With great fanfare, Rep.Todd Akin (R-MO) leads the Teabgging crowd, gathered in front of the Capitol, in the Pledge of Allegiance:
"As we renew our commitment to the Red, White, and Blue, let us with boldness proclaim the fact that we are one nation under God. It is all together fitting and proper that we should do this AND it drives the Liberals crazy."
He then proceeds to flub it.
He also said, "from the storm tossed pilgrims who came to this land and gave America her first constitution…"

The Pilgrims gave us our first Constitution? Really? I guess they unveiled it at Thanksgiving. The next year they gave us our first Macy’s parade.
When precisely was it that, “George Washington and his troops who miraculously escaped from Long Island in the fog?” I think that it is Rep. Akin that needs to escape from the fog.
Rep. Akin’s has displayed a seemingly absolute ignorance of our national history. The historical “facts” he cites did not happen. The teabagger moron masses are led by imbecilic buffoons. The dumb leading the dumber.

I’ve been reviewing the history of the colony as it’s been written in Wikipedia. So far, no mention of a constitution, nor do I expect to find one. The Mayflower Compact was signed by 41 out of 100-plus colonists. In it, they agreed to live together under common laws or some such. Not a proper constitution as I’d define the term.
I’ll actually give you that one, since according to this, Texas ranks 35th (.94 per dollar paid). Of course, that still has TExas doing better than the bulk of deep blue states.

They’re the only ones normally allowed to carry them. There are quite a few other ways that people could have them on an Army base, particularly one as large as Ft. Hood. It’s even possible someone sneaked them onto the post for the purpose of whatever this is.
With high velocity rounds we can expect the death toll to rise.

My first reaction was somebody wigged out and opened fire. With more than 1 shooter, however, I sense a plan. That’s scary. A wigged out grunt is one thing, a couple bent on murder is something else.

Things are prolly tighter than they were in my time. Even though I was Navy I could go to the (army) base armourer and check out an M-16 and all the ammo I could carry. Just tell ‘em I was gonna spend some time on their range.

(That’s not a hard thing to do – every U.S. military installation has some sort of firewall that can be clamped down quickly.) We can debate about the guns, but one thing is for sure. The two largest generally liberal and Democratic voting states, California and New York, far and away lead the nation in tax revenues contributed to the United States treasury (a combined total of nearly $570 billion, or almost a quarter of all money collected).
Furthermore, the states that pay the highest rate of Federal taxes per capita are (in order): District of Columbia, Delaware, Connecticut, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Nebraska and Illinois.
Eight of the ten on this list are pretty much the Bluest of the Blue states. Of the other two, Minnesota leans blue (Obama carried the state with 54% of the vote), and only Nebraska could be listed as a Republican state.
By contrast, the 10 states with the lowest tax rates paid into the Federal treasury are (starting at the lowest): West Virginia, Mississippi, New Mexico, South Carolina, Montana, Maine, Alabama, Kentucky, Arizona, Utah. Of these the only ones carried by Obama were New Mexico and Maine.
This is one of the great ironies of the current political climate. A huge percentage of the people who whine and gripe the loudest about the federal government and taxes actually pay far, far *less* than most Americans! Of course, these gripers happily drive on federally funded highways, fly on federally regulated airlines, eat federally inspected food, vacation in national parks, benefit from federally funded research and development projects (including the internet), etc. etc.
Meanwhile, states that tend to vote Democratic generally have more productive economies and contribute more than their fair share in taxes, paying the way for the gripers.
If some of these red states ever did actually act to secede, boy, I’d be all for not letting the door hit them on the ass on the way out. The United States as a whole would then be wealthier and better educated, and obviously social progress would be far less impeded.
Unfortunately the reality is that the seceding states probably wouldn’t be able to survive on their own for more than a few years before devolving into bass-ackward third world Clepto-Theocracies.

August 30, 1776. Apparently Rep. Akin was able to stay awake in history class on the days they covered shootin.
I’ll give Akins that one. That evacuation was a rather ignoble defeat and beginning to the Revolutionary War. It was miraculous in that about 9.000 troops escaped capture. It sounded to my ears like Akins was conflating the Battle of Long Island with Washington crossing the Delaware River. I’m still not totally convinced that is not what he was referring to.
I am still pretty sure that the Pilgrims didn’t have a damn thing to do with the Constitution.

Since when are Long Island and Brooklyn the same?
I’ve never ever, until this wiki entry, seen the Battle of Brooklyn Heights referred to as the Battle of “Long Island.” And I’ve read enough revolutionary American history to have studied that battle, and the evacuation from the location, in several different sources.
Only in the most technical sense that Brooklyn is at the westernmost end of Long Island could you call something that occurred in Brooklyn the same as something that occurred on Long Island. Brooklyn was a separate settlement from New York until the last century.
Maybe Akin’s people sneaked into the Wiki to change it so their boss wouldn’t look so stupid.
Southern states get more back from the federal government than they pay taxes. People in other states have guns too.
I also liked, when everyone raised their hands to their hearts, one doofus put his hand on the LEFT side of his body, not the RIGHT, where the heart is. And even if the heart were ON the left, his hand was up around his collar bone.
