Thanks so much for all the over-the-top rhetoric about how the Democrats are unlawful fascist tyrants who must be overthrown or killed.
Thanks so much for nodding and winking at the teabaggers who paraded around with firearms and “Time To Water The Tree Of Liberty” t-shirts at Democratic healthcare townhalls.
Thanks so much for denying all responsibility every time some nut goes off and attacks liberals or Democrats, and/or implying that they were perfectly justified.
Thanks so much for fighting so hard to make it easy to buy guns and carry them around everywhere.
I have some questions for you, if you’re not too busy telling us all about how Jared Loughner is a pot-smoking hippie:
1) If all these acts of violence are committed by dangerously disturbed people who are completely apolitical and uninfluenced by your steady drumbeat of “DEMOCRATS ARE TYRANNICAL AND BAD! KILL DEMOCRATS!”, then wouldn’t they be attacking conservatives in roughly equal numbers?
2) If you deplore these violent acts of dangerously disturbed individuals acting completely on their own with no political agenda whatsoever, why do you insist on making it so easy for them to acquire guns? Especially when the law of averages suggests that the next twenty or so Totally Random Apolitical Attacks will be on conservatives?
3) Have you, at long last, no sense of decency? How can you continue to use such recklessly violent language after so much violence? If you had dinner with a family who lost a family member to gun violence, would you be cracking gun jokes all night long or talking about how much you’d like to see some liberal politician taken out and shot?
4) Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you people???

Sense of decency? Not much evidence of that from the wingnuts. I remain hopeful though.
What’s wrong with them? Let me think…
They’re deranged sociopaths?
Ever notice that all the dangerously disturbed individuals all seem to kill for GOP causes?
Tell me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are.
The GOP seems to have a bunch of angry, paranoid, delusional, drug using can’t get a date (remember ACORN Pimp honestly I thought he was going to be the one to snap next), logic impaired, magical thinkers who all want to be in the ingroup.
Its like they never grew up after highschool.
I’m tired of the MSM saying both sides need to tone it down. We don’t talk about shooting people.
People are dead because of GOP hate Radio, TV, Internet yes we are going to fight back!
Yes we are going to hurt the GOP’s feelings by pointing out the shooter read some AZ hate groups newsletter.
Yes we are going to point out Gabby’s tea bagger opposition had a shoot an M-16 to help remove Gabby Fundraiser.
Yes Sarah had a bullseye of Gabby on her website.
Yes every GOP Media personality who threatened Gabby better get a lawyer because every family of the victims is going to sue.
Every advertiser who backs these guys faces a boycott.
I heard Myspace pulled his profile can we get his friends list somehow through the courts?
Any bets this guy befriended Sarah Palin, Glen Beck, the Tea Party, Rand Paul you know all the Gold is the only real currency, states rights, anti abortion types.
Does the GOP really want to play chicken with us on this issue of whether the murderer was a Lefty or Righty?
He seems to stand with the right on every issue.
“4) Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you people???”
What isn’t????
The media and right wing rhetoric have been so successful that I have actually seen an online poll today suggesting that Democrats promote more violence than Republicans. Of course Tea Baggers were the winners, but still….
Does anyone know of any Democrat anywhere who told listeners to “reload”, or published pictures of opponents with gunsights over their faces. I have never heard of any such talk or actions anywhere, ever, from a Democrat.

Ds are too afraid of their own shadow to threaten anyone with physical violence.
Also too spineless & mentally deficient to defend themselves against real attacks.
As I’ve typed many times before, Ds are too dumb to live. Really, they should all get Darwin Awards and then be relegated to the dustbin of history.
IMHO some right-wingers and Tea Party members use violent language because it makes them feel “tough”. They’re really not. They’re frightened little children, scared of everything, ready to give up every liberty for “safety”. And ready to espouse violence to insure lack of opposition.
I only have to look at Sarah (show me the money) Palin in her “Fight Like a Girl” shirt to know that she would blubber and cry if anyone ever attacked her in real life.
None of them are brave, they’re all frightened phonies, but the unstable among us don’t realize that and take them at their word.

