RT TV‘s meteoric young on-air commentator, Alyona Minkovsky, left the network in late July, to take a position at Huffington Post’s new real-time web niche, HuffPost Live. While at RT TV, Minkovsky’s interviews were edgy and provocative. Her interviewing skills combined with what appeared to be a thirst for knowledge about news that seldom or never gets covered by the likes of Rachel Maddow or Ed Schultz, for instance. Compared to Alyona, Rachel was more like FOX than like progressive.
Since her move to HuffPost Live, it has been almost painful to watch how the new show seems to have sucked the life and soul out of a brilliant young news person. I guess HuffPost could do that to almost anyone, though. I stopped watching.
On her last show before exiting into Arianna’s fief in the Borg, Alyona interviewed Firedoglake‘s Jane Hamsher and the Guardian‘s Glenn Greenwald. I praised her fine work up to that point in her career, as did Kevin Gosztola.
So what did RT TV do to make up for the loss of Minkovsky? On September 4th, a new show debuted, featuring Abby Martin. According to RT‘s bio page on her:
Abby was involved in the creation of multiple new media projects. She is a self taught editor, videographer, writer, journalist and artist. In 2009, she founded her own citizen journalism media organization called Media Roots based in Oakland, CA. There, she editorially managed and produced hundreds of multimedia stories, including front line coverage of the Occupy Oakland crackdowns.
Abby is also the youngest member on the board of Project Censored, the largest research organization in the country, that works to publish the top 25 censored news stories every year. While based in the Bay Area, she hosted a weekly radio show with Project Censored on KPFA, a Pacifica affiliate FM radio station.”
I’ve caught a few YouTube clips from her show, Breaking the Set, and from her short feature, Brainwash Update. She’s sort of like Minkovsky on steroids. Unfortunately, I’ve been way too busy with teaching, conducting and composing this fall to watch much, but her reports on Gaza may have been the best on American television. She was visibly moved, even physically disturbed by the possibly intentional Israeli attacks on newsmen, including RT, during the recent Gaza massacre. But this one threw me for a loop:
I would not want to piss off this courageous reporter.
Welcome to the battle, Abby the Hasbara Slayer.
After Martin’s in-your-face response to threats, she was again criticized by Zionist media. Here’s how she responded (28 minutes):
She’s not taking prisoners.
I’d like to see Martin interview the Israeli Ambassador to the Netherlands, Haim Divon, next. As the Gaza massacre was winding down, he went to a speech at which “full-time fascist” Leon de Winter raged:
On the night a ceasefire came into effect ending eight days of Israeli slaughter that left 162 people, the vast majority unarmed civilians, dead in Gaza, Dutch columnist and author Leon de Winter proposed adding chemicals to Gaza’s water supply to sterilize the population.
The website PowNed reported that de Winter “made his proposal for forced eugenics yesterday evening in Amsterdam at a solidarity meeting of Dutch Jews,” and that the speech by de Winter was broadcast this morning by Dutch mainstream and publicly-funded Radio 1.
PowNed said:
De Winter responded in his speech to the accusations of genocide leveled against Israel, saying that the population of Gaza had only increased over the last few years. “Maybe we should secretly add some means of birth control to Gaza’s drinking water,” De Winter proceeded to propose.
The suggestion was met with roaring laughter by the public. Among the participants that evening were the Israeli ambassador to the Netherlands, Hiam Devon [sic], and the cheerful leader of the [religious ultra-conservative] SGP party, Kees van der Staaij.
De Winter blogged until 2008 on the mainstream liberal news site Elsevier. He is also an “an adjunct fellow” at the Hudson Institute, a right-wing American think-tank.
While de Winter, known for his “humor,” might have intended his suggestion as some sort of sick joke, the reported reaction suggests that the audience were only too ready to mock an already dehumanized population.
Maybe Martin can interview Divon on his seeming support for such a strange and public fascist, whose ideas strike me as boilerplate Anders Breivik.
Maybe Martin can interview the commanding officer of the Israel Defense Forces’ social media unit, Lieutenant Sacha Dratwa. Here’s the lieutenant, posing on his facebook page, as President Obama:
I suppose in his racist mind, he thought he was being funny. The American blog, YourBlackWorld did not think Lt. Dratwa was funny. At all. Nor did Democratic Underground.
Maybe Lt. Dratwa feels their anti-Semitism keeps them from seeing the true humor in his, uh, parody.
Yeah – that’s the ticket.
Good luck, Abby Martin.

[Video] Rand Paul Tries to Intimidate & Harass Journalist After A Youtube Video
Yeah, Abby Martin rulez!
