Anonymous has been claiming since shortly after the November 6th election that they foiled a nefarious plot by Karl Rove to steal enough of the electronic vote in key swing states to have given the presidency to George Mitt Romney.
Before the election, Anonymous warned Rove’s people:
After the election, they claim that they did act:
We began following the digital traffic of one Karl Rove, a disrespecter of the Rule of Law, knowing that he claimed to be Kingmaker while grifting vast wealth from barons who gladly handed him gold to anoint another king while looking the other way.
After a rather short time, we identified the digital structure of Karl’s operation and even that of his ORCA. This was an easy task in that barn doors were left open and his wind swept us inside.
We coded and created, what we call The Great Oz. A targeted password protected firewall that we tested and refined over the past weeks. We placed this code on more than one of the digital tunnels and their destination that Karl’s not so smart worker bees planned to use on election night. We noticed that these tunnels were strategically placed to allow tunnel rats to race to the server sewers from three different states. Ah yes, Karl tried to make it look like there were more than three but we quickly saw the folly of his ploy.
We watched as Karl’s weak corrupters repeatedly tried to penetrate The Great Oz. These children of his were at a loss-how many times and how many passwords did they try-exactly 105.
There have been several articles on the web about Anonymous’s claim. I am not claiming that they actually did what they purport to having done. However, Friday, I watched as Anonymous claimed to be bringing down one key Israeli web site after another. Checking their work as it was announced and described on twitter, they appeared to be doing what they claimed:
As the conflict in Gaza escalated this week, hacker group Anonymous launched a series of attacks on websites owned by the Israeli military, government and other institutions within Israel.
Dubbed “OpIsrael,” the mass disruption began early Thursday with hundreds of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, in which websites are flooded with traffic until they crash.
Since then, the scope of attacks has widened to include the deletion of government and financial databases, and the posting of more than 2,000 email addresses and passwords from an Israeli real estate website.
A series of tweets from @YourAnonNews, a Twitter account associated with the hacktivist group, claimed that databases belonging to Bank Jerusalem and the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs had been deleted.
Late Saturday, Anonymous appears to have upped the ante by posting this video:
I wrote earlier in the week about how the intensity of the cyber war aspects of the widening Gaza campaign appear to be a new element. The implications of what this anonymous worldwide campaign against a state war machine may imply are somewhat stunning, especially if they can actually influence how the campaign develops in any meaningful way. If Anonymous, in a matter of weeks, can change the outcome of the American presidential election and influence the conduct of a war a third of the way around the world, we are indeed in a new world.

George Romney? Is he the one who wanted to be president like Mitt Bush? Or is he some other some other George Romney?

That dates me, eh, mfi? Fixed it.
Not to rain on any parades Philip but all of this is at best highly marginal. If they manage to bring down the Israeli CCC system on the other hand …

I’ve been watching black box voting articles now for as long as there have been people on the issue. I know lots of politicians and political operatives who believe a lot of votes have been hacked over the past 12 years, but are totally unwilling to go on record.
Anonymous claims to have specific information on Rove’s thwarted operation, and data showing what it was the alleged thieves were up to. If the collective is capable of altering an election, changing the nature of a small war and submitting an airtight case to the FBI in a matter of weeks – whoa!
Game on – Anonymous appears to have just hacked the IDF blog. Down…