Diagree, eCAHN. I think Democrats from the (now nearly invisible) wing of the Democratic party realize that everyone has a right to their opinion, however maddening or wrong they may be. I am horrified that John Crybaby Boehner comes from Ohio, and I despise him, but I would never wish him harm. Mental health care, maybe, but not harm.
What’s wrong with them? Would you like alphabetically or in order of depravity from least to most?
Um, disagree that was, curse my bumbling fingers.
Of course. Conservatism is a symptom of insecurity. Just look at them all as an army of Peter Pettigrews.

Great post, Eli.

I gotta disagree with that. You’re stereotyping big time. And it’s just not true. Democrats aren’t “afraid” of confrontation like you suggest, they are trying to get beyond it and recognize that it’s usually counter productive. If I had to go into a firefight with a bunch of liberals or a bunch of conservatives, I’d choose the former without hesitation.
I’ve dealt successfully & gently with bullies, face-to-face. Turns out to be pretty straightforward, as they fold easily. Corp media has been trained not to do any such thing.
I also had Wall St. colleagues, including one 6′+, softig male, who claimed to suffer from serious stomach pains for weeks before & after his annual review with his boss & my superboss (bosses’s boss). I found him (teh sb) intimidating but not overwhelming.
Courage!
“1) If all these acts of violence are committed by dangerously disturbed people who are completely apolitical and uninfluenced by your steady drumbeat of “DEMOCRATS ARE TYRANNICAL AND BAD! KILL DEMOCRATS!”, then wouldn’t they be attacking conservatives in roughly equal numbers?”
___
I been arguin’ that since yesterday. Show me the relative body count tallies.
It also applies to the equally bogus “both sides do it” argument.
Not sure what you disagree with. Are Ds not too dumb to live? Are they not spineless? Do they not defend themselves despite how much they are attacked?
5) Why are you still busy scrubbing your websites of imagery you must know will be connected to yesterday’s tragedy, unless you know it’s connected to yesterday’s tragedy?
6) Even if ‘both sides do it’ (which I don’t grant, but still) then shouldn’t each side police its own? When will the right start policing its own? You do know that MoveOn took DOWN the user-submitted video comparing Bush to Hitler, right?
yer wicked
The Republicans’ long term strategy for dealing with being called out on teh crazy is to puff up with indignation and say words to the effect of “How dare you suggest that I’m batshit crazy”, and turn the whole thing into an accusation of partisanship on the part of the “liberal” media. The today media are the cowards. Afraid to be called names, afraid of losing their access, afraid of not getting invited to the next DC function.
I’m having one of those evenings too…
We should demand clearly and often that the news organizations give examples of Dems doing this every time that “both sides do it” crap is mentioned.
“take them at their word.”
Plz provide link of anyone on the ‘left’ (aka ‘center’) who takes wingnuts at their word? Who woulda be deluded enuf to do that?
My question is that if it’s so damned innocent, then why did the right wingers spend all day yesterday taking down the violent imagery and over the top rhetoric?
Must be some wunnerful ‘puffed up’ pics online to characterize the wingnuts.
Actually the supposed leader of the Democratic Party has done worse. Barack Obama claims the power to assassinate anyone for any reason, antiwar, anti-bankster anti-corporation, anti-new world order. Obama has declared War on the Left along with the rest of those Dee Cee cowards. The Democratic Party along with the R’s is a Party of False wars and secret assassinations. The US government is at war against the American people.
Obama and the corporations and the electronic propaganda machines, have brought the wars and terror back home. This particular attack may be the result of a delusional maniac. But this climate of fear and hate has been created for violence to suppress dissent. We can expect that more violence will be directed against anti-war, anti-bankster and any “leftist” political activists.
True, that. George McGovern was quite possibly the best bomber pilot of World War II, yet very few people know this because he never ran on his military service the way Nixon ran on his.
6a) If both sides do it, explain the enormous disparity between the amount of conservative programming every day vs the amount of liberal programming every day.
LMAO! That sounds like a project for my next post.
Indeed, with true liberals as the Nevilles and Hermiones.
Ah, there you have it! Liberals do it all the time but no one listens!
The not-so-Brietbarts get face time on teebee, Fox’s ratings go up, generating more revenue for Rupert. The not-cracked-a-book-since-HS crowd watches, buys the advertised Muscle Builder 600 on credit, rants at the salesperson about the libruls, the MB 600 ends up covered with junk in the garage. Everybody’s cool.
Has anyone noticed an ad on the FDL front page sponsored by the NAGR.org. It shows Hillary superimposed over the UN symbol that looks quite like a gun sight?
“Have you, at long last, no sense of decency?”
No. They do not.
Too often people confuse a mild mannered, non confrontational attitude with weakness. I’ve learned that it’s the quiet ones you’ve gotta watch out for. The bullies and loudmouths are incredibly predictable. It’s the quiet ones who have real courage and I would want to serve with and not be adversarial with. Yeah a lot of Democratic politicians roll over but that’s a different animal than the member of the liberal base.