Luke posted that the day after Minkovsky left RT. Martin is surprisingly candid in an interview with Rudkowski on the eve of the program change.
Excerpt of Abby Martin (begin at time point 2:54): “So I had to go to the Capitol Buiding and meet with this guy in a small room, like an interrogation room, and it wasn’t just him. It was the bureau chief of Al Jazeera, the bureau chief of CNN, Fox News, MSNBC. All these bureau chief heads sat at the table and basically confronted me about what had happened. And wanted to get my side of the story.”
Just one question from Martin, Rand Paul loses his mind and sends out the goon squad but note the corporate media folks that played along in Paul’s intimidation scheme.
Having watched both videos previously, I have two observations.
1. Abby Martin is displaying the correct amount of righteous anger. If she keeps up this anger, she will lose her credibility.
2. The Israeli spokes people are like the Bush spokes people. If you say something on air (even lies), people will believe it. These spokes people never get called on it. They depend on a compliant press. And I love it when a news person challenges a political idiot.
Great piece, Mr. Teller. I am especially interested in (what, for lack of a better term I will characterize as) media criticism. The reference to Huffington’s presence in the media landscape as “The Borg” was and is apt – and very sad. Perhaps Minkovski will use the Huffington Borg as a lever to vault her into a higher media profile. Such a move would allow her to do real journalism on her own terms.
I don’t know enough about Abby Martin to comment. However, I will say that the set-up bit for “Breaking the Set” is very cool. Seeing Wolf Blitzer get sledgehammered into silence (by a smoking hot lady, no less) pretty much made my day.
Yup and Yup.
Nice to see what get through the gate keepers!
Nice to see (someone) get through, I meant to say.
Good that there are some young people out there willing to work against and outside the corporate media on important issues (and a few older ones who have eschewed corporate media and still managed to survive). There always have been voices, but increasing media sophistication and technology may get some of them heard more widely.
How ironic is it that the network is Russia Today (RT) giving substantive air time to issues of liberty, humanitarian fairness and the like to which US media likes to pretend it has a copyright.
“How ironic is it that the network is Russia Today (RT) giving substantive air time to issues of liberty, humanitarian fairness and the like to which US media likes to pretend it has a copyright.’
Same can be said about Al Jazeera. I’ll take Al Jazeera and RT over MSNBC, CNN and FOX any day.
What I would like to ask Alex Selsky when he says “All we want is quiet,” is:
If the Palestinians stop firing rockets, would Israel acknowledge the human rights of Palestinians, end its discrimination and violence, and stop taking Palestinians’ land?
and, if the roles were reversed, would Israel resist non-violently?
(not that I would expect an honest answer from a spokesman for Netanyahu)
“When thieves fall out, honest men come into their own.”
Bagdad Bob returns. Big fan of RT.
I agree that heterodox truth-tellers are often featured at RT. But I’d have to say that we get the channel over-the-air now, and some of the guests are…not up to the task (I’m floundering for a phrase to avoid saying ‘creepy and uninformed or very biased). ;o)
But you may be interested in exiledonline’s Project S.H.A.M.E. Yves Smith spotlighted it a couple months ago, though there don’t seem to a lot of new articles/exposes since then.
I watch Abby’show and I wish she was on the air for an hour instead of 30mins….she has guts and will stand up. The show rambles a bit but overall Abby does a nice job and does not take much BS. Sorry to read about Alonya.. I don’t watch Huff post live so I have not seen her…As for Rand Paul he is a BS artist…so much for liber values and freedom…
Yeah, I’m pretty untutored myself when it come to alternative media, and I’m not surprised that it is uneven. But it’s good to see a lit bit here,a little bit there, pop up in places. It’d be nice to think it will blossom. But then I suppose we wouldn’t call it alternative.
Thanks for the link.
Abby Martin Rocks!!! It’s so Orwellian that RT is one of the best sources for honest news reporting today…that fact just blows me away! It’s time to wake up America!
I would like to have seen her follow up with the question, “what right does Israel have to target even the broadcast antenna, especially knowing the attack could injure or kill innocent people in the building?” Squelching free speech is hardly a justifiable defense of Israel’s security.
Also, she did not get a direct answer to her point about Israel expanding the West Bank settlements, only the diversionary “we left Gaza seven years ago”.
Beyond the excellent points she made, I think she might be the only journalist who might be able to make the Israelis understand how their longstanding punitive policies are only fomenting more violence against themselves.
No doubt he and all his friends thought it was very witty. Israel is a very racist country. It’s one of the reasons why I stopped visiting the place.
mfi
Follow-up questions. How refreshing not to have Abby Martin “we’ll just have to leave it there” her guest.