Oh if only Anonymous had allowed for one of the “sleepers” to win this election. I, for one, would really love to be calling Jill “Pres Stein.”
Continuing with our involuntarily dating of ourselves I’m going to comment here rather than EPU myself on your last posting. I may be traducing you but I think you were wrong if you were suggesting that this is just an election ploy that is spiralling out of control:
Egypt Tries to Broker Cease Fire and Truce in Gaza. Israel Responds Provocatively. | MyFDL:
I’ll grant you that there are parallels between and Israel’s wars of agression against Lebanon in 1996 and Gaza in 2008 both of which Israel launched on the eve elections but the situation today is rather worse than it was then.
Last week’s murder of military leader of Hamas’ Ahmed al-Jabari by Israel was followed by a declaration from Islamic Jihad "there are no more red lines" (which there were most emphatically were while al-Jabari was alive) amongst the "red lines" that no longer exist are suicide bombings. Granted one would expect a certain amount of hyperbole from an Islamic Jihad spokesman following the brazen murder of one of Hamas’ most senior people but on balance I think there may be more than just hyperbole there. Hamas have by all accounts been stockpiling impressive amounts of missiles (and by missiles I mean missiles of Fajr5 quality) over the last few years but have fired very few of them. It seems that following al-Jabari’s murder the number of Fajr5′s fired went up from around 600 last year to around 1200 this year of which slightly more than a third were fired following al-jabari’s murder by the Israelis. There are reports that some of those missiles successfully targeted Dimona. The Israeli response has been characteristically brutal and heavy handed. Given the nature of the response – artillery and air bombardment, and the way in which those bombardments are being conducted it seems likely that these bombardments are being conducted as part of a softening up process prior to an armed incursion into Gaza by Israeli troops backed by armour.
I think that Nethanyahu is striking while he may. It could be true that al-Jabari was murdered because the Israelis believed he could no longer keep the more agressive Palestinian factions under control but even if that were true it is only one part of why Nethanyahu is escalating now.
You need to remember that the ground is shifting under Nethanyahu’s feet. Until fairly recently you could neatly divide MENA countries into those who were allied to the West and those opposed. But that has changed and the Palestinians are now getting high-volume political support from Egypt and Qatar both of which were essential parts of Washington’s attempts to maintain hegemony in the region. Even worse from Nethanyahu’s point of view the governments other countries such as Bahrain, the Emirates, Jordan, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia and the Maghreb countries which previously would toe the American line are suddenly preoccuppied with ensuring their own political and personal survival in the face of rising Islamist activism. Part of these efforts consist of paying at least some attention to the fact that the overwhelming majority of their citizens are outraged at what the Israelis are doing to the Palestinians. It’s not surprising that the Egyptian Prime Minister visited Gaza on Thursday and was photoed holding the bloodied corpse of a Palestinian child. What is surprising is that last month, the Emir of Qatar visited Gaza. Actually ‘surprising’ is an understatement it’s downright amazing. The point of all of this is that the diplomatic terrain in Hamas must operate is suddenly rather favourable to it.
Furthermore the Israelis value stability and predictability above all. Neither of which obtain at present. Syria is in the middle of a civil war. Lebanon is in political crisis. There are escalating protests in Jordan, Kuwait, the Gulf states, and Saudi Arabia, and Turkey’s "zero problems" policy lies in tatters. As if all of that were not bad enough Nethanyahu’s Iran policy seems to be unravelling. It’s bad enough that the army Chief of Staff and the direct of Mossad refused flat out to go along with his plans for an attack on Iran in 2010 but what’s really bad is that that the rumours that there has been a lot of back-channel contact between Ali Akbar Velayati and Washington appear to be true. Given that Nethanyahu cannot attack Iran at present and given that he has to keep Yisrael Beiteinu on side he has to be seen to be doing something so he attacks Gaza.
Why Gaza? Why now?
Well, he has to keep Yisrael Beiteinu happy and I’ve already mentioned that al-jabari might have been murdered "pour encourager les autres" but there’s another reason and that’s the intra-Palestinian power struggles currently underway. Within Hamas there’s a series of increasingly bitter arguments going on between the leadership in Gaza and the exiles in Cairo while the struggle between Fatah and Hamas is also heating up. Strike while your enemies are divided is always good tactics.
Any other matters arising?
Just one. Fatah have applied for observer status at the United Nations as an independent sovereign state if granted that would allow them to bring a multitude of law suits against the Israeli government in general and named military officers and civilians officials in particular. Nethanyahu is getting his retaliation in early.

It is 10 degrees F outside and blowing 50, gusting 80 knots. The furnace went out four hours ago. The heating repair guy who is here has replaced the fan blower motor, but is now having difficulties keeping the burner on for more than 3 minutes at a time. going to be a long night…..
I hope he gets it fixed pronto. Try not to turn into a Philsicle while he’s fixing it.