As long as there’s FOX “News” and everything else is “the liberal media”, I guess their fantasy is intact.
The Arizona Daily Sun has reported that–contrary to a false rumor being promoted by the boneheads at Town Hall that he is a registered Democrat–that Loughner registered to vote in 2006 as an independent. According to registrar of voters Chris Roads, he last voted in the 2008 general election.
Other information that has come out about Loughner from Fox News, the New York Times and Yahoo! News is that Loughner was influenced by a white supremacist/anti-immigrant group named American Renaissance. After a classmate read a poem about getting an abortion, Loughner laughed and said the woman in the poem was a terrorist for killing her baby. Loughner was also very much into anti-government conspiracy theories. He thought 9/11 was carried out by the government, that NASA space missions were hoaxes, and that there was a sinister plot to establish a New World Order with a universal currency. In general, he was very paranoid about the workings of government.
However, the hand-washing conservatives want us to believe Loughner was a leftist and very liberal because that’s what a women who knew him in high school tweeted, though no explanation has ever been given for her characterization.
Yes, except I don’t consider Obama to be a Democrat in any way. He may claim to be a Democrat, but in truth he’s a dishonest Republican, he is Republican but won’t admit it.
I believe she also said that she’d been out of touch with him since 2007.
Pardon me for being cynical but a high-schooler is not exactly someone I would choose to tell me about another person’s politics – or even her own for that matter.
Sounds more like an Alex Jones fan than anything else. Do Tucson radio stations carry that assclown?
J. Bradford DeLong would like some help with a matter related to the subject here, specifically a pattern of activity last week at some Congressional websites. I’m afraid I’ve got nothing —more data needed, maybe.
I Would Very Much Like an Alternative Explanation of This…
I think the Google Ads algorithm needs a little tweaking. If this was a discussion about lactose intolerance we would probably see ads from the Dairy Council.
Yup. Just like how the Cons, and later Matt Bai who reads them, jumped all over an obscure Daily Kos diarist as if one diary (that the diarist pulled before anyone could ask him to do so, out of respect for Giffords and her family) was the equal to years and years of hate expressed by thousands of paid talkers, lavishly funded by dozens of millionaires and billionaires.
And what is paranoia but a manifestation of insecurity? Insecure people who can reason are paranoid, those who can’t become Republicans.
But still, the ad’s imagery was rather surprising given current events and apart from the topic detected.
Yes, yes and yes. The last two elections were mandates for peace and prosperity. It is necessary to have war and austerity, so Obama was chosen to destroy the Democratic Party. Tim Kaine helped, and we all should insist that Kaine be kept as DNC chairman to ensure another R victory in 2012.
I’m still waiting for a Democratic politician to ask a CNN interviewer to cite examples of the left wing inciting violence. But it never happens. Only near the end of the presidential campaign, when the McCain-Palin rallies were at their bigoted worst, did the MSM begin to acknowledge that the violent and most venomous language was coming from the conservatives. As soon as the election was over, though, the media went right back into conservative-worship mode, even giving Palin a “documentary” on Alaska and her kid a gig on Dancing with the Stars.
I’m not certain if there is anything that could happen to force the MSM to return to reality, and to stop pandering to the right.
ty for these comments. Good point, if the violence is not politically motivated why is the violence and threats only aimed at the left.
These people perpetuate hate because they are nihilists. They would rather rule in hell then serve in heaven.
I never thought of Milton but I’ll bet many of them would see him as quite right about things…
I heard that tweet (about his being a leftist) was disinformation.
I don’t think I’d trust any information coming out of Fox or Yahoo, and we know how utterly reliable the NYT is these days … not.
Teddy Partridge is upstairs!
Sunday Late Night: Newsweek’s Unscrupulous Eleanor Clift
And I still say whether he was a leftist, rightist, centrist or all aroundist it’s entirely irrelevant when discussing the subject of possible influence of the right wing hate merchants. I don’t see how his politics or lack thereof are in any way exculpatory of them. Same goes for his state of mind. Same goes for his acting alone or in concert. None of those things matter in the context of the behavior and omnipresence of the right wing haters.
I think we should sue CNN Fox News etc for saying the Right and the Left both need to tones down the violence.
I think we should sue them because they are not mentioning last I checked today that the shooter read Racist Anti Jewish Newsletters and that Gabby was Jewish.
If the media really was controlled by Jews would not that be the lead in the story that the AZ’s first Jewish Congresswoman got targeted?
Instead the Media has not mentioned it at all.
Holy. Crap.
Check this out, folks:

I want Rick Sanchez to explain why CNN run by Jews hasn’t mentioned the fact Gabby was Jewish and the shooter read an antiSemitic newsletter.
“During the radio interview, Sanchez was asked about Stewart being considered a minority since he was Jewish, but balked at the suggestion.
“Very powerless people,” he laughed. “He’s such a minority, I mean, you know… Please, what are you kidding?…I’m telling you that everybody who runs CNN is a lot like Stewart…the people in this country who are Jewish — are an oppressed minority? Yeah,” he said.”

To whom are you referring?
The D’s who’ve been bought, our representatives, or
The D’s who have not been bought?
Gabrielle Giffords and Raul Grijalva are both Democratic members of the House of Representatives from Arizona. On Tuesday January 4 the number of hits on the “Gabrielle Giffords” page on Wikipedia began to rise. The number of hits on the “Raul Grijalva” page did not. By Friday January 7 more than three times as many people were looking at Gabrielle Giffords’s Wikipedia page than had done so in a normal day in the previous month and a half.
On Saturday January 8, of course, six people were murdered in the course of the attempted assassination of Gabrielle Giffords.

Uh maybe the Feds can use that internet tracking software and find out because this seems like fore knowledge and a large conspiracy.
No. ‘Decency’ is a liberal value and was put to bed about the time of the Edsel. That may have worked for Edward R. Murrow but he’s been dead an awfully long time and it don’t work n’more.
We knew this was coming: Conservatives going after Sheriff Dupnik for his honesty and his courage describing the political climate in Arizona:

Do horsies like deh candy canes?
Unless it results in an avalanche of negative and costly media attention (which seems unlikely today), it costs them nothing.
Easy answer. Her name is being plastered all over the media. His? Not so much.
“As I’ve typed many times before, Ds are too dumb to live.”
This is inappropriate at any time, but is especially so at this time.
The mistake sane people keep making is to ask these people anything. When was the last time you heard a right-wingnut ask a question? They don’t do it. They know it leaves their rhetorical target a opening to provide an explanation, robbing them of the opportunity to deprecate their opponent’s character and undermine their opponent’s initiatives. So, progressives, stop asking them questions and giving them the chance to expound their nonsense and spread their poison. No more questions, TELL THE WORLD what fascists and terrorists they are!
Exactly. I don’t look to some 1/4 educated 22 yr old military reject and all-around mental misfit to illuminate me on coherent political positions. At this point, I just would like to know whether Palin’s “crosshairs” and other “Second Amendment Remedies” provocations helped propel him toward politically-tinged mass murder and assault.
We’re just trying to hold civilization together. It’s not timidity, it’s responsibility.
Thanks, Eli, for voicing what so many of us are feeling.
Most assuredly. I’ve fed many an equine my holiday spoils of candy cane.
What’s wrong with extreme conservatives is that they are not people — they are subhuman savages without conscience, without pity, without remorse. You need to understand exactly what it is that has been waging war upon us for decades. We, the left, and by extension the rest of the public, are the victims of an ongoing and increasingly bloody ideological war wages by the far right, which is comprised of super-wealthy business interests and religious zealots.
The filth that wages this war have conditioned themselves, and will continue to condition their children, to feel absolutely no human emotions. They feel only hatred and contempt for any and all who are not like them: amoral, utterly ruthless, and willing to tell any lie no matter how outrageous, in order to acquire vast wealth and power. They think of us as being nothing more, and certainly much less, than work animals for their benefit. They despise us with every fiber of their being. And they despise us because a few generations ago we stood up to them and not only told them “no,” we made them actually pay for things.
So the far right waged war on us, and they’ve been doing it by taking one thing from us at a time. They created well-funded think tanks from their very deep pockets to come up with rhetoric and political strategies that would convince the public to vote for their politicians and against its own interests, they got their politicians into office so they could dismantle the system of regulations that had been in place for decades and prevented them from wrecking the country, they bought both major political parties, and they gutted any and all regulations on what they could do to turn a profit.
Their biggest, most enduring victory so far has been to deregulate the media so that they can seize control of the entire media apparatus and therefore possess total domination of U.S. mainstream media. We see and hear from the corporate-owned airwaves and the corporate-owned newspapers only that which the bosses approve. Do you think Mr. and Mrs. J.Q. Public are going to know that actual representatives are busting their humps trying to get elected to public office, like those in the Green and Socialist Parties, if they never read about us in the paper or hear about us on the radio, or watch coverage of our campaigns on the television? Of course not. And so, when Democrats help the Republicans demoralize the voting public, the voting public sees only one of two horrendously bad options in every cycle: vote for politicians they know for a fact do not represent them and who hate their guts, or stay home and don’t vote at all. More and more people choose the latter, having been disallowed the option of voting for candidates who do represent them.
And where media blackouts fail to brainwash the masses, where they fail to intimidate us on the left, there are shooting sprees and police state thuggery to keep us reminded that we dare not raise our voices too high, that we must never, ever speak ill of an enemy that thinks nothing whatsoever of labeling us communists, socialists, or both (as though that’s something to be ashamed of), terrorists, traitors, and whatever else their dishonest and diseased brains can spew out. They incite others to violence against us with impunity, because they know there is no longer any apparatus remaining to hold them accountable for their crimes, and because they are too lazy and cowardly to get their pudgy little pig hooves bloody.
You ask what’s wrong with conservatives. Wrong question. Ask what’s wrong with us on the left that we allow ourselves to be intimidated by the filth, and why we aren’t acknowledging that we are in a losing war against subhuman savages that have only our complete and total destruction in mind. We are not allowed to do anything but surrender and die. If we don’t stop wondering about the enemy and start fighting back, creating our own think tanks and doing whatever it takes to get candidates who truly represent us into positions of power — candidates who dare not raise a peep in real criticism, because they fear losing our votes and money — then we will be following Germany, italy, Spain, and other failed nations of the 20th Century into fascism and ruin, and ultimately, collapse.
My very first presidential vote was for McGovern.
