past, and a hopeful future, by Miko Peled, whose grandfather, Dr. Avraham Katsnelson, was a signer of the Israeli Declaration of Independence, and whose father, Matti Peled, was a young officer in the war of 1948 and a general in the war of 1967 when Israel conquered the West Bank, Gaza, Golan Heights and Sinai:

…Israel has well-established means of delivering assistance to the Palestinian residents of Gaza.
They just choose not to deliver that humane assistance…! 8-(
Amen to that, ET…!

Here’s a question:
If the Obama administration considers these Americans to be “providing support to a U.S. designated foreign terrorist organization,” does that mean that all those who have donated to the US Boat to Gaza campaign are in that same category?
Does that mean that if we live blog the boat and flotilla, and communicate back and forth between fdl and the American participants via twitter or texting in real time, urging them on toward a confrontation with the IDF, that fdl could be shut down?
Hmmmmmmm….
Not a direct hit, but…. #3 looks promising.
Is this the first time they’ve admitted that Furkan Dorgan was an American?
What about the individual writers of all those letters that they’re delivering to Gaza…? ;-)
Write a letter to a Gazan – get the book thrown back atcha.
His citizenship seems to come and go quite whimsically. The New York Times, as far as I’ve been able to track, has yet to write an article in which they call Dogan an American.
In an anecdotal way, it seems that the more belligerent israel acts toward the rest of the world, the more strongly we are supposed to support them. The latest seems to be that the US congress must swear allegience to israel over the US. It seems that no matter what, the pols are going to go with the banksters, other elites, and israel.
ET, did you see this new Jason Ditz bombshell…?
Report: Palestinians May Abandon Demand for Settlement Freeze…
It’s bait. They know the Israelis will reject that, just like they rejected similar conciliatory “offers” re East Jerusalem, as shown in the “Palestine Papers.”
Thanks ET, I truly hope this blows up polling wise for O’s re-erection.
Highly rcc’d.
Such hate, and support for hate, is just unAmerican.
Irony, be still yer heart.
LeSigh.
I hope this blows up all to hades in this Admin’s and country’s face.
Grr.
Bless ‘em one and all . . . Lesigh.
But, the Palestine Papers also prove that Abbas would actually stoop that low…! 8-(
I hope it does not blow up. I’m concerned that the State Department statements will be seen by the IDF as a signal to be even stupider than they were last year, hoping that by being cruel they will end the idea of more flotillas.
That reminds me: Did you see this article on the Bronfman/Adelson part-hasbara, part-Quiverfull operation called Birthright Israel?
http://www.thenation.com/article/161460/romance-birthright-israel
Parts of it reminded me forcibly of Schickelgruber’s sending young blond Aryan women to the Olympic Village in Munich to get impregnated by the visiting athletes. (Though somehow I doubt any visited Jesse Owens.)
While the Federal Government under Obama directly threatens humanitarian aid workers, we all live under its threat of arrest, and extraordinary rendition, torture and death.
Bill Maher said that, in America, we can at least, still criticize the government.
That is not nearly as true as it once was. Patriot Act.
Just when I thought I couldn’t hate the country I had the misfortune of being born in any more than I do right now, this happens
I hate my country
When we collapse I hope canada absorbs New York
Or could canada just roll tanks over the border?
We’ll surrender without a fight if it means we can live the canadian lifestyle
I have contributed to ANERA, which supports medical and humanitarian aid to the people of GAZA. Does that make me a supporter of terrorism?
I have never been so disgusted with our government which is obviously in support of state terrorism committed by Israel.
No question about it: Obama is Netanyahu’s poodle, and that goes for the entire Congress. I suspect Obama will eventually follow Bush’s pattern and wait until the past year of his second term to speak out for Palestinian rights and statehood, perhaps in another useless Annapolis conference.
ET lets look at other Americans who have provided material support to terrorists and or war crimes.
Hal under Dick Cheney set up a shell company to do business with Iran despite them being supporters of terror. Dick never went to trial and in fact became VP.
Every member of Congress who has taken Israel lobbyist money while Israel is starving Palestinians thats why we need the peace fleet to go to Israel in the first place has taken cash to starve Civilians. Thats a war crime.
A few paragraphs from Dana’s article:
Short answer – yes.
#3 is what they have been using to prosecute the Quakers for providing mediation and classes on non-violence for crikes sakes. Apparently even talking to these people about lowering the levels of violence is “providing material assistance”.
Geesh!
Ditto. I have read the biographies and they are a lot to be admired for their courage and selfless quest on behalf of the beseiged Palestinian people.
I have a question – the definition of ‘foreign’. It generally means not of your own country – so that means that Hamas is ‘foreign to the US’ – which is correct. However, Hamas is not threatening the US.
Hamas was an organization that was primarily founded by Israel itself – they instigated it as a sort of political counterweight to the PLO at the time. And since Israel controls the so-called Palestinian territories, then Hamas isn’t really foreign to them either now is it?
So where is Hamas foreign to?
The problem with Hamas is that after Israel got it started ( as a military operation), the leadership of Hamas gained legitimacy for the organization among the Palestinian people by providing social services (hospitals, schools, etc) in addition.
When that election was held, observers on the ground told the US and Israel what would happen. They warned that because both the US and Israel that their efforts to delegitimize Fatah has worked too well, and that if an election was held at that time, Hamas would probably win. Both Israel and the US pressed on.
The result was that Hamas won. And no one was more surprised than the Hamas leadership.
Talk about squandering an opportunity. The US (and Israel too) should both have stepped up to the plate with advisors, development funds and ‘nation-building’ assistance. They should have helped Hamas form a legitimate and forward-looking non-violent government that was a real partner for peace.
But no. We immediately denounced what was widely regarded as a very fair election, cut off all aid, and have refused to even talk to the democratically elected officials of a government that we insisted on.
Talk about hypocrites. Hamas is not the problem here.

Israeli waters, is it now.
Funny how they are not getting charged with anything. I bet there are lots of companies and people who have never been charged. Looseheadprops had some great stuff about Chiquita Banna not getting charged when making payoffs to death squads and Eric Holder now head of the justice Dept making a deal to avoid any charges.
Any bets the threats of pressure came not from the Israeli government but America however Israel issued the threat? Thus Israel could claim their “government” did not make the threat.
F*cking legal sabotage now, eh…? What absolute dickheads…! *gah*
Der Führer did that? How would he and his Racial State know if these women would give birth to Untermenschen?
Alice Walker: Why I’m going to Gaza…
What an inspiration…! *g*
Hamas is an offshoot of the muslim brotherhood. Nasser, who was pan Arabic began jailing them after they attempted to assassinate him. They fled to Saudia Arabia.
Since then they have been a tool of Saudi Arabia, and were recognized to be a great secret ally as well as a convenient scape goat and preferred opposition group by the US, Israel, and Egypt – post Nasser.
They can be counted on to collaborate at will. Hamas is a little different taking their responsibility as caretakers more seriously than maintaing their own power in Gaza. They are also Palestinians.
As’ad AbuKhalil
TheyWe should have helpedHamasform a legitimate and forward-looking non-violent government that was a real partner for peace.Better.
I haven’t found any reliable reports that can pinpoint where the complaints have come from. Anyone who has been getting a boat ready for this and didn’t carefully outfit their vessel to meet the highest standards deserves to be called on that, though. Planners, I’m pretty sure, understood that, and passed this on to the boats’ crews. There was Israeli sabotage to the MV Rachel Corrie last year, so they are probably watching for that too.