food for thought:
I really really really do not mean to go CT here and have no idea whether there’s any truth to the following, but on a thread over at emptywheel in one of the many blogposts on Patraeus, a comment (which I’ve been unable to locate quickly) by eCAHNomics contained a link to an article suggesting that during his visit to Gaza, the Emir of Qatar was actually there to help Israel locate Hamas leaders for assassination. Have you heard or seen anything to support this? Is there any reason to believe such a theory?
Thanks for your comments. Your remarks would make an excellent diary for the front page.
According to Salon, at the last minute in Ohio, “uncertified ‘experimental’ software patches” were installed on electronic vote tabulation systems in a number of counties in Ohio. And, the polls as I recall showed Obama ahead by just a few points. I was expecting a repeat of Ohio 2004 and was very surprised that didn’t happen.
http://www.salon.com/2012/11/05/ohio_republicans_sneak_risky_software_onto_voting_machines/
Has the furnace been repaired? Are you okay?
I have no proof one way or the other, but my first instinct, guided by watching the hasbara operations in the past, is to say that a thinly-sourced claim that the Emir of Qatar is helping the Israelis locate Hamas leaders so they can be assassinated is just the sort of rumor that the Israelis would disseminate in order to spread confusion and discord among Hamas and its supporters.
Stay warm, Phil!
Thanks for your response P.W. It seems a much more likely probability and in fairness to eCAHN the theory was presented as speculative and I saw no further discussion that added weight to the original link.
It didn’t happen because it couldn’t happen in any way that could be glossed over. Cuyahoga County reported nearly 60% voter turnout before the networks called Ohio for Obama. For several decades, in any statewide election when Cuyahoga County has 60% turnout, no Republican running in a statewide election has won.
Republican pontificators such as Rove, Will, and Gingrich, not to mention the Romney campaign itself, were banking on no more than a 55% turnout here, the likes of which enabled Ken Blackwell and company to flip the vote to Bush in 2004.
Local reports suggest that they underestimated just how pissed off Cuyahoga County voters were when the Republican Secretary of State, Jon Husted, flagrantly attempted to suppress their vote. They turned out anyway. So did the Ohio State students in Franklin County in spite of projected lower turnout rates for younger voters.
In the face of those things, Romney had no chance of carrying Ohio without electoral fraud so huge that Obama would have had to fight it.
The comment was @4 on this Dissenter post. The link was to Presstv.

Furthermore the person who propounded such a ludicrous theory needs to go back on their anti-halucinogenic medication as a matter of urgency.

Oops sorry the FARS report is here:
Fars News Agency :: Israel Contacts Washington, Doha before Assassinating Hamas Leaders:
There’s just one teeny tiny little problem and that’s that he didn’t actually visit the residences of any of the Hamas leadership while he was in Gaza. Another teeny tiny little problem is that Hamas leaders are notorious for their ascetic lifestyle. I’d drop dead with astonishment if they accepted any gifts from him during his visit.

ET and mfi, thank you for this information. Anonymous should get a Nobel prize, IMO.
I was hoping you’d weigh in. Thanks, OB.
Thanks for the additional info. I discounted the story because it was too James Bond, but I didn’t understand what the advantage to Iran would be of pinning something on Qatar – is it because of US/Qatar ties? Thanks.
Qatar, Kuwait, and Saudi are all Wahabbi states their behaviour towards Iran has always been such that any Iranian government agency is going to start spitting venom at the mere mention of the place let alone of it’s rulers. That ‘report’ would have been intended primarily for domestic consumption with any spillover to global Shi’i diaspora being an added bonus.
mfi
You’re welcome. No doubt Philip will respond after he’s thawed out.

Thanks. I’ve occassionally followed a link to presstv for something because it’s particularly timely or not covered elsewhere, or just because it indicates something of the official line, but unless the topic is pretty basic, it’s difficult for me to sort out the different levels of propaganda.

Thanks for bird-dogging this tale to ground, MFI. The idea of the Emir of Qatar a) being stupid enough to do something that would pretty much guarantee his own assassination should it be proved, and b) stooping from his lofty position to dirty his royal hands with nasty spy stuff is pretty risible IMO.
He’s probably still in bed, assuming he was able to go to bed last night and didn’t have to stay up making sure the water in his home’s plumbing didn’t freeze and burst the pipes.

Al Arabiya is reporting… Tens of millions of hackers target Israel govt websites
More than 44 million hacking attempts have been made on Israeli government web sites since Wednesday when Israel began its Gaza air strikes, the government said on Sunday.
Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said just one hacking attempt was successful on a site he did not want to name, but it was up and running after 10 minutes of downtime.
Typically, there are a few hundred hacking attempts a day on Israeli sites, the ministry said.
Defense-related sites and those of Israel’s prime minister, president and Foreign Ministry have been targeted.
A ministry spokesman said while the attacks have come from around the world, most have been from Israel and the Palestinian territories.
“The ministry’s computer division will continue to block the millions of cyber-attacks,” Steinitz said. “We are enjoying the fruits of our investment in recent years in developing computerized defense systems.”
Steinitz has instructed his ministry to operate in emergency mode to counter attempts to undermine government sites…

mfi
Aloha, gor…! Now that would be quite a sight to behold…! ;-)
I’ll believe it when I see it Charles. What that reuters report doesn’t mention is that it’s very easy for a single hacker to run up millions of attempts in a relatively short time. (That’s how “dictionary” attacks work for example, the attacking computer sends each and every word in a dictionary file as a separate attempt to “guess” the password).

