“…. because I figure you’re smart enough to figure out which one is right.”
That’s part of the answer the Texas governor gave to a kid, prompted by his mom, to related questions having to do with science. Here’s a description of the discussion in the Washington Monthly:
“How old do you think the Earth is?” the kid said. Given Perry’s larger worldview, it seems like a reasonable question. The Texas governor replied, “I don’t have any idea; I know it’s pretty old. So, it goes back a long, long way.”
We can hope Perry doesn’t think 6,000 years is “pretty old.”
At this point, the boy’s mother pushed him to ask Perry about evolution. The candidate explained:
“Your mom is asking about evolution. You know, that’s a theory that’s out there; it’s got some gaps in it. In Texas, we teach both creationism and evolution in our public schools — because I figure you’re smart enough to figure out which one is right.”
They don’t teach evolution and creationism in Texas schools, at least not in science classes. Perry gives away a lot in this short talk:
There’s no excuse for what Perry said to the kid. Was he merely ignorant of what Texas schools do in the science classroom, or did he just say what he said to deflect cognitive dissonance that might come from making this subject one on the table at upcoming GOP candidate debates, in the dumbfest leading up to the 2012 primaries?
Hopefully, this will come up in the GOP debates, as Jon Huntsman has already challenged Perry’s statement:
To be clear. I believe in evolution and trust scientists on global warming. Call me crazy
Michelle Bachman is on record with:
I support intelligent design. What I support is putting all science on the table and then letting students decide. I don’t think it’s a good idea for government to come down on one side of scientific issue or another, when there is reasonable doubt on both sides.
I would prefer that students have the ability to learn all aspects of an issue.
At a 2007 debate, when a bunch of GOP candidates were asked to raise their hand if they believed in evolution, Mitt Romney kept his down. When asked later by David Brody from Christian Broadcasting News, Romney’s campaign replied, “Governor Romney believes both science and faith can help inform us about the origins of life in this world.”
Rick Santorum was such an ardent advocate of intelligent design when he was in the U.S Senate, he proposed an amendment to No Child Left Behind, mandating the inclusion of intelligent design into science curriculum, that became known as the Santorum Amendment. That was in 2001. Fortunately, it didn’t make it into NCLB, which is bad enough without dumbing down our kids on science more than they already are.
Also, fortunately again, in 2005, the most important court decision on evolution since the 1987 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Edwards v. Aguillard, came about: the Pennsylvania case, Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District.
Edwards had nailed the door shut on teaching “creationism” as science in schools. Kitzmiller nailed it shut on trying to do the same with “intelligent design.” Both were definitive. Perry should know that, as should the entire field of GOP 2012 hopefuls.
And so should your average newsperson or debate moderator. To me, this is an important subject, and has been for some time. Science education is vital to our future as a nation, as a planet. Whenever I read, watch or listen to a media person bringing up creationism, intelligent design or evolution as if there might be a scientific component to more than one of those three ideas, I just shake my head.

This is what Amerika has become.
And sorry, but all the evidence points to his as the prevailing trend in the future. This will just get worse.
Using the Fox motto of We report, You decide for teaching Science?
The same Fox as this … http://www.projectcensored.org/top-stories/articles/11-the-media-can-legally-lie/,
“In February 2003, a Florida Court of Appeals unanimously agreed with an assertion by FOX News that there is no rule against distorting or falsifying the news in the United States.”
So what could possibly go wrong???
(Shaking head in disgust at what his country has become, and then banging head on table, over and over again)
I think that the one thing preventing Perry’s ultra conservative school board from forcing the teaching of creationism is the science program that UT has. One can’t have a world class science program at the state university while having to mandate remedial science classes for students from that state before taking college science.
Creationism is a science? Someone needs to ask Michelle to explain the difference between faith and science because I’m pretty sure they’re opposites.
leave rick alone. he’s right. evolution does have gaps. if we came from monkeys, where’d them tails go? hmmmm?
Bachman is such a fucking knucklehead. Let’s put all the numbers on the table and let the kids decide what 6 x 3 equals.
But the State Board of Education sure made a contest out of the debate. What clowns…
To: ET the Austin paper…American Statesman had at least 2 columns on Perry’s play in NH….you may be interested. He is certainly being watched….
Know what? Every school I ever attended–with the exception of a 1 semester vodka-swilling, pot-smoking interlude–was a catholic school. We were taught evolution and religion — in separate classes–and also taught that there the two compatible. Who the hell are these people telling me that you must choose one and evolution is the wrong one? Flase choice and stupid choice. What’s scary to me is that in Bachman’s case, i don’t think it’s bglatant pandering. I think she actually believes that shit.
Sichs times three whats, BF?