The best video daily alternative news is Democracy Now. Ed Schultz can be good on union issues, Rachel Maddow on women’s issues, but Democracy Now is even better on those two, and on just about everything else too. They also are by far the best English language coverage of Latin America and US Hispanic issues.
I try to watch DN every day.
8th day now without a furnace. The new one is almost installed, and I’ve gone through a cord of wood. The wind has died down to 10 to 25 knots, and the mercury is hanging in at 11 degrees F.
I was wondering how that was getting along. Next year you investigate having a stove that can be integrated into your heating system. They’re very common throughout Europe and I can testify that they’re very effective.

Around the 13:00 minute mark, the Israeli spokesperson asks why Palestinians do not rebuild their own communities instead of attacking Israel with rockets. Well gee, guy! If Israel allowed Gaza to import building materials (Israel fears that concrete would be used to build bunkers), then maybe Gaza could do just that. Maybe if Gaza wasn’t treated as an open-air prison and blockaded from getting things that make life bearable, y’know, maybe Palestinians wouldn’t be so angry!
And I’m sorry, but the idea that “We were just shooting at something on top of the press building, we weren’t trying to kill anybody inside” is just WAY too hair-splitting!
>>
bleating justifications for baby killing by religious racists aside, Abby knows, America knows, the whole world knows who pays for this .. we own Gaza
end religious warfare in our lifetime
That same panel of big media that was sitting on the other side of the table, who confronted Abby Martin shows what the M$M is. They are the Ministry of Truth, they are in bed with Government and business and they control the stories and issue propaganda, and Al Jazeera is now part of that.
The exact same thing happened to Inner City Press in their reporting at the UN. The big media sit on a credentialing board, who are controlled by the PTB and Ban Ki Moon.
UN Ban on Free Expression But For “Common Purpose,” Or Can’t Be Protected
Matthew Russell Lee’s reports are thick with links to sources or his own previous reporting, which I’ve not included.
UN journalists threaten to expel reporter
He’s even got the UN Reporter for the Neocon’s Foundation for the Defense of Democracies and the right-wing CNSNews defending and writing about this issue:.
Free Press Stifled at United Nations, Reporters Say
Matthew Lee really does fearless reporting about jaw dropping corruption at the UN @innercitypress http://www.innercitypress.com/ It’s a really small outfit, the operation puts out wholesale unfiltered news and the big guys steal from him a lot. Not having a video program platform this reporting lacks exposure. If you rifle through his site, you’ll come away sick to your stomach.
Anyway, both incidences are glimpses of an Information Cartel and they are aggressive gatekeepers.
Thanks, shekissesfrogs.
So many gates, so many keepers…..
Good luck with the furnace. We went 7 days after an ice storm/power outage in Jan, 1994 (western Virginia). Our good wood stove in the lower level pulled us through. No electric of course. Fortunately we were downhill from the town water tank that fed us, so we had gravity water. In our current house we have a propane backup stove (wife didn’t want any more wood, I understand) which is not situated to circulate through the whole house, even if it were powerful enough. So I keep my fingers crossed.
All of which is to say it takes some event like you have to remember how vulnerable we are in our reliance on technology, even if it’s something as seemingly mundane as a furnace.
10 to 25 knots is still a breeze, especially @ 11F. Hang in there.
She let him ramble on, and didn’t demand answers. He controlled the time to the point he started with 2000 years of monopoly on victimhood meme… tiny Israel, with one little strip of land – alone against the whole big bad world. Hopefully she’ll get better at this.
Honest reporters and those on the left usually don’t understand that they are dealing with skilled liars who don’t follow their rules of fairness. They don’t deserve to be given the benefit of the doubt. The right knows it’s trench warfare and they don’t care about getting filthy or bloody. Winning is everything to them- and it’s not hearts and minds: The ends justify the means.
I’d sure agree on Amy Goodman, except for on R2P for Libya. Same on that issue for Al Jazeera. Both their coverages over that made me quite uncomfortable.
Yes and excellent comment. This is the beginning of a great post.
Actually this is a project. We should name the gatekeepers and drag them out into the light for everyone to see starting with the bureau chiefs of Al Jazeera, CNN, Fox News and MSNBC that tried to messy with Abby.