The issue of Israel splits the left just as the issue of Immigration splits the right. It’s really not a left-right issue to start with. It’s a Nat’l issue. Two groups are claiming the same land. If your on the PAL/Arab side you cheer for Hamas and the PLO etc. and hate Israel and in many cases Jews as well. If your for Israel’s survival and Nat’l sovereignty your against Hamas and the PLO and the 22 Arab countries and most of the Muslim world. It’s in short a War that’s been going on for 64 yrs. now. Many of the principles are formerly @ War and some are not.
Wouldn’t it just! The perils of Pauline ain’t a patch on it I’m tellin’ ya. Have you entered al-Jazeera’s competition to guess the name of his demure sidekick who provides suitably uplifting moral support in several of the episodes? I feel confident that my entry (Maroq O’Lalabama) will be shortlisted.
mfi
… hate Israel and in many cases Jews as well….
Once again, whipping out the old anti-semite card, eh seaglass…? Nice try there, thanks for playing tho…!
I hadn’t heard about it, gor…! I’ve been steering clear of Al Jazeera of late with their rah-rah reporting of the Syrian strife…!
Put that straw man out in the yard. It’s for the birds.
I do not hate Israel or Jews. I have not “taken sides”. I do deplore the open air imprisonment and blockade of essential supplies into Gaza that is the policy of the Israeli government. Gaza needs a port not controlled by Israel. Gaza needs an airport not controlled by Israel. The people of Gaza need to be able to choose which land they will cultivate and live on. Water, electricity and all essentials need to be controlled by the people of Gaza.
I am quite sympathetic to Israel’s need to protect itself. I am Jewish and am a citizen of both the US and Israel.
Your brush is not just too broad; it’s out of bounds completely.
I was up real, real late, so selpt in far later than usual. 30 minutes after the heating guy left, the furnace went back down. The only thing that had gone wrong with the furnace in the first place was that the bearings went out in the circulation fan motor for that forces heated air (from natural gas) into the ducting system. The heater guy replaced it, and a thermocouple that activates the flame inducer in the furnace burn chamber. He charged A LOT of money for the night call. I was furious about the combination of high price and poor results.
So I set up some electric heaters in the house, and chopped firewood for the wood stove in our living room, that is there for power outages. Had to clean it out, as it hasn’t been used in 3 years.
Still blowing 50, gusting 80, at 15 degrees F.
That totally bites, ET…! Will the electric heaters and wood stove suffice for your plumbing…?
If the shoe fits Tuttle wear it dude. Obviously your a Hamas guy. Ok, NP , I’m obviously not.
You know what. I find lots of lefties that cannot accept that not all of us support Hamas for some reason. I’m open about my distaste for people that strap bombs to other people’s children and don’t have the guts to do it themselves. Cowards is what they really are. Plus, blowing up people on buses and in restaurants is not exactly an act of the brave or the intelligent. Oh and since they killed a cousin of mine while doing it I’m more then a little bit pissed off about it.
Hopefully. We’re running slow hot water in the pipes closest to a cold wall.
I support humanity, seaglass.
I support peace.
I deplore violence and organized mayhem, no matter who engages in those things.
I also hope that people might learn … from their own experience, and the experience of their parents and grandparents …
The oppressed ALWAYS resent being oppressed, be they Jew, be they Arab, be they anyone one of us … any and ALL of us.
Period.
If the strong will not cease their oppression, then the oppressed have a moral and a human right to resist.
Once upon a time people known as Jews were being systematically oppressed, even killed, as were other “groups” … but no one cared to notice or know … today, we have those who were once oppressed being the oppressors … dare we hope that in strength they might stop and consider what it is that they do?
Who notices?
Who knows?
Who cares?
DW
Understandably. What are your options for getting it put right and also some form of redress?
mfi
We will keep heating on wood and electricity until tomorrow, when he will be back at much reduced rates, to make things right. I have a local reputation for being fair but demanding with people and companies who do this stuff, and am listed as one who doesn’t hesitate to go to the BBB or small claims if not satisfied with quality.
Great good on ya, ET, and more and sustained warmth, as well.
DW
Good.
mfi
To get back on topic. One of the things I’ve noticed is that this time around is how incoherent the Israeli political line is. I don’t think they expected a hard line response to their murdering al-Jarbir. I’m not at all certain that they have a clear goal. Your thoughts on that Philip?
mfi
X3
Well said.
Jung coined a term for that phenomena:
Enantiodromia. Literally, “running counter to,” referring to the emergence of the unconscious opposite in the course of time. This characteristic phenomenon practically always occurs when an extreme, one-sided tendency dominates conscious life; in time an equally powerful counterposition is built up, which first inhibits the conscious performance and subsequently breaks through the conscious control.
… dare we hope that in strength they might stop and consider what it is that they do?
It took a numinous experience for St. Paul, on the road to Damascus to stop him from persecuting Christians. But to even stop and consider, it often takes a significant event or outside help. It’s looking like Israel is going to have to be compelled to arrive at that moment, through things like BDS, and world public opinion, and Israel is losing on that front.
I know for myself and people I’ve known who are highly motivated, to “stop and consider,” even when the desire and intention is there is to put it mildly is difficult because of enormous resistance to seeing ourselves as we are, rather than as we imagine ourselves to be. It must be orders of magnitude greater when we’re talking about an entire nation.
Sorry. Forgot to preview. The paragraph beginning with “Enantiodromia” should be in quotes, and the sentence beginning with “dare we hope.”
I’ve asked Max Blumenthal to translate the highlights of this speech yesterday by the racist extremist MK member, Michael Ben-Ari, who has formed a new faction for the upcoming elections. He’s an eliminationist. As you can see from the crowd attending his speech, this Gaza campaign is unleashing the beast within Zionism as much as we have yet seen.
Writing a new diary on the disturbing statements being made by him, Sharon’s son and others.
I could make out some of it – the most telling that I understood was towards the end the speaker was saying “Give the citizens of Israel security and security is erasing Gaza.”
Disgusting but not even remotely surprising. It’s an inherently racist society and always was. It’s just that that’s becoming more blatantly apparent now. Yes I saw the piece by Sharon’s son – barbaric.