I’m sure you all have heard that Rove is dumping on Perry. Just thought I’d add this for your chuckles and grins:

I want mine back!
“…. because I figure you’re smart enough to figure out which one is right.”
Dear, God. Please let them figure out Perry is not right.
I read the Statesman online. M’eh. Not really interested in Perry. It’s my opinion, (though I know it’s not shared by many), that he’s hawking his book rather than running for President. I remember the Statesman breathlessly endorsing Bush in 2000 and again, (though ostensibly reluctantly), in 2004. They have no credibility with me politically anymore.
Aloha, ET…! Congrats on another front page Diary…! ;-)
Btw, have you been following the tragic events that unfolded today in the I/P…? 8-(
I really like that analogy! Kudos.
I’m a bit worried about this blowback as I’ve NOT seen any quotes or words from any articles about Perry that said anything about SCIENCE classes . . . Perry said it was TAUGHT in public schools in Texas . . . that don’t equate to taught in sci classes, n the ass hat mofo has an OUT in this regard.
Thoughts on this?
I mean, proggy’s hammering Perry for this are missing ONE huge point . . . does it matter?

Shakin that bush boss . . . shakin that bush . . .
Great diary, thanks!
recommended and tweeted et — thank you
They were taught in different classes for a reason though. Faith is believing in something without physical proof of it’s existence. Science requires proof. It’s based on material evidence. The truth is even if creationists debunked evolution, it still doesn’t “prove” the existence of God or provide proof that He created the universe. It would just debunk evolution leaving us back to square one.
I really hope this asshole crashes and burns, his faux-shitkicker hubris truly makes Chimpy Bush look like a thoughtful statesman.
And something about his looks – absolutely creeps me out. I know we’re supposed to find him handsome. Well I sure as hell wouldn’t ever get it a car with him.
“GOP presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann said today that Americans “fear the rise of the Soviet Union” during an appearance on a conservative radio talk show.
The Soviet Union broke up into 15 separate republics 20 years ago. Boris Yeltsin was the first freely elected leader of Russia, the largest of those republics.
“What people recognize is that there’s a fear that the United States is in an unstoppable decline. They see the rise of China, the rise of India, the rise of the Soviet Union and our loss militarily going forward,” Bachmann said on Jay Sekulow’s radio show…”