I have a few comments about Abby and Russian news reporting. I do like her fearlessness and attempting to hold the spokespersons accountable. I know, however, that you don’t always ask the questions that you wanted to ask in the way you wanted to ask them. In this case, I feel that she missed the major point that israel “only wanting quiet,” and they “don’t target civilians” should have provided her with the opportunity to speak about the children that israel killed before the rockets began coming in. Why were these children killed with no Hamas “terrorists” hiding behind them. Why does the map of land “controlled” by the Palestinians show that it has decreased by about 95%? Is that something that they should be “quiet” about? I do hope that Abby keeps on because she is good. I wonder how Alyona feels now. I don’t have any reason to go to huffpo anymore unless a link takes me there.
I don’t know if anyone else noticed this, but way back when we were fighting in Viet Nam, we used to get the body counts. After a battle the us army would say, for example, that 50 enemy were killed and 2 Americans were killed or wounded. Shortly after the NVN news would report that 25 Vietnamese were killed and 15 Americans were killed. About two weeks later the Russian news service would report that 35 Vietnamese and 10 Americans were killed. About two weeks later, the us army would amend its numbers to reflect the Russian report. In many ways we have, and have had, a press as controlled as what we say of the Russian press.
I remember the time. I remember reading the honest casualty lists for Americans in the Army Times every week. Sometimes it took awhile for the honest numbers to add up, but other than MIA, they eventually did.
Abby Martin is much more honest than Amy Goodman. Abby Martin will bravely talk about 9/11 and other important topics, while Amy Goodman avoids those things like the plague (just like all the other good little MSM hosts, obediently following their orders from above). It’s people like Abby Martin that are going to bring sanity back to America and the world.
Amy Goodman is a 9/11 gatekeeper, but you can’t have everything.
I know…and in doing so (along with the other gatekeepers) they are destroying everything of true value and creating a hideous world.
Having watched(and read) many DoS daily press briefings, Matt Lee, kicks ass…! What a railroad job…! 8-(
Btw, on Al Jazeera’s credibility… Israel relaxes restrictions on Gaza fishermen… Wtf…?
I want an honest accounting of the Suicide rates, both Vets and Active Duty…! 8-(
Selsky roold, Abby droold.
So is there anything that Abby gets wrong? If so, please explain.
I hope that the term “9/11 gatekeeper” isn’t just a way to smear people who understand that metals weaken as they’re heated and don’t retain their full rated room-temperature strength right up to their official melting points. (Hint: Why is blacksmithing possible? Because metals weaken and are malleable when they’re heated until they glow — but well before they melt.)
For more 9/11 metal mischief, go here.
So is there anything that Abby gets wrong? If so, please explain.
Ah, the inevitable, adorable Randall, doing his short impression of FOX news on election eve.
I thought she meant Baghdad Bob as in Baghdad Alex, or possibly Tel Aviv Bob.
Building 7 did not melt. Sorry.
Phoenix Woman, I apologize, but you just don’t know what you’re talking about. I have been working with metal in high-end custom fabrication for the last twenty years. The temperatures reached in a Class A office fire and/or from jet fuel fires (which is a hi-grade of kerosene) are just not hot enough (not even close) to significantly weaken the type of steel used in the WTC, especially at the core. A blacksmith forge is very different type of situation (focussed heat & constant fuel), from the types of fires that were possible at the WTC. What’s why no steel frame skyscraper ever collapsed from fire before 9/11.
Here’s a few things you may what to look into:

Are you sure it’s really the same Randall Kohn that we’ve all come to know and
lovedespisetolerate. The old Randall Kohn could at least spell. This new version seems to have severe literacy problems.Hmmmm.
Of course it could be that this is the old Randall Kohn but that he’s overdosed on his own racial hatred and is now as gaga as St. Ronny.

He’s gaga. I try to be civil, though. There may be a soul to save .

Two for a nickel, five for a dime,
Christianity will be glad to sell you one,
Any old time!
Let he who is without fault cast the first slur.
Otherwise, your words impart to those with acute nasal sensitivities the striking, relentless odor of
Pferdemist!
Rockets, rockets sent over there,
They always seem to be in the air,
And whom they maim and how many they kill,
The sender really does not care.
As long as they are Israelis,
None should be spared.
Seems we are back to the ancient dilemma of whose ox is being gored.
Massacre-Pferdemist!
I think it’s time to reflect on your monstrous treatment of others.

I loved Alonya, but it turns out Abby is even better. Somehow, more truth gets spoken on RT then other news networks. I would love to know exactly why that is.
The bottom line is people ought to be in control of these networks, not our corporate masters! Turning the media over to the people would greatly lessen the need for campaign finance reform (cause let’s face it, funding these corrupt parties and their conventions with taxpayer money it hardly ideal). Just give the people the networks (or at least some of them) and let the people be informed about the truth.
Did you forget? Mud people don’t have souls.