More of the end:
“Netanyahu, before you give the citizens of Israel bread or anything else, give the citizens of Israel security and security is erasing Gaza.”
Some of the chanting in the beginning is
“The people demand security.”
“All honor to the army (literally), meaning “Good for the army.”
“The people demand the removal of the leftists.”
And not a word of this can be found, as far as I know, on any American news program, especially not the ones most Americans are likeliest to encounter.
My friend Lora posted an hour or so ago that the bombs are close and there are no goodbyes.
I am so sad for all in Gaza as we watch what Israeli leaders call the elimination, sending Gaza to the middle ages.
Interestingly, Hamas links truce to end of Gaza border blockade…
Which is exactly what Hamas should demand as a basic starting point…!

I’m dreading what is happening there.

Anonymous just reported tel-aviv.gov.il down. Sounds like city government site. Anyone know?
The Karl Rove “takedown” wasn’t the work of Anonymous.
In fact, the person who posted the laughably yoda-esque “press release” is very well known. He is none other than good ol “Stranded Wind” himself. Catch it while you can. SW has a habit of deleting most of his content.
But good show mr. Rauhauser you’ve been circulated at both Wonkette as well as My FDL.
And you are entirely correct about this, whatever your motivation for deleting your Project Vigilant diary from FDL:
Could this explain Rove’s incredulous insistence on Fox that Romney was winning Ohio, should be winning Ohio, had to be winning Ohio?
“It could be true that al-Jabari was murdered because the Israelis believed he could no longer keep the more agressive Palestinian factions under control..”
Or because he was too close to the truce deal. The Israeli government needs those rockets incoming. Why would the Zionists stir up those more aggressive Palestinian factions by murdering al-Jabari?
“Furthermore the Israelis value stability and predictability above all.” The Israeli people might, but the Israeli politicians don’t. The government needs to have those Mooslems acting up so that they can keep putting them down and showing the world (and their constituents) how necessary that is. Israel needs to be threatened. It’s Israel’s raison d’etre, as you know. Also makes it easier to steal the Mooslem’s stuff and eliminate them.
And as for its neighbors, I’m sure you’re well aware of this too:
“The destabilization of Syria and Lebanon as sovereign countries has been on the drawing board of the US-NATO-Israel military alliance for at least ten years.”