Comrades! Arise!
in
Heh,I wonder if Perry understands that abstract thinking doesn’t usually occur in children until after their first decade. Until then children believe all sorts of things adults tell them.
The only gap is the one between Perry’s ears.
She has faith it’s a science.
Sorry, couldn’t resist. It was begging for it.
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh,
What do you mean where them tails go?
Are you saying you don’t have a tail? What kind of freak are you?
If you don’t have a tail how do swat flies away you azz?
Umm-Humm.
Rote!
Not, wrote. (grins)
Then, as Garrison Keiler asked, why is the playground so close to the dump? (I swear he did.)
*facepalm*
And Perry sure ain’t their Santa Claus! He won’t be bringing them anything but more misery.
How many ‘playgrounds’ are built on old ‘reclaimed’ landfills…?
I actually feel sorry for this woman because it is pretty apparent that she is not playing with a full deck of cards.
Considering his position on global warming I think it’s pretty safe to say that Governor Perry won’t be taking the Science Guy moniker from Bill Nye anytime soon.
http://www.bgladd.com/DrBachmann.jpg
It’s just so weird that–like Bush–Perry was also a cheerleader. Why don’t candidates running from Texas ever have a high college GPA?
Um, I’ve known kids before the age of 10 schooling “adults” on many things including faulty logic and superstitions. Looks like concrete, abstract and critical thinking to me.
Being an Atheist, of course such talk is old hat and not at all surprising. The Religious Right/Social Conservatives have been drilling this theme into the heads of their flock for a long time now.
But even the flock can see that Creationism is bullshit. Not that they dont believe that a omnipotent asshole created everything and all that jive, but that its not actually backed up by any science at all. They know that it is faith based.
On one hand I could become paranoid and jump on the alarmist bandwagon and assume that we are doomed to be an theocracy. But then if you ignore the talking heads on the internet and TV land, and actually talk to people, the picture isnt so bleak.
Regular Christians (as opposed to religious nuts) look at religious nuts as well nuts. Yes even Christians recognize extremists when they see one.
Many Christians reason out that Evolution could be God’s hand at work. Plus it is hard for them to deny an entire field of science based on Evolution. They recognize that Evolution is fact while Creationism is faith. I mean how can one not deny that their faith is an faith and not an science?
Today’s religious nuts, called the Social Conservative’s keep proving to the regular Christian’s that they are an group to avoid being associated with. Much the same as Progressives are learning to stir clear of the Democrats, Republicans are staying away from the Tea Party.
What I find interesting is that there is an large amount of Republicans that havent progressed far enough yet to realize that their Party has been taken over. Although I have talked to some that have noticed and are pissed that they have no where to turn too.
So left is not alone in wanting to start another Political Party. I fantasize about Americans of all makes fighting against extremism in all its forms in our Government. But I am an realist so I really doubt that both sides of the run-of-the-mill Americans can see past their tribalism.
I know that the left sees it as Class warfare, the Top against the bottom, Corporations against the population. But I see it as the Extremists against the sane portion of the population. I narrowed it down because there are bad guys everywhere and they are all extremists fighting for fascism and there really is not a divide between the Left and the Right whether it be good Left, Bad Left, Good Right, Or bad Right Etc.
So people like Perry will eventually be taboo in politics again. It happened before and it will happen again. Its the people that want to have the power over everyone that does not see that the people always get what they want in the end.
OK, using the little kid in the video constitutes Child Abuse.
Sorry I missed the comment session when this diary got front paged. Back to work today and just got home.
6 x 3 = ELEVENTY!
I know cuz I seen it on a Texas Amplifiahr . . .
As Mic Jagger once uttered on a live cut from an album:
“DW’s good tonite.” (about Watts, the drummer, between songs when Charlie banged a bit during Mic’s time on the mic).
Dang, I hope that comes thru . . . seems muddled to me.
LeSigh. I even forget what album that’s from . . .
‘K but . . . still . . . ;-)
He’s not a shitkicker, he’s a coward, most bullies are.
;-)
x2 Doc Puma . ..
How fuckin embarassin can it be to be almost 30 years or so behind the times?
Le. Sigh. Face. Palm.
Oxy. Morans.
End of story.
;-)
ET, it sparked a lot of retorts . . .
GREAT pic at top!
Noodled appendages!
LMBO!
When the child asked about evolution, if Perry had answered truthfully, he would have said that legally only evolution was taught. It’s difficult, however, to police all the teachers in Texas schools and knowing what they’re actually “teaching” their students.
Perry’s word choices give him the contemporary version of “plausible deniability.” A lot of what he says is like this, half lie and half truth. Mostly what he says is just outrageous, which is why the MSM love him and how he will manage to keep himself in the “news” constantly.
Perry played football at Texas A&M. Where did you get the idea he was a cheerleader?
And therein lies the problem when you are relying on 10 year olds to teach the adults. I positively reel everytime I hear about people talking about a 4 year old preacher or some other under 10 prodigy. Uh at 4 years of age my kid had imaginary friends and wanted to grow up to be power rangers. It was positively adorable but I didn’t actually give them much more than a pat on the head when they offered me “guidance.”
There is a reason they’re called children and we don’t allow them to live on their own until they get much older. It pretty much ensures their survival for longer than a decade or two.
I thought the momma in that video was almost as bad as Perry. She should have asked Perry herself rather than put the poor kid in such an embarassing situation.
Of course, it made Perry’s comment about “trusting the kid to be smart enough to figure things out for himself” appear even more ludicrous. The poor kid was coached and prodded and somehow Perry is still asserting this age group wouldn’t/couldn’t be brainwashed into accepting the point of view that creationism was not evidenciary science.
Question? If they do not believe in science, then how can they defend LIFE BEGINS AT CONCEPTION?
CONCEPTION is the scientific terminology of when the male Sperm combines with the female Egg and starts to divide into CELLS!
THAT IS SCIENCE, not Theology!!!!!
Perry is scientifically illiterate. The theory of natural selection does not have any gaps in it. The fossil record, of course, is incomplete, but as it grows it continues to verify the theory.
If intelligent design were real, then why do people need eyeglasses?
Perry did NOT play football at Texas A&M. He was a Yell Leader (cheerleader). There are plenty of sources available for this on the Internet.
“As Mic Jagger once uttered on a live cut from an album:
“DW’s (I’m certain that Jagger says) [Charlie's] good tonite [isn't he].” (about Watts, the drummer, between songs when Charlie banged a bit during Mic’s time on the mic).”
Fixed it for ya. The remark is from the album Get Yer Yas Yas Out, and I think that it precedes “Stray Cat Blues.”
Seems like the locals in Paint Creek are saying that they never saw him on a tractor, or a horse.
If Intelligent Design was true, then why do people die?
Well because the God of the bible (new and old) is an asshole.
Why else would an God punish all women for eating from his favorite apple tree?
